In this week's episode, you get to hear me live in my Facebook group with my students as I go over a particular question asked by one of them named Sandy about layered keynote files.

Sandy has been selling these for years on her website and they sell like HOT CAKES…. but over on the Etsy side people are not searching for keynote templates and she is getting some crickets … so what do you do?

Speaker 1 (00:02):
As I was about to hit record on this episode, I
noticed that this is episode 159.
Nothing special about thenumber, but when I saw that, I
was just overwhelmed withappreciation for all of you.
And this podcast has just kindof been something that I really
didn't intend to grow much, beensomething that I really didn't

(00:28):
intend to grow much.
It was just something on theside that I decided to offer my
followers and my students tosupplement their need for
marketing advice and advice togrow and manage their businesses
, and so for us to still bedoing this in 2023.
On episode 159, I just wantedto say thank you.

(00:49):
Thank you for showing up eachweek and listening.
I haven't been super consistentas to like recording these and
getting them out every singleFriday.
We're kind of going through anadjustment phase in the business
and, as you all know, I'm amama and my first role in life
is my role as a mother, and sosometimes that doesn't always

(01:15):
work out perfectly and a resultof that is not getting the
podcast out every single Friday.
But I'm pushing through becauseI know eventually this season
will end.
Eventually I'll be able to showup consistently, and I
shouldn't say like I'm sure mygoal is showing up consistently
every single week and getting apodcast out Like as soon as I'm

(01:37):
able to.
It's just not happening at thesame time every single week
because my schedule isn't.
I'm just not in that season oflife where my schedule permits
that right now.
So thanks for your patience, thanks for showing up, thanks
for continuing to leave thosereviews and show your support by
listening or like, in leavingone of those reviews or however

(02:00):
you show your support.
I appreciate you and there'sreally nothing else I want to
say, just that.
So I wanted to start off withthat.
But the real reason why you'rehere I got this question from
one of my students.
We recorded this live in ourprivate community and I felt
like it was such a good questionand as I answered it and after

(02:25):
the conversation, like we got,we got our community involved,
people were asking questions.
That was really engaged and Iknow that this is a topic that
many of you listeners on thepodcast will appreciate.
So in this recording I go overSandy's shop and she is selling
keynote stickers and she'sfinding that when she searches

(02:49):
on Etsy that she for keynotelike this is she's the only shop
that's coming up.
Her listings are the onlylistings coming up, and so we
talk about you know why?
This is why you know you aren'tseeing the sales.
She's also not seeing the salesthat she would like to see, but
she's the only one coming up,and so it's like, oh, am I doing

(03:10):
a good job with my SEO?
It appears so, but why aren't Imaking any sales?
So we talk about producttransition.
If you have been in a space ofselling one product that used to
sell, or maybe, like in Sandy'scase, her people on our website

(03:30):
, her community, she has acommunity, she has, it sounds,
like a Facebook group and forher her people are buying, but
the Etsy audience and buyersaren't purchasing, they aren't
converting, and so why is this?
We go over all of this.
We go over so much in thisepisode, in this live, and I
also feed her some ideas as tohow to transition to maybe or

(03:55):
add a different product lineonto her existing product line,
using the data, like we go overEtsy.
If you're over on YouTube, wedidn't, I unfortunately, like
this was an audio only live, sowe don't have the video portion.
So sorry YouTubers, but I goover kind of what to do over on

(04:17):
the Etsy side and how to findtrending products.
So I think that this is goingto be probably one of a listener
favorite.
I would expect this to be alistener favorite after this,
because in this episode we giveaway lots of ideas and lots of
information, especially if youaren't seeing those sales come

(04:38):
in as you would like them to.
So hang tight.
After the intro, we'll go aheadand dive right in.
As natural creatives, we loveour projects, we love our craft
time and we'll never say no to aquick trip to Michael's.
Although running a handmadebusiness is rewarding, it can
also be overwhelming.
Hey, creative mamas Kasey here, and as a mother of two feisty

(05:00):
toddlers and a business ownermyself, I get the nap time
hustle and live it daily.
Toddlers and a business ownermyself I get the nap time hustle
and live it daily.
Managing the house, jugglingthe kids and getting those
orders out on time can train thelife right out of us.
But what if there was a way toconvert that business of yours
into an online passive incomegenerating machine?
Well, I'm here to tell you it'snot only possible, but

