Speaker 1 (00:02):
Now on seven Excess, it's time to talk all things
wild West with Shane Pitt, Mayor of the West Coast
wild West.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
It certainly is good morning Shane Mayor on air.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
Good morning Andrew. How are you not.
Speaker 2 (00:15):
Too bad for a Friday? Not too bad? You're off
to work?
Speaker 3 (00:19):
Yes, head in that way, mate, yes, worries.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Okay, we're going to talk some listener questions.
Speaker 4 (00:24):
Now.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Two came in. Actually, who is responsible for keeping the
welcome to Queenstown sign in the rocks on the left
coming into Queenstown from Hobart. This person says she's always
loved seeing it driving past, but it's a bit overgrown
and hard to read. She would love to tide eat up.
If there's a group that would welcome that type of thing.
Speaker 3 (00:44):
Yes, mate, well that's a very good question. It was
put in place some years ago now by a couple
of local people right in our community. And a few
years ago now the local Scout group cleaned it up
up and we'll started cleaning up. We didn't quite get
it finished so and then the Lions Club also assisted
(01:07):
with that. So yeah, no, it's something which we've been
going to get back up there again. To continue on
and spruce it up a bit.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
I guess it's about priorities.
Speaker 3 (01:18):
It is, it is, And I guess the weather is
our issue because this time of the year the Scouts
have a break and we don't you know, we don't
seem to be able to get up there during the
year because of the weather. But you know, we've still
got on our radar and we'll still continue. We might
get the Lions Club up there some stage in the
(01:38):
near future and give it a bit of a birthday.
Last time we painted the rocks again and it's due
for another coat.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
I think fair enough. Okay to the next question, how
can the West Coast Council condemn people living in old
sheds without any sanitation, water electure? Is that he connected.
I've put a new house sin Queen Town, I could
not occup occupied without inspection by health inspector. That wish
you to certificate to allow him to move in?
Speaker 3 (02:06):
Oh, I guess yeah, No, Well, we don't condone it
because people shouldn't be doing that, and if we know
about it, we'll certainly get our compliance to him to
go and take it take a look. And so for
that resident would like to call counsel and make an
anonymous call and we can go out and with the
address where that where that container is located, we can
(02:31):
go and have a look at.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
It, investigate it. Yes, okay to other council information now yes, mate, Yes,
a new general manager.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
Yeah, exciting news, Andrew, so please to announce that Scott
riley Is has been appointed as a new general manager
and he starts next week, So on Monday, the third
of February, he takes up office in Queenstown here and
he'll be living in Queenstown which is great and him
and his wife and he's certainly got some experience in
(03:03):
local government over thirty years in the sector which is.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
And he's from Queen's Queen's Land.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
He's from queen well, he's from Queensland now. But he
did do a stinted Circular Head counsel up in the
Circular Head there at Smifton and and you know, I've
know the guy from when he was up there, although
and he met him a few times on different meetings
around the state. But he had to leave his position
(03:32):
in Circular Head because his father was pretty crooked at
the time. He had to go back to the mainland
to look after the property there. Since then of course
his father has passed and he's come back to wants
to come back to Tasy and soon. The West Coast
was his ideal location, given that he spent a bit
of time down here when he was in Tasmania, and
(03:54):
it's yeah, it's great to see and certainly got some
good experience behind him and talking to the X Mayor
of Circular Head Daryl up there, he certainly had high
regards for Scott.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
So congratulations to Scott when he starts next week. Okay,
then you'll love planning for community input.
Speaker 3 (04:13):
Yeah, So, as we said in the past, Andrew, this
annual plan and the budget's certainly an important document for
Cancel because it guides the council on our next year
and where we want to spend the money and what
the community would like us to spend the money on.
So it's we're open for suggestions for the annual plan.
(04:33):
So it's now time to get to get them in
and if people can can do so by our website
or just call into the office.
Speaker 2 (04:42):
Fair enough, And that's to be done by next Monday.
Speaker 3 (04:45):
Yes, mat, Yeah, that's right. Yeah, so Monday, third of February,
So you know we're hoping that we get as many
as you can, as information as we can.
Speaker 2 (04:55):
Fantastic, Okay, then that Shame, We're gonna have to check
a quick sure break, then we'll back week.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
No worries, mate, We keeping you in touch with your community.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
We're talking with the Mayor of the West Coast, Shame
Pitt on West Coast seven excess. Ah, yes, welcome back.
It is mayor on here with Shame Pitt. How are
we in Yeah, yeah, sh'll break sure yeah, sure break yes, Shame.
We're talking about health and Wellbeing strategy for twenty twenty
five to twenty thirty.
Speaker 3 (05:34):
Yeah. So this is the first time we've done this, Andrew,
and it's it's a little guide to the council team
over the next five years on our health and well being.
So you know, it's something which we pride ourselves on
and we want to make sure that our community has
all the you know, the recreational facilities they need.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
And we've been talking about this for the last couple
of weeks.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
We have, mate, Yes, and it is important that our
community are healthy. And I guess the other thing this
also brings in is our health services as well. We
want to make sure that there's as good as what
the state government can offer. So quite often we're advocating
for better health services here on the West Coast and
(06:22):
we see that as a priority of ours along with education.
Of course, even though that it is a state government responsibility,
we still need to make sure that they are doing
the right thing by our community.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
We need the input as well.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
Exactly right, and we need an input from our community.
And that's what the strategy is all about.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
Now, if people want to get involved with this, what
do they do?
