Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello, hello, kasey here.
So once a year I do a digitaltrends and predictions podcast,
and this will actually be thethird year that I've done this.
Man, can you believe that?
Been around for three years, wehave 156 episodes.
Oh man, time has flown by.

(00:21):
But the most popular episodethat I have each and every year
is this one, because it's kindof like my superpower,
predicting what the trend isgoing to be, predicting what the
industry is going to do.
So stay tuned after the introand we are going to dive right
into this.
As natural creatives, we loveour projects, we love our craft

(00:44):
time and we'll never say no to aquick trip to Michael's.
Although running a handmadebusiness is rewarding, it can
also be overwhelming.
Hey, creative mamas Kasey here, and as a mother of two feisty
toddlers and a business ownermyself, I get the nap time
hustle and live it daily.
Managing the house, jugglingthe kids and getting those

(01:05):
orders out on time can train thelife right out of us.
But what if there was a way toconvert that business of yours
into an online passive incomegenerating machine?
Well, I'm here to tell you it'snot only possible, but
completely yours for the taking.
I'm on a mission to give all ofthe naptime hustling crafty
moms out there the right tools, systems and strategies needed to

(01:29):
convert your own businessesinto consistent yet flexible
income online, all while doingwhat you do best creating.
So put those kiddos down fortheir nap, pop in some earbuds
and kick back.
This is where you stop tradingtime for dollars.
This is where you claim yourlife back.
This is the Naptime Hustlepodcast.

(01:50):
Okay, so let's go over digitaldownloads and product trends of
2023 and beyond, and I'm alsogoing to share which I really
haven't done too much on how tostay on top of design trends
when you are in the space ofdesigning digital files, digital

(02:13):
downloads, especially the onesbeing sold on Etsy, because I
think that this is really goingto help you.
Okay, so first, one thing that Ihave seen is Etsy making
changes.
They have added thesecategories, the craft machine
categories.
I've talked about this.
I did that episode back inAugust last summer, talking

(02:37):
about how this was a hugeindicator to us digital sellers
that craft machines, digitalfiles, digital downloads for
these craft machines are gainingmomentum.
Etsy needs a place to put them,so they have actually
structured them into theirplatform, their skeleton, and

(02:59):
are making changes toaccommodate them, because now
you look over on e-Rank and onthese sites that tie into the
Etsy database and we are seeinga lot of sales.
A lot of people are buying fromthese digital sellers.
The top shop selling on Etsy isusually a digital download shop

(03:24):
.
So it's like crazy how muchthese Etsy shops are earning
that are selling digitaldownloads.
So Etsy has been making changes.
That is a huge indicator to usthat this isn't going anywhere.
Digital files, especially forthese craft machines, are going
to be around for years to come.

(03:44):
Also seen along with this areadvancements in printing.
These craft machines are comingup with new ways to create more
complex projects.
They are printing.
You know, soon, I think, thatwe will have a direct print to

(04:06):
garment or print to shirt rightin each of our homes.
Right now we're at the stage ofwhere you can print on this
paper, do like sublimation andin the screen printing, and it's
pretty simple to apply ourdesigns to a t-shirt just using
an at-home printer, right.
So this is one area that we'veseen really take off this year.

(04:29):
That's why we're seeing morewatercolor designs.
We're seeing more complexgraphics on shirts.
We're seeing less of just likethe cutout heat transfer vinyl,
you know, I mean, we still seethat, but we're seeing this
shift.
We're seeing more complex, likeI said, graphics on t-shirts

(04:54):
now.
Now I know what many of you arethinking, casey, you have
mentioned that you're coming outwith a sublimation training on
teaching us how to do just this, how to create more complex
graphics, how to create graphicsthat use like photos and
watercolors.
Yes, that training is coming, and the reason that it's taking

(05:19):
me a little bit longer isbecause I want to make sure that
it is ready for you guys, andI'm still fine tuning my process
.
I've learned the hard way thatrolling out a course or a
training that isn't ready.
I did that once before and Idon't want to do it again, and I
just want this to be ready foryou guys, so it is taking a
little bit longer.
This is a area that also youknow.