(05:21):
completely yours for the taking.
I'm on a mission to give all ofthe naptime hustling crafty
moms out there the right tools, systems and strategies needed to
convert your own businessesinto consistent yet flexible
income online, all while doingwhat you do best creating.
So put those kiddos down fortheir nap, pop in some earbuds

(05:43):
and kick back.
This is where you stop tradingtime for dollars.
This is where you claim yourlife back.
This is the Naptime HustlePodcast, hello, sandy.
Okay, I kept your questionsecond, sandy, because I love it
so much.
I think that this is a reallyimportant topic that I think the

(06:08):
majority of Etsy shop ownersstruggle with in the beginning,
and I don't want this to comeoff like I have some options for
you, so I might go in adirection that kind of makes you
feel well hopefully not makeyou feel like you did anything
wrong or that like you didanything wrong or that like you
chose a wrong product area, because it's not that I think

(06:30):
that you did.
I just don't.
I don't understand this niche, this particular niche, so
remember that as I go throughthis.
But Sandy says I have a categoryof products in my store keynote
, layered clip art, planner, stickers, vectors.
These can be edited, customized, mixed and matched.

(06:51):
I need some help with keywordsuggestions.
If you search keynote on Etsy, all my listings come up.
Is it just okay?
I really love that you're here.
So question on that, sandy isit just the word keynote that
when you search?
I mean, you said it, but I'mjust clarifying, making sure

(07:14):
it's just the word keynote.
Okay, she said in the chat I'vebeen making these since 2012 and
they sell like crazy on mywebsite.
Okay, yes, see, I didn't knowthat.
That's good info, but neversell well on Etsy.
Okay, I got some suggestions,so Etsy shoppers don't
understand what this product is.

(07:34):
Okay, first off, that's reallyexciting.
You've been selling these formany years and you have people
that are already buying them andbarely viewed.
So that's where I'm going tochallenge you a little bit.
She said that they've been inher shop since 2012.
Okay, so these are old productsthat you put up way back in the
day and you haven't updatedthem.

(07:56):
Is that correct?
I'm going to go over a coupledifferent ways to look at this,
because I receive a lot ofquestions around this and it's
such an important part to getright.
Yes, she says they are analternative to Photoshop.
Okay, what do you mean?
They're an alternative toPhotoshop?
Layered keynote files?
Oh, yeah, so pretty much theyare.

(08:19):
So I don't use keynote as muchI use PowerPoint.
But Keynote is a presentationsoftware and she said back to
her question here these can beedited, customized, mixed,
matched.
I need some help with keywordsuggestions.
If you search Keynote on Etsy, all my listings come up, but I

(08:41):
don't think anyone is searchingfor Keynote.
Any suggestions?
My community on Facebook andwebsite are very familiar with
using these because I have beenselling them since 2014,.
But I just don't know how topresent them to Etsy.
So, great question yourcommunity, your website, they

(09:02):
are buying them from you, sothat's good validation.
But this might be, and whereyou've been doing it for so long
, it might be a differentaudience than actually what's on
Etsy, and so I'm going to okay,so let's take a few steps back.
So for those of you who runinto this and this isn't my full

(09:23):
on like advice to you, sandy, but I want to say that for those
of you who are, you know, selling a product and you're
running into the same thing, where you go over to Etsy and
you start like you type in thissoftware or this type of file
that's made for this softwareand nothing's coming up but

(09:44):
yours that usually means thatyou're the only person selling
in that space, and not all thetime.
Sometimes you're like ahead ofthe curve.
You know you're ahead of thetrend and so you might just be
the first person there, but inthis case, it means that other
sellers haven't found this areato be a profitable area.

(10:08):
Now you put a different twiston it, sandy.
You are doing planner stickervectors that are clipart for the
keynote.
Is there a reason why you wentthat direction over?
Like keynote presentation, justlike a keynote, like the entire

(10:29):
presentation, or do you createand sell those too?
I'm curious.
Yes, oh, yes, sorry, sonia.
So Sonia just, or Sonia just, joined us and I am on a
different computer and today I'mjust doing audio.
So pop in those AirPods and sitback, grab a beverage and sit

(10:50):
back, because I'm not going toshare my screen today.
Ok, so Sandy said layeredkeynote files.
People can make stickers andscrapbook with these in keynote.
Oh, I see.
So their end product isscrapbooking in keynote.
Okay, she said I start outmaking digital planners and made

(11:11):
this way for my iPlanner usersto make stickers.
I made the first digitalplanner ever available, so I
would.
Okay.
When it comes to Etsy, I thinkthat you might be dealing with a
bit maybe more digitally savvyaudience that are using Keynote

(11:32):
in different ways or they areusing software similar to
Keynote, are using softwaresimilar to Keynote.
So what I was going to get atwas if you're running into the
same problem and people you knowyou're searching your product
and you're like the only onecoming up, that's validation.
Usually I should say usually, not all cases usually that's

(11:54):
validation that there's notpeople, others, who have found
this to be a profitable area.
And so in EDS, this is like whythe pre-launch phase is so
important in Etsy, digitalSuccess, my course and this lays
the groundwork and is built tohelp not only generate product
ideas but align with the four Psthat I go over.

