Speaker 1 (00:00):
All right, Yeah, it's time for Mere on air for
this week. And joining me in the studio right now
is our friend, the Mayor of the West Coast, Shane Pitt.
Good morning, sir, how are you?
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Yeah, good morning?
Speaker 1 (00:11):
How things make are pretty good for a Friday eight Yeah.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
She's not real good out there. The weather was not at.
Speaker 1 (00:16):
The moment, but it's supposed to be good for the
weekend for those Christmas events coming up, but we'll talk
about them later on. First up, were just wanting to
reiterate what's going on with the Zee and pool. Yeah,
well that you.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Know, as mentioned before, the pool, we hope to have
the pool open for part of the season. And yeah,
it looking like February that the gym over there at
Zoom will be completed and also the pool will be
part of that completion. So but moving on, if people,
you know, even though the Zoom pool is closed, we've
(00:53):
still got the quench Down Pool open now, which opened
on the first of December. So the opening times for
the for the Queenstown Paul Ken be found on our website.
But also you know, from from the start of December
through to the twenty first, it's Monday to Friday, one
thirty pm to seven pm and Saturdays and Sundays twelve
(01:15):
pm to six pm, and then after I guess the
twenty second to the sixth January, Monday to Fridays twelve
pm to seven pm, and then Saturday and Sunday twelve
pm to six pm, and then of course continuing on
till the end of March. So you know, we should
if we get the pull opening zo start of February
(01:38):
or sometime from through February, we should, you know, we
should see at least a month with the Zoom pool open,
so which would be great, you know, and the guys
are working on it as quickly as possible, and yeah,
so we want to make sure that it's open when
the gym's open.
Speaker 1 (01:53):
Yeah, absolutely, but got to get it right. We don't
want any future problems. I've already been in.
Speaker 2 (01:58):
That situation, skirt, I don't want to happen. Don't want
it to happen again. So we want to make sure
it's right this time. Absolutely, you know it's but you know,
all I can say is when the pool does open
in February, which which will give us that month of March,
and that residents do use the pool. Yeah, because you know,
(02:20):
we detriment if we open the pool and then we
don't get many people turning up.
Speaker 1 (02:25):
Yeah, well there's that, there's that. That's that's right.
Speaker 2 (02:28):
So yeah, there's been a fair bit of money putting
to the pool to directify the issues that we've we've
found and you know, as we've mentioned here before, that's
unfortunately these things happen, but hopefully you know, well not
hopefully we will get it right this time so it
doesn't have to it doesn't happen again.
Speaker 1 (02:47):
So there you are as Zeen residents February, get out
and enjoy the pool once it opens. All right, Now
you've got an update in relation to the water situation
with the straw and playground.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
Yeah, so tas water for short, as that the water
on the straight Strong playground should be on by Christmas time.
So we've they've finally worked out what they're what they're
going to do there, and they've got their cage and
everything built for their meter and yeah, so I've told
(03:19):
staff it will be yeah, before Christmas, So hopefully that happens,
and if not, we'll continue to push.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
Them, yes, make sure it does happen.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
So absolutely, the residents have been good to come forward
to say, you know, complain about it, which has got
great and it gives us a bit more ammunition when
we go to to talk to Taz Water and we
took it all away the top this time.
Speaker 1 (03:41):
So yeah, thanks excellent. All right, Now, still on the parks,
the Roseberry Skate and play Space is opening.
Speaker 2 (03:48):
Yes, so that's opening this afternoon at three pm. Yeah,
so we thought we're still weighing on a couple of
the large umbrellas to turn up, but we thought it,
you know, given that the school holiday periods almost upon us,
we thought we should get it open for the children
over the holiday period. So yeah, we'll be opening that
(04:09):
today and then as soon as the large umbrellas arrive
we'll make sure they go up as as soon as possible.
But yeah, it's great to see that we finally got
that playspace over there in Rosebury ready to be opened up,
and we should have the Rosbury School students and parents
and teachers will be over there and a few counselors.
(04:31):
So yeah, you come along and enjoy the opening of
the new Roseberry Skate and play space.
Speaker 1 (04:39):
Excellent. Just while we're on it too, what's an update
on Pedley full park over here.
Speaker 2 (04:44):
Yeah, we're just looking at it and it's things have
gone reasonably well I think, but yeah, it's probably a
few months away yet.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
Worries all right now. Of course the office is closed
over the Christmas period. You've got the details there.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Yeah, so that's closed from twelve noon on Tuesday, the
twenty fourth December and reopening eight thirty am on Thursday
the second of January. So but if anyone's got any
dog related emergencies, please contact has Police with regard to
that and any other emergencies. Just call the six four
seven one four seven hundred number and then if there's
(05:22):
any serious emergencies or serious concerns, your call will be
relayed to the on call personnel yep. And of course
if there's any inquiries relating to the highways or roads
outside the town boundaries, please, as we've said this numerous times,
SCO contact the Department of State graph on thirteen hundred
(05:44):
one three nine nine double three. And I think you
know there's some residents in Strawn of there's been an
issue on one of the roads down there in Harvey
Street that's been on going for some time and we've
been in contact with State graph for a for a
few months now and even and also tas Water. But
(06:05):
soon we've got we've finally got a response from State Growth.
