Feeling called to coach others but constantly questioning if you're ready? You're not alone. This deeply resonant exploration reveals why "readiness" isn't something that magically happens to you—it's a decision you make followed by action.

Through candid personal stories, we share how we both sabotaged our own growth by convincing ourselves we weren't ready. Mark postponed coach certification for two years while Teresa nearly passed up a career-defining opportunity in sustainability leadership. Both situations exposed the same truth: waiting to feel ready often makes things worse, not better.

We demystify what it means to be an "expert," revealing the surprising legal definition that requires just 10% more knowledge than the general public. This perspective shift liberates you from the burden of perfection and highlights that your unique experiences already qualify you to help others. Whether you've overcome health challenges, career transitions, or personal struggles, that journey contains wisdom someone else desperately needs.

The clarity and confidence you're seeking won't come from endless preparation—they emerge through taking action, especially when it feels uncomfortable. Your brain naturally creates protective barriers disguised as logical reasons to delay: waiting for the perfect timing, more credentials, or external validation. Recognizing these patterns allows you to move past them into your true potential.

Ready to embrace your coaching journey? Whether you're just starting or looking to deepen your impact, our certification program provides the framework and personalized feedback to help you master the coaching process. Speaker 1 (00:00):
So if you're either a coach or somebody who's feeling
called into coaching, but youhave this constant thought of
like, am I even ready?
Well, this video is for you.
Today, we're actually going todive into not only some ideas
around being ready, but alsowhat we've been able to do when
it comes to coaching people andreally helping them identify,
how to make them not only seethat they're ready but fully

(00:23):
change their trajectory forever.
So what's up everybody?
So today's quote, we got apowerful quote.
It is readiness isn't just afeeling, it's a decision, and
we're going to help you make it.
I love.
I love that so much, becausethat's really what we love to do
is we like to help peopleidentify maybe some things, some
gaps, some things that aregoing on in their brain that is
preventing them from showing upas their best version of

(00:45):
themselves.
Now, I actually remember whenthis first happened to me.
It was because I had beencoaching but I hadn't been
getting the results that I hadwanted, and I remember that for
two years in a row, I had sawthis opportunity to actually get
certified as a coach and Ihesitated for two years, I think
mostly because it was $18,000at the time and the only way

(01:06):
they were going to pay that wason a credit card.
But I convinced myself that Iwasn't ready.
I wasn't ready for that levelof investment, but I also wasn't
ready for that level ofcoaching.
And what I didn't realize isthat I was already ready.
Already, it literally was atthe exact moment that I needed
to take that step.
Because here's the thing Iconvinced myself for two years

(01:27):
to hit pause, to not sign up, tonot submit, to just delete the
emails, to pretend like theydidn't happen, to do one of
these things.
And when I quote unquote got tothree years, nothing had changed
.
As a matter of fact, itactually had gotten worse.
It's one of those things whereyou can convince yourself.
At the time I was workingfull-time at LAPD, having kids,
working on my health, all thesekind of things.
I had convinced myself that Iwasn't ready, and because I

(01:50):
convinced myself I wasn't ready,I didn't actually take these
steps that I needed to.
But year three, everythingchanged.
So I just want to let you knowthat if you've ever been there,
you my, my friend are not alone.
If there's ever been any areaof your life where you feel like
I'm just not ready, we're goingto actually help you navigate
that today, but we also knowthat you've navigated some of
that stuff before to even get towhere you are today.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
I think a lot of people get confused by this, and
we coach a lot of peoplethrough this and it comes out in
many different forms, manydifferent stories, many
different perspectives, but whenit all boils down to it, it's
that they don't feel ready.
And I'm here to tell you thatthat is a myth, because, in
reality, really taking actionwill gain you that clarity of

(02:36):
becoming ready.
And the truth is that readinessis just showing up messy and
not waiting for perfection, because we feel like everything
has to align, everything has tobe just perfect in order for us
to feel ready.
But, like Mark said earlier, being ready is just a decision

(02:57):
that you need to make.
So when I was working full time, I was working at UCLA Health,
I was multitasking, I was doinga lot of different things, but
there was one thing inparticular, which was
sustainability, and there was aposition that came up.
They actually created thisposition because they knew how
important it was to work ondifferent climate initiatives
and they, you know, said, likemy boss told me hey, you should

(03:20):
put in for this position becauseyou're already doing the work.
And then even Mark was like, yeah, go for it because you're
already doing it and I knowyou're going to do amazing, and
at the time I was not ready.
Right, I was convincing myselfthat this was way too much for
me.
It was too much for me to takeon.

