It is a step-by-step guide verysimilar to what I do with my

(02:16):
course to help you navigateyour mid-career GPS to whatever
is next.

you want to learn a little bitmore, go to my website,
https://johnneral.
com/resources and check out thatCareer Clarity digital course.
Career Clarity was somethingthat I thought I was supposed to
(02:39):
have for my entire career andwhen I started questioning what
was gonna be next or why I wasno longer happy in my job,
admittedly it was something thatshook me a little bit.
After all, I'm a planner.
I was supposed to haveeverything figured out and I was
supposed to move into my joband get promoted and be happy
(03:01):
and grateful, and everything wasjust gonna be fine until I
retired, and then I was going tohave a great retirement.
But as someone who had a25-year career in education, it
was shortly around the nine10-year mark of me in my
teaching career that I realizedI didn't want to do that anymore
.
I didn't want to be one ofthose teachers who essentially
(03:24):
has the proverbial goldenhandcuffs and couldn't leave
because of a pension and tenure,and I thought I just didn't
think it was fair for me to bein front of a classroom with
kids not truly passionate aboutwhat I was doing every day.
But here was the other piece Iwanted to make a bigger impact.
(03:46):
I wanted my impact to besomething far beyond what I was
doing in the classroom, andthat's why I got into teacher
professional development andadministration, and that took
time.
That took time for me to figureout exactly where I was going
to make the move.
And so at the end of thisepisode, I'm going to share with
(04:06):
you two questions that wereabsolutely pivotal in helping me
make my career change, and theyare the same questions I ask my
clients today.
So when you think about careerclarity, it is far more than you
just being confident or assuredin what you do and why you do
(04:29):
it.
Having career clarity is anopportunity to self-reflect
about the values you bring to ajob, the interests you have in
the work you get to do, themotivators or influencers that
drive you to keep doing the workand doing it better every
(04:50):
single day, the fears that youhave about doing that job or
working in that industry orwondering where your path is
going, and having a cleardestination in mind.
Path is going and having aclear destination in mind, and
it is also about having thenecessary clarity around the
(05:11):
value you bring.
And when I say values and value, here's the difference.
The values are the things thatdrive and motivate you.
It's how you show up, it's thethings that people get to know
about you, because that's whatyou demonstrate, in a sense of
how you lead, how youcommunicate, how you treat
(05:34):
people.
But the value you bring is allabout the technical knowledge,
the leadership expertise, thethings that you do that drive
results day in and day out, because they are tangible in a
completely different way andcompanies and organizations want
(05:57):
that, value that and respectthat, because that's helping
them move their overall goalsforward.
Career clarity is everythingfor your next move, because
that's helping them move theiroverall goals forward.
Career clarity is everything foryour next move.
It's why I coach my clientsthrough building what I call
their mid-career GPS.
There are four steps tobuilding a mid-career GPS, and
(06:18):
they are.
It is about the preparation, the career clarity you need to
figure out whatever's going tobe next.
It is the positioning how youstrategically position yourself
in the market to go after thecompany's positions and roles
that you believe are the bestfit for you.
(06:40):
It is about promoting who youare and what you do to
communicate that value from aplace of service and doing so in
a way that, whether you'renetworking or you're
interviewing or you're simplytalking to your friends and
family.
It is about promoting why youdo what you do and why that's a
(07:01):
value to a particularorganization.
And the last part is how youshow up.
It is all about your brand andreputation and how you show up
day in and day out to be theamazing professional you are
Having.
Career clarity drives yourdecisions and it also drives
(07:22):
your indecisions.
The clearer you are, the easieryour decisions are made.
So one of the things that Iinitially do with my clients is
we start talking about theirstrengths and their transferable
skills.
Okay, when I coach them ontheir strengths, it is a
(07:43):
difference between knowing whatthey are good at and what you
are known for and what you wantto do.
You might be an excellentproject or program manager, but
you may find yourself wanting todo something different.
