Speaker 1 (00:00):
Let's come around very quickly this week. But it is
time again for this week's edition of Mayor on air
and on the telephone. Joining us this morning, it is
our Mayor, Shane Pitt. Good morning, sir, another busy week
for you.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
Busy scurbo busy one, yes, but here again another Friday.

Speaker 1 (00:18):
Indeed, indeed, all right, Well, we haven't got any questions,
but we've got a bit of stuff to unpack this week,
that is for sure. First of all, we'll talk about
weather updates. Obviously there's been a lot been happening in
the last couple of weeks.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
Yeah, it's been a phoebit going on on the West Coast,
isn't there? And a bit of damage caused by the
recent weather. But I think we're over that now and
you know, I think things are almost back to normal,
though there's still a little bit of debrie around our
roads and talking about our roads scurbough, Yeah that the

(00:52):
road's on the West coast at the moment. Our state
roads aren't in good condition.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
No they're not.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
So recently wrote again to State Roads and also got
on the telephone tour also with regard to the Zone
Highway just outside of Zone there and also the Murchison
Highway on the northern side of the Cradle Mountain turn off,

(01:20):
and also the Cradle Mountain Link rater off. Yes, in
a pretty bad condition at the moment also, so.

Speaker 1 (01:28):
I think the frost, yeah, But I think the frustration
is you would agree with me on this one, is
every time it rains and after and because this can
be after they've repaired the road two or three weeks later,
more potholes and after the recent storms we've had on
the Murgerson Highway in particular, these are the worst I've seen.
Not only have we got one pothole which is quite

(01:49):
deep that we have to avoid, but there's three on
that same lane way. Now surely they can get and
they can listen to the locals and think, Okay, well
what we're doing is it's not working.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
Yeah, And I guess that all comes back to the
contractors that have been doing this work. Then I guess
where the issues on the Merchant and Highway are as,
some of the new areas that they've just done some
work on, and you know, there's an issue that they
need to work through. And I guess that's something which

(02:22):
stay grateful waking up with these contractors with regard to
the condition that the roads are in. And we understand
that the roads on the West Coast do a couple
a lot of rain, and I guess it's more highlighted
recently with the amount of frost that we had some

(02:43):
of the material that they were laying down on them
frosty bit seems to be the areas that may have
been affected by whatever they were laying down on the.

Speaker 1 (02:53):
Road exactly where you think of, well, you think of
Anthony Road as well, and we won't dwell on this
too much longer shame, but that's pretty much an original
road which I think was it set up was that
that road on Anthony Road done by the hydro. Is
that right? It was set up by and it's not
too bad. Oh yeah.

Speaker 2 (03:14):
But you've got to also remember too, Scurvo that when
the hydro build their roads, they do leave them for
a period of time unsealed, so the the traffic that
goes over them roads is able to compact the the
under carrier. Whereas you know State Road when we we

(03:35):
highlighted the taller north of Tuller years ago that when
it was done, the amount of complaints that State Groath
got about from from locals here on the West Coast
about the cars getting dirty because of but they were
trying to leave it so that it could settle. So yeah,
there is there is issues that we do faith as well.

(03:57):
And also you know when we do these roads on
our state highways, are they leaving him long enough impacting
him long enough?

Speaker 1 (04:08):
You know?

Speaker 2 (04:09):
And that also affects the conditions of the roads also,
especially with the weather here on the West coast, that
we've only got a short period of time when we've
got that construction period. So yeah, but when you talk
about that so far the Strawn will they lie high

(04:31):
between Strawn and Queens which has been recently done by
Great Coats standing up pretty well. And you know there
may be some things that they can take out of
that construction period that they can use on some of
these other constructions further north.

Speaker 1 (04:48):
Indeed, all right, well we'll leave it there. As far
as the roads, we can talk about that till the
cows come home. But anyway, the Queenstown Gym updates obviously
you want to watch the sort of put us in
the right direction.

Speaker 2 (05:01):
There, Yes, I guess, so we are looking at you know,
people probably are aware that the the the roof collapsed
in part of that over the old squash courts in
there in the gym, but that the gym has been
open again now, I believe. But yeah, we're still working

(05:23):
on through repairs for that roof or replacement of the
roof above the squash courts. But people will remember that
that squash court area was going to be e mark
to become the climbing wall where the climbing rock climbing
wall was going to go. So yeah, we'll see what
comes to that. We have we have got our insurance

(05:45):
people looking at that at the moment to see whether
that's an option for us as well with regard to
replacement of that roof.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
Cool and any other details about the sporting precincts sort
of around the West Coast as well. Have you got
updates there.

Speaker 2 (05:59):
Oh, well, we've got a bit of an update I
guess from the zoom Pool. Yeah, so, I guess we've
found other issues with the zoom Pool. So we've engaged
Hydriller Petry Limited to undertake the repairs of the zoom Pool,
which people know about. But there's been some delays with

(06:22):
that due to the fact that the deep end of
the pool has started to drop. So once we've got
that rectified, the pool will finish the plumbing there and
the vinyl lining will be installed, yes, just to try
and just so we've that pool was there for longevity.

