Speaker 1 (00:01):
Now on seven excess, it's time to talk all things
wild West with Shane Pitt, Mayor of the West Coast.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
It is time for Mayor on there is Shane Pitt.
Good morning Shane, Good morning Andrew.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
How are you mate?
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Friday again?
Speaker 3 (00:15):
Friday again?
Speaker 2 (00:16):
I love it? Now shame we've got no listener questions.
Let's get into it. The Zee and I GA access there.
Speaker 4 (00:22):
Yeah, so for the next few weeks there were changes
around the I GA access in main Street. So now
the to access the IJ and zooe you will have
to do it via the Homeskirt Hotel. With the works
underway to upgrade the failing curb and gathering there and
also the driveway into ij so yeah, it's these works
(00:44):
will improve the sub surface water management and storm water
of that area. There will be some traffic delays during
the works, of course, and which are expected to take
up the five works to complete, so I hope residents
over there in Zoon can be patient. It will be
a great outcome in the end, and please motors follow
(01:06):
the traffic management signs. It's in place to ensure that
everyone remained safe over there.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
So great, okay. The Zee and gym and the multi
purpose center, the redevelopment and how it's part which is good.
An opening happening on September.
Speaker 4 (01:21):
Yes, mate, no, this is great news and finally we're
getting there. So it's been a while and thank all
the residents over there in Zin and all those that
use the gym for their patients with regard to this.
And so the official opening is scheduled for September the
fourteenth at twelve pm. It starts over there and we'd
(01:42):
love to see the community come along to the opening.
It's well working on the details with community groups and
business on the board on board to offer some great
activities on that day. But yeah, it's already seeing a
lot of children and over there using.
Speaker 3 (02:01):
Howard's Park, which is great to see.
Speaker 4 (02:02):
And you know, we're.
Speaker 3 (02:05):
With the gym opening as well.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
Certainly get a lot of questions about when it's going
to be opening, and there's a lot of people that
want to get in there and utilies the equipment again
in the new facility and get back into the squash courts.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
I'll tell you what. There's a lot of feedback regarding
how it's park and how it was built and the
kids are playing on it.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Yeah, it's taken a lot a while.
Speaker 4 (02:27):
Disappointed has taken so long to get it there, but
you know, these things do take time, and it's glad
that we've got a good outcoming in the end. So
which use and it'll be there for a few years
to come now, so our kids of today will be
able to enjoy it.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
And also those phones and then laptops.
Speaker 4 (02:44):
Oh yeah, well, you know, it's an opportunity there for
the children to be out in the outdoors as well.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
So it's it's great.
Speaker 2 (02:54):
Okay, we've got a position vacant still.
Speaker 4 (02:56):
Yeah, so we're still seeking a plant operator to be
part of the the team responsible for maintenance of council
assets ranging ranging from roads, storm water, parks and recreation
areas and also deliver the waste management services. So the
role will primarily be based in Zine, but of course
(03:18):
they will possibly move right around the West coast, but
that's where their main base will be in Zene. So
applications closed the third of September.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
Yeah, so if.
Speaker 4 (03:28):
Anyone's interested in that position, please All our information is
available on the website.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Fantastic okay, legal rubbish dumping.
Speaker 4 (03:37):
Yeah, so we've been sharing some messages on social media
highlighting illegal dumping of rubbish and the impact this can
have on the environment, you know, and it doesn't look
good for our tourists coming to the region as well.
So we're aware of some of the feedback that dumping
is occurring due to the waste transfers being closed. But
even if when the transfer stations were open so days
(04:00):
a week, there was still illegal dumping and significant amounts,
it's probably it's probably improved, Andrews, but yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
That's still still people are dumping. They're not thinking what
they're doing.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
Yeah, exactly right, mate. We need to make it clear
that there are no excuses for littering and dumping rubbish
in the wilderness and rivers and the sides of the roads.
You know, we look at the sides of our highways
around the West Coast there they're not in real good
condition with the amount of rubbish that's on the side
of the roads and recently seen locals out there picking
(04:35):
up rubbish from the side of the roads.
Speaker 3 (04:37):
Okay, there's a bit dangerous.
Speaker 4 (04:38):
There for them people, but you know it's something we
keep taking the State growth with regard to the roads
to get their contractor to pick them up patrol it
more often, but you know the best thing would be
to stop that in the first place. Yeah. So we
operate our seven transfer stations across the roots for six
(05:00):
days a week. There's a transfer station open on the
West coast all or closed Sundays and Christmas Days.
