Speaker 6 (01:22:59):
What is the best?
Speaker 29 (01:23:00):
I can't?
Speaker 10 (01:23:01):
It's doctor and Missus Georges.
Speaker 11 (01:23:04):
Men shall not live by bread alone, but by every
word that proceeded out of the mouth of God.
Speaker 12 (01:23:12):
It is time to bring on the word.
Speaker 11 (01:23:16):
This is the preacher of the week. Keep in like
right here to the me and Miss Jones show with me, Doctor,
Miss Jones, thrilled to.
Speaker 16 (01:23:25):
Be able to share just the thought with you that
I hope will be an encouragement to you, a challenge
to you, and inspiring to you as we all speak
to surrender more fully to the Lord.
Speaker 8 (01:23:34):
Let's pray, Lord Jesus. I thank you that your word
is alive. Speak. We are your sons and daughters, and
we came to hear in Jesus' name.
Speaker 63 (01:23:44):
Amen.
Speaker 16 (01:23:46):
Not too long ago a friend came to the door,
but I didn't know it was this friend. She knocked
on the door loudly, consistently, passionately, aggressively, and she would
not stop. And it was one of those days where
I wasn't expecting anyone. The kids were gone, my husband
was out for the day. It was just a quiet day.
(01:24:08):
I was intentionally doing what we call in our family hibernating.
I had intentionally gone into the bedroom. I'd closed the door,
I was underneath the covers. I was watching my favorite show.
I wasn't expecting any deliveries, wasn't expecting anybody to show up.
Speaker 8 (01:24:22):
It was one of those days I was looking forward to.
Speaker 16 (01:24:25):
So when I heard the knocking on the door, I thought, well,
at some point this person's gonna get the message.
Speaker 8 (01:24:32):
And they will go away. But the knocking continued.
Speaker 16 (01:24:36):
It was loud and it was aggressive, and it was consistent,
and I was getting annoyed. The knocking would not stop.
So eventually I got myself up, I put a robe on,
I went to the door. I opened the door and
saw that it was this friend, and I said, as
I would, girl, why are you knocking on my door
like that?
Speaker 8 (01:24:57):
Her response to me was because us, I know you, she.
Speaker 16 (01:25:02):
Said, I know that one of two things was happening
on the other side of this door. I knew that
either you were in hibernation mode, which means you're intentionally
ignoring the knock on the door, or I knew that
the opposite extreme could also be true. That there's so
much chaos going on in here, with the kids and
the dogs, and the washing machine going and the dishwasher,
(01:25:23):
that there's so much happening in here that it is
possible that you didn't even hear the knock. So she said,
no matter which extreme it was, I knew that if
I did not knock passionately and persistently and consistently, you
might not come to this door. So I had to
knock with purpose and passion to get you.
Speaker 8 (01:25:43):
To pay attention.
Speaker 16 (01:25:46):
Jesus speaks in Revelation to a man named John, a
man who has walked with him and talked with him
in the three years of jesus earthly ministry.
Speaker 8 (01:25:58):
But when we meet the apostle John, who also wrote
the Gospel.
Speaker 16 (01:26:02):
When we meet the apostle John in the Book of Revelation,
he is now eighty some years old, and he is
being persecuted for his faith.
Speaker 8 (01:26:10):
He is sitting on the isle of Patnus.
Speaker 16 (01:26:13):
He has been relegated there because he has refused to
bend the knee. He has refused to give any symmetry
in his life of allegiance to any other emperor, any
other leader, outside of his allegiance to Christ and Christ alone.
And it occurs to me that there are very many
of you that are on the other side of the screen,
And as we all.
Speaker 8 (01:26:33):
Joined together today, and you know what it feels like
to be.
Speaker 16 (01:26:36):
Persecuted, not because you've done something wrong, but because, not.
Speaker 8 (01:26:41):
Perfectly but intentionally, you've tried to fix your eyes on Jesus.
Speaker 16 (01:26:45):
John has been exiled because not he's done something wrong,
but he has done something right. He has refused to
bend the knee to the emperor at the time, And
as a result of that, he's been exiled.
