Speaker 1 (00:04):
Good morning, Shane, Good morning, Scott, good morning and not
too bad for a Friday. I love it so that
day I always love. It's called Meyer on air. We're
talking to Shane Pitt and all such. General manager Scott Riley. Okay,
we've got some listener questions. Is it true that the
Strawn Primary School is required to pay a council fee
for the use of the Straw Recreation ground for events

(00:26):
such as athletic carnivals os kick If so, what's the
breakdown of the service required from council for such events
and why these fees not included in our rising rate charges.

Speaker 2 (00:36):
Yeah, well thanks Andrew, I'll take that question. Yeah, we'll
get with regard to the fee that the Strong Primary
School does pay, it doesn't cover the whole cost of
the work that needs to be done on the recreation
ground to get it ready for the carnival. And also
the state government provides a school with funds to provide

(00:57):
these activities, so it's a way that can you know,
our West Coast community can get some money back from
the state government as well. You know, we see it
all the time that the amount of money that comes
out of our community goes to state government coffers and
we don't receive much back from them. So this is

(01:18):
you know, all these ways that we can capture some
of that money that goes from the West Coast to
the state government to get it back onto the West
Coast for our residents. The more we can do, the
better off will be. And you know, we want to
try and keep our rate charges down as much as possible,
and that's one way we can do it by leaning

(01:41):
on some of the other government agencies or some of
the levels of government that take money from the West
Coast and to get that back. So yeah, and I
guess you know when you talk about these schools, it's
not just a strong primary school, it's soon and also
raise bring and Queenstown as well participate in providing some

(02:03):
funds for the West Coast community. And if we keep
adding all this to the rate rises or rate charges,
they'll continue to rise all the time. And you know
that's one thing that we've said right from the day
and especially since COVID, we give our rate rate residents
a really good guess remissions back then because we've seen

(02:26):
it was going to be hard times and now it's
time we need.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
To exactly Okay, we'll go to the next question. Hello,
I'm wondering when the recreation hauling Straw will be open
to the public. I'm aware that it isn't an official
opening date, but exactly is causing the delay just how
they write it.

Speaker 3 (02:46):
Yes, good morning, Andrew. The Straw and Recreation Center was
a federal fund, government funded project, and in that scenario,
when we go to make an official opening, we actually
have to work with the federal members of availability and
that is the schedule of Parliament. And as you would
all everybody in the state would appreciate, we've recently had

(03:08):
a federal election and a state election and all those
schedules have been in a little bit of turmoil. But
we will be confirming a date in the not too
distant future. We have those requests out with the members,
so we're looking forward to a proactive start with that facility. Yes,
the building is nine on to ninety nine percent complete.
I think we're waiting on a final certification from the

(03:31):
Buildings of our in relation to its suitability for use.
Once that's done and we've got members confirmed, will be
directly into an opening.

Speaker 1 (03:39):
Sounds great. Okay, let's get to the matter in hand
zein a gym and Multiperpo Center redevelopment and Howard's Park.

Speaker 2 (03:47):
Yeah, so we've got an official opening date for that one, Andrew,
it's a schedule for September the fourteenth, so we're able
to get anne urkhat is coming down to open that one,
So we're able to have her on board for the
fourteenth of September, and you know, we'd love to see
the community come along.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
To the opening, and that's the Sunday.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
Yes, it is mate. Yeah, you know, we see the
children over there playing on the park already, which is
great to see and there's certainly some good comments coming back.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
Around, especially social Yeah you seen it.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
On the Yes, the council staff are working through the
details on that opening and we'll be sharing them as
soon as they've got them organized. But for now, just
save that.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
Date right, fourteenth to September. Okay. Council meeting happening in August.

Speaker 2 (04:37):
Yeah, so our August meeting is to be held on Tuesday,
the twenty sixth of August at five pm. Of course,
the meeting is open to the public and we encourage
people to come along and have their say or see
a bit more about what council how it works, so
you come to the gallery there or also people can

(04:57):
submit questions to the general manager up to midday on
Tuesday to twenty sixth Okay, yeah, so it's good to
see some community questions submitted at our last meeting as well.
So which is.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
Great, good okay to Scott rate notes.