(03:41):
I wasn't worthy, I wasn't goingto be able to make it, I was
going to make a fool out ofmyself, all of these different
things.
But it all boiled down to Ididn't feel ready.
But then I put in for it.
I put in for it and I got theposition.
So I became the firstsustainability programs manager
for the UCLA health system.
And that point in my life waswhen I finally realized that

(04:04):
just making the decision wassomething I could have done a
long time ago, like why didn't Ido this earlier?
Type thing.
But it made me realize that, even if nothing like really felt
aligned, that I was readyanyway because I had made that
decision.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
Yep, yep, and I actually got to live through
that, because I remember havingconversations with Teresa about
this and I remember having tocoach her through it and bring
up some realizations for her.
Right, because it's so easy tosee that somebody else is ready.
Yeah, right, very hard to seethat we're ready because we have
all the behind the scenes stuffthat's going on, right, which
is why we want to help you guystoday, because maybe you feel

(04:40):
like through your filter, thatyou're not actually ready.
But I remember from that, fromthose conversations, I remember
saying, well, if you weren'tready, why would your boss
literally tell you hey, you needto apply for this?

Speaker 2 (04:53):
Yeah, and it's like it's, it's tapping into the
logical side of our brain, rightand.
But, like I said, like we tryto convince ourselves otherwise,
because there's all these deeprooted beliefs we have about
ourselves 100%.

Speaker 1 (05:06):
Like one of the things that that, like we take
people through in ourcertification, is to realize
that our brain really just wantsto keep us safe and anything
that it can convince us ofincluding I'm not ready is
actually there to protect you.
But when you become aware of it, you take your foot off of the
brake and put your foot on thegas.
Your life changes forever.

(05:27):
But then everybody else's lifethat you touched because you
were willing to lean in and totake those actions, even though
you didn't feel ready.
That's really where the gamechanger is.
I want you to think what doesan expert mean?
What do you think an expertmeans, by the way?

Speaker 2 (05:42):
I think it's knowing 10% more than the general public
.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
Yep.
So I used to be a policeofficer for 20 years for LAPD
and while going through thatprocess I was a court qualified
gang expert and when you go intocourt you're not allowed to
give opinions.
Only if you're a qualifiedexpert then you can give
opinions.
But the thing is, in order foryou to give, like your opinions,
you have to be deemed as theexpert in that field, and I got

(06:06):
to be honest, that scared me.
But do you know what an expertis defined as in the court
system?
It is having 10% more knowledgethan the general public, and
I'm like, if I even know theacronym for this gang, that
makes me 10% more knowledgeablethan most people in the public,
because they would have no idea, and it was such a big process I
was so nervous about it.

(06:27):
But all you have to do is know10% more than the general public
.
So if you're going into a spacewhere you're like, hey, I'm
going to help somebody withtheir health and fitness For
example, I lost 100 pounds, Iwent through a lot of
transformation Do I know 10%more about losing weight and
staying healthy than somebodywho's never experienced that

(06:47):
before?
Answer is yes.
I would be a quote unquoteweight loss expert.
Now, I'm not going to go outthere and go like, hey guys, I'm
the weight loss expert, but forme, being able to pull that
into a session, I'm like youknow what.
I don't have to help anybodyget to like someplace that I've
never been.
All I have to do is help enoughpeople get to where I currently
am.
When we think about the impactthat we're here to make in the

(07:09):
world, that's when we releasethose expectations of like.
We have to like.
It's about us, or what arepeople going to think?
Or how am I going to do thispost?
What does somebody need to heartoday?
When you think about people whoare scrolling through their
newsfeed today, they need yourhelp.
They need to get their healthand fitness in alignment.
They need to get their mindseton point.
Those people who are scrolling, what do they need to hear today

(07:31):
when you think about it fromthat respect, you don't think
about like, oh, I don't knowwhat am I going to say, or all
that it comes from a no, listenlike.
This is what I need to sharewith you, because I want to
change your life, and this is anopportunity for you to do that,
and it could even be.
This is what helped me todaychange my life, and I want to
pass it on to you, and I want togive you this little gift of

(07:52):
inspiration, because you've gotthat living inside of you too.
Now here's the thing Claritycomes from action.
Guys, you are not going to beable to think through in your
head all the possible scenariosand have all of the answers to
everything that could possiblyhappen to you.
It's not going to happen Inreal life.
We take action and we learn.
Did we do this?
Well, let's keep doing it.
Or did we not do it?
Well, let's do somethingdifferent.