(05:44):
One design style that I'll goover in a second is watercolor
and more of these paintingstyles of designs that are going
on to again, those shirts andthe decor in homes, the wall
decor and, like the cute countryframes.

(06:05):
What I'm seeing and this is adesign trend that you want to
make note of is more of these, like walking into Hobby Lobby
and these stores where mycustomers hang out, where they
buy from, I'm seeing a lot likeof watercolor.
I'm seeing a lot of watercolor,of painting style, of graphics,

(06:29):
and the problem with teachingthis is it's hard to take
somebody through this processwho has never painted before or
who doesn't have a background inalready designing before, or
who doesn't have a background inalready designing.
And, as you guys know, my wholething is taking crafters and

(06:54):
handmade artists who are used tocreating and building things
with their hands, people who arenot.
You know, some, many of you arenot painters, many of you are
not calligraphers.
So one thing that I'm runninginto and I'm trying to figure
out as well, is how to teach youhow to create these high
quality watercolor paintings andgraphics and images.

(07:15):
So one thing that I'm workingthrough and that I'm going to be
putting into this course is howto create these realistic
watercolor style paintings andnot have to know how to paint,
not have to have a previousexperience doing these things,

(07:38):
and so I think that, for thoseof you who are interested in
designing like this, photoshopis going to be your friend.
I'm going to be teaching thiscourse inside Photoshop and
teaching you how to leveragegraphics that are already there,

(07:59):
that have already been created, even like images, and how to
turn them into a beautifulwatercolor painting.
You know, quote unquotepainting, not a true painting,
but you get what I mean.
So that is one trend and oneshift and one area that I am

(08:22):
catching up with, and I'll bejust completely transparent
about that.
I want you guys to know, likethe reasoning that this is
taking longer, but also what I'mgoing through as far as, like
teaching it and the complexitiesthat I'm running into trying to
provide the best trainingpossible that will meet your
needs, and so we are seeing this.

(08:45):
I think that that training isgoing to be really helpful for
you guys.
If you want to get on thatwaitlist, go to pinandposhcom
forward slash sublimation andyou'll be added to the waitlist
for that course when it doescome out.
So go to pinandposhcom forwardslash sublimation and I will

(09:06):
send you a freebie, a downloadthat shares with you the
different types of sublimationsthat we are seeing on the market
that are the biggest trends.
If you want to go ahead andstart doing your own research
and seeing that this is an areathat you're interested in, this
should help.
That download will help, andthen you'll also be added to the

(09:29):
waitlist so you'll be the firstto be notified when the
training comes out this springspring of 2023.
Okay, so, getting back intothis, so we're seeing more ways,
more complex designs that arebeing printed Again, watercolor,
huge.
I will also link to and PS alsoin that download is going to be

(09:57):
images of the trends and allthat I'm seeing as far as those
watercolor graphics and thatsublimation and all of the
trends that I'm seeing.
That will be big this year.
Another style that we are seeingis like the boho style,
especially for at-home decor.
Boho is so, so cute.

(10:18):
I actually love this style andthat is impacting the designs
that we create as SVG designersand as digital download creators
as well.
You know those of you who areor have like your mock-up shops,
your images.
I think that some of thisinformation will be helpful to

(10:39):
you too, because maybe what youdo is start offering more you
know mock-up images, or maybeit's like wedding invitations.
You know this can apply to anyindustry, but you can start
using some of these styles andimplementing them into your
designs to stay with the trend,to stay on top of the

(11:01):
competition and start being astep ahead of the curve.
Now, one thing that I have seenalso are the arches are super
popular.
Again, I'm going to includeimages to all of these inside
the download that is linked toin the show notes.
But another one is, like youknow, rainbows have been big,

(11:26):
but then also like the rainbowtype of arches, like we're
seeing more of those like archmirrors and arch decor, like one
of the things that I saw on anin-cap at Hobby Lobby were like
the decals that go up on thewall and there was like three of
them and they were each thepopular like arches.
We see earrings, too.