Speaker 3 (05:14):
Is Yes, the rates notice Andrew has been issued. We'd
like to thank the rate payers for their patients and
the biggest challenge we faced there is that we had
a software breakdown in the background or the rates notice,
and that was took a little bit of time to
sort out, just to make sure that everybody gets the
right rate notes. No one wants to pay more than
they necessarily have to pay. Some rates have decreased and

(05:38):
we've had a few phone calls people querying that, which
we truly appreciate. Effectively, what happened in this year's rates
is that we're looking to balance the equity and make
things a little bit fairer across the different categories. Councils
supported that, so we've implemented that. There has been a
little bit of movement with a few of the rate
categories as a result of the delay we're looking at.

(06:02):
We have extended the payment date until the thirtieth of September,
so it's not this month, it's next month, and that
then allows the rate payers at just that little bit
extra time. As part of the process, would encourage everybody
to check their address and if they haven't lodged their
email address with us, that'd be a great step forward
so that they can get electronic copy of the rate.

Speaker 1 (06:24):
It's not easy, okay, shame. We look at the West
Coast Winners.

Speaker 2 (06:27):
Yeah, so this year we've introduced a new way of
saying thanks to paying your rates in full on time.
It's called the West Coast Winners and so if you've
paid your rates in full by the thirtieth of September
twenty twenty five, you will automamatically go into the running
to when one of four vouchers are valued at one's
two thousand dollars, one thousand dollars and two five hundred

(06:50):
dollars vouchers to be spent at West Coast businesses, so
keeping the money in the West Coast Andrew. But these
vouchers can be used for anything from cafes to groceries
to local trades. Accommodation, combination, loads of gravel, you know,
anything like that, as long as the service keep or
items is from the West Coast.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
Yeah, that sounds great.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
It does sound great, And I guess it's you know,
it's one of the things we're trying, you know, when
we know that the remissions have gone that we've had
in place for some time. So this is the way
of trying to get those people to pay the rates
in full, up up front. And I guess the other
way that a lot of people do paying their rates

(07:33):
now is in instorment beforehand. So every week they get
they're paying some, Every fortnight they're paying some.

Speaker 1 (07:39):
Well, nowadays the cost of living. I think we pay
each week, don't we. Yeah. Okay, guys, we're just going
to take a break. Yes, it is me or here
we're back with Shane Pitt and Scott Riley. Okay, Shane.

(08:01):
The West Coast Visitor Readiness Season. What's it all about?

Speaker 2 (08:05):
Yeah, So, Hospitality Tasmane. You're in partnership with west By
Northwest Tourism delivering a West Coast visitor Readiness session on
the twenty sixth of augustin Queenstown. This is a great
opportunity to develop the update skills without having to travel away.
So it's good to see that these organizations are coming

(08:25):
to the West Coast rather than our tourism operators have
to travel away for these things. So we've got events
coming up this year like the Unconformity. Next year we've
got Diverged Sky Run and then we've also got our
local festivals in Zurn and Rasebury, so it's important that
we're all ready to deliver great services for visitors and

(08:46):
our communities as well. So it's a great opportunity for
these sessions Andrew that they'll cover practical training and customer experience,
tips for enhancing your offering ahead of the festivals, collaboration
and cross promotion opportunity. So it's you know, it's it's
great and these are perfect for working if you're those

(09:08):
people working in tourism, hospitality, retail and anyone with a
community facing role including community groups and services, which we've
got a lot of them out there, Andrew and out.

Speaker 1 (09:19):
Let's all get it, let's all get together.

Speaker 2 (09:20):
Yeah, it's a great opportunity to fine tune your skills
that can be used across all industries. So for more
information and a link to register, see the post on
Council's Facebook or contact Hospitality Tasmania's a great, great initiative
there by west By Northwest and Hospitality tas and you

(09:42):
know those those businesses that are facing visitors coming into
our community in the near future.