Speaker 3 (05:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (05:10):
So if you've if you have ways to dispose of
there's not suitable for the weely been collection, keep hold
of it until you can get to an open transfer station.
I guess that's pretty straightforward.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
Made, isn't it.
Speaker 4 (05:22):
But it seems to be an issue across our community,
and I guess it's not just across our community either,
because you know, you travel.
Speaker 2 (05:32):
You travel everywhere.
Speaker 3 (05:33):
Everywhere in the shit you do.
Speaker 2 (05:35):
Yeah, yep, So if anybody does see someone doing something wrong,
get touched to a council.
Speaker 3 (05:40):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (05:41):
Also they can report dump rubbish at at the EPA
website there as well, So you know, it is a.
Speaker 2 (05:49):
A major thing that's going on, not just here, it's everywhere.
Speaker 3 (05:52):
That's right mate.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (05:53):
And the and the highways are state growth, so the
state government, so e p A would be straight up
on the board the yeah, exactly.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
Or shame We're going to take a break keeping you.
Speaker 1 (06:06):
In touch with your community. We're talking with the mayor
of the West Coast Shame pit on West Coast seven excess.
Speaker 2 (06:14):
Back again, Shane, let's have a look at what we're
going to talk about now, Oka Health.
Speaker 4 (06:19):
Yeah, So on Tuesday night at our council meeting, Andrew
I moved an emotion.
Speaker 3 (06:24):
To sort support or sorry, it was a.
Speaker 4 (06:30):
Question without notice that I saw council support to write
to the CEO of Oka Health regarding the news that
one of the contract doctors here in constey and will.
Speaker 3 (06:44):
Not be renewed.
Speaker 4 (06:45):
That this doctor is committed to working in the region
which would provide community care a continuity of care as well,
which is great that we've got someone that's passionate about
moving to the West Coast and living here. And you know,
it's attraction and retention of our medical professionals has been
(07:08):
highlighted by Counsel to the to the state government in
the past, and renew of this contract will be a
positive move in that space.
Speaker 3 (07:17):
So it's it is disappointing.
Speaker 4 (07:19):
So we will now write Oker Health and provide a
copy to the premiere another relevant state and federal representatives
to try and get their decision I guess looked at.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
And I've seen this on socials and it's it's big.
Speaker 3 (07:33):
It is big, mate.
Speaker 4 (07:34):
Yes, you know, it's disappointing when you've got a young
person here, young.
Speaker 3 (07:39):
Doctor that's moved to the community all the way from
Western Australia thinking this.
Speaker 4 (07:45):
She wants to call this home and she was under
belief when she came from westn Australia that she'd be
here for the long haul and the care that she gives.
You know, we've had a lot of community members come
up to me and say, you know, we need to
keep this doctor here.
Speaker 2 (08:01):
I don't know the doctor you're talking about.
Speaker 3 (08:03):
So she you know the doctors.
Speaker 4 (08:06):
She's passionate about what she does, which is great, you know,
and she she'll.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
Just one of those that doesn't sit there and look
at a computer.
Speaker 4 (08:13):
That's right, yeah, exactly, And like you know, people have
got that continuity. I've got the same face. They can
go to a week after week. There's not a different
doctor every time, and then they've got to explain there
are almost to the person that's gone and the time's gone. Yeah,
so it's yeah, we'll see how we go. It will
be you know, I've already spoken to the Premiere and
(08:35):
the leader or the ex leader of the opposition when
they're here during the election period about the situation. And
you know, at that time, of course the state government
was in care taking mode and they couldn't do anything further.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
But now that they're in power, they're.
Speaker 4 (08:53):
In power or even both sides, so we'll be riding
to both sides of government to see see whether they
can do anything to assist here because it.
Speaker 2 (09:03):
Is so we need it. We can't go backwards.
Speaker 4 (09:06):
No, that's right mate, you know, and it's good to
see that we've got some people that want to move
to our community, which is and off of the services
that we've so long needing.
Speaker 2 (09:16):
That's right, that's right. Okay. The Heady Bullpark across the
road from.
Speaker 4 (09:20):
Us, Yes, mate, it's all so disappointing the time is
taken for that project to be completed.
Speaker 3 (09:28):
It's not far away, I don't believe.
Speaker 4 (09:30):
It's good to see that works continuing on that redevelopment,
but you know it's going to be longer than anyone
planned in the first place. And we thank community for
their patients in this. We did have some bit of
an issue with the power over there at one stage which.
Speaker 3 (09:49):
Held the whole project up.
