Speaker 1 (01:16):

Speaker 2 (01:17):
We got a lot of viewers and listeners love when
our guests come on and learn a lot about them.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Man. Uh and this guest is no different.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
He's been a major part of what I say, DC
basketball d m B basketball.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
For over thirty years. Season.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
He's been a major part as a player and now
as a coach, slash mentor and I can use a
hundred other words to describe him. But yeah, he's uh,
somebody that I've always respect, respected as an athlete and
(01:56):
as a person. I'm very happy to have him on show.
I don't want to give up too much. I went,
I went to the viewers and listen to hear from
the man.
Speaker 1 (02:06):
I love it when you get excited, brother, you get
lost for words, you get.
Speaker 2 (02:12):
So so, without further ado, I'm gonna bring to the show.
Speaker 1 (02:16):
Bring to the stage, Douglas. Door, move brother, what's up?
Speaker 2 (02:25):
Yeah, I was just saying, I like that theme music
y'all got going on.
Speaker 1 (02:29):
Man, I appreciate that. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
I had had to bring had to bring you in, right, man,
had to had to take you back to the old
days at uh at a club.
Speaker 1 (02:41):
You yeaes, sir, that's it.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
So yeah, Doug Man, let's man, we appreciate you being
on the show. You're somebody that you know, I've been
one on the show for a minute because you're doing
a lot of great things out there, especially without you
out here in terms of on the DMV basketball circuit.
We definitely want to talk about that. But here at
the No Cast Sport Show podcast when we have our guests.
(03:10):
We like to start at the beginning, because before you
were coaching and mentoring, you was a hell of an
athlete yourself. So I like, I want to start at
the beginning in terms of you know, when did that
that light bulb go off? Or when did you know
that you want to be an athlete? And was basketball
your first love?
Speaker 1 (03:31):
Uh Man.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
Neighborhood, Georgia Avenue and eight older brothers. You know, it
was just competitive in the house first, you know, don't care.
We playing basketball and on an oatmeal box in the
in the room, whatever, throw back tackle in the room. Man,
it was just competitive. I was like real competitive. And
(03:57):
all my brothers, you know, like you said, they didn't
they tough off the break. So as soon as I
walked out of the backyard, I was I was ready
to roll.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
You know. My first love was was football.
Speaker 2 (04:11):
Okay football, play number six, you know, living uptown, playing
for number six, you know, playing against all the top players,
because you know, back then it was it was club
ball with au so against the number eleves, number fourteens.
Speaker 1 (04:26):
You know, man number ten, you know, so you know,
it was.
Speaker 2 (04:30):
A it was a culture of you know, being competitive
back you know, Okay, I played football, baseball, ran track, basketball,
We did it all, you know, playing club ball.
Speaker 1 (04:40):
Mm hmm. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
What was it somebody in particular help you like that
competitive fire? I know you said in the household, your
brothers and you know, just being in a competitive environment.
But was that one person in particular that that kind
of put the battery in your back?
Speaker 1 (04:55):
Lean, dug, you can, you can, you can.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
Do some some things in in terms of basketball, football,
whatever it was you wanted to get into.
Speaker 1 (05:04):
Yeah, definitely.
Speaker 2 (05:04):
My mother was you know, she was she was put
the bathroom in my back a long time ago.
Speaker 1 (05:09):
She wanted me to play baseball. M hm.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
You know she coming from Mississippi, you know, born in
Mississippi nineteen thirty six, you know that baseball was big
in the South.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
You know.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
She was always looking at it was at Jim Abbott
and she was like, I want you to be a pitcher,
you know and play baseball. But nobody wasn't really playing
that much baseball around the way.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
You know.
Speaker 2 (05:31):
So we're doing in the school yard a little bit,
but nobody was really doing it, you know, playing football,
I mean playing baseball you know all the time in
the neighborhood. So you know it is you kind of
get to the sport that's around the way, that's it.
You know that was football first. You know everybody played
(05:52):
street football, throw back tackle, you know, so that was
all the first love in the city.
Speaker 1 (05:58):
Yes, sir, good so you said.
Speaker 4 (06:01):
So I know you say your mom is the one
who put that lit that find you. But you got
eight brothers, bro, y'all, y'all got to walk in mob
what what?
Speaker 1 (06:10):
Uh? What?
Speaker 4 (06:11):
Which one of your brothers would say was the one
that pushed you? Or which brothers push you to be
you know, the most competitive?
Speaker 1 (06:19):
Like? Was it what? I know you said it was
competition in your household?
Speaker 4 (06:23):
But which you know? Where you whether you where were
you in the eight? Were you're the youngest? Where you're
the middle?
Speaker 1 (06:28):
Like? Are you the oldest of the eight?
Speaker 2 (06:30):
Like?
Speaker 1 (06:30):
How how does that dynamic work with brothers? I got?
I got one, and I know how it was for us.
So you got eight, y'all, y'all you don't even got
to put together.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
You ain't got to ask for no help, y'all, got
you got your own competition.
Speaker 2 (06:43):
Yeah, I was the youngest out of eight, Okay, so
I don't care what my brother three years older than me,
five years older. Man, they was trying to kill me
every day. No, we spent some time. We spent our summers.
You know my mother, you know, your single parent mom.
So we'll spent our summers down in Mississippi, like the
whole were on the dirt dirt road and we just
(07:07):
open field and we just you know, uncle, you know,
uncle putting the court up for you. I apply would
And we playing every day, you know, every day outside
and the heat every day, and they was trying to
They was beating me every day until around like thirteen fourteen.
You know, you catch a little grosspurt, you know, because
(07:29):
I'm the tallest out of.
Speaker 1 (07:29):
All my brothers. Okay, my brother one of my brothers. Uh,
coach Jenkins.
Speaker 2 (07:35):
I know y'all know coach Jenkins, right, absolutely, So he
played he played football. He played football for UDC for
a minute, and you know, he went in for he
went in for a little bit and do a little
bit of you know time for a minute. But when
he got out he saw that I was you know,
you know, I had it. So he started pawing to
(07:55):
me after that, you know, because he like ten years
older than me. So I got all my like I said,
eight older brothers. Man, shoot, I got man.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
Getting some flashbacks now.
Speaker 4 (08:10):
So how so how was it when you went You
said you would go down to Mississippi.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
A lot of times.