(06:43):
And so we're hoping that these works will be completed
by the end of this year so we can have
an early early opening next year. And the works on
the pool will will happen at the same time as
the upgrades to the gym over there and that multi
purpose center. So once that's all completed, you know, we'll

(07:07):
see a brand new toilet and change room facilities at
the pool, including an undercover area so people can get
out of the sun and also the rain if of course,
we're going to make sure that we cover that offer
during summer we do get rain, of course, and you

(07:28):
know that this will allow for a space so that
people can book birthday parties and et cetera while the
pool's open. So yeah, once it's completed, it will be
an ideal facility. But there is been a couple of
setbacks with regard to that, but hopefully we'll still have
the facility open early next year or later this year

(07:49):
early next year, but it probably looks like more more
likely early next year, so that I hope. I'm still
hoping that there is a swimming season for the Zoom.

Speaker 1 (08:00):
Indeed, absolutely all right, we'll move down to the West
Coast Community Plan have your say for twenty thirty five.
That's still open.

Speaker 2 (08:10):
It's yeah, so it's open until today, thirteenth of September.
So the online survey is still there. People want to
take part in that, yeah, so we've only got to
today mate, So those people still want to have say,
they've got an opportunity. But no, it's great to see

(08:32):
the engagement we've had from the community, especially at the
pop up sessions. They've been quite popular around the communities.
And we'll see you see what comes at once the
consultants come back and report back to council.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
This is the Mare on Air for this week, Part
two with our Mayor Shane Pitt As we continue now
and a reminder of our expressions of interest for the
removal of abatement nuisance.

Speaker 2 (08:57):
Yeah, so it's getting that time with the season again
scurvo with fire risks upon us. So as every year,
we call for expressions of interest for assisting with removal
of abatement ustances around our communities. So that expression of
interest must be received by five pm Friday, eleventh of October,

(09:21):
so almost well, not quite a month away now, scurvo.
So if any any organizations or businesses out there would
be interested in putting in expressions of interest, it's yeah,
please either email WCC at West Coast dot TAZ dot

(09:42):
com dot au or sending expressions of interest to PA
box sixty three, Queens.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
Down all right. West Coast Spirit Awards, we've got those
coming up.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
Yeah, So there are twenty twenty four West Coast Spirit
Awards which celebrate people, organizations and events that have made
an outstanding contribution to the West Coast community for the
past year. Can be nominated by contacting Community Consultation at
West Coast dot TAZ dot gov dot au or drop

(10:14):
into the council office to receive an application form. So
nominations closed five pm Friday, the twenty second of November.
There's a great opportunity survey for us to recognize those
volunteers in our community to do an outstanding job. And
also our organizations. Now we've got a few in our

(10:35):
community that do some fantastic work in our community. To
know for our residents. So you know, please if anyone's
got someone they not to nominate, please.

Speaker 1 (10:49):
Do so, absolutely not. It would be very very good
indeed if it would do that, because it's always a
great award to give out. All right, and we'll just
remind you now of positions vacant, yees.

Speaker 2 (11:02):
So there's a few positions vacant. We've got a team
members facility in Queenstown, and we've also got some Munici
employees both in Queenstown and our Roseberry depots. So also
then vacant positions closed today and so if anyone's interested,

(11:23):
you've got to five pm today to lodge an application
for employment. So you know, it's it is a great
career for people that wish, I guess do something different
in their working life.

Speaker 1 (11:40):
Indeed, opportunity yep, excellent. All right, Well, thank you for
sharing the details with us this morning, Mayor Shane Pitt,
and thanks for your time on Mirror and Ear for
this week. You've got the weekend off.

Speaker 2 (11:51):
Now I'm at work this weekend. That's why I'm on
the phone mate, because I'm still at work. Yeah, so
we'll be all working all weekend.

Speaker 1 (11:59):
Okay, Well, don't work, don't work too hard, mate, all right,
promise me.

Speaker 2 (12:04):
Oh good nice, no worries at all, SCO. And you know,
I guess hopefully the weather improves a little bit. We've
had a couple of fine days.

Speaker 1 (12:14):
Yeah, not too bad.

Speaker 2 (12:16):
You haven't been as it.

Speaker 1 (12:18):
Is supposed to be cold tomorrow and they're supposed to
be snowed to about three hundred meters tomorrow. But I'll
believe it when I see it.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
And I think our communications are all back online again now.
We have a few issues with n being in Zoo
and Strawn and with regard to some work they need
to do on me Mount read there, but I think
they're all back up and running here.

Speaker 1 (12:40):
We'll be back on running it with one O seven
point one because we were affected there too, So yeah,
thank goodness for that. All right mate, thanks for your time.
We'll talk to you next week.

Speaker 2 (12:50):
Okay, thanks.

Speaker 1 (12:51):
You have to see it by that's me a shame
