Speaker 1 (00:00):
focus now to settle for less.
It's all in your head how youthink you manifest.
So get ready to rise, becausewe about to be the best.
Gotta switch it up.
Gotta break the old habits, getyour mind right, turn your
dreams into habits.
No negative vibes, onlypositive thoughts.
What is up, guys?
Welcome to another episode ofthe mindset cafe podcast.

(00:21):
It's your boy, devin Gonzalez, and I just want to say thank you
guys so much for all thesupport and you guys continue to
engage in and listen and leavethe reviews.
I really appreciate it.
I know there's been a lot ofepisodes with guests on recently
and I wanted to switch it up alittle bit.
So there'll still be guestepisodes, but I want to start,

(00:44):
you know, throwing in you know, some just solo episodes just to
talk about topics with mindset, talk about some topics with
fitness and so forth, but reallyjust to give you guys you know,
some tools and some strategiesand some things that can help,
instead of just listening topeople's stories.
I know I mean I've gained somuch from listening to people's
stories.

(01:05):
I know I mean I've gained somuch from listening to people's
stories, but at the same time, sometimes it's nice just to get
you know, a tool or a strategy.
So that's what you know we'regoing to start today off with is
, you know, a little phrase, alittle mindset shift to
essentially kind of reprogramyourself into doing the things
that you need to do.

(01:25):
Right, and it's a forward, youknow phrase that really shifts
the control from feeling, fromyour feelings, to you know,
actions.
Right, it's just that cognitivespeed bridge per se that lets
you acknowledge your feelingsbut then still take action.
Right, you're not denying thefear, you're not denying the
anxiety, you're not denying thetiredness, but you are denying

(01:50):
the fact that not, actually, Iwon't say you're denying, I will
say that you're acknowledgingit, but you're not just
accepting it.
And that phrase is I do itanyways.
Right, and that phrase is I doit anyways.

(02:14):
The phrase and everythingreally comes from I was thinking
about how I want to start offthese solo episodes and I just
had.
So we, me and my wife just hadour second child and people were
talking about how are you goingto run the gym and do the
podcast and you know franchiseand this and that, and they're
gonna like you have.
So you're gonna, you knowyou're gonna be tired, right,
it's like I won't I.
You know, I, yeah, I might betired, but I do it anyways.

(02:35):
Right, and that's the realshift, that I don't.
I, I thought it was common sense, but I guess, again, one of my,
my sayings is that common senseis only common to the person
that knows it.
Right, I'll say that again, common sense is only common to
the person that knows it.
And for me, regardless of how Ifeel tired you know stressed if

(02:58):
I know I need to get somethingdone, I just do it.
I don't want to wait and put itoff, because now that task is
going to feel a little moreanxious to get completed versus
just getting it done.
For example, you get home, you're like man, I got to take
out the trash.
Most people sit on the couchlike I need to decompress first

(03:18):
and then I'll take out the trash.
It's like just take it out realquick and then you can
decompress.
Just get the things that youneed to do done first and then
you have all the time to relax.
Right, you're still drainedafter your work, right?
People will make the excusewell, I'm too tired to go to the
gym.
Look, do it anyways.

(03:40):
That's what separates people.
Right?
You're nervous to give a salespitch?
Right, just do it anyways.
Dial into that prospect listand do it anyways.
You're anxious to apologize tosomeone?
Right, it's easy to just sendthe text that says can we talk?
Right, just do it anyways.

(04:00):
Right, your feelings are justthat.
They're your feelings.
Right, your feelings are justthat, they're your feelings.
Right, your feelings aren'tgoing to get you the outcome
that you want.
Your actions are going to getyou the outcomes that you want.
So remember that little phraseas you're going through your day
and you're anxious aboutsomething, you're trying to put

(04:21):
something off right?
There's a book I read calledEat the Frog, which pretty much
says that you do the biggesttask of the of your day first.
Right, most people want to dolittle tasks in, in, get little
wins under the belt and be likeI did so much today.
It's like, but you didn't doanything that moved the needle
forward, right, you didn't doanything that for you that was
going to actually progress yourfitness journey, your life, your

