Many times, people enter a recovery facility or a shelter, and still haven't surrendered their will. The guests will often do everything they can to appear like they are working on themselves, while still fooling their friends, counselors, family, and even themselves. Curtis draws the parallels between this time of recovery and the biblical terminology of hypocrisy.