Speaker 4 (08:16):
You know, when when cats go away for the summertime,
especially you start seeing like middle school students and from
middle school to high school, maybe even from elementary and
middle school when you go down, when you go away,
like I used to go away all the way all
the time to New York for the summers, and every
time you come back, you just feel like you came
back with a little bit of different edge, especially as
(08:37):
an athlete, because you're competing against different different athletes. So
what was it like going away for the summer and
then coming back and competing within your neighborhood, Like, did
you notice any difference or because you was with your
brothers all the time, you guys were just always at that,
you know, on that level.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
Yeah, I noticed that when I when I used to
get back around late August, so I was hitting more
athletic than every everyone else because outside all day you know, uh,
you know, get up in the morning, we gotta do chores,
and chores was crazy back then. We we're talking about
picking watermelons, and then you get your free time and
(09:19):
then you're eating for four four times a day. They
feeding well, So I'm coming back stronger faster, you know
than everyone you know that I that I was you know,
on a block with and they wasn't doing They was
going probably going to the corner store. Getting nothing from
the corner store. It's food in the house. And it
(09:41):
was crazy. I worked at the corner I was like eight,
eight years old. I used to work at the corner store.
Uh for my guy working there all the time, you know,
tearing up boxes and everything and putting up stuff, corner stuff.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
You know. Back then, we was doing everything, man, you know.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
So yeah, that's the That's what when I when I
got back, I was feeling I was more athletic than
a lot of cats on the block, you.
Speaker 1 (10:04):
Know, yep, hmm yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (10:08):
And Doug, So as you progressing through your as a
youth and your athletics career, say, heading into high school,
what would you say.
Speaker 1 (10:20):
You were more known for football or basketball? Man?
Speaker 2 (10:27):
Football, but that basketball, I don't know. It was a
different hitch man I was known for because I didn't
even like my freshman year, I played my friend year
and I didn't. I got peer pressure playing football Max,
Big Match, you remember Big Max. Yeah, way older than me.
Speaker 1 (10:48):
Man. They just kept on, man, you gotta play football.
Speaker 2 (10:50):
You gotta play football because from the neighborhood up on
Fourteenth Street. So we playing back tackle in h I'm one,
I'm one fifty man.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
They like for them and they keep on trying to
And I played nose guard.
Speaker 2 (11:03):
It's crazy. I played nose guard my first year. They
with the group I started, those guards. They just wanted
me with their group. You know, so, I mean football,
I had it. I had it football. It was kind
of easy. That's why right now, all the kids that
I have that play basketball, you know, they they athletes,
(11:26):
and I tell them, look, football might be the easiest
route for your for y'all.
Speaker 1 (11:30):
And it's true.
Speaker 2 (11:31):
A lot of them, you know, playing in the NFL now,
a lot of them playing high level D one. Basketball
is a bigger pool. You know, Basketball is just I mean,
it's a smaller pool.
Speaker 1 (11:41):
Football. I'm not saying it's easy. It was.
Speaker 2 (11:44):
It was easy for me. It was easy for me.
I you know, I seening y'all play running back, linebacker.
It was just so easy for me. You know what
I'm saying, because I had that go hard at me already,
but basketball harder for me. So I'm a competitive you
know what I'm saying. So I'm trying to be able
to learn how to read. I used to tell people
(12:07):
I used to average sometime, man, a triple double. I
had so many oohs and ours. It was crazy, you know.
I just love I love the crowd. You know, I
was croud at all, you know, right, you know back
how boys come to the game uptown the game, man,
and you just you just you're hooping for them, you
(12:27):
know what I'm saying, right, you know you're hooping harder
for them than a college scout most of the.
Speaker 1 (12:32):
Time, you know. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:36):
So so you entering the ninth grade, did you know
which high school you was going to or well, was
there a few high schools that you was considering. Was
somebody trying to pull you one way or the other?
Speaker 1 (12:50):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (12:50):
Saint John's. But I couldn't do it to as all boys,
and man couldn't do it. I'm he was, man. You
remember Eric McCloud, he was playing Georgetown. He was, Yeah,
I'm like, oh, man, I just couldn't do it.
Speaker 1 (13:11):
Man. The whole thing. I couldn't do it.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
I wanted to, you know, I wanted to play in
my neighborhood, like like E was back then.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
I wanted to play in the neighborhood. Mm hmm. Yeah.
So so you were so you never going to Roosevelt, right, yeah, Roosevelt. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (13:27):
So so how was that transition so you started at
Roosevelt that you did you have to play freshman or
JV first or was it straight varsity? How did that work?
I went straight played straight varsity football. Okay, play straight
varsity football that I didn't play for two years football
because I was trying to focus on basketball.
Speaker 1 (13:46):
I played, uh my freshman in basketball. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (13:52):
It was competitive, it was. It was real competitive. You know,
back then you had like a hundred people trying out.
But I know I had a boy my sophomore year,
you know, I called a little Grossberger because I came
up in Roosevelt probably like five five nine something like that,
you know, and I got a little gross spread like
four inches.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
So after that, you know, you feel a little different,
you know, mm hmm. Absolutely yeah. Cool.
Speaker 4 (14:18):
So So with so, when you when you're doing the
football stuff and just sports in general, you have you know,
obviously you have a disability with your arm. Did that
play a part in any of your decisions? Because football
is I mean I played running back and linebacker and
safety and all that good stuff. Man, it's it's a
(14:38):
crazy sport. Did you get any pushback from that? Or
was it just because you had that go hardman till
I mean eight brothers, I mean seven brothers make you tough?
So what would what if any type of pushback did
you get or any apprehension for you plan or again
just because again you you it was just rough and
(15:01):
rugged and nobody even paid attention to it.
Speaker 1 (15:03):
You just was out there doing your thing.
Speaker 4 (15:04):
Like, what if any did that play a part of
your decisions with your sports that you played and just
sports in general.
Speaker 2 (15:12):
Well, it wasn't no pushback from coaches at all, because
back then all the coaches they knew me since elementary school,
like I went to all like buster schools.
Speaker 1 (15:24):
I went to you know Pole, you know, falling for
a year.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
Things went wrong there, so I had to go to
you know, go to a private school. But all the
teachers and coaches and all that, they was right there
in the whole neighborhood, So knew from clubball.
Speaker 1 (15:40):
But some of.
Speaker 2 (15:41):
The jokers that was playing, they was they were sleeping
a little bit.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
It's funny story when.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
My senior year, when I started playing football, because everybody
was normal for basketball. So you know, newcats don't know
who I am. And first first practice, you know that
pit you had to go in a pit. Man, I
put five I put five people out of practice. Yeah,
but so big guys, you know, so I had to
(16:16):
get right back into it and let him know that I
ain't just know, you know, people think.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
Basketball players off.
Speaker 2 (16:21):
So when I got the football field, I played football
being competitive.
Speaker 1 (16:26):
Yeah, because my man, ed Cheffy, you.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
Remember ed Cheffy absolutely over there and him, you know,
the main the recipe. All they was like, oh man,
we were killing you. They beat Roosevelt bad and football.
So I'm like, I can't let y'all keep on. They talking,
trashplating out of my house every night. We talking, I'm.
Speaker 1 (16:50):
Gonna show y'all.
Speaker 2 (16:51):
So I started playing football again and you know, showing
him that look this we do this uptown too. We
played this football because they had a mab over there
a lot and all. You know, they're athletes. Man, that's
just a round six and number eleven. You know, boys
and girls playing on that rock field over number eleven.
