Intimate partner violence and domestic abuse have become significant public health concerns .

Women are more likely to experience domestic violence during their lifetime than men

Over 61 million women have been abused by partners, while the figure for men is approximately 53 million.

According to Wisniewska, M. J. (2024, October 7), "Domestic Violence Statistics4," published by Break The Cycle, intimate partner violence occurring during adolescence is referred to as teen dating violence.

Approximately 16 million women and 11 million men who reported experiencing intimate partner violence in their lifetimes stated that their first experience happened before the age of 18.

this type of violence has debilitating effects on Physical and mental health throughout the victim's lifetime.

To prevent intimate partner violence, it is essential to have a comprehensive understanding and effective management of both risk factors, which heighten the likelihood of experiencing or perpetrating violence, and protective factors, which work to mitigate this risk.

In this powerful episode of The Meademusings Podcast, we delve into the harrowing yet inspiring journey of Sarah Doucette, an author and advocate for survivors of domestic abuse. Joining us from Maine, Sarah shares her deeply personal story of being trapped in an abusive relationship, exploring the complexities of emotional and financial control that often go unnoticed in discussions about domestic violence.

Sarah provides insight into her life before and during her marriage, revealing how she was drawn to her ex-husband's charismatic personality, only to discover the darker aspects of his character shortly after their wedding. She discusses the psychological games he played, the emotional turmoil she experienced, and the challenges of leaving an abusive partner multiple times.

Throughout the episode, Sarah emphasizes the importance of financial independence for survivors and highlights her advocacy work aimed at educating others about economic abuse. She shares her experiences with organizations that empower women to reclaim control over their finances, and her recent efforts to support victims of human trafficking.

As Sarah recounts her journey to freedom, she candidly discusses the mental health struggles that followed, including PTSD and suicidal thoughts. She encourages listeners to trust their instincts and seek help, reminding them that leaving an abusive relationship is a process, not an event.