Speaker 4 (09:51):
But you know, at this stage we still don't have
a set opening date, but it won't be far around
the corner. As you can see, it's all almost completed there, Andrew.
But you know, I've apologized to the community for how
long this has taken.
Speaker 3 (10:07):
But that's out.
Speaker 4 (10:08):
You know, we've had contractors working on that and we've
continued to push them to get it completed as soon
as possible.
Speaker 2 (10:16):
Okay, the trails at Silver City are now open.
Speaker 4 (10:19):
Yeah, so the mountain bike trails over their meetings and
they've been closed for a couple of weeks due to
a tree being down across the road across the tracks,
but that's now back open, so which is great to
see for all those mountain bikers here.
Speaker 2 (10:36):
Okay, we heard anythink more from the Benig Bank.
Speaker 4 (10:40):
Not from the Bendig Bank, mate, But things are still pushing.
We're still working with all politicians as well to try
and force Bendiga to change their views.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
Well. Of course, we are.
Speaker 4 (10:53):
Also are looking at other options, but you know the
first option is to get the Bendi Go Bank to
remain open. And you know we've we've I've had Josh
Willie here yesterday and spoke to him and he's going
to take it further as well. So you know we've
got all the politicians on board, ye, or as many
(11:16):
as possible.
Speaker 3 (11:16):
We've got.
Speaker 4 (11:18):
Tammy Turrell will be here in a few weeks time
as well to.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
See what she can assist with as well. And I
know that she wants.
Speaker 4 (11:26):
To put say something at federal government level as well,
and we've had and Erkharts certainly been saying things over
there at Parliament as well this week. Yeah, so you
know it's it's certainly got some traction and we'll see
what we can do. Because it's not only a the
Queenstown bendy Go Bank whither the Bendigo Bank is closing
(11:48):
a lot of banks right around Australia.
Speaker 3 (11:51):
So you know they're supposed to be.
Speaker 2 (11:52):
A community bank, but they've got against their word.
Speaker 3 (11:56):
They have, mate, they have.
Speaker 4 (11:57):
And I think you know it's a it's a united
effort here.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
It's not just about closing. It's the only bank in
the West Coast where other branches are closing. At least
there's a bank in their town.
Speaker 4 (12:09):
Oh that's right, Yeah, so I guess that's there is
a couple of smaller towns on the mainland that won't
have a bank either, and I'll have to travel not
quite as far as us. We're close one hundred k's
or thereabouts to the nearest bank, but you know we're
a lot further than that. But yeah, it's and of
course the ben you Go bank in Bernie is not
open every day of the week. Yeah, so that's only
(12:31):
opened three days a week also, so that makes it
even more difficult for.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
Makes you wonder whether they're going to close soon.
Speaker 4 (12:37):
Well that's another thing, I guess. And you know, we'll
continue to work through this with the assistance of you know,
whoever we can, the politicians and of course Janet lagh
is doing a tremendous job on her side.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
And it's just always messaging me and telling me what
to do and getting the word out there. In the
Parliament in Hobart was told that eric A Betts Gavin
Pierce pushed the issue again. Yes, so let's just hope
that you know, someone hears what we're saying and could
do something about it.
Speaker 4 (13:10):
Yeah, that's right, mate, And I think you know, the
embarrassment will go a long way for the Bendigo bank,
and the more people will get talking about this, the
more embarrassing it can be for the for the bank.
So you know, it's it's one of the things we
want to see. But until that door closes, will continue
to fight and hopefully it won't close, it will stay open.
Speaker 3 (13:34):
So yeah, but well, you know, we'll see how we go.
And I guess it's.
Speaker 4 (13:39):
There's other options we're looking at as well, behind the
behind the scenes, but we won't be disclosing them at
this stage because our priority is to keep the keep
Bendigo Bank doors open.
Speaker 2 (13:51):
You fantastic. Any other news we need to know about.
Speaker 4 (13:54):
Oh, I don't think so, mate, I think We're just
about covered. And I guess I won't be back next week,
but we'll see you when I'm well.
Speaker 2 (14:03):
Mayor on air will be back on their on the
nineteenth of September. Yeah, I'm taking a two week break
and the boss has told me to go and have
a break, have a rest because Christmas is coming up,
it's just around the corner. But no, I'm going to
enjoy my break and we're back on the fifteenth.
Speaker 4 (14:17):
No, enjoy yourself, mate, and you deserve it, and you
know we'll see you back on back on here in
a few weeks.
Speaker 2 (14:25):