Speaker 4 (17:13):
So when you so, when you when you're when you're
when you're doing the football piece. Did you find that
football made you a better basketball player? Because you said
there's always the assumption that basketball players are soft. But
I train a lot of kids whenever I have football kids, man,
I tell them, you know, if you can play basketball, man,
or if you're already playing basketball and you get around
(17:35):
guys that's playing football, it just makes you tougher. Did
you find that to be true for yourself? Or you
were just Again, I keep always trying not to ask
dumb questions because you got seven brothers.
Speaker 1 (17:46):
You just tough anyway, it don't matter.
Speaker 4 (17:48):
But did did did you feel the difference that football
made on the basketball court?
Speaker 1 (17:54):
Well? I think it made you tougher.
Speaker 2 (17:57):
But uh, basketball is easy to go over the football
to me, and I see for a lot of cats
is easier football. When I come on football being you know,
kind of rusty, a little bit kind of rusty with
the you know, jumping and moving everything because I played
full back.
Speaker 1 (18:16):
M it's tough for you. You're tougher, you get the
add ones you're not.
Speaker 2 (18:21):
You don't care falling and because a lot of kids
now I know you, they worry about falling all the time.
Yeah yeah, so at that piece, yes, but going to
basketball football, man, you just have better agility, you know,
like we come from football. You gotta drop a little
(18:42):
bit of weight a little bit going to basketball, you know.
Speaker 1 (18:45):
Yeah, that conditioning different too, run up and down the.
Speaker 2 (18:49):
Pacers, crazy football, you know, and you don't be in
that much shape like you like, you know, being at
the football, you know, you get arrests.
Speaker 1 (19:00):
Everything, you know, so it's going a lot, you know.
Speaker 2 (19:06):
So I mean it helps them outdoor people that play
outdoor sports like lacrosse talk and everything.
Speaker 1 (19:14):
They just outdoor sports is just they're just tougher anyway,
you know, for sure. For sure.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
So and when at high school, so always heard about
your football and I never got to see you play football,
but but like I always heard the stories about how
much of a beast you were out there on the field.
But I did get to see you first hand on
on the basketball court. And man, I just remember, man,
(19:41):
you you was out there man making people look foolish.
Where people was, you know, they were scared to guard
you out there. I remember we was in the Christmas
tournament together, you know what I mean. And we was
out in uh o'bern Shan Tilly, Oh, Shan Tilly, Yeah yeah, yeah,
yeah yeah, Shan t and uh you were out there playing, man,
(20:04):
And I just was just looking at the crowd reaction
and some of the some of the ball players for
the other teams that I think that they were in
y'all bracket and everybody was talking about Man, Man, I
hope they don't win. Man, don't When I had to go,
you know, you was out there making people. Man, you
was cooking, you know what I'm saying. But so at
(20:24):
the end of the day, knowing that you were such
an elite basketball player and an elite football player, how
did you make your decision?
Speaker 1 (20:33):
Like which went out? Am I going to do?
Speaker 2 (20:36):
Like after I get out of Roosevelt, after I get
out of high school? Because I know you had recruiters
and all that stuff coming at you from both sides?
Speaker 1 (20:44):
How how did you decide which way to go?
Speaker 2 (20:48):
Like I said, Man, basketball is just that got that
hitch man, you know, like I said, coming uptown, you
got man, be honest, it's crazy. You gotta put you
gotta playground a court on where.
Speaker 1 (21:02):
I live at.
Speaker 2 (21:03):
You're talking about every three block Raiders, you got to court,
they hooping. I'm talking about both courts with the old
Eds and the youngest. They just hooping. So as soon
as you come outside, it's just basketball. And that was
the culture. You know, Urban Coalition, the Kenner League, everything
was man basketball was more sexyer that.
Speaker 1 (21:22):
I mean, it's just what it is in DC.
Speaker 2 (21:25):
And you know, I know a lot of kids say
we got the culture now, but you know, when we
was coming up, it was the real, real culture of basketball.
You know, like we didn't care where we want to
go to school at. We just wanted to hoop. Yeah,
And so it was easy for me to make that decision,
Like it was much easy for me because I didn't
love football, but.
Speaker 1 (21:47):
I love basketball.
Speaker 2 (21:48):
I just love having that ball in my hand and
knowing I can control that motherfucker in front of me.
They he couldn't do nothing with me. I don't care
if they trying to guard me. Make me go left,
you know, I go left. You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (22:00):
It was It was a joy. You know, we think
about we had.
Speaker 2 (22:02):
Summer leagues everywhere on the playground like Ridge Parker Lead.
You know, you got very fun, you got everything. It's
just basketball is d C, d NV is basketball.
Speaker 1 (22:14):
You know.
Speaker 2 (22:14):
I know it's football players coming out and everything else,
but it's nothing like basketball in the city, especially in
the summertime. And then when high schools people be depressed.
Look when when some of old people be depressed high
you know, people be depressed and there's no more basketball
to go.
Speaker 1 (22:33):
Watch, you know, mm hmm yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (22:37):
So so who was uh like, who who was recruiting you? Like,
who were you considering in terms of going going to
play college or did you take any visits?
Speaker 1 (22:47):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (22:48):
Man, I had one Georgia Tech that was one of
the one that was really recruiting me heavy, you know
what I'm saying. That came out the same year you know,
Marlbury came out, right, you know, the s A T
was it was rough with SAT.
Speaker 1 (23:05):
We wasn't prepared. I wasn't paying for the s A T.
Speaker 2 (23:08):
You know, So I was you know, I went to
prep school for a minute with the prep school, then
went from prep school to Macneese State. So I was
at McNee State first, I had the red shirt because
of the whole prop thing down with the JUCO and
we won the national championship in JUCO. That was you know,
that was that was like that was big for like
(23:30):
for me to go play you know. That was highly competitive,
real highly competitive.
Speaker 1 (23:37):
Mm hmm. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (23:40):
And I don't before I passed the back of the
go go ahead and that I had more schools in football.
That's crazy, but I had more school and football. Oh wow, Yeah,
that's a good position to be. And brother great and
only played a few years of varsity football. But yeah,
(24:02):
it was it was it was easy. They saw you know,
most of time in football, man, they did see a
kid walking in the hallway and they offering without even
you know what I'm saying, without even seeing them playing
on the field.
Speaker 1 (24:13):
Like I had so many kids like that that you'll
see us.
Speaker 2 (24:17):
It'd be like six five two forty coach like off
from how do you want off of a scholarship just
because he played basketball?
Speaker 1 (24:24):
You know he can move on a basketball courts going
to Magic he thinking.
