Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey there, I bet
you're exhausted.
I bet you're exhausted from howdifficult your work is, and I
bet you're exhausted simply fromworking, and I'm not talking
about putting in long hours, though it certainly has
something to do with it.
I'm talking about dealing withthe stress, overwhelm and
(00:20):
anxiety of having to return tothe office five days a week.
Or you're dealing with a toxicboss or work environment, or
maybe you feel as if you can'tdo anything right at work and
are simply beyond stressed.
Check, please, you're done.
I get it, and this job marketcertainly isn't helping any.
(00:42):
That's why, in this episode,I'm sharing a few tips and
tricks with you that you can doright now to make your work life
a bit more manageable and bringa little more joy into what may
feel like the 2025 doldrums arenever going to go away.
Let's get started.
(01:20):
They love, or love the job theyhave, using my proven four-step
formula.
Before I dive in today's topic,I hope you will join me next
week as we celebrate episode 300.
Honestly, I can't believe itand I could not have achieved
(01:41):
this milestone without you, andI assure you it will be a
powerful conversation and topicand, plus, I will share with you
a few changes that are comingup to the podcast you will not
want to miss Now.
If you're listening to thisepisode on a lunch break while
you're doom scrolling onLinkedIn and, at the same time,
watching adorable puppy videoson Instagram, this episode is
for you.
Plus, if you're feeling reallystretched in your job right now,
(02:05):
or you're feeling reallystretched in your job right now
or you're feeling a bit ofdespair about where your job or
career is at, let's take a lookat things.
Work right now isunquestionably draining in 2025.
Look, I'm not saying that youdon't have moments where you
like the work you're doing andhopefully, you really enjoy
working with the people you doday in and day out, but there is
(02:28):
unquestionably an air ofheaviness and stress around our
work right now.
So if you've had to switch backfrom either being a fully
remote employee or a hybridemployee and now you're back at
the work site five days a week, you might be having some
difficulty adjusting to thatschedule and you might be having
(02:51):
to take some extra time dealingwith a commute and feeling like
how you just get back into theswing of things when you get
home and now you've got all thethings that you need to do at
home that you've been doing, butnow you're back.
All the things that you need todo at home that you've been
doing, but now you're back todealing with a commute.
You might be fearful that youmight not have a job in a few
(03:12):
weeks or a few months, whetherit's because of changes
happening within your industryor changes happening within your
organization.
Maybe your company is gettingacquired or bought out, or
they're going through some bigrestructuring and you're feeling
like you always have to proveyour value, and so what this
looks like is that you'rebreaking boundaries, and not in
(03:35):
a good way.
You're staying later thanexpected, you're saying yes more
often than you would like to,all for fear that if you were to
say no or you're a peer tosomeone who's quote-unquote, not
fully committed to theorganization, you might have to
suffer some retribution, and thelast thing you want to do is
(03:56):
make a mistake, even if thatmistake may unintentionally cost
you your job.
You might be dealing withmanagement issues, so let me ask
you where are your directreports at?
How well are they performingand doing their job, and how are
they managing all of the stressgoing on this year?
What are they doing that iseither helping or hurting your
(04:21):
team as well as your workingrelationship.
Come on, where's the drama?
Who's causing it?
Who's the one on your team thatcannot get out of the drama and
is always running around andtalking to everybody, either
stirring up stuff or wonderingwhat the heck is going to happen
?
And are you yourself creatingdrama because it just makes you
(04:45):
look busy?
Or you're trying to avoidhaving a conversation with
someone at work for fear thateither you don't want to have it
or you simply just don't havethe energy to do it right now.
So what do you hate about yourjob right now?
And I realize hate is not aword that I use lightly, it is
(05:07):
not a word I like at all, butI'm going to use it in this case
to really emphasize theseverity of where some of your
emotions may be at in this jobmarket right now.
What do you hate about your job?
I want you to take some timelater and I want you to write it
down or pause this episode.
I want you to own it.
(05:27):
I want you to embrace andrelease all of the shame that
you may be associating with why, right now, you hate your job?
Here's one of the things thatoften comes up in my work.
People will come to me andthey'll say look, I know I need
to be grateful that I have a job, but I really don't like it.
I know there's a lot of peopleout there that would love to
(05:50):
have a job right now and they'dlove to put up with all the
stress that I deal with, but Idon't really like it.
That is okay, because right now, the shoes that you're wearing,
those work shoes that you'rehaving to step into day in and
day out, are causing blisters onyour feet, they're causing you
pain in your arches and yousimply are not comfortable right
(06:14):
.
