SPEAKER_01 (00:43):
Welcome back to the Mid-Career Makeover Show.
I'm your host, Lavon James, andtoday we're tackling a topic
that is absolutely critical ifyou're in the middle of your
career.
Salary negotiation.
Now I know that word can makesome people nervous.
Salary negotiation.
Just hearing it makes your palmssweat, right?

(01:07):
But here's the thing negotiatingyour salary is not just about
money, it's about respect.
It's about recognition.
And it's about aligning yourpaycheck with the value you
bring to the table.
So in this episode, we're goingto talk about salary negotiation
secrets that actually work.

(01:28):
And when I say actually work, Imean strategies you can take
into your next conversation withconfidence.
But first, let's be honest aboutwhy so many mid-career
professionals struggle when itcomes to asking for more.
Too often we pay what I call theloyalty tax.
You've been loyal to a companyfor 10 or 15 years, and instead

(01:49):
of being rewarded, you're stuckwith the standard 2 or 3% raise.
Meanwhile, new hires are comingin making 15% more than you.
Another big reason is fear.
At this stage of your life, you've got more
responsibilities.
Maybe you've got a mortgage, kids in school, aging parents.
It feels risky to rock the boat.

(02:11):
Then there are the outdatedscripts running in our heads.
Maybe early in your careersomeone told you, just be
grateful you have a job.
And that voice stuck with you.
But gratitude doesn't pay thebills.
And let's not forget impostersyndrome.
Even after 10 or 20 years ofdelivering results, some part of

(02:32):
you whispers, do I reallydeserve more?
What if they say no?
Here's the truth.
Companies expect you tonegotiate.
If you don't, you're leavingboth money and opportunity on
the table.

Before we even talk tactics, let's start with mindset.
Salary negotiation is less aboutthe words you say and more about
the belief behind them.
Think about it.
A company doesn't hire you as afavor, they hire you because you

(04:50):
help them make money, savemoney, or save time.
That's it.
Your salary is simply theexchange rate for the value you
deliver.
So here's the mantra I want youto hold on to.
I'm not asking for a favor.
I'm aligning my compensationwith my contribution.
Say it out loud, write it down, put it on your bathroom mirror

(05:13):
if you need to.
Because if you don't believe it,no strategy in the world will
work.
All right, so let's getpractical.
The secret to any successfulnegotiation is preparation.
80% of the work happens beforeyou ever step into the room.
First, know your market value.
Don't guess.
Use sites like Glassdoor,Payscale, or Salary.com.

(05:37):
But more importantly, talk topeople.
Ask colleagues in your industrywhat's typical.
Second, know yournon-negotiables.
Salary is only one part of thepackage.
What about flexibility, vacationdays, professional development
stipends, or stock options?
Sometimes those things are worthmore than raw cash.

(05:58):
And third, know your wins.
You need a brag sheet.
Quantify your impact.
Did you save your company$2million with process
improvements?
Did you lead a team thatdelivered a product three months
early?
Did you increase customerretention by 15%?
Numbers don't lie.
And they make your valueundeniable.

(06:20):
Now, how do you actually say itwhen the moment comes?
Here's the framework I teach myclients.
Start with appreciation.
I'm really excited about thisopportunity, and I believe I can
make a big impact on your team.
Then present data, not emotion, you could say something like
this.
Based on market research and thevalue I've consistently

(06:43):
delivered, such as leading a$5million portfolio of projects
successfully, I believe a fairrange for this role is between
120 and 130,000.
And then pause.
Silence is powerful.
Don't rush to fill the space.

(07:04):
Finally close collaboratively.
How can we work together to makethis happen?
Notice what's missing?
Begging, apologizing,overexplaining.
You don't need them.
Now, of course, you're going toget pushback, and that's okay.
Let's talk about the most commonones.
If they say that's outside ourbudget, you can respond, I

(07:28):
understand budgets are tight.
But given the market rate andthe scope of responsibility,
what flexibility do you have tobring this closer in line?
If they say this is the standardoffer, you can respond, I
appreciate that.
From my research and what I knowabout the role, I was expecting
something closer to X.

(07:49):
How can we bridge the gap?
And if they say, we can revisitthis later, you can respond, I
understand.
Can we put a timeline inwriting?
Say a six-month review tied toperformance metrics.
Remember, negotiation is adance.
Stay calm, stay collaborative.

unknown (08:10):
This is your way through.

SPEAKER_01 (08:24):
When you walk into that negotiation room, you're
not just another employee.
You are a person with decades ofskills, of wisdom, of results
that cannot be duplicated.

But here's the problem (08:37):
too many of you are living below your
worth.
You're walking into theseconversations timid, like you're
asking for scraps from thetable.
No, stop that.
You are not at the table to beg.
You are at the table because youbelong there.

(08:58):
Your salary negotiation is notjust about money.
It's about identity.
It's about saying, I will nolonger discount myself.
I will no longer shrink soothers feel comfortable.
I will no longer settle for lesswhen I know I am worth more.
You've got to stand tall, lookthem in the eye, and say, This

(09:21):
is who I am.
This is the value I bring.
And this is what I deserve.
Because if you don't fight foryour value, who will?
So don't walk into that roomwith fear.
Walk in with fire.
Walk in with faith.
Walk in with a conviction thatyou are not just negotiating
dollars, you are negotiatingyour destiny.

And remember this (09:43):
you have greatness within you.
You deserve to be compensatedfor it.
Let me give you two quickstories.
Vanessa was a marketing managerwho'd been at her company for 12
years, making$85,000.
She was offered a new role at$92,000.
She almost said yes on the spot.
But after some preparation, wediscovered her market rate was

(10:06):
between$110 and$120,000.
She went back, confidently laidout her impact, millions in
revenue campaigns, and asked for$115.
The company came back at$112,000.
That's a$20,000 bump she wouldhave left on the table if she

(10:26):
hadn't negotiated.
Marcus was an IT director movingto a new city.
He got an offer of$140,000.
Instead of countering, he almostaccepted because he felt
grateful.
But after reviewing his resumeof leading$10 million projects,
he countered at 160.

(10:49):
They met him at$155,000.
That's$15,000 a year, or$150,000over 10 years.
One conversation changed hisfinancial trajectory.
These aren't unicorns.
These are normal people whodecided to believe in their
worth.