Speaker 2 (24:28):
You know, yeah, we just had a guest on him
not too long ago talking about his experience playing against
Antonio Gates, you know what I mean. And you know
and Tonio he went to college as a basketball player
but ended up, you know, being a Hall of Fame
football player. But so I mean that that transition is
(24:52):
definitely something I know that can be done, and coaches
look at just because of the height, the size, the
athletic ability and all like big hands, stuff like that.
You know that that a lot of times those football
coaches look at from their athletes.
Speaker 1 (25:07):
So I just looked at something on Instagram. Uh of
the day.
Speaker 2 (25:11):
It was like the blue Chip Lebron old team, Younger
Son old team, the blue Chip.
Speaker 1 (25:18):
And you team. But they was like, what are they
doing now? Man?
Speaker 2 (25:22):
You got five of them kids playing Georgia football, Ohio State,
West Virginia everything. You know, they playing foot high level football,
you know. The only ones who was like just Mikey
Williams and uh Browny the only one playing still playing basketball, right,
(25:42):
But a lot of kids don't want to. It's just
because the culture here. I see a lot of kids
here that be playing football.
Speaker 1 (25:49):
They don't. They don't.
Speaker 2 (25:51):
They're not playing They playing basketball. And that's because of
the culture. And that's why that's how I got caught
up too. You know, you record listen and you see
Chris Smith, come on, you got yeah, you got you.
Speaker 1 (26:06):
Know what I'm saying with sheet Wallace.
Speaker 2 (26:07):
You see all these players playing and you're seeing currently
comes from Baltimore, sam caa sale and you seeing.
Speaker 1 (26:13):
That along while you can't even get in the gym.
Yeah right here, you ain't get.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
Ye.
Speaker 4 (26:20):
It's crazy because you know when you you're speaking on
you know, speaking on that with what one thing that
we always say what football is you can't teach sas
like I can take a six' five guy and as
long as he got a little bit of, hard we
can put him on the practice squad to just give a.
Speaker 1 (26:35):
Look you can't do that in basketball because you got to.
Speaker 4 (26:37):
Move so you got you, know you got six five, six,
six six seven that if you can't handle the ball
and you can't shoot unless you can play some all standing,
defense you just you just a regular.
Speaker 1 (26:49):
Dude because what is? It what is?
Speaker 4 (26:51):
THAT i Think i've seen something when my son was
coming out like they had like.
Speaker 1 (26:56):
Was it six nine and? Above like looking at And i'm, Like,
god it's. Not we're just trying to get the six.
Speaker 4 (27:05):
Foot but it's different because, you LIKE i, said you
on the island with, basketball, man you got you gotta
be able to play both sides of the. Ball you
gotta you definitely got to be able to play, defense
and if you can't handle the, ball then you're in.
Trouble so it's a little bit different fa sides when
it comes to, football as you, know BECAUSE i can
put a.
Speaker 1 (27:21):
Dude that's six six out of. That ALL i.
Speaker 4 (27:23):
Need to do is be in a spot and go.
Forward we can get somebody blocked down on you give
a little bit of. Resistance it's an, easy easier transition for.
That so they'll put some money on that because it's
a lot of guys that looked apart that can't play
a liquor, football but they get they going to school for,
free and more power to. THEM boyd can't teach, that
(27:43):
So god bless.
Speaker 2 (27:45):
Them it's more, difficult you, know it's just more difficult to,
play you. Know so that's WHY i fell in love
Because i'm an, athlete but Really i'm a compelli you
you see, ME i do. IT i do the same
way HOW i. Could but IF i was, playing that's
the same WAY i.
Speaker 1 (28:02):
Am in development kid is you?
Speaker 2 (28:03):
Know mmh well what uh what au program did you
come up?
Speaker 1 (28:09):
Through?
Speaker 2 (28:09):
Uh the first played For semon mm hmmm the, way
and THEN i played With Miss tilman for a minute
WITH Pg. Jaguar, OKAY i was playing WITH. Pompeii small little,
groups you. Know, YEAH i played With pompeii and you
Know Chris, Pompeii chris Pomp, yeah for, SURE.
Speaker 1 (28:30):
I played with.
Speaker 2 (28:31):
Him he got everybody from around the, way that's what he,
did got all the inter.
Speaker 1 (28:34):
Acids you.
Speaker 2 (28:35):
Know, yeah that was a fun, experience BUT a you
wasn't wasn't all that crazy back?
Speaker 1 (28:40):
Then, yeah that it.
Speaker 2 (28:42):
Definitely it wasn't like it is. Now BUT au was
still exciting because it was like for us in our,
era it was like you was playing for, pride like
from like the area where you was. From so you
go these national tournaments, whatever you get to compete it Against, Chicago, La, boston.
Whoever and we was trying to show, that you, know
(29:05):
this area had the best, ballers you know WHAT i.
Mean so that's what it was all, about you, know
for us back. THEN i think now it's just it's
it's at a it's. CRAZY i don't even UNDERSTAND au right.
Now but back, THEN i, mean it wasn't like, though
practicing every day and nothing like that you practice ahead
of the tournament a few days and then you get
(29:26):
on a plane and, go or playing the tournament and.
Go and that's WHAT i loved about a just being
being able to rep where you was from and get
the bump against players that you may not been able
to play against otherwise just because they was from around the.
Speaker 1 (29:43):
Country so AND i used to love.
Speaker 2 (29:45):
You SO i always had to shout out MY MiB
BECAUSE i Love executive. THREE i tell EVERYBODY i think
we the GREATEST aau program ever a. Symbol but you,
know everybody got their. Opinion Miss man brother, Man Mr
bates was a bad boy. Man give us those, old
(30:05):
those OLD t shirts with the numbers peeling off and
bring your own red shirts. Though, yeah scooping and that's
that's what it, all you. Know LIKE i, SAID i
don't remember, Practicing you're, right you remember. Practicing how How
Miss tillman got got me to play with her was
(30:27):
we was playing UP. Udc it was like just a
little rec game AND i was busting whatever team it
was playing.
Speaker 1 (30:32):
Against Willie bullock in them AND i was busting their.
Speaker 2 (30:36):
Ass and with, Me, Cheffy jermaine all us on the
same team And she, like, man look y'all try to
go play with me next. Week we ain't had no damn,
practice you know What i'm. Saying so now like you
have to, practice, because believe it or, not the kids
are not playing. Enough people think WHEN i be saying
they're not playing enough, basketball WHEN i mean not playing,
(30:57):
enough not playing enough unstructured.
Speaker 1 (31:01):
Basketball they under the whistle and get coached the whole.
Time And i'm, like, nah it's not the.
Speaker 2 (31:06):
Way y'all gotta go go play, bass go find somewhere
and go play.
Speaker 1 (31:10):
Basketball you, know Don't they just. Don't they don't do.
Speaker 2 (31:15):
It it's like every weekend they want to go playing a,
tournament or every, WEEKEND i mean every. Day they don't, say, hey,
Man i'm way to go who they, Say i'm gonna go.
