Speaker 1 (00:00):
She knew that she didn't have a lot of time
left and she was in a lot of pain. Her
leg had been crushed, so that's when she asked the
rescue workers if they could just pause and say a
prayer out loud with her.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
This is Miracles in the News. Welcome back to Miracles
in the News. So today's news story actually happened eleven
years ago. Yep, but it sounds like there's some mystery
and really cool miracles, so I'm here for it.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
Yes. So our story starts actually in Hannibal, Missouri, when
a drunk driver crossed the center line of traffic on
a two lane highway and crashed headfirst into katie Lenses convertible.
Her car was turned into a mangled heap of metal.
She was critically injured. She was still conscious, but she
(00:49):
was pinned between her steering wheel and her seat. Rescue
a cruise tried for about an hour to cut Katie
out of her vehicle, but she had an older Mercedes
with really thick metal and their tools were not sharp
enough to cut through the metal, so she was trapped
in her vehicle. The medical team there was keeping track
of her vitals and unfortunately they said that she was
(01:11):
failing fast.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Sheriff's deputy Richard Dare, won't forget when the fire chief
turned to him in despair.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
He was concerned because he was out of options.
Speaker 4 (01:20):
The tools weren't working, and it was by that time,
I said, almost an hour.
Speaker 1 (01:25):
He said, I don't know how we're going to get her.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Out if the firefighters can't get her out, Like, who
else are you going to call? What else are you
going to do?
Speaker 1 (01:33):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Right, I always assume that you call nine one one
and the first responders are going to have all the answers.
But yeah, I mean, I guess every case is different,
but it's like, what else do you do?
Speaker 1 (01:42):
I know, you just think they're going to be able
to get you out?
Speaker 2 (01:45):
Right?
Speaker 1 (01:46):
But it had to be so scary for poor Katie
because she could hear all of this going on, and
she knew the situation was dire. She knew that she
didn't have a lot of time left, and she was
in a lot of pain. Her leg had been crushed.
That's when she asked the rescue workers if they could
just pause and say a prayer out loud with her.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Wow, I mean that is amazing faith. I'm sure I
would probably just be like, don't stop, get me out
of here, you know.
Speaker 1 (02:14):
Mm hmmm, I know same. But what was even more
amazing was that as if on cue, a mysterious stranger
just stepped out from behind the emergency vehicles.
Speaker 4 (02:26):
That's when first responders say, a man who looked like
a Catholic priest seemed to appear out of nowhere, despite
a two mile perimeter blocking the scene.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
He began to pray and use the anointing hall. There
was a calmness to come that to me, seemed to
come over the entire scene.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
Okay, so they said there's a two mile perimeter, like,
where did he come from? And it looks like in
the video they're surrounded by farmland.
Speaker 5 (02:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (02:52):
In fact, some of the firefighters even thought that the
priest had just walked right out from the cornfield next
to them onto the scene. And honestly, no one knew
where he had come from, but what he did was amazing.
He blessed Katie with anointing oil, and he prayed for
Katie to be calm and to be comforted. He prayed
(03:13):
that the firefighters would be able to cut Katie out
of her car, and that their tools would work.
Speaker 4 (03:19):
The Hannibal Fire Department showed up right after that prayer
with fresh equipment and was able to finish the extrication.
After getting Katie safely into the air Evac helicopter, at
least a dozen other rescue workers turned around to thank
the priest, who was nowhere in sight.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
Where did he go?
Speaker 1 (03:38):
Okay? So that's what everybody wanted to know. Afterwards, The
rescue workers were so confused, and of course they were
so grateful for this mysterious priest who had calmed them,
who had calmed the whole situation and helped everybody. And
here's what one first responder said.
Speaker 3 (03:55):
It is my feeling that it was nothing more than
sheer faith and nothing short of a miracle.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
A miracle, a miracle. Okay. So do you think that
he was an angel or did they ever find him?
Speaker 1 (04:14):
Well, that's the thing. They could not find the priest
at all. He completely disappeared and out of the eighty
pictures that they took that day, they took eighty photos,
and he didn't appear in a single one of them.
So word began spreading through the news through everyone that
he may have actually been more than an earthly angel
(04:35):
like maybe he really was a heavenly being.
Speaker 2 (04:37):
Wow, that's so cool, I mean, especially because there were
so many people there who witnessed that.
Speaker 1 (04:43):
Yeah, it was crazy and it was a total mystery,
and all of the news stations at the time were
calling the priest an angel priest, and they were trying
to figure out what really happened. But three days later
the mystery was solved. It turns out that the was
an earthly angel after all.
Speaker 2 (05:02):
Surprise.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
Yeah, a few days after the crash, Father Patrick Dowling
stepped board as the mysterious angel priest. It's me guys
whole time exactly.
Speaker 2 (05:17):
So.
Speaker 1 (05:17):
Father Dowling said that he had been heading to mass
as a substitute for another priest who had gotten sick,
and he'd come up on this big traffic jam, you know,
they were diverting traffic. He knew that there was an
accident up ahead, and so he finally got his car
as close as he could, he parked it, and then
he walked the rest of the way until he got
(05:38):
to the scene of the accident, and there he asked
a sheriff if he could proceed to Katie and was
given permission, And then of course he anointed Katie with oil.
He prayed with everyone there and especially prayed that the
tools would be able to work and cut her out
of her car. And what he did just calmed everyone.
(05:58):
Everyone on scene said that it turned the whole situation around.