(04:45):
relationship, your business.
It's like you put people, putoff the task that they need to
do until the end of the day andthen, nine times out of 10, you
don't end up completing itbecause you're like man, I'm now
like, even today, at the end ofthe day, I got to go, you know,
grab my daughter from preschool.
Right, I put the tasks off thatare most important to the end of

(05:05):
the day.
Well, I have to get my daughterfrom preschool at a certain
time.
Like there isn't.
There's no exception on that.
So if I don't complete the taskI need to do now, I have to
wait to do it tomorrow.
And then what happens tomorrow?
I start off with little tasksand you know, it's just that
snowball effect.
Right Now, all of a sudden, youget another big task.
So, just like the book, eat thefrog.

(05:25):
It's like I.
I truly believe it might nothave to be the first task of the
day, but it should be one ofthe first tasks of the day.
Is your biggest task?
What's going to move the needleforward?
Work on that, get that out ofthe way, and then you can do all
the minuscule, the small stuffafter the fact.
Right, we just started thechallenge again at a strive 11,.
Right, and one of the big tasksessentially in someone's in the,

(05:47):
in the, in the challenge, isplanning your meals.
Right, yeah, we have thesoftware that automatically
plans the meals for you, but youhave to go in and make sure
that you're actually going toeat those meals, right, cause
you have the option of changingmeals and all that stuff.
But you, but you plan yourmeals for the week.
Now the next task is to printout the grocery list and go buy

(06:09):
the stuff and then cook thestuff, because planning the
meals is quick, it's easy.
Yeah, I plan my meals Awesome, gold star but you didn't go buy
your groceries today.
Well, I'll go to the grocerystore tomorrow.
It's easy to say that, but thenwho knows what tomorrow has in
store for you?
Because I think that's thebiggest thing is, we always try

(06:30):
to give ourselves the out of.
I'll just do it tomorrow, butin the back of our mind, we know
that something more than likelyis going to end up coming up
tomorrow.
That's going to make us push it.
One more day, and one more daybecomes a week, and a week
becomes a month, and then, allof a sudden, you're looking at
the calendar and, damn, now itbecomes a new year's resolution
again, right?

(06:51):
So, regardless of how you feel, regardless of what you have
going on, if you need to do it,do it right.
You do it anyways, because yourresults the goal.
It doesn't care how you feel,it doesn't care what you have
going on, it just cares that thetasks that need to get done, or

(07:14):
the things that you need to do,get done so that you could
accomplish that goal.
If you want to win first place,if you don't run in the race,
you don't get first place youhave to do the task of running
right.
Other things you know kind ofgoing with.

(07:34):
It was like people that are, let's say, an athlete right,
they might be, might be able to,you know, say, like I'm an
athlete, so I train, even whenI'm sore because I'm an athlete,
they give themselves anidentity.
Right, if you're in sales, likeI'm a closer, so every single
day I prospect, every single day, you know I, I call, right.
But are you doing the otherthings that you need to do?

(07:55):
Right, you know I'm a, I'm a,let's say, an awesome dad, right
, so I show up for my, my kids, that's awesome, that's awesome.
But what else are you avoidingand doing?
Right, and I'm not saying don'tshow up for your kids,
obviously do.
But I was saying like there's,there's something that you know
you need to do that has beenprolonged for more than a day,

(08:19):
more than a week.
Right, just do that first step.
You may not know all the stepsthat are involved, and that's
okay, because if you think youknow the whole plan, you're a
little delusional, right, inmost cases.
Right, you're going to open abusiness.
I was talking to someone theother day.
You're going to open a business.
You know, I was talking tosomeone the other day.
They they asked for advice onin business.

(08:42):
Right, and tell me, they gaveme their whole game plan and
everything.
And I was like, oh, that'sawesome, and went to kind of
play devil's advocate, give thema little bit of you know, real
world examples of what canhappen.
And instead of listening tovice or, you know, trying to see

(09:02):
a solution to it, it was, oh,that that won't happen.
Okay, it's not in your planthat it's going to happen, but
it may.
Right, there's a lot thathappened with opening up strive
11, launching the franchise.
That I didn't plan for, right, but it happens.
That's life, that's the game, and that's why they say the game
isn't for everyone, because youdon't know what's around the

(09:22):
corner, but when a task presentsitself or a problem presents
itself, you do what needs to bedone, regardless of how you feel
.
You don't feel like preppingyour meals, do it anyways.
You don't feel like getting aworkout in today because you're
sore, do it anyways.
That's what's going to separateyou from average, right?