Sure, you have those skills andyou're great at doing those
(08:05):
things, but if you want to dosomething different, where does
that take you?
The power of transferableskills needs to be, and must be,
recognized that in this jobmarket, this conversation is far
different.
Years ago, you could go into ajob interview or a networking
(08:25):
conversation and talk about howyou were a quick learner and how
you'd be able to skill up ortransfer your skills once you
got the necessary training andsupport.
And that doesn't work in thisjob market right now.
Companies and organizationswant to know you are ready to
hit the ground running on dayone, and here's how you are
(08:45):
going to leverage thistransferable skill into this new
role.
If you have never taken Gallup'sClifton StrengthsFinder
assessment, I invite you to dothat.
You yourself can go onto theirwebsite and for two different
price points, you can eitherunlock your top five or unlock
your top 34 skills and strengths, rather and it will give you a
(09:11):
ton of information and resourcesaround where your strengths are
.
One of the reasons why I loveGallup's CliftonStrengths
assessment is that, especiallyfor mid-career professionals,
they will say that leaning intoyour top five albeit your top 10
strengths out of the 34 theyrank you on that leaning into
(09:35):
those top strengths tend to helppeople be happier in their jobs
, add more value to theirorganizations, are more
motivated to continue to learnand grow in their positions, and
they are able to leverage thosestrengths into their current
and future positions.
See, I believe that atmid-career, do what you are
(09:59):
great at yes, we all have thingswe can be learning.
There are things I'm learningright now that are exciting and
motivating to me.
They're helping strengthen thatskill set I already have.
But doing what you are great atlisten very carefully here.
Doing what you are great at isnot doing what you're good at.
(10:21):
It is doing what you are greatat and not wanting to settle for
simply doing your job.
When you're great at doingsomething, the question I want
you to be asking yourself is howare those strengths of value to
any organization?
So if you're listening to metoday and you're feeling stuck,
(10:43):
undervalued, underutilized anduncertain about where your
career is going, this episode isexactly what you need to be
listening to, because making acareer pivot with purpose is
exactly what you need to bedoing.
First question what's yourintention?
Why is making this career pivotimportant to you?
(11:06):
What is happening in yourcareer right now that is making
you unhappy, unsatisfied, unfulfilled that you believe
making a career pivot is goingto change them for the better.
What is your timeline?
Right now, in this market, youshould expect somewhere between
(11:30):
three to six months tosuccessfully navigate a career
change and how your particularindustry is quickly filling
those positions.
But have a realistic timeline.
What's your vision for yourcareer?
In other words, making thiscareer pivot is one thing, but
(11:51):
what does it get you in the longterm?
What are your short andlong-term goals?
And if you're listening to metoday and you're like John, I
don't know that can be true, butI want to also offer you that's
a defense mechanism.
That is, you not wanting to dothe really hard work of digging
(12:13):
deeply into what is going tomake you a satisfied, fulfilled
and happy mid-careerprofessional?
And it's where I get to come inas your coach and truly help
you navigate those things.
Making a career pivot withpurpose is about identifying
those potential opportunitieswhere you have a viable and
(12:36):
realistic shot or chance atgetting that job, you will gain
experience that you're lookingfor.
It is about building yournetwork and building your
network to have a core group ofpeople who support you,
challenge you and champion yourefforts just as much as you do
(12:56):
for them.
When you think about navigatingthis career pivot, I want you
to understand that this is anopportunity to go from confusion
to clarity.
It is about standing at thatcareer crossroad and wondering
which direction are you gonna goin and when you decide to do it
(13:20):
with the most action, intention, confidence and confidence you
have ever done in your career.
It's about changing thenarrative when you're networking
or you're interviewing, to showup from that place of value and
service to look at that personin the interview to simply say I
(13:40):
hear where your problems are, here's how I'm going to help you
.
It is one of the biggesttransformations my clients get
and if you have a moment, pleasego take a look.
Look at my website, look at therecommendations that are on my
LinkedIn.
