(02:12):
Hi, Yolanda, welcome to theshow.
Yolanda Spearman (02:14):
Hey Deanna,
thank you so much for having me.
Gianna Diggs (02:17):
I'm excited to
speak with you today because
we're going to be talking aboutclarity and the power of
clarity, and I think that as momentrepreneurs a lot of times, we
lack clarity in certain areas inour life and in our business.
And so I'm so excited to speakwith you today about this topic.
So talk to me about what wasgoing on in your life, that made
you realize that you werelacking clarity.
Yolanda Spearman (02:39):
Okay, sure.
So, again, thank you so much forhaving me.
2017 January, I just had ouryoungest son, he may have been
about six or seven months a yearold.
I received a text message, fromsomeone who basically, very long
story short, Said that he hadproof that, my husband and his
wife had an affair and it hadbeen going on for so long.
(03:02):
he actually, you know, Was verycolorful in the text message.
And so of course, I wasdevastated.
I was of course heard, I wasconfused.
I was, okay, do I stay?
Do I go, what am I going to do?
So at that, during that timingof, Yeah, this happened.
What am I going to do?
(03:22):
I definitely needed someclarity, definitely, needed to
figure out, like I said, do Istay?
And if I stay, what does thatlook like?
Do I leave?
If I leave?
What does that look like?
Because not only did I have myyoungest son, but we also had a,
Our daughter was, uh, I wannasay two or three at the time.
And then we have some olderchildren.
(03:42):
So I wasn't, and I'm not sayingthat anyone should ever say
because of, you know, childrenor anything like that, but these
are some things that I, youknow, had to consider, well, if
I leave, how is this going tonot only impact me?
How's it gonna impact my olderkids?
How is it gonna impact myyounger kids if I stay?
What does that look like?
So, just a whole gamut ofconfusion and.
You hear the little munchkins inthe background, I apologize, but
(04:04):
just the whole gamut of what, what am I going to do?
And I definitely needed sometype of clarity, surrounding
that.
Gianna Diggs (04:12):
Hmm.
I think that's powerful in thatyou, most people, When stuff is
going on in their life, right?
It's, it's always a reactionarything.
And the fact that you just, youuse the clarity to, to help you
make the one of the biggestdecisions that you would've had
to make.
I think that's powerful.
So what strategies, have youfound to be helpful in creating
(04:35):
the clarity for your life andnow in your business?
Yolanda Spearman (04:38):
Sure.
So, I am not sure if theycontinue to do this in the
schools, but I know when I wasgrowing up, when they would
teach us about fire safety, theywould always say, okay, you
going to stop, drop and roll.
And so those are just some threebasic strategies and things that
just stuck out with me.
So, stop to acknowledge whereyou are.
And that can be in life, thatcan be as a entrepreneur, that
(05:01):
can be in your business.
Where are you?
I'm here and this is where Iwant to go, but right now I
don't have, all of the money tobe run that multimillion dollar
business that I want to, run.
But I have$500 to get started, you know, just acknowledging
where you are.
Stop to acknowledge where youare and then, drop.
I just use that for drop thefacade,
Gianna Diggs (05:22):
Hmm.
I
Yolanda Spearman (05:23):
and change
your, you know, just change your
station.
Because as a, as a mom, as awoman, as a wife, you know, you
have so many things that aregoing on in your head.
You can't do it.
You're too old, you're tooyoung, you're too this, you're
too that.
So you have to change your, youknow, station.
Um, and stop listening to all ofthat, stinking thinking.
(05:43):
Either it's from without or fromwithin.
And then for roll, I just said, you know, you just gotta roll
with it.
You're gonna have somerollercoaster days.
Some days are gonna be good, some days are gonna be not so
good.
But just expected and roll withit, in life and like it's
definitely in business.
There things are gonna happen.
And then don't rush.
(06:03):
Just you stay your course.
Your course is your course.
Your mompreneur journey is yourmompreneur journey, no one
else's.
And you, you know, do what youneed to do, in order to fulfill
the purpose that you know youhave for your life.
Gianna Diggs (06:18):
I like that.
Stop dropping.
Roll.
That's easy.
I think the kids, I'm like, Ishould ask my five year old, do
you use, stop dropping.