(11:46):
Maybe you create SVG files thatare for earrings.
I have a pair of earrings andthey were like the very last
pair from the hair salon that Ibought them in and people love
them, and they were the lastpair because the rest had been
bought out, because people lovethem, and again, it's more of

(12:07):
like the rainbow looking arch.
It's not a rainbow, but I'mhaving a hard time describing it
without a visual, and so that'sanother trend that I see
continuing on into 2023.
Also, what we saw in 2022 thatI predicted in last year's

(12:29):
episode was more of like theretro vintage, like 80s groovy
style.
I still see some of thatcontinuing on in 2023, maybe
2024, we'll see.
But the two like biggest designstyles that I saw when I go on
my research shopping spree arethe watercolors it was like

(12:57):
watercolor overload in these bigbox retail stores and then also
the more not Aztec, but I'mgoing to say like Moroccan slash
geometric type of shapes arehuge, like you'll see wood
frames that are cut into thisshape.

(13:19):
You'll see these patterns likeeverywhere, and so that's really
big right now.
That's going to continue to bebig in 2023 as well.
I think that I mean I'mobsessed with it.
Like, even right now I'mlooking on Hobby Lobby's site
like whitewash geometric windowframe, geometric cutout, like.

(13:40):
Go and search and you'll findall of these really cute
different wall decors.
But what you should be payingattention to is the pattern.
Can you apply the same pattern, maybe to the background of your
invitations?
Maybe you grab some of the samedecor and use it in your

(14:03):
mock-up images?
These are some ways that, eventhough you may not be an SVG
seller like I know many of youare, but for those of you who
aren't, there's still ways toincorporate the same trend.
That is really big right now,and I think that when you do,
you're going to see an increasein sales.

(14:24):
You're going to see peopleflock to you and to your designs
because they are cutting edgeright, and so watercolors,
geometric type of shapes, thoseare like my two big ones.
And so for the SVG creators,we're going to continue to see
an increase in the complexityand specifically the

(14:48):
multi-layered SVG files forlaser machines.
So this was like the bigbreakaway this past year that I
predicted in last year's episode, and it's continuing on.
So Glowforge saw a massiveincrease in sales this past year
.
They got their machine into thehands of at-home creators.

(15:13):
It was in Michaels, joann's, itwas in Michaels for a period at
my local Michaels, but theyended up taking it out and just
keeping it online because theprice point is still a little
bit steep for the crafters, andso that makes sense.
But I predict that this pricewill come down, especially as

(15:38):
new cutting machines enter themarket to compete with Glowforge
.
They've been dominating it.
You know their price point islike what?
$3,000, $4,000 right now, andthough many people, you know
this is on their wishlist andthey want to get their hands on
one and get it into their homes.
I think that as the price doescome down through the years,

(15:58):
we're going to see more and morepeople have these machines.
I think that we will see themgrow smaller Well, not grow
smaller, because that'simpossible, but I think that
we'll see some that eventuallywill be made into a smaller size
because of the Glowforge's size, and that's one thing that
people don't like about them isthat like how huge they are, and

(16:21):
so I could see there beingeither Glowforge or a competitor
who comes out with a smallermodel that is easier to fit in a
craft room and at-home craftroom.
But as far as like the products,we've seen a lot of wood
products come out, even inMichaels and Hobby Lobby and

(16:41):
these craft stores that are madewith Glowforge, and I think
it's interesting because youknow people can just make these
themselves.
But you see these retailers, they kind of ride that same wave
, so they get more suppliers whoare able to create, you know,
wood projects Like I just walkedpast one.

(17:03):
It was very cool.
It was just a blank, like Imean pretty much piece of board
that sits by your door that youcan put a plant in the bottom
and that you can put like yourhouse numbers on, made with a
glow forge or similar cuttingmachine, right, and they just

(17:26):
left it blank for the people tocustomize and make themselves.
Now there's a lot of other justlike unfinished projects,
unfinished wood projects that Isaw on the main aisle.
That's important I'll go overthat later on why I said it like
that but on the main aisle ofMichael's, where I mean just

(17:48):
several of their products werecreated or could have been
created using a Glowforge, andso I thought that that was
interesting, that they are evenselling like the base of what
the Glowforge creators areselling.
And so as we see these printingmachines, these craft machines