(12:20):
So when you choose a product, you want to make sure that it's
an area from an area that you'reproficient in, you're
knowledgeable in or you're goodat that.
It's a passion area, somethingthat you enjoy.
You don't have to like full onlove it, because you can always
tweak it later on.
Maybe it's not stickers, butmaybe it's something related
close to it.
And then the third P problemDoes your product answer a

(12:44):
problem that you are seeing?
Does it give people a solution?
And this can be pretty simple.
Like you know, I'm not seeingthis in the market and I noticed
people in my audience arewanting, you know, stickers
maybe it is stickers for keynotepresentations and you see a
pattern with that.
You know, if you have acommunity, if you have followers

(13:07):
, like this is where you picktheir brain and just kind of
watch and just roam through yourFacebook group and see what
what people are talking aboutand watch them.
And this is where you followother designers too and just
kind of watch the trend.
Watch what people are askingfor in these groups is like a

(13:28):
great, great place to grab andmake sure that you find a
product that answers the problemright.
And then, once you havenarrowed it down from that point
in EDS, I pull you over to Etsy.
So it sounds like you know youchecked off at least two of
these and it sounds like youknow you're proficient, like in

(13:49):
this.
This is an area that you'reknowledgeable in, but then also
it's a.
It sounds like a passion area, like you've been with it for so
many years.
It's a.
It sounds like a passion area, like you've been with it for so
many years, but have we done theresearch to see if it is an
area that is answering a problem, when when you are giving
people something that theyaren't finding very well and

(14:11):
that they're needing and thiscould be.
It doesn't have to be like afor sure, like product.
It could also be a design style.
You know I use the teacherexample a lot, but maybe it is.
You know you're designingproducts or SVGs or whatever for
teachers who, throughout theyear, they need items for their

(14:35):
classroom.
They need affordable.
You know cutouts and die cutsand you know whatever it is for
their classroom.
They need affordable.
You know cutouts and die cutsand you know whatever it is for
their classroom and they don'twant to go to.
You know they don't want tohave to constantly be searching
it.
So you create it for them, youprovide it to them.
That's an example of answeringa problem that you see on the
market and then over on Etsy.
This is what I would encourageyou to do, sandy, is go over on

(14:59):
Etsy and start typing in K Well, just the letter K into the
search bar, since your mainkeyword is keynote and that's
the software that you'recreating in.
Start typing in keynote and youtake a pause after each letter
that you enter into the searchbar.

(15:19):
So K, look at what's returningin that dropdown menu on the
search bar, and then E, are youseeing Keynote?
You know, after you type in K,e, no spaces, and then by the
word key, if you are not seeingkeynote pop up, it's probably
not a hugely searched area orproduct.

(15:43):
Now you can start typing in,you know the entire word keynote
and there will be products thatreturn there and, yeah, you
could try to sell like some ofthose product ideas.
Try to sell like some of thoseproduct ideas, but usually, if

(16:04):
it's not already popping up by,at least like the word key,
k-e-y, no space, just K-E-Y.
And then, like I said, thatsoftware is not popping up you
might be wanting to look intoand this is, you know, and this
is where I'm like, don't I?

(16:26):
I know that this could mean alot of work for you, but I've
I've been brainstorming this.
Like what could I offer her Ifthe the research that you're
finding after what I'veexplained, if you're not seeing
it and seeing that validationproof?
Because anything in that searchbar is what people are
searching on Etsy and usuallystarting on Etsy.
I encourage people to go afterthose products that show up

(16:46):
right in that search bar.
There's other tools that I gointo in EDS and we dive a bit
deeper into SEO.
In there New trainings arecoming out, fyi.
But for this, you know, sinceyou already have this like big
inventory and it's all keynotefocused or that's the format of

(17:07):
it, would there be another areathat you could easily like
either export to or use AdobeIllustrator to export to?
That would be a new productarea such as maybe it's
PowerPoint.
You know, one thing that I'mtyping in and looking at on Etsy
is presentations, becausethere's a lot more presentations