Speaker 3 (06:44):
Yeah, so feedbacks needs to be provided before Monday, the
twenty fourth of February twenty twenty five and the strategy
can be found on the website or council office and
the agency. So they want to take a look at that.
Any suggestions that and improvements that need to be done
with that strategy sounds great.
Speaker 2 (07:04):
And I'll tell you what. Your website's easy to get.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
Through, yes, yeah, well, and there's you know, it's always
an ongoing mission to keep that updated.
Speaker 2 (07:12):
So you okay, Now, position of vacant, you've got quite
a few of them at the moment.
Speaker 3 (07:18):
We have got a few, mate, Yes, it's I don't know,
it's unusual for the West coast. But no, it is
good though that we've got you know.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
New people coming in.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
That's right, yeah, ideas exactly right.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
So what have we got there?
Speaker 3 (07:31):
So we've got the Manager of Infrastructure and Operations. So
that's a it is a you know, it's an opportunity
for a person to lead and manage the functions of
infrastructure and our operations team and provide that leaderships that's
required in that department, also advice as a general manager.
(07:52):
And that closes on Sunday, the second of February, So
not very longly I've left in.
Speaker 2 (07:57):
That public scratching the head. Could I do this?
Speaker 1 (08:00):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (08:00):
I think you know it's unless you apply, you don't
really know. That's exactly right. Yeah, okay.
Speaker 2 (08:07):
Coordinator Projects and Infrastructure.
Speaker 3 (08:09):
Yeah, so that's another important job for us, Andrew. We've
got a lot of projects on the on the table
at the moment and we need someone to continue to
drive them. So our last project coordinator he moved into
the infrastructure role manage a role. So now we're looking
(08:29):
after both the impositions now, so that also closes on Sunday,
the second of February. Right, We're going to Finance Office
US yes to effectively and efficiently coordinate council's financial system
and procedures. And that closes on Monday, the third of February,
So you know, a great opportunity there of someone that
likes to dabble with numbers.
Speaker 2 (08:54):
Also an executive opposite to provide support to the General
Manager and yourself.
Speaker 3 (08:58):
Yeah, so it's disappointing that our new newly appointed THEO
has has to leave. He's doing a great job there.
So you know, it's an opportunity there for someone else
to step into that role. And that closes on Monday,
the tenth of February as well. So it's a it's
(09:21):
a great position and you know, you know that person
does a fair bit for the General Manager and myself
and it's you know, it is certainly a position in.
Speaker 2 (09:31):
That position it is Yeah, okay, you've got a team
member facilities position going.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
Yeah, so that's responsible for assisting and efficient operation and
maintenance of council buildings and our facilities. So yeah, it's
an important role and as most people know, we have
got a lot of facilities on the West Coast, so
it's it's great that we're being able to offer that
position again.
Speaker 2 (09:57):
Yeah, we've got two coming up for one in Quiz,
one in Strawn.
Speaker 3 (10:02):
That's the municipal employees. So they're the guys around there
on the looking after our parks and gardens et cetera.
Once a full time position based in Queensy and the
other ones also a full time position based in Straw.
And so as you mentioned Andrew, and they all close
(10:22):
on the eleventh of February fair enough.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
And a payroll officer another job mate, So you know
this is this is also an opportunity for those that
they like to dabble in in numbers, et cetera and payroll.
Speaker 3 (10:37):
So yeah, good opportunity for an individual there that likes
to you know, around the numbers et cetera when it
comes to payroll.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
So we want to get paid.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
Yeah, that's right there, we do.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
Our council was down there at the Mount Larles, Strawn
picnic on Sunday and they had the West Coast Spirit
Awards for recipients.
Speaker 3 (10:59):
Yeah we did, mate, and it was great to see
the all the reciproents there too were there to receive
their certificates and you know, these these people certainly do
a very good job in our community volunteers and it's
great to see that we're able to, you know, I
guess give them something that they give so much back
(11:23):
back to the community. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
So the.
Speaker 3 (11:27):
I guess the recipients that this year were jeff illef
from over there at Taller and then Tom Firms from
from Strawn. So both these gentlemen do a fair bit
for their communities and and the whole West Coast as well.
So yeah, and then we also have Wendy Harvey over
there in Zoon who's was nominated for long term involvement
(11:50):
and volunteering improving the quality of life of locals over.
Speaker 4 (11:53):
There in Zoo.
Speaker 3 (11:54):
And of course the Zone Golf Club Park Run, which
is exciting for for the whole West Coast really and
not not just Zoom, but it certainly has you know,
we see a lot of tourists and a lot of
people that like to do the park runs around Australia
that come.
Speaker 2 (12:11):
It's not just here there everywhere they are.
Speaker 3 (12:12):
Mate they are and the z Everyone wants to take
Z on their their wish list of the park runs
and Zen's the only Z in the park round so
it's great to see.
Speaker 2 (12:22):
So yeah, know, well, the council has been very active
this week and of course the weather's played a lot
to us as well.
Speaker 3 (12:29):
Yes, the weather's been beautiful, mate, hasn't it? And you know,
I hope it keeps up for a little bit longer.
We've got a little bit more all left of summer.
Speaker 2 (12:35):
So well, like it is going to be about thirty
four degrees on Monday.
Speaker 3 (12:38):
Oh that's a that's a bit warm. It is warm.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
Oh and then Shane, that has been mere or on here.
Thank you for today. We'll talk next Friday
Speaker 3 (12:45):
Okay, mate, thank you