(18:08):
come out and the technologychange and improve, we also see
the retailers adjusting andadding their own product lines
of the same thing, because it'sthe trend, because now more
people are able to create it,more people see it.
There's more exposure out therefor this kind of product, for

(18:29):
these unfinished wood products.
There's more of the wood tags, the, the leather tags right now
and customizing those Like lastChristmas we saw so many of the
wood decor for Christmas treesright and the wood tags.
So as we see this technologyimprove, so we also see the

(18:51):
consumers and that side of itabsorb into this and start
wanting more and more, becausethey've seen this product over
here and want something similaror they want something.
You know that is a bitdifferent, but that is what gave
them the idea.
So, anyways, I think that we'regoing to continue to just see
this area evolve, like I hadpredicted last year.

(19:14):
With the 3D type of SVGs thosehave exploded.
We are also seeing more of aneed and this is for the SVG
sellers too of proven SVG files.
What do I mean by that?
I mean testing out your filesso that they work, and you know

(19:34):
that they work, and that iswhat's speaking to customers now
.
So we saw this influx of SVGsellers, but many of them.
We're also seeing more of aneed in proven SVG files.

(19:54):
So we saw before just anincrease of SVG sellers right on
Etsy.
But what we're now seeing inthose SVG sellers is that many
of them don't know how to createreliable SVGs, or ones that

(20:15):
have created SVGs that haven'ttested their SVGs, and so the
buyers are smart.
Svgs that haven't tested theirSVGs, and so the buyers are
smart.
The customers see this and theyare showing that they prefer to
buy SVGs from sellers who havetested the file, because they're
getting sick of buying SVGfiles that aren't tested.
And so if you're looking for away to set yourself apart as an

(20:39):
SVG seller on Etsy in 2023, Ireally really encourage this one
.
Am I going to do it myself?
Probably not.
I'm still working on that part.
I'm still working on figuringout how to do this with a team.
I am working on gettingsomebody in-house to do the

(20:59):
crafting part.
I have a friend we did a littletest run of like a side
business selling those Christmasdecorations this past year, and
so it's in the works.
And one thing that I want to dois have SVG files that I've
taken pictures of that we'vealready cut out, just to show to

(21:22):
our customer base that this isproven.
And, honestly, in the end,we'll probably increase the
amount that we sell our SVGs forbecause they are proven,
because we have already cut themout and shown that they are
reliable.
So that is one thing, that oneum one change that I hope to

(21:42):
make in 2023.
And if you're looking for a way,you know I don't want to keep
all of this to myself, like Iwant to share what I'm doing so
that you guys can be improvingyour businesses.
I want to show you what I'mseeing and the the stats and
research that that I'm findingand so I want to share.
Even though this is somethingbrand new that I'm trying out, I

(22:05):
want to still share it with youbecause I think this is what is
going to speak to a lot ofpeople and help increase sales
and set you apart from thecompetition, just like I foresee
it doing for us.
If you hear, like a chainsaw orsomething, there's somebody
right outside my door.
I don't know what they're doing, but I apologize for the

(22:27):
background noise.
Okay, so back to 3D designs.
I think that 3D is going tocontinue to take off.
Now there's off, now there's.
You know 3D as in multi-layerdesigns, especially designs on
like Glowforge yes, I see I haveseen an increase in those and

(22:55):
more people wanting that type ofSVG Again.
Why?
Proven SVGs for those type ofdesigns are especially important
.
But I want to talk more aboutthe 3D printers and 3D designing
softwares that are coming out.
So this past year and I shouldpreface this I've talked a lot

(23:16):
about this already insideDigital Crafting Insiders.
That is the premium privategroup for each of my paying
students inside my premiumcourses.
I've talked a lot about thisalready, so if you've heard this
, you're already aware.
But 3D design is just nowstarting to gain some traction.

(23:37):
We have this 3D printer marketout there, the 3D printers are
still a lot, but I project thatin the next five I would say I
mean, this is tough, but I wouldsay five for sure, 10 years
that this is going to take placeat a more consumer level,

(24:04):
inside the at-home crafter homeor office, that we're going to
see 3D printers get into thehands of us, of creators, and be
used to create items that canbe sold on Etsy.
That really will take justcustomization to the next level.