I hope you, you stop droppingroll in school.
But I love how you, you tooksomething that we all know and,
and that, that's your process.
Cuz that, that feels easy.
I think a lot of times it comesto clarity, it's like we make
the process so hard.
(06:40):
Right.
It's like we, we make it like,I'm not sure.
I don't know.
And then, you know, you're goingback and forth and you go
through your, the seven stagesof grief.
Right.
You know, whether somethinggrieving happened or not, right?
You walk through that, all the, that whole process when you're,
when you're trying to gainclarity, whether it's, you know,
(07:00):
do you.
Create this program in yourbusiness or, you know, what
created your thing of, do I staywith my husband who I just found
out was cheating?
Right?
Like,
Yolanda Spearman (07:09):
Great.
Gianna Diggs (07:10):
and so I, I love
that.
It's just stop drop, and rollwith it because we make things
so hard.
Yolanda Spearman (07:19):
Yeah, I, I
think so.
I don't know if they still teachthat.
So for all of my firefightermoms out there, entrepreneurs
and your listening audience, ifthat is not the case, then just
let it just apply to justseeking clarity.
And for me it just has to besimple, you know, like you said,
that stop dropping, roll.
It just has to be simple andthen just go with it from there.
Gianna Diggs (07:40):
Right.
And I think that's, that's wherewe gain the most clarity is when
we simplify it.
Yolanda Spearman (07:45):
Mm-hmm.
Mm-hmm.
Gianna Diggs (07:46):
So what are, what
are some of the biggest
obstacles, like when you'recreating clarity in your life
and
Yolanda Spearman (07:53):
Okay.
Sure.
So, silencing, and I'm, I'mspeaking from me, and, I think
it may resonate with otherentrepreneurs silencing that
inner critic within, um, the onethat says, no, you can't, or you
two this, or you two that.
So just silencing that innercritic.
And then unfortunately, sometimes it's the critics of
(08:13):
those without, so those who maybe closest to you.
So silencing those critics.
And then comparing myself toothers.
That's, that's something that Iam definitely learning to undo.
Like I said earlier, my journeyis my journey.
Your journey is your journey.
We can look to one another forinspiration, but we don't need
to compare ourselves to oneanother.
(08:35):
Looking through the lens ofsomeone else to gain my clarity,
funny.
We're a family of seven and outof that seven, four of us wear
glasses.
My husband, my oldest daughter, myself and my youngest daughter
now, if I picked up my youngestdaughter's glasses to see
through, even though I need someclarity, but if I look through
(08:56):
her glasses, It's still gonna beblurry.
I'm still not gonna be able toundersee anything because I'm
looking at it through her lens.
So I need to make sure that I'mlooking through my lens to gain
my perfect clarity and notthrough someone else's.
And then finally, I would sayjust, overcoming perfectionism.
I am just, Unlearning that andlearning that.
(09:18):
Progress.
Making progress, makingprogress, making progress
because when you, I'm aperfectionist, it will paralyze
you.
And when you're paralyzed, you're not able to do anything
or offer anything to anyone.
So just those are the thingsthat are probably the biggest
obstacle.
I've had.
Gianna Diggs (09:36):
I love the analogy
of glasses cuz it's, it's so
funny because my niece wearsglasses and my daughter, she
has, she can see she doesn'tneed any glasses.
I wear contacts.
I'm probably the only one, myhusband, he has.
Perfect vision.
And so I guess my daughter takesafter her
Yolanda Spearman (09:52):
Right?
Gianna Diggs (09:53):
um, my mom is the
same way.
We all, and my grandmother, weall have glasses and things,
right?
And I tell her all the time, like, don't put on your cousin's
glasses.
I wanna wear glasses.
I'm like, you can't see.
I can see.
No, you can't.
And I say all that to say that Alot of times we look at the
gurus and we look at those whohave multimillion dollar
businesses, or we look at thepeople who have our dream lives
(10:15):
and not that we can't learn fromthem.
That's.
Obviously not what I'm sayingbecause you're there.
People are learning from ustoday listening to this episode,
but it's discerning that.
They may be able to direct youin, you know, learning things
that you are not aware of.