Will be the number that number they can ring them
as well, and the more people that ring State Growth
regarding that issue, the more I think, the more notice
I'll probably take of our residents in US. So yeah,
it's one of them things we've just got to keep
(06:25):
peppering away.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
Absolutely all right now, just before we go to the break,
we've got times of the rubbish pickup over Christmas.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
Yeah, so the rubbit Christmas week garbage collection will be
Monday of the twenty thirty December Zen Straw and Linda
and Gormanston. Tuesday will be Queenstown. Wednesday of course is
Christmas Day, so we know pick up and then Thursday
Rosebury and tallor as normal.
Speaker 1 (06:55):
Excellent. Looks like it's going to be not too bad
a weekend weather wise, particularly with the Strawn and Roseberry
pageants coming up over the weekend.
Speaker 2 (07:03):
Shane, Yeah, so the Strong pageant there on Saturday five
point thirty pm down there at the Strong Golf Club,
which is it should be a great event this year
with Samatazo bringing up or supplying some Mary Gay rounds,
et cetera for the kids here beyond. No, it's a
great event and I think it. Yeah, it's good to
(07:26):
see that these strong committees or these committees are organizing
some event for the children, you know, all our communities now.
And then of course on Sunday the Roseberry Community Christmas Party,
I guess you could, yeah, or event is on at
three pm on Sundays.
Speaker 1 (07:43):
With the parade, and then we've got Carrols later on.
So he's a deadly Senatorian Hurkhat is going to be
down here on Saturday at the Strong one, so it'll
be good for people to catch up with her. But yeah,
it's great to see the local all the local towns
putting on these great things, particularly some place like Rosebury
(08:05):
which probably hasn't had a lot of great news of late.
Speaker 2 (08:08):
Yeah, but every year there seems to be, yeah, some
Christmas activity for the kids in all our towns, which
is great to see. And you know, we're happy that
the council could be part of that with funding as well. Yeah,
and also a lot of inky and stuff goes on
behind the scenes with organizing things also, but yeah, no,
it is great and it's great that we've got these
(08:31):
volunteer committees that insist in. If it wasn't for these
volunteer committees, these events wouldn't happen. So that's great.
Speaker 1 (08:39):
Well, the shop fronts are obviously got Christmas lights in them.
They don't particularly good job in Roseary with that all
the organizers, so it's fantastic.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
Yeah, no, it is great, and it's you know, it's
one of them. It's that time of the year where
a lot of people brighten up there their houses and
there in their shops around the towns, and it's great
to see the lights up.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
So yeah, great, it's great. All right. Now, the draft
West Coast twenty thirty five Community Plan, let's touch on that.
Speaker 2 (09:07):
Yeah. So that's available to view online at West Coast
twenty thirty five dot com dot au or visit the
council for a view for a hard copy printed copy.
But you know, it is is important and it's not
only residents we want to capture here. We'd like to
see businesses also put in their you know, their information
(09:31):
in on any suggestions that may have been missed in
the draft form. And I guess you know, it's not
only our small businesses. We would like to see some
information from our large our larger businesses in our community.
Also so so and also we've got it online to
capture feedback closers twenty to December, so not long ago.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
Now, no, all right, okay, Now this is something we
don't really want to talk about. All we do, but
we don't want to talk about it, I guess, but
it needs to be pointed out. Abusive behavior from members
of the public.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
Yeah, so there's been an increase in council staff encountering
abuse abusive behavior from the public, both in person at
the council office and out in the field and also
via telephone. If you decide you're going to use vulgar
or intimidating language or personal abuse to council offers, we
may terminate the communications immediately. The incidents will be recorded
(10:33):
and reported and additionally, if staff at any time feel
threatened by your language your behavior, they will notify the police.
And if you have a complaint you would like to
discuss what council police, contact us on six four seven
one four seven hundred, but be polite about it, and
we know that there is people have got complaints and
(10:55):
we understand that but you know, we asked that people
are polite about their complaints and the way they talk
to staff exactly. You know, they're they're residents of our
community as well.
Speaker 1 (11:08):
So and a lot of the stuff, they're not the
decision makers anyway, so it's not their fault.
Speaker 2 (11:13):
No, exactly right. And a lot of the things aren't
outside of councils control. They're not they're not things that
council looks after all. You know, there's the things that
the state and federal government are responsible for. We can
advocate for it, but we can't do anything about it,
no I can. You know, we take it out on
our on our staff as well.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
I'm going to call it out for what it is.
It's stupid behavior because it doesn't do anybody any good.