(24:28):
Now, right along with that,we're seeing, like I said, adobe
, who came out with a softwarewhere you can design on the VR,
a software where you can designon the VR, so the virtual
reality, like gaming consoles, where you hold, you know you

(24:48):
have the goggles on and you holdthe remotes in your hands and
it senses where your hands are.
Well, they've started creatinggraphic design software that you
can use on these devices and soyou're actually, it feels like
you're actually there in person, like sculpting a statue or

(25:09):
painting.
Isn't that crazy.
Like okay, this is going to bemy geek out episode.
I just think that that is socool.
Like as a graphic designer and adigital seller, someday we're
going to be able to sculpt withour hands or paint with our
hands, but it's going to bevirtual, just like we do on the

(25:31):
computer.
You know, this is digital, butnow we're going to feel like we
are there in person.
If we want to get closer to it,we can.
We'll actually be like usingour hand to do the brush strokes
.
They will have differentbrushes that you can use.
You can actually create astatue, a I don't know.

(25:53):
Like I'm sure that there's likeso many other things that we'll
be able to create, but we'll beable to create a 360 3D item in
the software.
We'll be able to walk around it, we'll be able to mold it,
we'll be able to transform it sothat we can export it to these

(26:14):
3D printers and it actually cometo life, like in the form of a
plastic sculpture.
And I even see and this is likereally going out further in the
future with these 3D printers.
I don't think it's just goingto be and you know, I haven't

(26:36):
done any research on this.
So it might.
There might even be somematerial out there that you can
create and print out on a 3Dprinter.
That isn't like plastic, whatI've seen, but I think that
someday we'll be able to printat home like clay pottery or

(26:57):
little statues that, like youcan go to the store and grab,
but instead we will be able tocreate those right at home with
a 3D printer and that thematerials are.
It's not going to just belimited to the plastics, it's
going to also be clay pottery.

(27:18):
Um, clay pottery it's alsogoing to be just like these
different 3D materials that canbe built up, printed.
So I think it's going to get tothe point where you know, we
can actually print out these, you know, clay sculptures, these
3D files that we create eitheron our computer or on the VR,

(27:41):
that we're actually going toprint them out on different
materials.
So really really cool, likehonestly, I wish that we were
already there, because this getsme like really excited, okay.
So moving on, Okay, and justone additional side note to
these craft machines.

(28:02):
We have seen the process of likeuploading your own custom file
to Cricut, to Silhouette, toGlowforge.
I think that this is going totake off more across different
industries, across differenttype of machines.
I think embroidery is one thatwe're starting to see more of.
That we will see more of justthe potential to upload your own

(28:27):
graphics that you create athome on a graphic design
software, like in that four coreworkshop that I did, and in
that training I did a very basictraining on how to create these
type of very basic files.
It's going to be something thatI'm going to continue to

(28:47):
investigate and look after and,as the you know, right now
there's some technology barriersthat we're hitting.
But as those barriers come downand as designers are able to
produce more universally acrossthese, you know, for instance,
across these machines, I thinkthat that will be another

(29:09):
industry that picks up, whetherit be those embroidery files,
maybe it is going to be like thecrochet or knit files, and as
these machines continue to rollout or update their systems and
improve their technologies, I'llbe sure to let you guys know as
I find out about them as well.
So be sure to hit subscribe, ifyou haven't already, because I

(29:33):
think that this is somethingthat you're going to want to
stay on top of.
That will benefit each of us.
Okay, you guys.
So I had a lot more that Iwanted to go over for this
week's episode.
I just decided to split this upinto a part one and part two.
So part two, in next week'sepisode, I'm going to go over

(29:56):
how to stay on top of trends, how to stay ahead of your
competition.
This is so, so important, because when we are able to be
the first to sell an item, itmakes our business and the sales
that we make come so mucheasier.
So it's really important toknow how to do this.
I think that it's going to helpyou as a digital download

(30:18):
seller, as a digital designer.
So join me next week for parttwo of this episode and I'll
talk to you then.
Bye.