Speaker 8 (01:26:59):
To Patnus and on this island in.
Speaker 16 (01:27:02):
The midst of devastation and disappointment, in the midst of
a situation none of us would ever prefer to be in.
In the first chapter of the Book of Revelation, John
says that even right here on Patmus, on the Lord's Day,
I decided I was gonna be on in.
Speaker 8 (01:27:18):
The spirit that I was gonna worship the Lord anyhow.
Speaker 16 (01:27:22):
And I bet there are a bunch of us that
are gathered together that you've just decided, despite what I'm facing,
and despite what I'm going through, and despite what I'm feeling,
and despite the disappointment in my life, that I.
Speaker 8 (01:27:35):
Wouldn't prefer I wouldn't ask for this, but you've just decided.
As for me and my house, what we gonna do
is serve the Lord anyway.
Speaker 16 (01:27:44):
John decides I'm gonna worship the Lord. So on the
Lord's Day, while sitting in disappointment and discouragement, he decides
to worship, and y'all, worship opens up a window of revelation.
Speaker 8 (01:27:59):
This is a man who'd already walked with Jesus.
Speaker 16 (01:28:02):
He knew Jesus, he heard Jesus speak, he saw Jesus
perform miracles, and yet in Revelation, Jesus is revealed to
him more fully.
Speaker 8 (01:28:12):
The Book of Revelation is basically an unveiling.
Speaker 16 (01:28:15):
It's like the cover being lifted so that Jesus is
exposed in his fullness.
Speaker 8 (01:28:21):
John is worshiping on the Lord's.
Speaker 16 (01:28:22):
Day and he hears the voice behind him, and when
he turns to see who it, is that is talking
to him. He sees seven lampstands, and someone.
Speaker 8 (01:28:33):
Standing in the middle of the lampstands that is like
the Son of God. And in one hand he's got
seven stars.
Speaker 16 (01:28:39):
And he is standing there with power and all authority
in his hands. And and Jesus says to John, write
down everything you.
Speaker 8 (01:28:49):
See and everything that you hear.
Speaker 16 (01:28:53):
And Jesus gives him seven messages for seven churches warnings.
And the seventh of those churches is a church called
the Church of Laodicea, the complacent, indifferent, casual Christian. And
to those believers, he says, I stand at the door
(01:29:17):
Revelation three twenty, and I knock. If anyone will hear
my voice, if anybody will decide that they're.
Speaker 8 (01:29:26):
Gonna open up the.
Speaker 16 (01:29:27):
Door, he said, I'm gonna come in, and I'm gonna
feast with you.
Speaker 8 (01:29:30):
I'm gonna open up fellowship and communion with you, the
likes of which you have never experienced before. Jesus says,
I'm standing at the door and knocking.
Speaker 16 (01:29:40):
He describes his own posture to his own people as
being outside the door.
Speaker 8 (01:29:48):
Most of the time.
Speaker 16 (01:29:49):
When we hear that verse, it is used appropriately, so
in an evangelistic way to invite people to respond to
Jesus as their savior.
Speaker 8 (01:29:58):
But when Jesus said it, he talking to the church.
Speaker 16 (01:30:03):
He said, I am standing outside of the door of
my own church, and I am knocking on the doors
of those who have already placed faith in me, of
those who've already said that they're going to be followers
of mine.
Speaker 8 (01:30:17):
He says, somehow I've gotten relegated to the periphery of
my own bride's life. Lord help us if we're in
here and he's out there, help.
Speaker 16 (01:30:29):
Us, if we're busy and brimming with ministry activity and
good works and celebrating and singing songs and waving our
hands and on our knees and participating in religious events,
and Jesus is outside the door. Jesus says, I'm standing
outside the door, not just corporately, not just the global
(01:30:49):
body of Christ, not just your local church that you attend,
whether in North America or whatever continent in which you live.
He says, not only am I standing outside the door
of the church corporately, but I'm.