Speaker 1 (31:26):
Train, yeah they want. To they want to be On instagram.
Speaker 2 (31:32):
Basketball y'all know, that. Right, Yeah SO i FOOL i
fool them a. Lot they think we training a lot
with my. Stuff but now we're going one on, one
three on, three and five on five all the. Time
so details what you teach you how to, play Because
i'm a big thing about, Teaching LIKE i, know people
we call it training but people do, train BUT i
(31:53):
try to, teach you, know teach, angle spacing and and
make you, tough you know What i'm, saying and just
conceps MY i think it's concepts and, confidence you know
What i'm.
Speaker 1 (32:01):
Saying, Yeah so that's.
Speaker 4 (32:03):
Crazy that's crazy that to, say because when we did our,
TRIALS i used to have a facility here called The,
campus and we originally only wanted one team and that
was to be around my.
Speaker 1 (32:12):
Son but we ended.
Speaker 4 (32:14):
Up having like eight, TEAMS i, believe and it threw
everybody off because the way that we did tryouts is
you came.
Speaker 1 (32:20):
In we had six.
Speaker 4 (32:21):
Courts the one court was one on, one and if
you could do well in one on, one we put
you in two on. Two then from two on two
you went to the next court three on, three and
then if you could get to the court where they
were playing five on, five you showed us something and
the kids didn't understand, it and then we had to
break it down to, them like if you can't, play
(32:42):
if you can't transition from one on one to three versus, three,
now how you're gonna play a five versus five? Games
like they don't understand, That LIKE i, said they're so
used to either playing one on one or run up
and down the, court but when you see them play
in a, game they have no understanding how To because
it was. FUNNY i was watching something the other day
where they were talking about you, know how do how
(33:03):
does pick up work when you go and play it
still last Where, OKAY i just walk in the. Gym
we just figure it out whoever's. Playing it don't matter
who you're playing. With y'all figured it out as you
run up and down the. Court, well part of that
is if you got dudes that don't understand how to play,
basketball y'all ain't winning unless you got just one dude
that's jacking all the.
Speaker 1 (33:20):
Time he's trying to.
Speaker 4 (33:21):
Dominate BUT i, think as you, said, coaches if it's
you have to play basketball because everybody has a gift
and everybody has a, weakness and if you don't know
what your weakness, is how you're gonna get. Better everybody
wants to try to build off of What i'm good. At,
no you got to you gotta work on the little
things to get better because if you, don't it's gonna
show up against a team that knows how to play
(33:43):
team basketball and can pull you out and get you
at a disadvantage with the one on one. Stuff because
if you can't play, defense you can't play. NOWHERE i
don't care what it. Is so that's that's dope that
you said. That AND i like that aspect of training
because we are here practicing and getting the understand the
nuances of the.
Speaker 1 (34:01):
Game, yeah and they can't play defense, because like you.
Speaker 2 (34:05):
Say ninety percent of the time they're going against a.
Speaker 1 (34:11):
Coney you'll know how to.
Speaker 2 (34:14):
REACT i got cones in my, practice but my cones
are not for acting like that's a. Man it's how
to flatten the defense. Out we're angles to go to and.
Everything you know THOSE i see some tracks they got
they crossing up the cones And i'm, like, no we're gonna.
Play when we do, that we're gonna. Play you get
What i'm. Saying that's where they lack of defense because of.
(34:38):
That you, know you gotta, bump, man every. DAY i
believe every day you gotta play basketball Like i'm probably
had to do it a lot more because you know
my so called, Disability but, man every day you gotta,
bump you, KNOW i, mean we get on, SHOT i
can get shot on my, own you know What i'm.
Speaker 1 (34:57):
Saying but every DAY i think you have to, bump you,
know for, sure for.
Speaker 2 (35:01):
Sure and you said something that kind of took me
back to my upbringing in terms of you, know you
got the kids out there playing one on, one three on,
three all that, stuff and that's how my father had.
Me you, KNOW i played a lot of one on,
ones two and, two three on threeses and he was
teaching me the concept of how to play one on,
one two and two three on, three like no wasted
(35:23):
no wasted, moves no wasted. Dribbles teaching me about, possessions
like when you playing one on, one you not just
checking the ball up and going to.
Speaker 1 (35:31):
Who it's about, possessions you know WHAT i.
Speaker 2 (35:33):
Mean you try to get to your spots where you
know you can make high percentage. Buckets and you know
WHAT i, mean you're keeping the, ball you play and make,
it take. It you never giving the ball back because
you're getting shots that you know you can make nine
out of ten.
Speaker 1 (35:46):
Times stuff like. That and then were playing two on,
two three on.
Speaker 2 (35:49):
Three he teaches me to pick and, roll you know
WHAT i, mean how to, come how to come off
the pick to look to score or win the, past
how to, pass which pass is to? Make and then
of course there's the whole defense aspect of it. Too
you know WHAT i meant to guard your? Man there
was a teacher, that, yeah in the, game and would
(36:09):
that make you take? It so like in how we
PLAY i played one on, one it's like you, say possessions.
COUNT i make the, kid if the defense they can
get the rebound and take it back up because it
makes the offensive guy go for his. Rebound make the
defensive guy box. Out But i'll try to tell my
(36:30):
younger coaches and Coaches rema they do it where they.
Might you could just take a crazy, right take a
crazy shot and you don't get penalized for.
Speaker 1 (36:39):
It so it's just one shot and it's.
Speaker 2 (36:41):
Done the officer, man don't try to get the, rebound
the defense man don't have the box.
Speaker 1 (36:45):
Out they just one shot and is. OVER i, said
that's not even reality.
Speaker 2 (36:48):
Basketball so my kids not having motors and they don't do.
Speaker 1 (36:53):
THIS i, said, look it's all a coach is. For
as never the. KIDS i always SAY i never had
a bad kid, ever, right you know What i'm. SAYING
i never had a bad.
Speaker 2 (37:01):
Kid it might be the parent can't stomach the, work
the work we're, doing and it might be, tough they
might can't stomach. It BUT i just think we got
to get back to, teaching like you, said like your
like it was teaching everything about concepts was a good,
shot bad shot when right now nobody body possessions no,
more you. Know AND i guess it's the analytics now
(37:24):
where they just getting shocked And i'm, like, damn.
Speaker 1 (37:26):
Why would he take that? Shot and the dude just
short in.
Speaker 2 (37:31):
Them you'll think that they're gonna take it to the
paint and dug them not even the three then take
a step, aside step back through, it you. Know and
it's just a bad, possession you. Know and that comes
from like you, said even a one on one.
Speaker 1 (37:47):
You can, shoot you a bad, shot you.
Speaker 2 (37:51):
Know, yeah fack that you gotta check it right back
up to him and be you, know it's kind of
back to. Me it's, backwards, Man paul is old, School
BUT i just called it, school.