(17:32):
that are needed online, likenow especially, there's a lot
more people working online, especially after COVID, and
that's part of the reason.
I think, like Canva has takenoff and you type in you know
even me saying that typing inlike presentation into the Etsy

(17:52):
search bar, you guys can't seeit.
Like I said, this is all audiotoday, but when you type in
presentation to Etsy in thesearch bar, you see presentation
, powerpoint, presentationtemplate, canva.
So those are two softwares thatyou might want to look into,

(18:12):
since there's some proof therethat people are buying at least
the presentations.
Now I don't know very muchabout like the presentation
stickers.
But and I'm not seeingpresentation stickers pull up,
but I do see presentation slides, presentation cards,
presentation book, presentationbox, presentation deck,

(18:35):
presentation board, presentationtemplate is like the first one.
Now you could also go and starttyping in like presentation
space and then see if anythingelse pops up.
But I would say maybe you canuse some of your design assets
that you've already created andmaybe just tweak them a little
bit to be something differentover on the Etsy side to the

(18:59):
Etsy audience, or maybe it'ssomething that you know you
create on your website and youknow maybe you pitch it to your
audience and see if it takeshold.
You know, do some test freebieslike test, like freebies
offering new products as afreebie and seeing if people
like that and actually likesubscribe that are in your

(19:22):
audience already.
Now there's going to be a bitof a conversion that needs to
happen there, right, since youraudience is a keynote audience,
you know you're probably onlygoing to get so.
This is what my business mentortold me back in the day and
it's true.
Like when you change areas, ifit's like a completely new area,
usually like about 20% is whatwe see convert over to this new

(19:45):
area, so in your currentaudience, but where this is
something that you could, youknow, kind of ride, even like
the Canva wave, I think, likewith your background and keynote
, maybe Canva is a new optionthat you want to start testing
in the waters with offering toyour, to your people, and kind

(20:07):
of riding that trend with Canva, because a lot of people are
flocking to Canva a lot.
It's free, it's affordable andyou could start maybe even like
offer a training, once you learnit, to people, and that's
another little thing.
And then, after your training, you know that would require you
to get like on live and showthem like into your community.

(20:30):
This is what I would do.
This is if I were you.
I would get into your community, see if people are interested
in using a tool like Canva whichI assume people are because
it's like everywhere and see ifyou could, you know, spend a few
weeks learning it and then givethem an intro into it.
And then, after that point, canva, like their templates I've

(20:55):
just been seeing do really welland the sellers there do really
well, and so you could teachthem how to create.
Or you can, after that point, tell them or sell them graphics
on Etsy that could be used inCanva.
So that was one idea that I hadwas like, maybe you could like
offer something similar, butjust in a couple of different

(21:17):
softwares or in a coupledifferent formats.
Let me read what you're sayinghere.
Sarah said her shop is so cute.
I'm sure no one is searching ormaking keynote sticker shapes,
because when I search them onEtsy, all my products show up
but no others.
It gives the solution forpeople to make their own digital
or printable stickers.

(21:38):
I took keynote out of theboardroom back in 2010.
My community loves them becausethey understand what they are.
Okay, there was no area 12years ago I started it.
There weren't even digitalplanners.
Back then, my iPlanner was thefirst digital planner available.
Oh cool, I can convert them allinto Canva files or SVGs.

(22:01):
There you go.
That's a great idea.
Canva files I think offeringthose in the right, you know,
and that's something I haven'tlooked into is like how to
upload.
I mean, I know how to upload mygraphics to Canva, but I wonder
if Canva has like an API orsomething that you can like
format for.

(22:21):
Oh, the tech geek in me is likegetting excited about that.
I wonder if they have like areadable file.
They probably just have it likewith their own designers that
are in-house, they create forthem, so like their graphics are
interactive.
But that would be somethingcool to look into to see if they
have any like file format thatyou can upload to.