Speaker 8 (01:31:03):
Standing outside of the door of your own heart. Because
you are the church.
Speaker 3 (01:31:09):
The Holy Spirit of.
Speaker 8 (01:31:10):
God lives on the inside of you and on the
inside of me.
Speaker 16 (01:31:13):
And he says, to those who are already my bride,
to those that I've redeemed, to those that have accepted
me as savior, I am still outside of your door,
constantly knocking, inviting you to open up the door, to
surrender more, to walk in step with me more fully,
to hear my voice more completely, to be filled with
(01:31:35):
my spirit more fully. He says, I am always at
the door, inviting you, drawing you, calling you. If you'll listen,
even now, you will hear him at the door. Everything
you and I have experienced in all of our individual
(01:31:55):
lives and experiences over the last week, month, year, the disappointments,
that was him at the door, The discouragements that was
him at the door. The mountains, the joys, the triumphs,
the good days.
Speaker 8 (01:32:15):
That was him at the door.
Speaker 16 (01:32:17):
The diagnosis you weren't expecting, the difficulty in your finances,
the struggle you had in that relationship.
Speaker 3 (01:32:24):
All of it was Jesus saying.
Speaker 8 (01:32:26):
Draw near to me, and I will draw near to you.
Speaker 16 (01:32:33):
He speaks to the complacent, the indifferent, the lukewarm, the
casual Christian, and he.
Speaker 12 (01:32:41):
Says, I'm still calling you.
Speaker 8 (01:32:44):
I'm still at the door.
Speaker 16 (01:32:47):
I cannot get over this picture of Jesus standing at
the door, because.
Speaker 8 (01:32:53):
This is Jesus we're talking about.
Speaker 16 (01:32:58):
In ancient culture, knocking at the door is very different
than what you and I would think about in our
mind's eye. Very many of us we think about going
to our next door neighbor's house and we're knocking on
an actual physical structure in there inside living quarters. Weren't
that way in the first century. In Jesus or John
at the time that he was living. It wasn't the
(01:33:19):
same structural context, is what you and I might have
in our minds. Instead, there was not just one single
family dwelling, but they were basically looped together, all in
a compound. There was generational living, so you had toddlers
and teenagers, and parents and grandparents and you cousins and
your mama and him. They all lived together in the
exact same compound. There was land around the entire compound,
(01:33:43):
creating a courtyard of sorts. And then on the outside
of that property that compound where there was not only
just the family, but also the workers that were tending
and taking care of those structures or their gardens or
their all.
Speaker 8 (01:33:56):
Of the nuances of living there.
Speaker 16 (01:33:58):
They also had their cattles and their goats and their sheep,
all of those nuances.
Speaker 8 (01:34:02):
Happening in the courtyard. And then there was a fence line.
Speaker 16 (01:34:06):
There was an enclosure, so to speak, and the door
was on that exterior enclosure that fence line. So when
an ancient visitor would come to a compound, that ancient
visitor knew they might be outside of that exterior door
for quite some time before anybody on the inside even
(01:34:27):
recognized their presence. They knew up front they were going
to have to be incredibly patient if they came to visit, because,
depending upon the time of day, one of two extremes
might be happening inside that compound. Either the people that
lived there had already gone inside to the interior quarters,
which would make it even more difficult for them to
(01:34:48):
be aware of the visitor outside of that gate because
they were in hibernation mode, or the other extreme could
be happening that.
Speaker 8 (01:34:57):
It's so noisy and so busy.
Speaker 16 (01:34:59):
With all the generations that are living together, and the
animals that are bleeding and mooing, and all of the
chaos of the workers that are busy on the inside
it could be so busy and noisy either extreme.
Speaker 8 (01:35:13):
Let the visitor know before they even arrived that this
might take some time.
Speaker 16 (01:35:19):
They knew they had to be patient if they were
going to come, and if someone was going to become
aware of their presence.
Speaker 8 (01:35:27):
Think about the fact that Jesus patiently.
