SPEAKER_00 (03:49):
Welcome back to the Mid-Career Makeover Show.
Grab your coffee, pull up yournotes app, and let's get to it.
Power move number one reclaimyour narrative.
This is about getting your storystraight, not just for others,
but for yourself.
Let's talk theory.
Humans think in stories.
Psychologists call it narrativeidentity, the idea that how you

(04:10):
tell your life story shapes howyou live it.
But too often, mid-careerprofessionals start telling
stale stories.
I've always worked inoperations.
I'm just not a tech person.
I don't know if I'm leadershipmaterial.
These scripts get baked intoresumes, LinkedIn profiles,
interviews, and eventuallybelief systems.
For example, I had a client whostarted every interview by

(04:31):
saying, I've been in the samerole for 12 years.
Guess what that told employers?
I'm stagnant.
We flipped it.
Now she says, over the past 12years, I've become the go-to
expert for solving operationalbottlenecks, improving team
productivity, and launchingcost-saving systems that save my
company$500,000.
Same experience.

(04:51):
Totally different story.

Here's what I want you to do: reread your resume and LinkedIn (04:53):
undefined
profile as if you're anoutsider.
Ask, what's the dominantnarrative here?
Is it passive or powerful?
Supportive or stale?
Then rewrite it with these threeprompts.
What am I known for?
What problem do I consistentlysolve?
What's the thread that connectsall my roles?

(05:13):
You are not just your pasttitles.
You are the value you bring, andthat story starts with you.
Here's power move number two.
Audit your circle.
We've all heard that quote.
You're the average of the fivepeople you spend the most time
with.
But let's take it further, because in mid-career, your
circle can either keep you stuckor help you soar.

(05:34):
Let's talk some more theory.
Social psychologists call thissocial contagion.
Your beliefs, ambitions, andeven income levels are shaped by
your social environment.
So let me ask you, are yourconversations filled with what's
possible?
Or why bother?
Are your peers cheering yourgrowth or just surviving?
For instance, one of my clientswas doing everything right

(05:57):
applying, networking, learning.
But her inner circle keptsaying, just be happy you have a
job.
So she stayed small.
Once she joined a mastermindgroup of other ambitious
professionals, her confidencesoared.
She got a mentor and sheactually made a successful
career pivot.

(06:17):
Here's something I want you todo.
Take inventory.
Write down the five people youtalk to the most about your
career.
Then ask, are they ahead of you?
Do they challenge you to grow?
Would you trade careers withthem?
If not, it's time to expand yourcircle.
Join an industry Slack group.
Follow three thought leaders andengage in their comments.

(06:40):
Book a coffee chat with someonein your dream role.
Don't just network for jobs, network for mindset.
Power move number three, position yourself as a thought
leader.
Now I know what some of you arethinking.
Levon, I'm not trying to befamous, but let me be clear.
Thought leadership isn't aboutbeing loud, it's about being

(07:01):
clear.
It's about owning your space assomeone with insight, not just
experience.
Theory check.
Positioning theory says the waypeople see you is shaped by how
you show up in conversations.
Are you seen as the go-toexpert?
Or just someone who hasexperience?
For example, another client ofmine had 20 years in healthcare

(07:21):
operations, but zero onlinepresence.
We started small, one LinkedInpost, a week sharing insights, a
comment on industry trends.
Six months later, she hadLinkedIn connections to take her
to the next level.
Take action, start showing up,start saying something.
You don't have to be everywhere.
You just have to be consistentsomewhere.
Ask yourself, what do I want tobe known for?

(07:44):
What's one myth in my industry Iwant to challenge?
What advice do I wish someonegave me 10 years ago?
You want to be a thought leader?
Start small.
Post once a week on LinkedIn.
Create a free resource.
Checklist, guide, post.
Speak at a virtual event orindustry meetup.
When people can see your brainat work, they start to see your

(08:06):
value.
Power move number four, upskillwith purpose.

(08:26):
I see it all the time.
People collecting certificationslike trading cards.

But here's the deal (08:30):
more learning isn't always more
earning.
In career development, there'ssomething called just-in-time
learning.
It's the idea that the best timeto learn a new skill is when it
directly supports your nextstep, not just someday.
For example, I worked with aclient who wanted to pivot into
project management.
She was about to sign up for a$4,000 course until we

(08:51):
discovered she already hadexperience managing timelines,
budgets, and stakeholders.
All she needed was to learnagile methodology and tighten
her storytelling.
She took one low-cost class, updated her resume, and landed
the job.
Ask yourself, what's the role Iwant next?
What's one skill or tool thatwould make me undeniable?