It doesn't do the person complaining any good, and it
certainly doesn't do the workers. It doesn't do the council
any good. So it's just ridiculous behavior.
Speaker 2 (11:48):
Oh well, yeah, but it's not just the West Coast.
This is right across the and we're seeing it an
increase in this behavior right across Tasmania and Australia. So
it's not only in Tasmania either. So you know, the
Local Government Association and state government are looking at legislation
at the moment with regard to that, and there will
(12:09):
be some you know, well we're not sure what's going
to happen yet, but you know, the the rumors or
the talk going around at the moment, there will be
some serious implications for people that do are abusive on
the phone and just personal. So you know, it's just
you know, if you want to get something done, be
(12:29):
polite about it, then we will certainly strive to get
whatever your complaint is heard and an action.
Speaker 1 (12:39):
Yep, absolutely, And I mean if the council doesn't know
then there's an issue. That's one of the ways that
you guys know that there is a problem. But you know,
you can just do it in the right there's right
channels to go through for this. I know something is
going to be frustrating, but really at the end of
the day, there's no excuse for the types of behavior
(13:00):
exactly right.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
And you know, things do take a little a little
time to to action as well, so we need to
make sure that we've got everything in place. And you know,
we're in a modern society these days. There's a lot
of a lot of things we need to put in
place with regard to safety and regulation. So a lot
of these things and that the speed that some of
(13:22):
these things get action is because there's regulations in place
and also the safety of the workers also need taken
into account a lot, a lot more differently than what
they used to be in the past, So people need
to be a little bit more responsive there and we'll
work on it. But yeah, of course if people have
got issues, there is a you know, there is a
(13:44):
system in place with work requests. Now we are looking
at making changes to the website which will make it
easier for people to access some of these forms, and
you know, which will be a start on our front
to make sure that make it easier for people to
make complaints or put in work request etc.
Speaker 1 (14:05):
Yep, okay, all right, and last on the list today,
we've got a couple of positions vacant to the KENSIS.
Speaker 2 (14:12):
So there's a plan operator over in Zoo. That application
closes Sunday, the fifteenth of December. For further information, you
can contact council on that position or if you just
want to apply senior resume to careers at West Coast
dot TAZK, dot gov, dot au or put her in
the post with box sixty three Queens down. And also
(14:35):
we've got our executive officer position also vacant, and that
closes five pm Tuesday, the twenty fourth of December. So
a couple of great positions there, Skuba. And it's yeah,
our executive officer has been with us for some time
now and it's decided that it's time to hang up
the boots as such and move on. But we wish
(14:58):
wish her all the beat in a future endeavors. And yeah, no,
it's it's going to be sad to see her go.
Speaker 1 (15:07):
But.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
Everyone's life changes, and you know, it's great to see that.
Hopefully we'll pick up another applicant that's just as good
as what seem was, because it certainly was a good
mentor for a lot of our staff in there in
the office and certainly done a hell of all a
(15:29):
lot of work for myself and the and the general managers.
So I wish her all the best in the future.
And yeah, that's and while we're on that, Scoba, I
guess you've only got a week all, just a week
to go, yeah mate, So yeah, I won't be in
the studio next Friday. But we'll be online somewhere, so
(15:51):
but yeah, I wish you all the best making for
the future and hopefully you know, we see you back
around here some stage. I might see in Lone Sistem
at some stage as well, so I'll keep an eye out,
all right, come and catch up in some stage. No,
you've done a wealth of work for us here and
council as well, and you know in the community, and
(16:13):
especially you come along the line join the Lions Club,
which is great to see you long there helping out
and you know, we might give you a bit of
a bag in now and then, but that's.
Speaker 1 (16:22):
All right, that's part of it. We all give each
other a bagging checking.
Speaker 2 (16:26):
Out and that's what you know. What's what these these
service clubs are all about bringing people together, and especially
the Lions Club with means means mental health and things
like that. It's an opportunity for men to you know,
talk to each other. And yeah, and even you know,
the Lions clubs not only means now, it's ladies as well.
(16:46):
So you look at some of the other Lions clubs
around the West Coast there got ladies in their clubs
as well, which is great to see and you know.
It's yeah, it's good, it's good, and all the best.
Speaker 1 (17:00):
Thank you, and actually thank you. I say goodbye to
Suk as it was her last day before Christmas yesterday.
She's been fantastic over the last year or so and
it's been great to get to know her a little
bit further through our working relationship, although I have bumped
into it from time to time before that obviously through you.
But I want to thank you for your confidence and
(17:21):
friendship over the time and just want to wish you
all the best as well. And look, I'd love to
catch up with you in lawn system, so it will
certainly keep an eye out for each other.
Speaker 2 (17:32):
Yeah, thanks mate, and yeah, all the best.
Speaker 1 (17:34):
All right, thank you very much. All right, well we'll
leave it there. Thank you very much for joining us.
This has been Meyor on air with our Mayor Shane
Pitt joining us this morning.