Speaker 16 (01:35:32):
Stands at your door. Jesus, we're talking about the king
of the universe. We're talking about the one who has
all power in his hands. We're talking about the one
who sits on high, who controls the throes of the universe,
who is right now as we're in this room and
(01:35:52):
in that room where you are. He is controlling the
throes of the galaxies that scientists haven't even yet discovered yet,
neighborhoods they're not even aware are there.
Speaker 8 (01:36:01):
He is the one who hangs the stars in the sky.
Speaker 16 (01:36:05):
He knows every single one of them by name, and
he knows every single one of them by number.
Speaker 8 (01:36:09):
This is the god of the universe.
Speaker 16 (01:36:11):
Who is making sure that the entire Earth rotates on
its axis at just the right speed to make.
Speaker 8 (01:36:17):
Sure that every single one of us has enough.
Speaker 16 (01:36:20):
Oxygen to be able to sustain life on this planet.
He is the one that makes sure the sun rises
and stays at its post. He is the one that
makes sure it swaps places with the moon at the
exact right time.
Speaker 3 (01:36:32):
He is the one who is in control of it all.
Speaker 16 (01:36:35):
And that great, majestic, all mount mighty, omnipresent, omniscient.
Speaker 8 (01:36:41):
All sovereign God is at your door. It's unbelievable.
Speaker 16 (01:36:51):
It's unbelievable to think that we have a savior who
patiently stands waiting on us.
Speaker 8 (01:37:00):
What manner of man is this?
Speaker 3 (01:37:03):
What manner of love is this? What manner of.
Speaker 16 (01:37:07):
Mercy and patience and grace is this? That when He
knows us, he knows that we go into hibernation mode.
He knows when your heart is indifferent. He knows when
you've been lukewarm. He knows when you've become defensive. He
knows when you've been hurt and want to walk away.
(01:37:30):
He knows when you've intentionally locked yourself away and turned
your back on him.
Speaker 63 (01:37:35):
He knows you.
Speaker 8 (01:37:37):
He knows when you've been too busy.
Speaker 16 (01:37:39):
He knows when the chaos surrounding your life, the exterior
noise of your life or the internal noise of your life,
has made it difficult for you to recognize his presence.
He knows, and grace comes anyway. I just can't get
(01:38:03):
over the fact that he keeps on coming for me,
and he keeps on coming for you. I'm so grateful
for a savior who passionate, patiently stands. But this is
also a messiah who passionately knocks, and a sovereign who
clearly speaks. An ancient visitor knew that they couldn't just
(01:38:24):
stand at the door and nobody would recognize them for
sure if they just stood there. No they had to
knock aggressively and passionately and consistently and over time to
make sure that someone was aware that they were standing
outside of that exterior enclosure. And then they had to
compound the noise. They had to level it up. They
(01:38:45):
couldn't just stand, They couldn't just knock. They had to
call out with a loud voice to make sure that
the people on the other side could hear the one
who was speaking.
Speaker 8 (01:38:57):
Do you know that you serve a savior who is
not just standing.
Speaker 16 (01:39:02):
You serve a God who loves you so much that
he takes the initiative to keep on knocking and to
keep on calling.
Speaker 8 (01:39:11):
The conviction in your heart that is not coincidence.
Speaker 16 (01:39:15):
That's the voice of God, all of the things that
have lined up in your life directing you in a
particular way. Someone else might call it coincidence. That's your
Savior at the door. He is knocking, he is calling,
he is drawing. He is reaching out to you, and
he is reaching out to me. And he says, if
(01:39:35):
you will respond to the Savior who passionately stands, and
the Messiah who passionately knocks, and the Savior who clearly speaks,
he says, if anybody hears my voice.
Speaker 63 (01:39:47):
And opens the door, He says, I'm coming in. Open
the door, Church, Open the door.
Speaker 8 (01:40:07):
The price he paid us too high.
Speaker 16 (01:40:14):
For us to be out here playing games. He has
redeemed us from too much. He has delivered us from
so deep a pit.
Speaker 8 (01:40:29):
For us to be casual.
Speaker 16 (01:40:31):