But at the end of the day, they, like you said, this is your
journey.
This is your journey inbusiness, and the decisions that
(10:36):
you wanna make in your businessare still, you talk about
perfectionism, but are stillperfect in that it's meant for
you.
Right.
And even if you do stumble, ifwe don't make mistakes, like how
will we learn?
And I think.
And I'm glad you said you'relearning, cuz I definitely, am
learning about thatperfectionism, because it's,
(10:56):
it's stifled me in so many waysand like I don't want that for
anyone else.
Yolanda Spearman (11:01):
right.
right.
Most definitely a monster thatwe all need to, we all need to
tame and I'm definitely, like Isaid, we have older kids.
Our oldest is 27 and ouryoungest is six.
So, things differently withgroup two than with group one.
And definitely making sure thatwe let group two know, Hey, just
(11:21):
do do your best.
It's not about perfectionism cuzyou'll drive yourself crazy.
Make progress.
How did you do today?
Did you feel you did your best?
Yes.
Great.
No.
Okay.
Well, what can we do to improveupon that, you know, in the
future?
Gianna Diggs (11:34):
right.
And I love that you're teachingyour kids that, cuz I don't
think we were, you know, we weretaught that.
Right.
Yolanda Spearman (11:40):
Mm-hmm.
Right,
Gianna Diggs (11:42):
So for you,
especially when you have young
kids, it's so important.
So how do you know when youfound your clarity?
Yolanda Spearman (11:51):
right.
So I believe, honestly, thatthere's a sense of peace.
You know, that resonates fromwithin.
And even if you are afraid oryou're nervous, or you've had
this idea for a business andit's like you got these
butterflies in your stomach, Butyou know that, you know that,
you know that this is somethingthat you are supposed to do.
(12:12):
You've received the clarity.
This is the lane that you'resupposed to be in.
There's a sense of, okay, Idon't know how I'm gonna do it.
I don't even know, who's gonnabe able to help me do this?
I've got a ton of butterflies.
But if I don't do this, not onlywill I not be walking in my
purpose, but I'll also causeothers to miss out on what I'm
supposed to be offering them.
(12:34):
Um, so I believe that's how youknow when you're able to do it.
even when you're, I think I saidat one point, you're nerve
guided, so you're nervous andyou're excited, or you're
afraid, but you have that peace, you know, you have that peace,
that comes from within so thatno matter what happens, This is
what I'm supposed to do.
This is what I'm supposed to do.
Gianna Diggs (12:55):
Hmm.
I love that inner peace, and Ithink, I'm glad you said that
because a lot of times we don'tlisten for that.
And we or we ignore it and.
You know, having thatunderstanding of like, okay, I
don't know what's gonna happen.
And, and I think trust too iswhat kind of just came to me, is
(13:18):
trusting that it's, it's gonnabe okay.
And, you know, I'm so scared toput this out there and do these
things, but I trust thateverything's gonna work in my
highest, for my highest good.
Yolanda Spearman (13:30):
right.
Exactly.
Exactly.
Yeah.
And it is scary.
Like you're doing something new.
you may be doing something newfor the first time, but.
I think someone said you'll knowthat you found your passion.
When you know you do something, even if no one pays you for it.
Now, obviously as entrepreneurs,we wanna get paid, you know, for
what we do.
It's that drive.
(13:50):
I think it speaks more to thatdrive that's within you.
Um, that you're doing it.
You know what, regardless of ifthe pay is 5 million or$5, of
course, you know, like I said,we want the pay, but that's not
what's motivating you.
It's that purpose and that drivethat's within you that's
motivating you.
Gianna Diggs (14:08):
Mm-hmm.
Yeah.
That's important too because, you know, nowadays all the, you,
all you see is you can make thisin your sleep and you should do
this, and this is gonna make youall the money.
But I'm always like, okay, that's great, but in five years
are you gonna be happy thatyou're doing that?
Yolanda Spearman (14:23):
Exactly right.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Gianna Diggs (14:26):
Because it,
because the money, does it
matter anymore after a certainamount of time?
Yolanda Spearman (14:31):
yeah, there, I
don't think there's anything
that can compare to peace,right.
Um, to making sure that you arementally and emotionally okay.