(09:12):
Then choose learning that'saligned, not random.
Here are some practicalrecommendations to upskill.
Use LinkedIn Learning orCoursera for bite-sized targeted
lessons.
Apply what you learnimmediately, build a project,
volunteer, or post about it.
Don't just get the knowledge.
Show that you're using it.
Power move number five, and theone that scares most people the

(09:35):
most.
Make the ask.
You've done the work, you've gotthe receipts.
But if you're waiting forsomeone to notice and reward
you, you could be waitingforever.
Behavioral economics calls thisthe spotlight effect.
We think people are noticing usmore than they are.
Reality?
Most decision makers are toobusy to connect the dots.

(09:55):
You have to draw the line forthem.
For example, a client of minehad been leading major
initiatives at her job for overa year, but she wasn't getting
promoted.
Why?
She hadn't asked.
She assumed they'd notice.
We role-played the conversation.
She came in with results, aclear ask, and confidence.

Think about what you want (10:15):
a raise, a promotion, a pivot?
Then ask, who do I need to havea conversation with?
What proof can I share?
What's my ideal outcome?
Use the because thereforeframework.
Because I've led XYZ, thereforeI believe I'm ready for role or
salary or project.

(10:35):
Practice the ask with a mentoror coach.
Do it scared, but do it anyway.
You're not being pushy, you'rebeing proactive.

SPEAKER_02 (10:44):

SPEAKER_00 (11:16):
Welcome back to the Mid Career Makeover Show.
All right, let's talk about amove nobody ever brings up, but
it's a silent career killer.
Power move number six.
Break the autopilot habit.
You know what I mean.
You show up, log in, do yourjob, and somewhere along the
way, you stopped thinking onpurpose.

(11:36):
You stopped questioning,imagining, initiating.
In neuroscience, there's a termcalled cognitive economy.
Your brain automates patterns toconserve energy.
It's survival, but in yourcareer, it can look like
stagnation.
You stop challengingassumptions, you settle for the
same way, you lose the sparkthat once made you you.

(12:00):
A client of mine had beenworking in the same role for
eight years.
She wasn't unhappy, but shewasn't energized either.
I asked her, When was the lasttime you proposed something
bold?
Gave feedback that made yousweat, took a risk inside your
current role?
She couldn't remember, so wecrafted a 30-day innovation
challenge.
Every week she had to propose anidea, try a new workflow, ask a

(12:24):
big what if question.
She came alive again, and guesswhat?
Her boss noticed.
You should audit yourday-to-day.
What have you been doing onrepeat without questioning?
Then ask, what's a process Icould improve?
What's something I could learnfrom another department?
What's a bold idea I've beensitting on?
I recommend.

(12:44):
Setting a recurring calendarreminder titled Break the
Pattern.
Schedule one curiosityconversation a week with someone
outside your team.
Commit to one risk a week, smallor big, but new.
Because you can't innovate ifyou're sedated by routine.
And now for our final powermove, and it might be my
favorite.
Power move number seven.

(13:05):
Lead before you're given thetitle.
If you're waiting for someone toofficially promote you before
you step up, let me lovingly sayyou're doing it backwards.
Theory time.
Leadership isn't a title, it's abehavior.
In leadership studies, there'ssomething called informal
leadership.
It's influence withoutauthority.
And it's often what gets peoplenoticed for authority.

(13:27):
Example, I had a client who keptgetting passed over for
management roles.
Why?
Because she was doing greatwork, but she wasn't leading.
She started mentoring new hires, volunteered to lead a team
project, started runningmeetings with clarity and
intention.
Guess what happened?
She didn't apply for her nextpromotion.
It was offered to her.

(13:47):
Stop asking, how can I getpromoted?
Start asking, how can I leadright where I am?
Look for gaps, then fill them.
Look for chaos, then bringclarity, look for disengagement,
then be the spark.
Because people who act likeleaders get seen as leaders.

SPEAKER_03 (14:07):
This is your way through.

SPEAKER_00 (14:21):
Welcome back to the Mid-Career Makeover Show.
So let's run it back.

Number one, reclaim thenarrative.
Number two, audit your circle.
Number three, position yourselfas a thought leader.
Number four, upskill withpurpose.

(14:43):
Number five, make the ask.
Number six, break the autopilothabit.
And number seven, lead beforeyou're given the title.
Let this episode be your wake-upcall, your blueprint, your
challenge.
You're not behind.
You're not too late.
You're just one bold move awayfrom everything that's been

waiting for you.