And this is what Father Dolling himself said.
Speaker 5 (06:06):
I didn't hide, and I just stood there waiting, praying.
This is a my toy God who intervened because there
was something exception there in the manner of her rescue.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
I think it's funny that he's like, I wasn't trying
to hide.
Speaker 1 (06:25):
I know, like I just just like i'd come on people.
I wasn't trying to make this mysterious.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
I mean, he was not a literal angel, but he
certainly was an earthly angel. And I think it's so
cool that he was, you know, just a substitute that day.
It's not like he was heading to his regular job.
And how often do we hear things like this where
plans change, something comes up, something different happens to put
somebody in the right place at the right time.
Speaker 1 (06:53):
Yeah, we hear it so often.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
Yeah. I don't know if you remember the story or not, Holly,
but it reminds me of the time where we went.
We have some friends who have a houseboat and they
invited us to spend a week on their houseboat. This
beautiful lake, massive lake. It took us over an hour
boat ride just to get to our spot. We're going
through these winding canyons. We found this very secluded beach.
I mean we only saw maybe one or two other
(07:17):
boats a day there. It was so beautiful. And on
the top of their houseboat, they have a water slide
and the kids were constantly going down the water slide,
but my daughter so fun. But my daughter was all
wet running up the stairs to go up to the
slide and these are metal this going she trips and falls,
(07:38):
smashes her nose right on the corner of this metal stairs,
and instantly we hear screams. I didn't see it happened,
but I heard the screams. I come out and her
nose is completely deformed, and I was ah, dying inside.
I was just trying to be brave for her, but
I started crying. I held her and it was like,
what do I do. We are an hour away from
the closest boat dock, and then we're another hour away
(08:01):
to the closest doctor's office. We have no self coverage.
I have no idea what to do in the scenario.
I just I was like, I'm just going to say, prayer,
God help me. What do I do? I don't do
I take her right now? What do I do? And
right then there was a boat that pulled around this
corner of this little canyon, and I just was like, hey,
(08:25):
I said to my friend Heather asked if they have
a doctor on the boat, And so it was very
awkward for her, but she yelled out to this boat,
flagged him down and said, excuse me, do you happen
to have a doctor on the boat. And this woman
stands up and says, I'm not a doctor, but I
am an ear nurse.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
Oh my gosh.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
And she came and she checked out my daughter, and
she I mean really, she told us that when the
swelling would, oh yeah, the swelling. She told us the
swelling would have to go down before a doctor could
even you know, examine her and figure out what to
do next. And so she told us there was an
emergency just and for now, but if you have ice,
we had ice, yes, But it was such an answer
(09:07):
to my prayer and exactly what I needed in that
moment to like have a nurse check it out and
tell me the steps to take. And I look back
on that and I think we were in the most
secluded part of this lake. We saw maybe one or
two boats today. And the fact that it was the
moment that I was praying asking God what I should do,
that this boat comes around the corner. There's an e
(09:29):
our nurse. Like, I just knew that was a direct
answer to my prayers from God. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:33):
And just like this priest who just happened to be
going to substitute for somebody.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
Else shows up out of nowhere.
Speaker 1 (09:40):
Yeah, not his not his normal routine. He was out
of his normal routine, and yet he was where he
needed to be and.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
He was sent by God. Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:51):
So Katie was later able to meet Father Dowling in person.
So here's a little clip from.
Speaker 4 (09:56):
That Friday's meeting between Katie and Father Dolling on Katie's
twentieth birthday, a birthday that might not have come without
the help of everyone involved in rescuing her from this
head on collision.
Speaker 6 (10:07):
So nice to be able to talk to you and
meet you and understand who you are as not such
a mystery anymore. And I'm so thankful you were there
and just to give us all a sense of calmness.
And I really appreciate that without you, the story wouldn't
have gone where it was, so I know you were
(10:28):
only doing what you were.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
Called to do.
Speaker 5 (10:29):
I'm very happy to see her doing it so well.
Speaker 2 (10:34):
You know, it's so interesting to me something that we
hear people often say, you know, in comments online or wherever,
is that when we give credit to God somehow that
takes away credit from the first responders and these heroes.
And that could not be further from the truth. Now,
I mean, these we absolutely honor these first responders. They
(10:56):
were heroes. That's exactly what they were. Oh but I
think heroes, Yeah, but I don't think that giving God
credit takes anything away from them. I mean, they were
still heroes and so was God.
Speaker 1 (11:08):
Yes, both can be true. Yeah, But to me, what's
so powerful about this story in particular is that the heroes,
the first responders in the story were some of the
very first people to acknowledge God's hand in it. And
Katie was, of course so grateful for everyone who helped
her that day. I mean, she would not be where
(11:29):
she is today without all those people helping her. And
what's also really powerful is that they are grateful for
Katie as well because they were so inspired by her faith.
And here's what some of the first responders said, the.
Speaker 3 (11:44):
Commitment that she had to God that day, it just
made me think, Man, if someone in that situation can
stay that loyal, what's my excuse In.
Speaker 7 (11:56):
These times when all you hear are bad stories. Man,
it's really nice to hear the good ones and to
see the good ones and know that there are still
people out there that have that relationship with God and
have that good family relationship and strength.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
And it was kind of a realization that she made it.
Speaker 7 (12:13):
She's God saved her.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
I think that's such a good reminder that when these
hard things happen in our lives, sometimes you just got
to stop and pray out loud like Katie did, Pray.
Speaker 1 (12:27):