(09:44):
Because most people are goingto do exactly what you're
thinking is I'm sore, I'm notgoing to work out and they're
not going to work out.
You're sore, you go work outanyways.
Now you just took a step andgot a little bit further than
them and then you did it again.
You did it again.
All of a sudden, three days in,they're not sore anymore, they
go work out.
You did three workouts fortheir one In a year.

(10:07):
Let's say right, you've done300.
They've done 100.
What's the difference in yourbody versus their body going to
be?
What's the difference in yourbody versus their body going to
be?
Right, that's that's huge.
Think about, in business, you, when you run a business this is

(10:29):
where a lot of business owners, you know, I think, don't
understand when they say it's,it's tough is a lot of business
owners get into business becausethey think that you know, you
immediately get time freedom andyou know, get time freedom and
you're going to be feet upKronos on the beach and,
whatever the case may be Inreality, you're trading a nine
to five for a 24 seven.
You may not physically be atthe business, but your phone is

(10:55):
still on, you're still dealingwith problems.
Went to florida to, you know,um to meet with, like the
franchisee that we have outthere help out with some stuff.
My phone was still on and I wasstill talking with the
california location and goingover stuff with them.
Meanwhile, you know, stilltalking with the family, doing
my whole you know whatever.

(11:16):
Baby was born last week andactually a couple of days ago,
but last week technically, andstill phone was on in the
hospital, still sending textsout, right, still following up
with my team.
My team was awesome and theyreally crushed it and really

(11:36):
held the fort down.
But at the end of the day, Idon't get to turn my phone off
just because I have things goingon and I give kudos to my wife
and anyone that's married to anentrepreneur because it is not
easy, but at the same time youdo it anyways.
You do the things you need todo because you know you need to

(11:58):
do them to achieve the thingsthat you want to achieve.
No one's going to hand you thegoals that you want.
No one's going to hand you theresults you want.
No one's going to hand you thelife you want.
You have to earn it, you haveto take it.
And by taking it I mean thatyou have to do so much that is
undeniable for you to achievethe goals that you want to

(12:20):
achieve.
I'll repeat that again you haveto do it so much and you have
to put in so much effort that itis undeniable for you to not
achieve the goal that you setout to achieve.
Let that sink in.
Let that sink in so kind of.

(12:41):
I don't want I mean the soloepisodes.
I don't want to be too long, you know, I want them to kind of
be short and sweet, but I mightgo a little bit over my goal of
today of time.
But one of the things like withthis mantra is realizing that
it's actions over feelings.
Right, and that's a huge partof it.

(13:07):
Your tiredness, youranxiousness, your worryness I
guess, if that's a word, thoseare all feelings, right, actions
become before your feelings.
Actions become before yourfeelings.
So if you need to give yourself90 seconds to feel whatever
you're feeling, then take theaction.
That's fine, but it's the90-second rule.

(13:27):
Right, minute and a half Afterthat, get it done.
Any longer than that.
It's almost like if you're goingto jump into a pool and then,
or you one of those like youknow, um, what's it called when
you jump off the rocks into the, into the water, you know
jumping off something high, andall of a sudden you see someone
standing up there, and they'restanding up there for like a

(13:49):
couple minutes.
It doesn't get easier, right.
All of a sudden it startslooking taller, it starts
looking scarier, right.
So the task that you'reprolonging to do is only going
to look worse as time goes on.
When you just jump in, youdon't let that fear sit in, you
don't let that anxiousness sinkin, you just get into it.

