Speaker 1 (00:01):
Now on seven Excess, it's time to talk all things
wild West with Shane Pitt, Mayor of the West Coast
wild West. It's time now for Mayor on the air
on seven Excess. Mayor on air is Shane Pitt. Good
morning to Shane.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
Good morning Andrew.
Speaker 1 (00:17):
Not too bad Friday, gotta love it Friday for some.
That's it. We've got a listener question here. Who is
responsible for the planning and approval of the Straw Waterfront redevelopment,
the building of the new toilets, the location design outdated
and costing too much?
Speaker 2 (00:34):
Yeah, well that is that is a a project of councils.
We've talked about this quite on quite many occasions now, Andrew,
and it was with regard to the original master plan
for the waterfront and Strawn which was done back in
(00:56):
some time ago. Now we're able to get federal and
state funding for that. So the federal and state government's
both put in together over three million dollars for that project,
and that's where it is at the moment. So with
regard to the location, well, that was part of the
(01:17):
master plan, that was the Strong residence back in twenty
back twenty sixteen. It was now that that went out
for public consultation that was done by tas Ports, State
Growth and Council all went out and asked the community
what they wanted and this is what they come back with.
(01:39):
And then again we also went out to the public
a few years ago now before we started this project
off the ground and asked for their opinions again and
this is where we've come to.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
Now, maybe that person is to co and speak to council.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
Yeah, I guess that he may may not be around
at the time, and all these things were discussed as well,
but and you know, it is something which I guess
the strong people wanted even before twenty sixteen. And you
know we've seen the waterfront upgraded down there at Straw
and for the tour boats, et cetera, and the terminals
(02:19):
and that was all part of this plan. So that
was done by Tasports and then the rest of this
is the follow on from that. It's taking some time,
we understand that because at one stage Tasports didn't want
to continue on with that. But you know, they got
their piece of the pie, I guess with the terminals,
et cetera. And now yeah, now you know part of
(02:41):
that was also to upgrade the slipway there so that
the World Heritage Cruise and also the Gordon River Cruise
boats can be berthed for maintenance on the slipway. So
that's that's also another part of this project as well. Yeah,
it's taken some time and I guess that's why, you know,
(03:03):
the community is a little bit.
Speaker 1 (03:05):
I guess it'll be hesitant wanting to know what is
going on.
Speaker 2 (03:09):
Yeah, but you know, once it's all completed, I know
there is a bit of a upsetting at the moment
down there with how things are happening. But once it's
all completed, it will.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
Be a great thing on people's faces.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
There will be and you know, it's one of them
things that we build these things for the future and
hopefully what it may do for Straw is open up
Strawn again as as one of the major tour destinations
of Tasmania, which it was in the heyday with when
the boats first started and even after that when they
(03:41):
continued on and the railway has taken over a little
bit more of that.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
As you say, infrastructure is de deeriorated, so we need
to build new stuff.
Speaker 2 (03:49):
It is, mate, it is, it is, and we need
to be looking outside the square as well of what
we can do. You know, we see quite often now
these around the world races with yachts. Would be good
to see them coming through that, coming through the heads
and into strang and you know, imagine what they'll do
for Strawn and.
Speaker 1 (04:09):
Map around the world.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
It will, it will.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Okay then Shane, let's secured to all the Council Information
Office Collision next Wednesday.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Yeah, so the office will be closed between twelve thirty
pm and two thirty pm on Wednesday, the fourteenth of May.
That's so staff can attend a staff all staff meeting.
So it's only for that two hour period. But you know,
I guess, yeah, just as long as residents are aware
that two hours that the office will be closed.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
Right, we'll just give the my phone number the six
four seven one four seven doubles.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Yeah, so if any need to direct any issues and
they'll be directed to the on call team who will
take questions and you know feed them to the relevant parties.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
Yeah, Okay, to the Strong Waterfront Precinct redevelopment project itself. Now.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Yeah, so there has been changes to the public toilets
and the footpath access from Tuesday, the sixth of mate.
This excuse me. So the existing toilet bok has been
removed and will not be accessible to the public. I
was hoped that the new toilets would be opened prior
to remove the existing toilets. However this has not been
(05:22):
able to occur. So we've still got the toilets down
there at the Slipway as well, so that they will
remain open and open from seven am to seven pm.
We've also got the toilets around at People's Park which
are open twenty four hours of course, and then also
(05:43):
were strong beachs which are opened twenty four hours as well.
So you know, it's this waterfront development will see the
primary car park for the waterfront area now at the
Slipway as well. So yeah, and I guess you know
when we talk about public toilets, Strawns, you know, the
only community on the West Coast has got three public toilets,
(06:05):
so there's certainly plenty of places for the public to
go if they need.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
To need to do it, you know what. Yes, Okay,
let's talk about the bi annual cleanup.
Speaker 2 (06:17):
Yes, registrations are closing soon on that, Andrew, so we
need that registered before five pm on Friday the sixteenth
of May, so another week away near mate. So this
is this happened twice a year, so it is a
free cops collection for a large unwanted item. So then
(06:39):
one is that we can't put on our normal weekly collection.
There's an opportunity for there for residents that can't get
their large items to the transfer stations. Needs an opportunity,
which that will happen on Tuesday the twentieth and Wednesday
the twenty first of May. So yeah, get.
Speaker 1 (06:58):
Registered there and get it picked up.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
Get it picked up.
Speaker 1 (07:01):
Yeah, OK. If the Mcquarie Hedge Road works there, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
So grading of the road, the gravel section of Mcquarie
Harbor Road, which will happen from the fish Farm intersection
to the beach entrance. We'll start, we'll have started, sorry,
and they'll continue on to Tuesday the twentieth of May.
It's part of the Unsealed Roads maintenance service level program
(07:27):
that we're undertake. And please if mators can be patient
and follow traffic management signage and direction and it is
it's probably a little bit overdue that Mcquarie Harbor Road,
but you know we're on to it now. It certainly
does need need a bit of work.
Speaker 1 (07:45):
And get the patients in the car if you're on the.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
Roads exactly right, mate, Yeah, and I guess you know,
it's one of them things that we need to get
these things done, and we need to do it when
you know, when there's not the traffic down there and
the will we get what we normally it during during
the summer period.
Speaker 1 (08:02):
Right, I can then shame, we're going to take a break.
You're on seven excess