Speaker 1 (38:01):
You know What i'm saying.
Speaker 2 (38:04):
Doing?
Speaker 1 (38:04):
It.
Speaker 2 (38:06):
Yeah in, fact And, doug did you always know you
wanted to be a? Coach when when Did when did
the coaching bug hit you. College BUT i HAD i
had a coach that was mother was Like papovich, man
Coach George nessler make the game seem. Easy When i'm
thinking of trying to do all this crossed to be,
(38:28):
like come, on, man what do you think this rock a?
Park i'm trying to cross everything up all the. Time he, like,
why you, Know he's, like what did you gotta?
Speaker 1 (38:36):
Doors make that read? Here make.
Speaker 2 (38:38):
That he didn't even he didn't yell at. Me he
was just just to sit your.
Speaker 1 (38:42):
Ass, down you know, WHAT i go think about.
Speaker 2 (38:45):
It he made that you Know berkeley, dude you Know
Bay area, guy white guy that THAT i you know
THAT i played.
Speaker 1 (38:52):
For but he was just he understood all the concepts of.
Speaker 2 (38:57):
Space so WHEN i got back AND i started coaching Of,
ROOSEVELT i WAS i first start coaching At, roosevelt.
Speaker 1 (39:04):
And it was just it just came.
Speaker 2 (39:06):
HERE i was just breaking down the game the kids
to make it make it easier.
Speaker 1 (39:10):
For, them you, know m kind of it kind of.
Came it.
Speaker 2 (39:15):
Came it came easy a little bit BECAUSE i had
to everything had to be you, know, shocking angles had to.
BE i had to think faster than the next, man you,
know to get to my spots and everything. Else so
SOMETIMES i think that's a, gift you, know gift THAT
i could see things before it. Happened LIKE i could
(39:37):
tell when the kids gonna turn the ball, over if
he dribbling in the wrong lane and he letting the
defense you, know shift over from the weak, side like
you guys try to make it read quicker getting into
the middle like. THAT i kind of cold see it
a little bit, faster a little, bit you. Know AND
i take the dogs. TOO i try to grab all the.
UNDERDOGS i DON'T i don't fuck with the prima. DONNA
(39:57):
i don't fuck with them at.
Speaker 1 (39:58):
All coach. THEM i can't coach, them you. Know, Yeah
and that that.
Speaker 4 (40:06):
Was gonna be one of my, questions like what is
what is the hardest what is the hardest transition working
with kids that are talented but don't want to do
the work of parents that are, Unrealistic like what what
for you as a? Trainer what what is that or
coach you, know trainer hand, Coach like what's what's the
biggest thing for you when it comes.
Speaker 1 (40:24):
To, that like your biggest spec peeve or the thing
that you find most.
Speaker 2 (40:27):
Difficult, well some of the parents are, unrealistic but, really
if you work, realistic you know. What they just can't
stomach that because IF i could do, it we're going.
On They if they motherfuckers put in eighty, percent they
can get, there you. Understand but they don't want. To
(40:47):
they don't want to stomach. It they don't want to challenge.
It they don't want to do the stuff behind the,
scene you. Know like What i'm, saying What i'm doing
my dribbling, drills and it comes next a week from
week from, now these motherfuckers still sucking up on the
same dribbles.
Speaker 1 (41:02):
Drill that means they're not on there and. Walk they're not,
walking be patting that.
Speaker 2 (41:06):
Motherfucker they're Not they're not doing, it you know What
i'm saying at. All and once they come, there they
think it's only work when they come to you, know to,
practice you, know because you know the real characters.
Speaker 1 (41:17):
What they had. Seen SO i, mean.
Speaker 2 (41:21):
The KIDS i can coach if they let me push,
him because how does the kids you have to push
like like mostly all the talent, Kids i'm, Like i'm
crazy on like Hed doug McDaniel that played for, me
At memphis and a kid Named Roan brumbar Yet. TULANE
i just saw they both MAKE uh preseason First Team
(41:46):
All conference And doug, mother you, know she sent it
to him and, everything AND i was, like BUT i was,
like think ABOUT i was crazy on, them those two
kids THAT i might was the hardest, on you, know
a Little doug beause he was a small dog wrong
because he was a white boy From. GEORGETOWN i told,
him you're a white, boy this you. Underdog you like
(42:08):
me now in the, game you know What i'm. Saying
So i'm, like you gotta go hard every single. Day
And doug was a small point. GUARD i told him
the same. Thing you be, faster got defend ninety four.
Feet and you, know people doubted, them and like you,
say they PLAYING d one. Basketball Oh, Doug doug.
Speaker 4 (42:27):
Tough my my, son my son used to run with
him when he did the when he did the UH i,
forget but him and him and my son played, it
played ball together a little bit and against each other
with uh, damn what IS i can't even man ce
t is real over.
Speaker 1 (42:48):
Here But doug is. Tough yeah, yeah, oh p yb
on my. Bad he Was they played in the p
ybl together ye, yep. Yep mm.
Speaker 2 (43:00):
Hmmm so, So, dougie if you, can uh so explain
to our viewers and listeners about some of the basketball
uh what would you call it academies or programs that
you're associated. WITH i know you have Your Prospect University
(43:20):
academy and then you also being associated with The Washington
warriors and Also Bethel. Academy can you explain to our
views and listeners about those different basketball? Academies, well, yeah,
well my my baby Is Prospect University. Academy don't for
(43:42):
the kids that really want to get in the mud
and develop underdog kids that not worrying about the, circuit
you know at that because you know, kids they weren't
about the shoe circuit in the eighth.
Speaker 1 (43:57):
Grade, seventh you, Know AND i really don't matter at that.
Speaker 2 (44:01):
Age the only THING i care about really sixteen and
seventeen is when't come to the.
Speaker 1 (44:04):
Circuit but that's why you SAY i coached. Seventeens you know.
Speaker 2 (44:10):
A lot of parents they don't understand, that you, know, so, uh.
Speaker 1 (44:15):
It's it's to, me that's that's that's that's WHAT i.
GRIND i really grind there BECAUSE i try to get
the kids up and you.
Speaker 2 (44:25):
Prospect You LIKE i, said it was, INDEPENDENT i HAD
i had kids that was top one HUNDRED espn WHEN
i was, independent you know so and it was a,
doubtful a lot of doubt where people always try to,
snatch you, know snatch kids from. Me and it was
always or the independent kids can't be top one HUNDRED.
Speaker 1 (44:42):
Espn they can't go be.
Speaker 2 (44:43):
One AND i was through every, time you, know so
every year through Uh beth Through.
Speaker 1 (44:49):
Beth through's great.
Speaker 2 (44:51):
Situation you, Know i'm not coaching in no, more BUT
i still help, out you, know my guy who's the
owner of the, school and it's just giving you a
different you. Know they they got a great LIKE ai.