(14:12):
And then you cross each bridgeas it comes.
That's what my biggest thing isrealize that when you do it
anyways, it's not because I knowall the pieces or because I
know what's around the corner,it's I know at least the first
step, and then I cross eachbridge as it comes.
I'm not worried about 10bridges down, 10 problems down,

(14:34):
like I don't know what those aregoing to be.
They might not even be what Ithink they're going to be.
So I'm not worried about them.
If there's nothing I can doabout it, right, this second, I
don't worry about it.
I just do the things I know Ineed to do in the moment and
that's it.
So realize that if you'reletting your fear sink in, if
you're letting your feelings setand your feelings, you know,

(14:57):
replace you taking action, you're now giving those feelings
almost constraint over you,right, it's?
It's the excuses that you giveyourself are almost holding you
hostage in the current positionthat you're at, current position

(15:24):
that you're at.
So, regardless of how you feel,if you just take action before
all the feelings set in, you'renot going to be held prisoner to
your current state.
You're going to be able to doas much as you need to do so
that you make it undeniable foryou to achieve, undeniable for
you not to achieve the goalsthat you set out to be right.
With that being said, I wrotesome notes.
I just want to make sure Icover everything real quick.

(15:44):
Oh, one thing like with thistoo, is with big tasks, right,
little tasks not so much.
You know, you don't feel liketaking all the trash and just do
it real quick, right, littletask.
But how you do one thing isRight and it's a little task.
But what?
How you do one thing is how youdo everything.
So, like those feelings, theyget easier by those little tasks

(16:05):
.
You don't feel like you knowmaking that phone call, just
make it real quick.
Not that big of a deal, right, but that's a little win under
your belt.
Like you know, it's a brick youget to lay in your foundation.
But the big things that you dowhen you eat the frog, you do it
in the beginning of the day.
Mark that on the board.
Today was a win.
You did what you needed to do.

(16:26):
You did something that movedthe needle.
Mark that on the board.
All of a sudden you look up onthe board and you have a bunch
of little gold stars Awesome.
That's motivation right therefor yourself.
Internal motivation, becauseyou feeling like you want to do
it.
That's external motivation andthat's not going to last.
You can watch a David Goddard inthe video.
You could watch, um, you knowsome YouTube clips and whatever

(16:48):
the case may be to make you feelunmotivated, that shit will
fade Once you're about to do it.
All of a sudden you're staringat the pond and you're about to
jump in and that thosemotivational videos went out the
door.
The pond and you're about tojump in and that those
motivational videos went out thedoor Right.
So realize that just doing itbefore any of the feelings sink

(17:08):
in is key.
But give yourself a littlelittle check on the board Every
time you do what you need to do.
All of a sudden you have atally of all the things that
you've, all the days you'veaccomplished.
It goes a long way for somepeople, right.
And for big tasks, set a set upclear line.
Is what is complete, right?
Like a certain project, certainthings might have multiple

(17:30):
sections to it, right.
What are you accomplishingtoday?
Right, if I'm going to launchan ad campaign, right, let's for
the business to say well, todayI'm going to make all of the
ads that I'm going to make thecreatives, the images, the
videos.
Today I'm just making thepictures, right.
Boom, I accomplished all thepictures.
Boom, that's a win for the day.

(17:51):
If I want to start working onthe videos now, I can, because
I've already accomplished what Ineed I set out to accomplish
for the day.
I'm not saying I'm working onthe ad campaign today and
leaving it there and leaving itvague, because if I don't finish
the ad campaign it's nottechnically a win, just like
this year.
Let's say you want to lose 100pounds, that's awesome.

(18:16):
But today my goal is to burn Xamount of calories so that I can
check off the board and be onmy way to losing that 100 pounds
.
This week my goal is to lose apound so that again I check off
the week that I hit that onegoal.
Small milestones allow you tofinish the marathon.
So with that being said, guys, again I just want to say do it
anyways.
That mantra, honestly, thatthought process, let it become

(18:39):
just who you are.
Right, people will ask you howyou do it with the life you have
going on with the family, withthis and with that.
I just do it anyways.
So I hope that helps someonetoday.
I just want to say I doappreciate you guys.
I hope you guys liked the soloepisodes.
We'll do more of them short andsweet and to the point.
But again I appreciate you guys.

(19:00):
I'll see you guys on the nextepisodes.
We'll do more of them short andsweet and to the point, um, but
again I appreciate you guys.
I'll see you guys on the nextone.

The Burden

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