Speaker 1 (09:50):
It's a great great with the great opportunities. He's another
one Employment register with the Council Scott.

Speaker 3 (09:57):
Yes, yes, online, we have on our website courage everybody
going and have a look at that. The opportunity there
is if you're registered with Counsel. We'll be looking to
from time to time to actually pull some casual skills
in or look for project work, so we're encouraging it
could be everything from being on the Parks and Gardens

(10:17):
team to actually working on a project, so it can
be a very diverse range of opportunities that can come
that way. We'll be looking towards Christmas time looking to
actually put some trainees and apprentices on so that's a
great opportunity for people to actually get some experience in
terms of lodging their resume and engaging with Counsel.

Speaker 1 (10:39):
Right okay, unconformity Yeah.

Speaker 2 (10:42):
Well Andrew, what a great night last launch congratulations to
the team there with the festival program launched last night
in the Crows clubrooms, and thanks to the Craze as
well for organizing well running the event with the with
having the bar open there and also the facility. But

(11:04):
you know, the program looks great and looking forward to it,
looking forward to October, mate, And yeah, I think all
our communities are looking forward to it as well. It's
on the tip of everyone's tongue. They're talking about it,
which is great.

Speaker 1 (11:18):
Lauren Lauren when she comes since she teases it and
I try and get that a little bit out and
she will not give it. But midnight last night and
yesterday it's all out on their website.

Speaker 2 (11:28):
Yes, mate, it's out there now so everyone knows who's coming,
who the big act is. It wasn't a c d C.
As I was promoting. I thought we might have been.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
To get them across the line that since his time.

Speaker 2 (11:39):
But anyway, Spiderbeat's a good band as well, so it's
great that they are able to attract, you know, a
great and.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
I think they'll attract a lot of people out from
not just here, but you know, right around Tasy on
the mainland.

Speaker 2 (11:55):
Yeah, I think they will and there's something which is
you know, it's growing every year. Every every year, of course,
but every time we have a festival grow.

Speaker 1 (12:03):
So this is my first year, so I'm looking forward
to it.

Speaker 2 (12:06):
Yeah, and you know, the amount of people around the
community around Tasmania they're talking about it's just unbelievable. And
you know, every time we go and talk to fellow
fellow counselors and mayors and deputy mayors outside of Queenstown,
I'm always mentioned, you know, all the way Unconformity in October,
and make sure you're got your accommodation book because you know,

(12:28):
Queenstown and be booked out and out Straw and Zen
and Rose behavefully we can book them out as well.

Speaker 1 (12:34):
We've got a couple of rooms I can read now.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
So it's going to be a great, great, great event.
And yeah, the program looks great.

Speaker 3 (12:42):
It does on that Andrew, it's really good to see
Boman's photo on the front of the Unconformity brochure like that.
That's a fabulous image and I encourage everybody to go
and have a look.

Speaker 1 (12:53):
It's on their Facebook page, it's also on their website.
So yeah, yeah, I.

Speaker 2 (12:57):
Guess you know, when you look at that Andrew and
there's a general manager mentioned it's a local local photographer
that's been bored along for the ride as well, and
that is a.

Speaker 1 (13:06):
You know, we're not getting things from outside. It's staying
right here.

Speaker 2 (13:10):
In the art trial. That's all about our local artists showing,
showing them off, showing what they can do, because you know,
we've got some spectacular artists in this right across the
West Coast, and it's an opportunity for them to show
how good they.

Speaker 1 (13:24):
Are, especially over four days.

Speaker 2 (13:26):
Yes, you know, we've got some really fantastic artists here.

Speaker 1 (13:29):
And they do all sorts of things.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
They certainly do, and it's not just not just drawings
and paintings. It's all types of art which is great
to see and it's something which we want to see
these people in our community thrive. And it's something which
we've over the years, you know, diversifying our economy and
arts and culture is one way that's we've seen that,
you know, the mind closure it hasn't really affected the

(13:56):
West Coast of the way that we thought it would
because arts and culture have stepped up tourism.