Program you, know they got their academically for the. Kids you,
know you got quantic movement they do do all the
strength and, conditioning and they got skill. Work they do
(45:14):
the skill work with m V. M so it's it's
it's it's. Good and then you see a lot of
other schools doing it right now. Too you know a
lot of these private schools they online and kids are
playing more you, know more. Basketball they're playing like a heavy.
Schedule and Then Washington. WARRIORS i think a beatas to,
me but the best circuit BECAUSE i, think uybl you
(45:41):
see kids forty and, all come, On, god ain't nobody
scored forty and all that on? Me BUT i think
it's more show they know who you, are who you
are any, Talented but it's just it's more it's, man
they locking. Up you got The indian and elites and
the woman, Olders new world man pumped the magic the.
(46:06):
Game it's tough like that'll be the circuits, tough you, know.
Sative so that's WHY i like that. Circuit you, Know
i've seen the eyb L.
Speaker 1 (46:14):
It's, okay but and most of time The motherbuckers.
Speaker 2 (46:17):
Be ducking, ducking the all around ducking duck and don't
want to play other, team you, know so they think they're,
here you. Know and then WHEN i played, Him i'm
always busting their. Ass so, Right, yeah we had a
we had a young man on this show not too
too long ago THAT i believe that you're associated, With Darius.
Speaker 1 (46:40):
Bibvens.
Speaker 2 (46:42):
YEAH i can't describe his describe his game and what
you're seeing him BECAUSE i think HE i, mean he
was a very very sharp young man when we spoke with.
HIM u we saw his tape in terms of the
way he. Played he was so composed and you, know under,
control played at his own.
Speaker 1 (47:01):
Speed but what do you see from young?
Speaker 2 (47:03):
Days young, boy don't get food with the babyface mm
hm who he is, straight dog the whole. Time dog
like when he first his father first brought him in
the gym with, me like like fifth, grade and you're
talking about he foaming from the. Mouth i'm working, them
(47:23):
like working. Them and he never gave. Up he never
gave up at. All he's the type of. Kid he's so.
Speaker 1 (47:32):
Bad so you might catch.
Speaker 2 (47:36):
Him around around his way just at the part might
be playing against some. Randoms he just hooping the whole.
Time he hooping with old heads at the, gym at the.
Gym so really with, him it was just more of
playing him. UP i always playing. Up he was eighth.
GRADE i was playing him at. Sixteens so that's why
(47:57):
it was so easy for him to come straight on
the d the circuit and win sixteens THREE sb on
the first year you, know coming. There but his game
is is real pace BECAUSE i told, him you have
to play a lot of. Basketball you, know when em
when he's Young it's. Crazy we just finished winn the
championship On. Vegas that was his last game with. Me
(48:18):
and it's funny that he said. That he sent me
a long, text was, like, man this WAS i remember
when you first told, me if you fall in love with,
diversity you're gonna be the best point guard you, know
in the area and top point guard in the. Nation
(48:39):
and he remembered THAT i told him BECAUSE i was
working on BECAUSE i, saw you know the same. Thing you,
know they looking at him being, small so you got
to be a. Dog but he got LIKE i was
teaching him how to play with that pace and understand them.
Angles shorty got, it, Man, like he got, it you,
know and he's still.
Speaker 1 (49:00):
Work he. Humbled he humbled.
Speaker 2 (49:01):
Too he like he don't even think that he's he's,
there you, know because his main thing he wanted to
get to that you, know.
Speaker 1 (49:09):
He wanted to get to that. Leade you, know he
want to be good in that.
Speaker 2 (49:11):
Lead so young, man, younger, yeah, y'all y'all got one
l B a Y'all, yeah.
Speaker 1 (49:21):
Yeah for, Sure, sure go, ahead. Coach so let's let's
go back a little. Bit so when you when you
went to your prep.
Speaker 4 (49:28):
School can can you share with the viewers BECAUSE i
know we bring it up every now and then with with.
Speaker 1 (49:33):
Gods what did you think about the?
Speaker 4 (49:35):
Competition that's a lot of people don't Give prep And juco?
Speaker 1 (49:39):
Respect what?
Speaker 4 (49:40):
What what did you think about the competition when you
got to The prep The prep.
Speaker 2 (49:44):
School man colletition was, crazy like it was really, Good
like you, know you're playing against m C i with
your ten you, know, Uh Saint Thomas moore ches like
everybody was in that, league Like Ed coder was that
same more, man if you had you had players.
Speaker 1 (50:02):
Everywhere it was it. Was it was because it was
a smaller. Pool it.
Speaker 2 (50:08):
Was it was really cove if you if you act
like you heard you gotta go to the trainer, man
you might have your spot taking from you the next you,
know next, day motherfuckers coach train were Like i'm gonna
dig it out right quick BECAUSE i don't.
Speaker 1 (50:26):
Want my, taking you.
Speaker 2 (50:27):
Know and then you know how Tough jucos Was like
kids now won't even go To. Juico i'm, like what
you talking? About they don't even want to.
Speaker 4 (50:36):
Go To juco scared of the competition because they dogs.
Speaker 1 (50:42):
There you, KNOW i won't SAY i won't say.
Speaker 4 (50:44):
Competent they scared of the reality of competition because all
of them think THAT d one players and they feel
like if you go to if you go TO juco
and you don't, perform that you don't. Belong like, nah
that's the furthest thing from truth there. Is it's a
lot OF d one prospects AT. JUCO a lot have
to go. There I'm i'm A i'm A JUCO d
three dude, man AND i stand on that ship all day.
(51:05):
Long we used to go To Virginia tech and whoop
their ass. Ship say what you want to?
Speaker 1 (51:10):
Say brand off MAKING i think Be richmond on the.
Speaker 2 (51:16):
Screen mm, hmmm this might. Be wasn't the fives that's,
it you, know big man. Whatever but the guards and
all Some i'm kind of saying a little bit, coach
you know What i'm. Saying they just be more you,
know deeper physical at the floor in the. Fives But
i'm trying to get more kids because how we're in
the portal right, now go to junior.
Speaker 1 (51:36):
College come, on. Y'all i'm just sitting there like.
Speaker 2 (51:41):
This it's it's just a road like Because i'm not
REALLY i don't care about like keep on the.
Speaker 1 (51:47):
Portal i'm okay with the.
Speaker 2 (51:49):
Portal like be, Honest i'm okay with the portal because
now You michael weed the motherfuckers.
Speaker 1 (51:54):
Ain't really really you, know really really want to play.
Speaker 2 (51:58):
Basketball you could weed them out, NOW i, mean come,
on we had we had to deal with THAT sat coming.
Up that was a, roadblock you, know but we still be, like, man,
whatever send me To Saint, jack send me to, here
send me everybody still was.
Speaker 1 (52:12):
Going how much the base you send? Everybody? Juko, yeah
send the right To Saying. Jack. Yeah SO i don't.
