This is the Nexus Podcast.
The most important piece ishaving a healthy brain and
nervous system.
The next most important thingyou could do if you're looking
for success, if you're lookingfor longevity, if you're looking
for a life filled with purpose,is going to be prayer,
meditation and sleep.
We know definitively that 90%of nutrition and stimulation to
(01:09):
someone's brain comes frommovement of the joints of the
spine.
I would add the word proper inthere, and I'm not making this
up on my own.
There's a guy named RogerSperry who won a Nobel Prize in
the 80s for finding that the 90%of nutrition and stimulation to
the brain comes from movementof the joints of the spine.
So foundation is chiropracticcare.
So in our office what we have,we have something called a
(01:30):
production pyramid, and so theproduction pyramid looks like
this is at the very bottom ofthe pyramid.
The base, the foundation, isbrain-based,
neurologically-basedchiropractic care.
So we have to focus on thebrain.
We have to get joints to thespine moving well, and it's not
just joints of the spine movingwell, it's the right joints of
the spine to affect the correctside of the brain so that we can
get lasting changes.
That neurologically based careis designed to focus primarily.
(01:55):
There are other parts of thebrain too won't get into all
those, but on the frontal cortexor the prefrontal cortex, and
we know that the prefrontalcortex is the part of the brain
that's responsible for success.
I can go way down a rabbit holeon, like school and teaching
and all that stuff.
We can do that some other time.
If someone doesn't addresstheir brain and they're like I
have a great connection to God,I meditate regularly, I'm
(02:15):
praying regularly and I feellike I'm sleeping great.
The reality is is that if thebrain is stuck in a fight or
flight state, then those stresshormones are turning off our
frontal cortex, which isresponsible for our faith,
responsible for our hope andresponsible for our optimism.
So, from that perspective, isthe stress hormones weaken
(02:39):
frontal cortex?
Frontal cortex is responsiblefor faith, hope, optimism.
So right there, the level ofprayer life that you could have,
the level of connection to Godor source or universe or
whatever you want to call it youcould have, is not going to be
as strong if you have stresshormones on in your system,
whether or not you know they'rethere.
We're turning off stresshormones when we have the
neurologically basedchiropractic care and the sleep
(03:00):
front.
If our body is stuck in astressed out state, then the
stress hormones, by nature, aredesigned to keep us awake and
keep us alert, to look for thenext scary thing.
It keeps us on guard, which isalso why the stress hormones
weaken the front part of thebrain.
So, big picture if we don'thave a healthy brain, if we
don't have joints of the spinethat are moving well, that is
going to negatively affect oursleep, our meditation and our
(03:22):
prayer.
From there, harvard did thisstudy that says the number one
key indicator that they foundwith people to lead to a long
life that is healthier isrelationships.
But what's interesting in ourworld is that if we look at the
part of the brain that isresponsible for healthy
relationships, that'sresponsible for our emotional
intelligence, it's literally thefrontal cortex of the brain.
(03:44):
So, again, if we have stresshormones flooding the system
because we have lack of movementof the joints of the spine,
that's going to negativelyaffect our sleep, it's going to
negatively affect our prayerlife, it's going to affect our
faith, hope, optimism and it'salso going to decrease our
emotional intelligence.
Why?
Because in a fight or flightstate we don't need to have a
high emotional intelligence tofight a bear or run away from it
(04:06):
.
We need to have low emotionalintelligence.
So this is this genius designthat God made our bodies with to
keep us safe and protected infight or flight state.
And remember, movement of thejoints of the spine or lack of
movement of the joints of thespine will release stress
hormones into our system thatweaken the front part of the
brain.
So if we have a weaker nervoussystem.
If we have a weaker brain, wewill have poorer sleep,
(04:28):
meditation, prayer and we willalso have a poorer quality of
relationships.
And I see it all the time inthe context of our office where
a dad will start coming in.
So, say, mom and the kids havebeen coming for a while, dad
finally decides to come in, andI've had two cases of this that
are really cool.
And a month in, dad startstaking the kids to school just
on his own and mom's like I haveno idea why he decided to do
(04:50):
this.
It's because we've decreasedthat amount of stress in the
system and so the connectionwith the kids and the family
starts to increase.
And we see stuff like this allthe time.
And it's again.
