(00:00):
Hello, wonderful people. This is Joanna from Mindful Counseling,
also known as GDS Counseling.
Today's topic, as I sit here trying to find ways to even communicate this,
is the topic of what drives you, what pushes you forward, and what moves you
forward on a day-to-day basis,

(00:21):
and how do you find that drive to continue to move forward.
Now, a lot of it can be associated with anxieties and depression,
maybe not having much of a drive because of some depressive symptoms that might
come up or not having enough great experiences or people around us.

(00:43):
So I figured with some of the conversations that I have a tendency to carry
and to hear is that people,
I think, are driven by some form of an internal drive, motivation, the determination.
And I think most of us, if not all of us, have it.

(01:04):
Maybe some of us just can't find it. So I'm wondering, as you sit here listening
to this, ask yourself the question of what drives you.
Is it your job? Is it something about your job that you enjoy?
Are you happy with your job? Is it exercise?

(01:24):
Is it vacations? Is it daily routines or maybe certain individuals in your life
that you're just excited to see?
Maybe it's something to learn, something that you want to educate yourself on.
Maybe it's a good day. Maybe it's a sunny day.
Maybe it's the hair day or a good outfit.

(01:45):
So think about it as you listen to this. And as you guys know,
my podcasts are not necessarily extremely long, but they're,
I hope so, straight to the point.
And I think by me expressing this today, it allows you, all of us, to have this curiosity.
So that way you can be a little bit more mindful about yourself,

(02:09):
a little bit more aware of what's happening in your life.
Drive and if you don't have a drive on a day-to-day basis is that okay right is it okay that you.
May not necessarily look forward to certain things because
you're tired or you're not feeling well or because you're exhausted or
you've done too many things or maybe the expectations of other people so this

(02:32):
can go into many different directions with what I'm saying but I think the primary
focus is to focus on the drive and what pushes you forward, what motivates you.
Do you ever think about the time where you felt most motivated,
more driven to do things? And maybe not as much today.

(02:53):
Or the opposite, maybe you were not as driven for so many years and only in
the recent years or in the recent year, month or day,
you have realized that you have this passion for something, this drive,
this internal maybe hunt for something.

(03:14):
And what does that even mean, right? Is it something that drives us because we want?
Or maybe it's something that our parents did, maybe? Were they driven individuals?
Were they passionate about things? Or maybe not, maybe the opposite.
And you have learned to do the opposite, right?

(03:35):
Maybe there's more opportunities today than what your parents may have had.
Less opportunities or finances or income, technology, right?
All the other instant gratifications that exist today versus back in the day, years ago.
I can tell you for my own motivations and my own drives is my job.

(04:01):
And I don't know how many people can say they love their job.
But I can honestly say for many years now that I enjoy my job.
It drives me. There are certain moments where, yeah, it may be difficult or
some of the things that I may not necessarily like to do, which is the paperwork.
But I'm okay with that because either way, it's not as prevalent as it is what I do most of the time.

(04:30):
And that is communicate, listen, observe, analyze, help.
So I do, my motivation is my job. And I am being mindful and aware that I have
to know how to manage my job, right?
So that way it has a life and work balance.

(04:51):
That my drive to do work does not take me away from home 24-7.
I used to work in a hospital and I loved it. How many can say that?
Why? Because I had constant anxiety.
Not chaos, but something different was happening all the time.
And I like that. I know that about myself.

(05:12):
So even though my drive might beat my job,
I also know I have to find ways to balance it, that I can find a drive to be
home, to be motivated at home, to maybe do something different, right?
To shift the focus, shift the energy from work.
As a therapist, I don't want to be a therapist 24-7.

(05:35):
I always, maybe in the past it may have been different, but maybe with experiences
too, is I leave work at work and my home is my home.
Some people might think otherwise, but that's the way I see it.
This is my own awareness. This is my own views and experiences.

(05:55):
So as I say this, I don't know how many of you can ask yourself the question,
I love, do you love your job?
And if so, what do you love about your job? what drives you and what are maybe
some of the things that you might not necessarily like or the opposite maybe
you like all of it right job is just an example maybe it is the outdoors,

(06:19):
they need to be outdoors on a daily basis whether it rains whether it snows
whatever the temperatures are, maybe that's your drive, motivation, right?
If we think about it, the more enjoyable things are for us, the better we may feel, right?
When we look forward to things, the better we feel.

(06:40):
Now, I also say this with the ability to be aware whether the ability to be
determined, the drive to do things takes us away from other things,
making sure that we don't avoid certain
things by doing things all the time because we seek those pleasures, right? So.
Motivation, determination, in a lot of ways, can be a way to look at success,

(07:05):
a way to feel good, a way to separate,
but at the same time, holding on the balance that maybe those things are difficult
to keep 24-7 because the reality is there's other things in life. There's people in life.
You'll encounter certain things that

(07:25):
may not may not be necessarily always in your favor right
whether it's being stuck in traffic that can sort of separate you from that
motivation or not maybe you might dismiss it and not really look at it as much
some people look at it in a more negative way right so it really kind of depends
how we look at things maybe we're late to an appointment and we're stuck in

(07:47):
traffic. I could see that.
So there's things that can impact us when it comes to our drives,
our motivation, our determination.
What is it that drives you today? And do you think that when you wake up tomorrow,
you might have a different drive?
Maybe it is to do something different. Maybe it is to finally go for a walk, right?

(08:13):
Or to network.
Or to put yourself in a healthy, and I quote, healthy, uncomfortable situation.
Things that you may have not done before. Like I said, network.
Maybe you're somebody that always struggled with communicating with people or socializing.
Maybe for a day you just want to feel motivated and determined to push yourself to say hi to a stranger.

(08:40):
Again, being mindful with that.
We can always find motivations, right? And maybe that takes us into developing patterns and habits.
You know, certain individuals, some of us struggle with being determined and motivated.
And why is that? Is it because we've had so many fails?

(09:03):
Not many successes? Maybe things didn't necessarily work that much in our favor?
What about those situations? Yes.
So how can we find motivation or determination or that drive if we're always knocked down?
I call it maybe being unlucky, right? Or being in a shitty, pardon, situation.

(09:28):
However, there's always ways, and I may not have many examples for you,
but there's always ways to find something different to look forward to.
Sometimes maybe that has to do with the people around us and maybe needing to isolate from them.
And I don't mean it in a negative way. I mean it to form boundaries,

(09:48):
right? Where we can still have them, but maybe in a distance.
Maybe in some ways we have to change our jobs, look for a different career because
we're always unhappy in the present.
So explore the things that maybe don't push you towards a drawn motivation or
don't situations where you feel like you're not driven by things and explore

(10:11):
maybe the part of what is it that you would like to be driven by?
What would you like to do? And I know a lot of it is based on chances, right?
And taking that leap or doing something anew, which for most of us is very scary,
but it doesn't have to, right? Because that's the part of that anxiety.
So as I close today's podcast on mindful counseling is sit down with it.

(10:41):
Maybe you already have given yourself enough of answers just by listening and thinking, right?
Giving yourself some time to explore and get to know yourself,
right? And some of your own thoughts.
And if you have to say them out loud, say them out loud.
You'll be surprised how different certain things sound when they are just inside
our head versus when they're actually spoken out loud.

(11:05):
So until next time, I hope you all have a wonderful, wonderful day and night ahead. Be well.
