challenge, where a lot of us, we
just sort of continually clingto the person who we think we
are.
But what about if we stoppedclinging to this idea of who
we've always been?
What if identity wasn'tsomething fixed for life which
realistically it's not, but justa project, you know, for some
(00:47):
people to help you look at it,just a project that got you kind
of to revisit it every 90 days, right?
So the thing is, most of usdon't resist change because
we're lazy or unmotivated.
We resist it because we're tooloyal to a version of ourselves
that really no longer fits.
We keep showing up as someonewho's basically already left the
building.
(01:08):
But that's why I kind of cameup with this idea I've been
thinking about, called the90-Day Identity Loop.
It's just a way to break thecycle and step into a more
intentional version of ourselves, one season at a time, and
that's what we're going to talkabout.
(01:48):
So so what is this 90-dayidentity loop?
Well, to be honest with you,the idea is really influenced by
thinkers like james clear andbenjamin hardy, who they've
really explored how identityshapes behavior and vice versa,
and I've kind of taken thoseinsights and distilled them to
more of a seasonal structure.
Like every 90 days, youconstantly reinvent who you are.
So basically, that is corebelief, you know.
(02:11):
What I know is that you are notyour past, and this is one of
the biggest challenges withpeople they think they're their
past.
You are not.
You are a pattern of your past, right?
So if you can shift yourpattern, you can shift your
identity.
So instead of identifyingyourself by who you've always
been, you begin to live from whoyou are becoming.
(02:31):
You name that version ofyourself, you give it values,
you anchor it in some smalldaily behaviors and then you
observe are you truly being thisversion of yourself or are you
just performing it?
So the thing is, you might say, well, why 90 days?
Well, 90 days just always seemsto be the sweet spot, right?
It's long enough to createmeaningful change, it's short
enough to maintain focus andmomentum, and just the right
(02:52):
length to keep you from driftinginto autopilot.
So we already think in 90 daycycles anyway, in other areas of
our lives, if you think aboutit, like fitness or programs, or
business quarters or academicterms.
So why not just apply the samestructure to personal identity?
Now, this isn for reinventionsake, okay, it's about seasonal
(03:13):
living.
It's asking about every fewmonths who am I now?
Who am I becoming?
And hopefully it is becomingthe person that you want to
become, maybe a little bit moreoutgoing, maybe a little bit
more focused, a little moregoal-oriented, whatever it is.
But again, by giving you thiswindow to work within, it gives
you sort of license to be thatway, without feeling like, well,
I'm going to try to change whoI am today, but, oh my God, it
(03:34):
seems insurmountable.
So you're just giving yourselfhey, I'm going to work within
this window for 90 days, right?
So to really begin the loop, youjust got to start by naming.
You know what is your next self?
Maybe it's something bold, something evocative, personal.
Maybe it's I'm the calmarchitect, or the focused
(03:56):
builder, or, you know, the boldconnector.
This name becomes sort of asymbol.
It's a container for your newdirection, you know.
Next, define these guidingbeliefs, statements that reflect
how this identity thinks andacts and I don't know, relates
to the world.
Examples like I speak withclarity or I act before, I
hesitate, I rest without guilt,I don't know what it's going to
be, but you have to define thatBecause ultimately, there's
(04:16):
somebody you're trying to become.
Like I was talking about mypodcast.
I'm not saying that you youknow.
I guess what I should say is mycore audience tends to be
people who are doing okay, justwant to do a little bit better.
So again here, when you'regoing through this it's just
figuring out you know thatthere's something you'd want to
be doing a little bit better.
You know there's a version ofyou that you'd like to kind of
(04:37):
put out there to the world, andthat's what I'm talking about.
That's what this is kind ofabout, right, and once you
choose, like, how you want todefine yourself here, then
choose that one embodied habitthat's going to allow you to do
that.
Something simple and repeatable.
What brings your identity tolife?
It could be journaling, walking10,000 steps, connecting with
one person daily.
Maybe you're in sales, maybeyou just want to get out in the
(04:58):
world more.
You want to get out from behindthe computer.
You want to become more social, whatever, or just speaking your
mind once a day.
Maybe you're somebody whowishes they were more outspoken
about things, but you kind ofjust hide back in the shadows.
Well, you know what?
For these next 90 days, you'regoing to be that person, because
what happens is, eventually youdo become that person.
It doesn't become the actanymore and you'll be able to
shift and I would track thatshift if I was you Each week.
(05:21):
Reflect are you becoming thisversion of yourself or are you
just pretending to?
Are the beliefs and behaviorsaligning with the identity you
named?
Because the thing is, look, thereal kicker here is when you do
this.
You don't have to get itperfect, you just have to get
intentional about it, becauseagain, your identity isn't found
(05:42):
right, and I think that's a lotof people do.
They hold on to that.
They just hold on to like well, this is who I am.
Your identity is built and thereal thing is it's allowed to
change.
We're not trees, we're notstatues, we're not, you know,
story-driven creatures who getto choose the role we play and
remain there.
So, instead of dragging thisold version of yourself that you
(06:04):
might be unhappy with into yourfuture, why not give your
future a name of the person youwant to become and be that?
The thing is, if you giveyourself permission to become
someone new for just 90 days, you know who might that be, who
might you become and just howmight that change your life or
just improve it a little bit Ifyou just stop really reporting
(06:29):
to that outdated version of youthat no longer serves you.
After all, everyone has just alittle bit of room for
improvement.
So by putting yourself in thislittle window of 90 days, you
give yourself license to say, okay, I'm going to try this, but
there is an end date, right?
So it's not like I'm committinglifelong term to this.
(06:49):
There's an end date.
But I think what's going tohappen is like anything once you
start that change, it becomeseasier and easier and that
change just becomes who you are,all right.
So if you're looking to get alittle bit better into something
you want to work on, try thatthe 90 day loop there.
90 day identity loop.
All right, everybody, Iappreciate your time.