This is just the nature of howthe brain and nervous system
function and fire in the firstplace.
So if we don't have a properlyfunctioning nervous system,
that's going to negativelyaffect our sleep or meditation
or prayer.
It's going to negatively affectour relationships, and then a
(05:12):
lot of people think that they'relike well, dude, listen, I eat
clean, so I'm healthy.
But the reality is that If ourbody is stuck in a fight or
flight state, we are not, and wecannot be in a rest and digest
state.
So keyword is digest.
So it doesn't matter how muchhealthy food someone eats
Whenever, like the ripped sixpack CrossFit athletes that we
take care of.
When they come in and theystart PRing every exercise and
(05:35):
they start lifting heavier andthey feel like their recovery is
better.
The reality is is like theirbody wasn't fully digesting the
nutrients that were put in it.
Well, if their body's stuck ina fight or flight state, so
nutrition alone cannot fix abrain problem or a nervous
system problem.
And then the next layer on topof that is going to be what most
people go to as well, which islike well, I work out every day,
so I must be moving.
(05:56):
But what we know through all theresearch is that if you sit for
more than six hours in a day, then you completely negate one
hour of working out that youwould do so.
A lot of us I think most of usprobably have high level of
stress sitting at a desk all day.
We work out an hour a day.
We think the joints of ourspine are moving well, but the
reality is that we're completelynegating that one hour of
working out by sitting for therest of the day.
(06:16):
And so exercise is great, butyou got to remember that
exercise one puts a stress onthe system.
Two, exercise also breaks downmuscle tissue.
It breaks down our connectivetissue, like our ligaments and
our tendons, because we want tobuild them up healthier and
stronger.
So if our body's already stuckin fight or flight and we're
breaking down muscle tissue andconnective tissue to build up
(06:36):
new stress hormones and we'rebreaking down our bodies when
we're going to work out, ourrecovery is not as good, and so
even working out in and ofitself is a stress on the system
.
It's a breakdown process.
So people who are like dude, Ihave my nutrition is on point,
my exercise is on point, but Istill have all these issues.
It's because they never wentback and addressed the brain
properly in the first place.
(06:57):
And then the very tip of thepyramid, like the least
important thing that people cando that most people start with
are all the hacks.
So we could talk aboutsupplements, we could talk about
red light, we could talk aboutcold plunge, we could talk about
sauna, not saying that any ofthose things are wrong, not
saying that any of those thingsare bad, but most people try to
hack their way out of aneurological issue and you can
(07:18):
never do that Like.
It's literally not possible.
Remember that in fight orflight we can't be in rest and
digest.
So if we're taking supplements, how many clients I've seen come
in and they're like I want$1,000 supplements a month and I
have no change in my skinissues or my digestive issues?
We can get them off all thatstuff a lot of times and it's
just.
It's not because we're amazing, but it's because the power that
God gave us within our bodiesbodies to heal is so much
(07:41):
greater than what we give itcredit for.
But we can't do it in astressed out state.
So when we address the brain,we will allow for better sleep,
better recovery, bettermeditation, better prayer,
better connection to God.
That's going to lead to betterrelationships if we have the
healthy front part of the brain.
Having a healthy front part ofthe brain is going to reactivate
our digestive system, so we'redigesting the nutrients that
we're eating properly.
(08:02):
It's going to allow us torecover better after our
workouts.
And then all the hack stuffthat people do, the supplements,
the red light it just takes itall to another level.
But if we miss that foundation,if we miss the brain, then we
miss the whole thing in thefirst place, and it's like
people who are operating at 90%,thinking that they're at a
hundred and they have no ideathat there's more.
So that's our productionpyramid.
(08:24):
And then on the other side thisis the conversation I love to
talk about is that we have fourPs inside of our office.
So where most offices aretalking about pain, where most
offices are talking aboutheadaches and TMJ and stuff like
that, we have very few painconversations.
Our conversations look morelike this we talk about the four
Ps posture, presence, productivity and profit and so
(08:45):
what we know is that a healthyfrontal cortex of the brain is
what is responsible for ahealthy, strong posture.
So if our front part of ourbrain is weaker, our posture
will be weaker or poorer, and sofrom there, when we start
adjusting someone, we'reliterally affecting the part of
the brain that's responsible forhealthy posture.