(08:12):
That's literally what our wholelives are about, and this is
really about leaning into thispower, but also realizing you're
more than ready right now.
It's just all about takingaction.
So there's this philosophy oridea around I'll be ready when
this happens.
Okay, this happens is typicallylike something outside of
yourself.
If you are waiting forsomething outside of yourself to
tell you that you're ready, you're missing the point, just

(08:35):
like I was missing the point, just like Teresa was missing the
point when you heard ourstories earlier today.
We were waiting for somethingon the outside.
Readiness is a decision.
It's a decision that you makethat right now.
You're ready and you're goingto step into it, and you're
going to take messy action andyou're going to learn everything
along the way.
That's what powerful leaders, powerful coaches, powerful

(08:56):
humans, powerful parents, spouses that's what they do.
They're willing to lean in,especially when times are
uncomfortable, take action andlearn along the way.
Now our brain is gonna try andconvince us that it's not the
time that this will happen.
This will be once the kids getout of school, or once they go
back to school, or once you makemore money, or once your
business gets bigger, or all ofthese things when, in fact, this

(09:19):
thing is the thing that willhelp you do those things.
It's crazy, when you thinkabout it logically, of like,
actually doing this thing willhelp me be able to accomplish
that right.
But know that you're not broken.
That's the way your brain issupposed to work, because it's
meant to keep you safe.
Being able to identify some ofthese things you're telling
yourself, being able to reframethem and being able to really

(09:39):
step into your power is not onlygoing to make an impact for you
, your family and the peoplethat you talk to, but also the
ripple effect that it has inother people's lives, which is
literally why we put togetherour certification.
It is so amazing when we canteach people this skill really
deep, dive into the growth modeland all the things that we
teach inside of thecertification to help people

(09:59):
achieve what it is they want toachieve, and then we see the
ripple effect that that has intheir lives but also all the
other people's lives that theycoach.
That's really what we're superpassionate about.
You are more than ready tostart coaching, to start having
conversations and to starthelping people.
But we also know just like howI found out is that sometimes if
we don't have the right tools, sometimes if we don't have a

(10:21):
framework to follow, we can getinto situations where maybe
we're trying to give advice whenin reality, we really shouldn't
be.
We need to help them get notonly to the root of what's
actually going on, but helpcoach them through the process
and become an expert in theprocess of coaching, and that's
why we have opened up ourcertification for the next round
.
Starting in July is when wehave our next round of our

(10:44):
certification process, ourprogram.
Now there's two ways for us tocommunicate.
Number one is if it's somethingthat you're interested in, type
in the comments below, send methe details, and what we'll do
is my team will find out how toconnect with you so that we can
send you those details.
But since we're on YouTube,it's a lot harder to connect
that way.
The second option, which isprobably the best, is if you
sign up at our certificationwaitlist, which is

(11:05):
modernleadershipus forward slashcertification, we will reach
out to you, have a conversation, see if this is a good fit,
because we don't just randomlyadd people in and through that
conversation, via email orgetting on a call, whatever you
want we're going to help makesure that this is the right step
for you where you are right now.
This is for people who they'vethought about coaching, but they
have no idea what they could orshould be doing when they're a

(11:27):
coach.
They just started coaching, butthey don't have any kind of
framework or anything they canhelp with.
Or they've been coaching for awhile, but they need a little
bit more confidence, some of theskills, to be able to know that
they can help their clients getthrough anything that their
clients are going through, because they become an expert in
coaching.
That's what we teach inside ofthe certification.
It's not just a teach watchthese modules.
You're actually implementing it, practicing it live, getting

(11:50):
feedback from me and from ourteam, and going out and doing
this more and more to get to thepoint where, at the end of
seven months, you're like I havemastered this and you won't be
actually questioning yourself ifyou have enough confidence to
be able to help coach people.
You will know, because we willmake sure that that happens.
So if that's something you guysare interested in, definitely

(12:11):
dive in.
Shoot us that comment below orsign up for the waitlist
moderdleadershipus forward slashcertification and then we'll go
from there.
And let me just end with thisno matter what your brain tries
to convince you, you don't getready until you start taking
action.
Like, taking action is the partthat will give you the clarity
to actually make you ready.
Deciding that you're ready, taking action that is what truly

(12:31):
makes you ready, because onceyou do that, think about all the
energy and effort that you willput into it so that you can
quote unquote feel ready.
So get out there, crush it.
Thank you for what you do outthere every single day and keep
leading from the front team.