So now that you've owned this,or when you actually go through
and you own what exactly it isyou don't like about your job,
here's a little tip to make itbetter.
See if there is a way you canfind some humor in it.
Yeah, now, it may not besomething you outwardly share,
(06:35):
but it might be something yousay to yourself like good grief,
sheila, if she opens her mouthone more time in this meeting,
I'm going to lose it.
And no offense to anybodylistening named Sheila, it's
just the name that popped up inmy head, okay.
Or it's something like oh, thisone again, you can have an
internal dialogue that will helprestore your sanity, and as
(06:58):
long as you're not utteringthose things out verbally into
the air and in public, it mayjust be a little piece of sanity
that you need.
Look, we all have a work bestie, and sometimes that work bestie
can be exactly the thing thatwe need to help us manage our
stress and our anxiety and ourfrustrations at work.
(07:19):
So if you don't have a workbestie, I want to offer you get
one.
All right, let's take a look atthe current job market.
So here we are.
We're starting off in June andwe're hearing some interesting
numbers come out about jobs thatare being filled and the
unemployment rate and everything.
But here is the thing, and weknow that data can tell a very
(07:45):
different story.
So what I want to offer you isthat, when you're looking at
this current job market, figureout who's hiring, figure out the
industry and the job forecastthat is specifically related to
that industry, and startfiguring out how much time is it
really going to take you tofind a new job.
(08:08):
The research that I followtypically says that for a
mid-career professional, we arelooking somewhere in the
ballpark of five to seven months.
Now that time frame can be spedup based on how aggressive you
are, how robust your network isand how much they're willing to
(08:30):
advocate for you.
It could also take longer given.
Hey, you're like you know, summer's coming, I'm going to
take the time off.
I'll start looking in Septemberand all of a sudden now you are
telling yourself a story thatit's going to take you 10, 11,
12 months.
Be very careful of the storyyou tell.
You can set a goal for yourselfand do everything within your
(08:53):
power and command to see if youcan actually obtain it by doing
everything you want to do toachieve that.
But if you are telling yourself, eh, I think it's probably
going to take me a year to finda new job, my question to you is
how do you know that?
Show me the evidence, give methe receipts on where you are
(09:14):
seeing that it's going to takeyou a year, and we can have a
much different conversationaround that.
But I will challenge you thatif you were in a desperate
situation and you needed to findwork sooner rather than later,
your energy would dramaticallyshift.
Okay, you might be living in theapplication black hole, and
(09:38):
that application abyss is awful.
You apply for jobs online.
You never hear back.
You're wondering what else youhave to do, and so that can be
especially disconcerting, especially if that is the only
way you are trying to find a newjob right now.
You can tell yourself eh, I'mnot really good at networking or
(10:01):
I don't like going tonetworking events and things
like that.
That is not the only way youhave to network.
You could network one-on-one.
In fact, that's actually mypreferred way to network.
I prefer to have a one-on-oneconversation with somebody, and
in fact, I scheduled anetworking breakfast with
somebody in a few days becauseit's someone whom I haven't had
(10:23):
chance to connect with recentlyand we thought, ah, let's go
have breakfast.
There's a lot of differentthings you can do, but if you
are relying on AI and if you'remultitasking, come back to me
for a minute.
Put down the puppy video, it'scute.
Just put it on pause.
If you are playing this AI game, where you are using some AI
(10:46):
tool like ChatGPT to help youwrite your resume, write your
cover letter, prepare for yourinterview, I want to caution you
.
It may not be helping you.
Recruiters and hiring managersare getting more savvy as to
what a scripted, ai-generatedcover letter looks like or a
(11:09):
resume looks like.
And remember, the goal here inhaving a resume or an optimized
LinkedIn profile is to generateenough interest that they want
to talk to you.
So if you're not getting aninterview, there is likely
something going on either in howyou're applying for the
(11:30):
position or in how you are.
Well, now all bets are off, because now they're going to ask
you some questions and you haveto demonstrate your expertise,
your competence, your knowledgeto really showcase why you're
the best person for the job.
(11:52):
It's why last month I did amasterclass inside my mid-career
GPS membership community calledTips for Using Chat GPT to Help
you Prepare for your Next JobInterview, and in this
masterclass, which is about 64minutes, I used three different
prompts.
I showed everybody in thecommunity, I showed them the
(12:15):
prompt and I showed them theresponses that got generated,
and each prompt got deeper andmore specific.