So if you're ever in a businessmeeting or you're ever out
(09:06):
around town my wife and I hadthis conversation the other day.
She was watching the highschool kids come down the hill
and she's, like every kid, poorposture, and that's because most
of them, from the time theywere one year old were put on an
iPad.
So they're put in this poorposture state, which is an
indicator of how their brain isfunctioning.
Remember that front part of thebrain that's responsible for
our posture is responsible forour decision-making, it's
(09:26):
responsible for ourrelationships, for our
connection to God, for ourhealing, et cetera.
So if we have a weak front partof the brain, we have weak
posture.
From there we get into thisconversation of presence.
So if we wake up the front partof the brain, someone has good
posture by nature.
They're going to have betterpresence.
That presence is going to allowpeople to be more connected to
(09:48):
the people around them, to getmore done, which leads to
productivity.
And then the last piece of thisis profit.
So, yes, we talk about we canhelp entrepreneurs make more
money.
That's great.
We've seen a lot of people dothings that they thought were
scary and make way more moneydoing it.
But actually what we care aboutinside of our office is
profiting from life experiences,so people being able to do the
things they love, to be able toplay with their kids again or
(10:09):
their grandkids again, or do thethings that they want to love
and do for a lifetime.
And so the four piece plus aproduction pyramid is how we
operate in our office, and Ithink that's really what sets us
apart Anybody who has a painproblem.
The pain is actually not theproblem.
The problem is the brain thatsends the signals for someone to
have pain.
So we're not adjusting someoneto fix their pain problems.
(10:33):
We're adjusting someone tocorrect their brain problems.
So when someone sits down withus and they say, well, I just
want my back to feel better.
So there's a couple of thingsthat I ask them, and the first
thing is well, if you just wantyour back to feel better, you
just wanted your neck or yourshoulder or your knee to feel
better you could go to yourprimary care physician.
They will probably give yousome sort of medication that
(10:56):
will get your pain to go away.
It's going to come back everyday.
You're going to have tocontinue to take the medication,
but if that's all you'relooking for is getting out of
pain, then you're not going tohave to.
You don't need to come to myoffice every day to do that.
You can go buy a bottle ofTylenol or Advil at Costco.
(11:17):
That will last you 90 days andit will get you out of pain.
We're looking at getting peopleback to their life and what
really it comes down to is thisidea that the pain is only a
symptom of a greater cause, of adysfunction that's happening in
the brain.
So anybody who's just lookingfor I want pain relief and I
want to get out of pain they'renot a good fit for office.
(11:37):
That's why I tell people in thebeginning hey, I'm not the
fixer, I'm not going to heal you.
Your body only knows how toheal itself.
And some people don't careabout their body healing itself.
They just want to feel better.
And if they want to feel better, they can do it with way less
cost involved in terms of comingto my office multiple times a
week, in terms of what it coststo see us in the first place.
(11:57):
But they're never going toaddress the cause.
They're just going to chaseafter addressing a symptom.
And what's interesting aboutthat is when we get into a
medication conversation which isoutside of my scope to
prescribe or tell anyone to getoff their medication, anything
like that.
But a lot of times if we stuntor we turn off our pain signal,
our brain is going to respondwith an equal and opposite
reaction to turn up the painsignal more so that you pay
(12:20):
attention to it, because pain isthere to get us to stop doing
something.
So if the sole purpose is Idon't want to stop doing what I
was doing and I'm just trying tomask the pain or mask the
symptoms, my stuff's only goingto get worse unless I actually
address the cause.
And it's such an interestingparadox.
So some people just aren't agreat fit, and that's okay, and
that's why I sit with them and Isay, hey, we're not going to
(12:46):
fix you.
My job's not to fix you.
Your body only knows how to healitself, but it can only do that
in a rest and digest state.
I'm not saying that I'm betterthan anybody.
It's just dependent on whatyou're looking for.
Like there's no good, it's justwhat are you looking for.
There's no bad, it's just whatare you looking for.
And if someone's just lookingfor a quick fix probably not the
right fit.
If someone's looking for alasting change and a sense of
purpose and a new connection toGod and a new connection to
(13:09):
things that they probably didn'teven expect were possible, then
a little bit different versionof care is probably going to be
more in line with what they'relooking for.
