Speaker 1 (00:03):
Hello and welcome to the Erin Patterson podcast.
My name is Lisa Tate, I'm ajournalist with an insider
perspective on thiscontroversial case, and today I
have with me my friend andpodcast studio owner, louise
Wilkinson.
Hello, louise.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Hey Lisa.
So here I am.
It's a random Tuesday here atthe podcast studio and you've
burst in the door with animportant update.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
Yes, I did.
I apologise for my terriblemanners.
So Erin Patterson pleaded notguilty to all eight charges and,
as a consequence of that, thecase is now being fast-tracked
to Melbourne and, as aconsequence of that, the case is
now being fast-tracked toMelbourne.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Wow, that is a turn-up for the books today.
You were quite right to youknow, bust into the podcast.
You gave us an important update.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
Yes, because last time she appeared in court in
April, there was debate aboutwhere the case was going to be
held.
She said she wanted somethinglocal, but now it's going to the
Supreme Court with those pleasof not guilty, right, okay, so
the state made some changes tothe charges in terms of a couple
of locations.

(01:13):
I'm going to actually get thosedetails, so they're 100%
correct, and put it on ourwebsite, erinpattersoncomau.
But as well as that, she wasbefore Magistrate Tim Walsh and
I mentioned this previously.
He said the state's material isquote extremely voluminous.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
Meaning for those of us who aren't English scholars.
There is a lot.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
There's a lot.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
Right.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
Okay, so Erin Patterson has also elected not
to have a committal and, as Isaid before, that means it will
be in the supreme court ofvictoria and it will be on the
23rd this year, and that's justto mention, though that's not a
trial or anything like that.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
so okay, wow, all right.
So fair bit of work to do fromboth sides of the legal teams.
I would say yes, definitely.

Speaker 1 (02:09):
So she's remanded in custody and I did see her.
She was in a blue fleece jumperand she just had her hair back
glasses on and, as I said, verystoic.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Okay.

Speaker 1 (02:23):
And when she was asked she had to plea to each of
the eight charges as well.
And it's such a significantmatter that I think the only
place it could have gone to wasMelbourne.
But when the magistrate readout all of these charges, she
said quote not guilty, yourHonour eight separate times.
The magistrate also said he's aquote, very significant matter.

(02:48):
And he said this isn't acriticism of anyone but it had
dragged out a bit due to herbarrister's availability.
But it is a serious case, hesaid.
So you do need senior counseldefending you.

Speaker 2 (03:03):
Okay, so tell me a little bit more about the senior
counsel situation there.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
Okay, so according to the magistrate, this most
serious case demands seniorcounsel, in his view.
That's just his opinion and itwas not the kind that could be
passed over to another barristeron short notice, given it has a
quote my favourite word anextremely voluminous brief.
That's what Tim Walsh told thecourt.

Speaker 2 (03:30):
Right, he likes that word, doesn't he?
Voluminous.
I like it too, me too.
I think it paints the pictureperfectly.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
So on the video link you could see Ms Patterson's
three-person legal team and theydialed in as well, along with
many other people, and they'rewaiting for the charge sheet to
come from the police.
It's not out yet to myknowledge, but, as I said, I
will make sure that's up onerinpattersoncomau so we can get

(04:01):
all the information I want tomake sure, Louise, it's just
correct.

Speaker 2 (04:04):
Sure absolutely.

Speaker 1 (04:06):
So things are going to go really quiet now.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
Wow, that's going to be difficult for us.

Speaker 1 (04:11):
Yes.

Speaker 2 (04:12):
We love having a chat .

Speaker 1 (04:13):
We do love having a chat.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
This is a very serious chat though it certainly
is, and, yeah, I guess this iskind of a bit of a watershed day
.

Speaker 1 (04:21):
Yes, well, she's entered her pleas and also I
want people to know, say thisall the time but she has the
right to a fair trial and thepresumption of innocence.
Fair enough.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
Yeah, because, yeah, that is an important point and
one that everybody has the rightto.

Speaker 1 (04:41):
Yes, in Australia.
Now, I just wanted to explainas well.
Erin's case is in a differentstate to us, so we're in New
South Wales, Australia, and sheis in Victoria, which is south
of us.
Yes, the legal systems areactually quite different.
I've noticed Very different, even though it's from state to

(05:02):
state.
So basically, today most of usgot online 9.30, the scheduled
time and more joined the videolink, waiting for access to the
room.
We all know what that's like, don't we?

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Absolutely.

Speaker 1 (05:16):
It was mostly media and a few anonymous observers.
So at 9.39, the video came tolife, proffering a view of the
magistrate's bench, and that'swhat we looked at for 20 minutes
until court started at 10am.
Meanwhile I wrote here.
I was trying to mute every appon my two devices and it wasn't

(05:37):
easy because it's Apple.

Speaker 2 (05:39):
Absolutely, and you're an extremely popular
woman, so your devices are goingoff left and right.

Speaker 1 (05:45):
So at 10am we first saw Erin.
Oh, okay, so she's appeared.

Speaker 2 (05:49):
Yes.

Speaker 1 (05:50):
Blue fleece jumper, as I said, talking to someone
off to the side, hands crossedin her lap and wearing glasses,
and then she was asked by themagistrate can you hear me?
She said, yes, I can thank you.
Now La Trobe Magistrate's Court.
It's a very busy court, butit's a smaller one compared to
the Supreme Court, as I'm sureyou understand, louise.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
Of course, yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:12):
And we are thousands of kilometres away.
It's amazing that we can justhop on in and watch the
proceedings.
Absolutely, it's really reallygood.
So, louise, that's what I havetoday.
I'm going to leave you alonefor once.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
I'm going to miss you .
I'll be back.
I know you'll be back, but yeah, wow, so we've got to wait.
Yes, oh, geez, okay.
So I'm quite invested now.
Yes, I imagine you'll be back, but yeah, wow, so we've got to
wait.
Yes, oh, geez, okay, so I'mquite invested now?

Speaker 1 (06:41):

Speaker 1 (07:13):