And then, when I got to thefinal generated response and the
thing that I asked it was forwas to help me prepare some
interview questions, to help meincrease my confidence and my
(12:37):
clarity in the interview when Iwent ahead and did that, I broke
down the 10 things ChatGPTgenerated and I put my lens on
it to share with the people inmy community, whether or not I
thought, based on my experience, that was good advice or not.
(12:57):
And let me tell you there werea few things that surprised me,
what it generated and somethings I did not agree with.
Now, this mid-career membershipcommunity is a wonderful place
to be.
If you are looking for someadditional support and
information, you can find it bygoing to my website,
(13:18):
johnnerrellcom forward slashmembership.
But if you just want to get alittle taste, if you're really
curious about what thismasterclass is and how it could
help you, then I want you to goto my website, to johnnerrellcom
forward slash resources, andyou can purchase the masterclass
(13:39):
for $47, which is almost halfof the monthly membership cost
to come into the mid-career GPSmembership community and you can
see exactly what I'm talkingabout here.
But if you are sitting back andyou're thinking AI is going to
be a cheaper, less expensive, better way for you to do things,
caveat emptor, buyer beware, because it's not all it's
(14:04):
cracked up to be, given how.
What I like to say is you'refeeding the monster.
If you don't feed the monsterenough, the monster is not going
to give you exactly what it isthat you need, okay.
So if you're really stressedright now in your job search,
your work life in general, whatI want to offer you to do right
(14:25):
now is find what I call somemini recovery moments.
These mini recovery moments arethings that you can do daily or
weekly to simply put a littlemore energy in your tank.
Maybe you plan a day trip onthe weekend or you go to a movie
or you see a show or you go fora hike or something, but plan
(14:49):
something that you've gotsomething to look forward to,
because those are the thingsthat will fill you, they will
sustain you as you get back intothe stress of the week.
Full disclosure my husband hasfound an incredible love right
now in jigsaw puzzles and hesits at the dining room table at
(15:09):
night and he does these 1,000,1,500, 2,000-piece puzzles and
loves it because it lets himshut his brain off and just
think about I just got to findthe right pieces here to put
together.
It's given him so much joyright now and so, like every
(15:29):
week, we get some puzzledeliveries to the house.
He's like, oh, I got morepuzzles right.
Whatever, it is Okay, but theother thing he can do is start
finding ways to re-engage withyour network.
And I want to caution you righthere, because oftentimes, when I
say this a lot of times, peoplewill go oh I'm going to go find
(15:52):
this event and I'm going to dothis and I'm going to connect
with 10 people this month andblah, blah, blah, stop, just
stop.
Pick one person every month foryou to reconnect with.
Do not over complicate this.
Your life and your work life isstressful enough.
You do not need to be adding toit.
But if you re-engaged with oneperson each month, you would
(16:18):
have cultivated 12 relationshipsacross the course of a year and
reconnected with people andperhaps learned something about
them, learned a way they couldhelp you or you could help them
and build your networkingstrategy that way.
Just don't make it creepy right.
Be authentic, be genuine, betransparent about why you want
(16:44):
to connect.
Hey, I'm not really sure wherethis may go, but we haven't
chatted in a while.
It'd be great to reconnect.
I want to offer you this is anopportunity right now, amidst
all the stress, to focus onthings you can do consistently,
because small steps rather thanbig leaps will give you the most
progress.
(17:04):
And, lastly, don't be the onewho's overwhelming you.
Right, I keep what I call themost obnoxious to-do list and I
clean it out every month becauseI'm not going to be the one
that's overwhelming me andputting extra stress on my life.
That was one of my goals forthis year.
(17:25):
So think about ways you canfill your energetic tank and
what that absolutely looks likefor you.
In conclusion, the work worldright now is strange.
It is bizarre.
It is weird, and you are notalone.
There is an undeniable level ofstress out there right now, and
(17:50):
more and more each and everyweek.
I'm hearing from people, I'mhearing from you, who are saying
I don't know what to do next.
I'm not having any results.
This has taken me much longerthan I thought.
I've always been able to find ajob easily enough, and now, all
of a sudden, it's difficult.
So it's not you, it is thecircumstance of this job market,
(18:10):
and there are ways to navigatethrough it.
So here's the thing If thisepisode today was helpful for
you, would you please do me afavor and just copy the link to
this episode and text it to afriend of yours who you think

truly appreciate that.