Speaker 1 (14:01):
It's starting to come back again.

Speaker 2 (14:02):
It is yes, that's great right community.

Speaker 1 (14:06):
Okay, Finally the Bendigo Bank the day of action Scott.

Speaker 3 (14:09):
Yes, the Benigo Bank Day of Action was yesterday. Still
the opportunity exists. We've seen the social media and the
post about in relation to the Benigo Banking locally. I'd
encourage everybody to still ring the PM and the Treasurer
and I was very pleased to see some images of
the presentation of Queenstown in front of the Treasurer's office

(14:30):
in Brisbane. Yes, so our message is getting out there
and then certainly will be asked about in Parliament next week.

Speaker 1 (14:38):
So what are good to ask Scott? If Bendigo Bank
don't turn their decision and keep it closed, how do
we as a West Coast area part of Braden survive
without a bank.

Speaker 3 (14:51):
That is one of the challenges that will come to
if we can't get a positive response from Bendica. Council
is very interested and we've had several conversation so far
about what what plan and B or C might be,
But I don't want to go there first. I want
to hold Bendigo accountable for the decision they've made.

Speaker 1 (15:09):
Have you heard from them though.

Speaker 3 (15:10):
Yes, we've had one conversation with them. There's very little
movement in that conversation, but we will definitely be back
to that next week following this day of action, which
was yesterday.

Speaker 2 (15:21):
I had Richard Colback on the phone yesterday Andrew he
had a meeting. Who's going into a meeting with the
with the Bendigo Bank. So we just rang just to
get some information from you know, from from myself aware
we're where what we've already done with the Bendigo Bank
and how we've well what they've said. So I haven't

(15:43):
heard back how he went with that with that meeting.
But you know we've got all sides and all areas
of politicians on board.

Speaker 1 (15:51):
Here a local people they call me here, why can't
this politician do this? Why can't they just turn it round?
Well it's not a from an owned bank, that's the.

Speaker 2 (16:01):
Problem exactly, that's the biggest problem. But you know when
we talk about politicians as well, you know we've got
Robert Barwick from the Australian Citizen Party. Well he's just
been fantastic. You know, you come to the public meeting
in Queenstown, all the way from Victoria just to be
there at that meeting, just to put his case forward,
and he's been certainly.

Speaker 1 (16:23):
Pushing parlors, talking to the different different people there. It's
a matter of taking the eye off on the straight
from the tea and with the right But at the
moment we're unsettled. I mean really, when you think about
it's twenty four or five weeks away.

Speaker 3 (16:37):
That is correct, but we're still maintaining the rage. And
I'd still encourage everybody to go online make those phone
calls as one piece of information. If you've got to
spare ten minutes with your email account open, email is
probably a little bit better than making the phone call
simply because that becomes then an official record and they

(16:58):
have to respond.

Speaker 1 (17:00):
I didn't know that.

Speaker 3 (17:01):
Yeah, so email and everybody can do that today tonight,
over the next couple of days, the weekend's coming up.
In between watching the footy and go and get in
the pie, send an email to the PM and the Treasurer.
We want our bank.

Speaker 1 (17:15):
Yeah, if you want your bank, do what he says. Okay, guys,
anything else that we need to talk about.

Speaker 2 (17:20):
I don't think, Andrew, I think we've covered out of
it all today.

Speaker 3 (17:23):
And yeah, I think we've had a full cup with
that conformity and great opportunities moving forward. Here we're going
in the right direction.

Speaker 1 (17:31):
Fair enough, okay, Shane, I will see you next Friday, Yes, mate,
you will and nice see in about three or four
weeks time. Sounds great, okay. That is Mayor iair. It
happens each and every Friday, just after the news we
do Mayor on their with Shane Pitten, also with GM
Scott Riley. And of course if you've got any questions
for the Mayor, where there it be in your street
in town like we did this morning, get in touch

(17:52):
with us. Just go to Sevenexcess dot com dot au
and give us all the details. That is Mayor onir all.
Thanks for the West Coast Council working in partnership with
you community.