(22:43):
That's like a canvas specificfile format that works better
with their system.
So I'm not saying to stopkeynote, to stop making keynote,
but if you're wanting to branchout on Etsy and maybe start
selling, like, maybe over onEtsy you start offering these

(23:04):
different file formats oh yeah,by the way, like here they are,
here's the same usual thing onmy website.
But I would definitely, whateveryou decide to do, I would
leverage your audience, yourcommunity that you already have.
Send out your weekly emails toyour Etsy shop, offering them

(23:24):
regardless, like whatever it isoffering them, what you have
over there too, and that willhelp your Etsy shop grow,
especially where you alreadyhave a following and you've been
doing this for a while, sandy.
That would be a great way and agreat leg up that, like other
sellers don't have, and maybekeep all of your keynote

(23:46):
products.
You can, you know, start typingin like keynote stickers,
keynote presentation, like typein keynote, and that'll help
maybe give your products aupdate, but I don't know how
much I would.
I would hang out there, youknow.
I don't know how much effort Iwould go into if you have like

(24:06):
hundreds of products on yourEtsy shop and you aren't finding
proof on Etsy that people aresearching for these.
I don't know how much effort Iwould put into updating your SEO
if you know people alreadyaren't searching for this.
You know what I mean.
You can maybe try it, do like atrial period too.
You know, one month, like I'mjust going to update things and

(24:29):
update my SEO, find some newkeywords, like in the search bar
, using that method that I justtalked about, and then, if it's
not, you know, proving to belucrative for you, then you can
maybe go and explore these otherareas.
Yeah, she said they're offeredas PNG stickers also, but the

(24:50):
keynote files are for my usersthat love to customize color and
edit them.
Yeah, and that's why I'm likeyeah, you are a seasoned Canva
user, you know, and since youare the only person or the only
shop showing up on Etsy, I meanthere also is the side of it

(25:14):
that like, okay, this is very, very niche, specific, but since
you're the only one.
It might also help you, likethere was only one shop selling,
so I wanted, like I didn't wantto pierce my ears, like have
like multiple piercings.
So I was out looking on Etsyfor like magnetic earrings that
I could like put on my earlobehigher up so I wouldn't have to

(25:38):
go get my ears pierced, andthere's only like one shop
selling cute magnetic studs andearrings.
Okay, so I had so much fun inthat live with Sandy and she's a
rock star, you guys.
She's been around since 2012.
She has had loads of success, especially with her sponsorship

(26:01):
that she mentioned, and thenwith her keynote files that she
has sold.
But, just like with everything, and part of me was like, oh,
like, trying to not break thenews like softly but not give
her information that like wouldmake her believe that she can't

(26:24):
still be successful with herkeynote items.
However, sometimes it's just asimple sidestep from the area
that we're currently in.
You know Canva, with itexploding.
And again, like, I encourageyou guys, go back to the
research, like go, go back tothe stats, do your research, do

(26:46):
your stats watch these companies, watch these products, watch
this, these softwares, these um,you know types of different
equipment that are coming out inyour space.
If you're also a digital sellerlike me that is selling files
for these different softwares, for these different technologies
, what's the stats, what's theresearch showing you the

(27:08):
direction in which it's headed?
Is it growing or is it kind oflike you're on a sinking ship
and over time it just keeps ongoing down and down?
That is a strong indicator thatit's time to maybe change
things up in your business and Ithink that for Sandy, I really
want to follow up with her afterthis and see how it goes.

(27:29):
I think that adding on an incomefrom a line of products that is
related to a software that'sjust like exploding right now,
like Canva, is a very smart movefor her particular product.
You know presentations, keynotepresentations like I get, and
understand why those people lovekeynote, but it could be just

(27:55):
that they haven't learned Canva.
They don't even know aboutCanva.
Maybe you know that could bethe reason why they haven't
flocked over to Canva yet orwhatever that product is.
So Keynote is very close toCanva.
You know I can see a lot of thataudience converting and that
that is what, um, I encourageyou guys to be watching for and

(28:17):
looking at.
If you choose to do the samething, like what is the area
that runs parallel to the areathat you're already in, that
would be an easy transition.
That's a low hanging fruit thatwouldn't take too much time.
Also, you know, with Sandy, sherecords videos.
She's already kind of teachingpeople her product line so she

(28:38):
can take those people with her, teach them this new, fun,
developing area and, yes, thatdoes take a little bit more work
, but where she already has thiscommunity and this bulk of
people that are interested inthis product idea, like I said,
on that live, about 10% to 20%is what we see that actually go

(29:04):
along with you.
But for Sandy I think that thatwill be higher because it's
such a relatable area Canva issuch a relatable area to keynote
.
So I hope you've enjoyed thisepisode and I hope that you will
take away those parts of it andapply it to your own business
If you're experiencing the same.
That's that that Sandy did notSally Sandy.

(29:25):
Okay, I'll see you guys nextweek.
Until then, bye, thank you, thank you.