You will see story after storyfrom clients who have gotten
(14:01):
that transformation andnavigated toward whatever's
gonna be next, and I also wannatell you that I have some
clients who they're very, veryprivate about what they do and
that doesn't mean that theydidn't get results because they
didn't post a recommendation oranything like that.
Transformations are personal, transformations are special and
(14:28):
for me and for my clients, whatI know is that when you
successfully navigate thattransition, there is such a
difference in your career.
And if you've successfullynavigated a transition and
perhaps your organization hasgone through a reorganization, a
(14:48):
restructuring, a layoff, a riffif you didn't have a chance to
listen to last week's episode,by all means or two weeks ago,
rather by all means go back anddo that.
Those things sometimes happen.
But when you are clear about thevalue you bring, those kind of
circumstances that happen alongour career path or detours if
(15:09):
you will you quickly get off thehighway and get right back on
because you are so certain aboutwhat you bring and can do and
how you can help anyorganization you bring and can
do and how you can help anyorganization.
And this is one of the reasonswhy I built my career clarity
course.
Not everybody can afford tohire a coach privately.
(15:33):
Not everyone can have the time, effort and energy to work with
a coach one-on-one.
But the career clarity courseis there for you to go through
at your own pace, to go throughthose steps, to build your
mid-career GPS, and it's a greatway to start at a low threshold
(15:55):
, if you will.
The course right now is sellingfor $97.
And $97 to help you get thecareer clarity you need that
will help move your careerforward.
Imagine the transformation youget from that, from knowing that
where you are in your career isexactly where you're supposed
(16:18):
to be and where you are headedis going to elevate and make
your career that much better.
There was an article in Forbes acouple of weeks ago that
described this job market as astate of unease and I read that
and I paused and I thought thatis so accurate More than ever.
(16:43):
Between having to return to thework site five days a week,
having this fear, anxiety anddread and worry about whether or
not you are going to have a joball of the things that are
happening in the world and inour economy we have to
understand those trickle downinto our working relationships.
(17:05):
So it's not just the federalemployees that are going through
the tumult right now.
It is the contractors and thecompanies that work with federal
government and it's thosecorporations that might be
impacted by tariffs or economicsituations where people have to
take a step back and look atwhere their bottom line is, how
(17:27):
AI is changing the way we workdaily, and if your job can be
automated by an AI tool, myquestion to you, my friend, is
this what is the value you arebringing outside of that that
makes you indispensable to yourcompany or organization?
Because you have the careerclarity to know.
(17:48):
This is the value I get tobring and, please, being a great
person, being a people leader, being a wonderful communicator
and a team player those are allgreat things.
They are expected.
They are not quote-unquoteoutstanding or exceptional in
this job market.
That is hard for me to saybecause, as a heart-centered
(18:09):
leader and professional, that isso important to me in my core.
It is how I led when I had myteams.
That's all important.
That is expected.
You must be driving results.
Having the career clarity isknowing exactly where you can
drive those results and how thatimpacts your company or
(18:32):
organization.
So if you're struggling withyour career clarity right now, I
want to offer you these twoquestions I promised at the top
of the episode.
Here are the two coachingquestions I want to leave you
with in this episode.
Question one what are your mostimportant strengths that you
(18:59):
can leverage in your job search?
As you're looking at positionsand you're looking at job boards
and networking with yourcommunity, what are the most
important strengths you canleverage in your job search
right now?
Who needs someone like you?
Needs someone like you.
(19:30):
Question two those strengthswhy are they of value to a
future employer?
Why does your future employerneed your strengths right now?
If you can answer those twoquestions, what are your most
important strengths that you canleverage in your job search?
And to those strengths, why arethey of value to a future
employer right now?
If you can answer both of thosequestions with evidence and
(19:56):
confidence, you have the careerclarity you need to move forward
.
If you don't, there is anopportunity for you to do some
work and if I can help you inany way, by all means, please
reach out.