So, yeah.
Gianna Diggs (14:43):
All right.
So once you've created clarityfor your business or your life,
right, how do you make sure thatit lasts?
Yolanda Spearman (14:50):
Sure.
So I think, that whether you'refinding clarity, creating
clarity, it's evolving.
So it's not once you say, okay,I'm going to have this
particular business, that's it,it evolves in, how you're going
to go about doing the businessand maybe what worked for doing
the business.
Today is not what's going towork for doing the business next
(15:13):
year and what works for doingthe business next year is not
gonna work for running thebusiness in 20 years.
So just making sure thatwhatever you're doing, it still
aligns with your vision ofclarity.
But being open to trying newavenues, you know, I was just
thinking there's more than oneway to get to Texas from
Chicago.
You can, and I am not about totell you how, how to get there,
(15:35):
which road to take, anythinglike that.
I should have probably Googledthat.
But there's more than one way toget to a destination.
So if the first destinationworks for you or the first way
works for you in this area andyou're trying it again and it
doesn't work, just say, Hey, youknow what, there's another way
that I can go.
So just being open.
But again, just making sure thatwhatever it is, that it is,
(15:57):
aligning with your clarity thatyou, you know, said from the
get-go.
Gianna Diggs (16:02):
Hmm.
I like, I like that.
Make sure it aligns with yourclarity.
That's cool.
So what advice would you give toa mom, entrepreneur who is
really struggling to maintain, clarity in her life, in her
business?
Yolanda Spearman (16:15):
Sure.
So I would say, don't allow fearto hold you back.
Um, do it even while you'refeeling afraid, because fear
it's a natural human feeling,right?
It's so do it even when you'reafraid, because you.
You will miss out on so manythings that, it's for you to
(16:35):
have if you're not doing itsimply because you're allowing
fear to hold you back from doingit.
Unlearn some things you'velearned, like those things that
we learned as when we wereyounger.
That have stayed with us and, that have unfortunately planned
out in negative thoughts and,and negative behaviors and I
(16:55):
can't do it and I'm not goodenough.
And all of those things justunlearn those things and when
they come back, just put a d n Ron it.
Like, don't rest, don't, do notresuscitate it.
Just keep it there and don'tallow it to impede on the
progress or the clarity that youhave.
I also.
Think that you need to believethat you're capable.
(17:16):
And that goes back withunlearning the things that
you've learned.
So believing that you'recapable, write the vision, and
then get your tribe.
And your tribe can consist ofwhomever you trust enough to
allow into your inner sanctum, cause you can't let everyone
know your heart or your vision, anything like that.
But there are those who are inyour life, whether they're blood
(17:38):
related, whether they're acoworker, whatever the case may
be, get your tribe becausethey're the ones that's going to
help you, on this journey of notonly, maintaining your clarity
for yourself, but maintainingclarity, for the business and
making sure that you are goingthe right way that you need to
go, and then extending grace toyourself.
We can be some of the, we canreally be down on ourselves,
(18:01):
like we can extend grace toeveryone under the sun, but when
it comes to ourselves, we don'textend that same grace.
So I would just, definitelyadvise, the entrepreneurs out
there to extend to yourself thesame grace that you would extend
to someone else.
Gianna Diggs (18:16):
Mm.
I love all that you said becauseI'm like, that's true.
That's, oh, that's definitelytrue.
Especially that last one with,,extending yourself grace,
because, you know, I had amoment recently of, oh, I didn't
get this thing done, or Ididn't, in my perfectionism, I
didn't get something submittedthat I wanted.
Right.
(18:36):
And.
And the extent of myself, grace,I just realized, well, it's just
time to pivot and do itdifferently than what I wanted
to do.
But that comes with all theother steps that you said before
that.
And so I'm glad that, that thatwas the advice that you gave and
I hope that that helps someoneout there.
So, Yolanda, before we go, andwrap up, can you please let
(18:58):
everyone know where they canfind you online?
Yolanda Spearman (19:01):
Sure.
So I am on Facebook andInstagram, Yolanda y Spearman.
And it's y o l a n d a y s p e ar m a n.
That's website.
That's Facebook, and that'sInstagram.