Speaker 2 (52:20):
THINK i don't think the portal is a big you
know What i'm. Saying it's not a big. Deal it's
a weeding out process. Too like you, know they they
some of these kids don't want to. Play they feel
if they go to these top private schools around here
that they're PAYING i don't they're paying four thousand a
month FOR i ain't going to know junior. College, okay
(52:40):
then just go to regular. School, now that's WHAT i
tell because go to regular. School you know that hoop
dreams you will go to a juco then work your way. Up,
YEAH i think they're not used to working their way
up no, more like you going from this court to
that court to this. Court they're not used doing it no.
More they just handed to. Them so that's why they
(53:05):
feel like they can't go a different route no. More you,
know a tough, route. Mh and to both of your,
POINTS i, think, Man i've always been an advocate of
prep school AND juco BECAUSE i think that's truly your transition,
coming you, know coming from.
Speaker 1 (53:23):
Being a boy to a. Man you know WHAT i.
Mean it makes you tough in all.
Speaker 2 (53:26):
Aspects it makes you mentally, tougher you physically tougher. Everything
and then you get to play against people every day
that has the same goals that you, have but also
have the same ability. Level so you out there on
the court and people are pushing you to get better and.
Better and that, way when you do go to a
(53:47):
four year, school you know WHAT i, mean you're ready
to play as soon as you as soon as you
hit the, cabins because you done been through a, combine
so to.
Speaker 1 (53:55):
Speak you've been prepared for that. Moment you know WHAT i.
Speaker 2 (53:58):
Mean WHEN i you, know WHEN i came out Of
virginia public schools and went to a prep, school you,
KNOW i came came into the prep School Virginia player
of The, year you know WHAT i, mean and first
team all met So i'm going out there, like you,
Know i'm about to dog these. Dudes and even THOUGH i,
did don't get me, wrong BUT i saw a whole
(54:20):
different level of. Athlete you, know you had all these
guys coming from all different parts of the, country And i'm, like,
DAMN i DIDN'T i didn't know dudes can jump like,
this OR i didn't know that you had.
Speaker 1 (54:33):
Who was this.
Speaker 2 (54:34):
Strong And i'm, Like i'm Seeing i'm getting the. Benchmark
Now i'm, like, DANG i gotta get my body like.
THIS i gotta change my. BODY i gotta get more,
ATHLETIC i gotta get, QUICKER i gotta get. Faster like,
YEAH i was tall and big and was, skillful BUT
i needed to add all that other stuff to it
BECAUSE i just saw a whole nother level athlete THAT
(54:54):
i was, Like, OKAY i got to catch up to
that or surpass it and do WHAT i need to.
Speaker 1 (54:59):
Do so that's the first TIME i ever got work
in the weight.
Speaker 2 (55:02):
Room that's the first TIME i really started like hitting
the track and running the bleachers and all, that and
by the TIME i came out of Hard.
Speaker 1 (55:10):
Grave, MAN i Felt, MAN i felt. Invincible so you
went To, lee, Right you was At? Lee? Right? YEAH
i was At. Lee, yeah y'all you At Big, Guard Big,
guard you you go? There?
Speaker 2 (55:23):
Yeah, NO i feel you, though because in public, schools,
really especially in the, CITY i started lifting.
Speaker 1 (55:28):
Weights WHEN i got to, COLLEGE i wasn't lifting no damn. Weights,
yeah hooping so, much we ain't had time to lift no, weights.
Speaker 2 (55:37):
RIGHT i, always ALWAYS i listened to people tell, Me,
man you left.
Speaker 1 (55:43):
Ways you know that's gonna mess up your jump.
Speaker 2 (55:45):
Shots SO i used to stay away from it BECAUSE
i used to let, that you, know be in my, head, like,
NAH i ain't gonna lift, ways Then i'm not gonna
be able to. Shoot but you, know you get the
right train and. Everything they train, you, right they train
you for the sport that you. Playing make sure your
flex abilities stay the same and you get strong and
you lean all that good. Stuff but EVERYBODY i know
(56:06):
where through pres, school The juco, route they came out
better on the other, End.
Speaker 1 (56:11):
Yeah BUT i like it.
Speaker 2 (56:13):
STILL i like it better the way we did, it
where we didn't lift that much, weights but we did
a lot of push, ups pull ups and everything else because, now,
hey cod now, man.
Speaker 1 (56:24):
They got these kids lifting weights at eleven and. Twelve, yeah,
man that's too.
Speaker 2 (56:28):
Early like and then they trying to find out why
a kid being its acl and all that, stuff you know.
Early i'm, like y'all have a strength in his, leg
y'all can't be you, know since you got a warehouse
with weights and y'all trying to show all this. Stuff
you got these kids putting weights on, them you, know
at an early age like, that that's that's. Bad and
(56:49):
then they stiff, equilibrium they can't move.
Speaker 1 (56:54):
They's so.
Speaker 2 (56:54):
Big i'm, like come, on, well you gotta stop different. Weights,
man may be thirteen fourteen lifting. Weight i'll be talking
about you're probably going in football.
Speaker 4 (57:02):
Field, Yeah and it's crazy because, you LIKE i, SAID
i train a lot of youth here AND i start them.
Speaker 1 (57:08):
Young BUT i do exactly.
Speaker 4 (57:10):
THIS i go bands and, bars you, KNOW i go
from bands to, bars AND i don't care if they've
lifted up because a lot of times you have coaches
and you got these guys that say their strem coaches
and conditioned, coaches but they you watch how the kids
come in and they perform the things that they've. Learned
they're getting taught the wrong. Things they don't even know
how to protect themselves to lift by. Themselves so for,
(57:32):
Me i'm, like if you, can't if you can't do
the body weight version of it and then transition to
the band, Version i'm not putting no weights in your
hand because if the, resistance if you can't handle the
resistance of the added weight that is supposed to, be
how you.
Speaker 1 (57:46):
Going to handle a solid fifteen pound.
Speaker 4 (57:49):
Dumbbell and then a lot of times when you training, kids,
man they get into this ego, thing, like, brother we
can do the same thing with ten and fifteen pounds
that we can do with twenty five.
Speaker 1 (57:56):
Pounds what we're, Trying i'm not training your.
Speaker 4 (57:59):
Ego try to get, better and you gotta maintain because
if you, lift if you don't do the lifting, right
you're gonna plateau.
Speaker 1 (58:06):
Anyway so what are we?
Speaker 4 (58:07):
Doing so you definitely have to be smart about who's
doing your training and what they're training for because at
the end of the, day, if like you, said if
it don't fit the.
Speaker 1 (58:17):
Sport that you're, doing then what are we?
Speaker 4 (58:20):
Doing and then if you can't if you can't keep
a kid, healthy why are we doing? It because that's the, point,
Right let's get them to the season so they can
perform for the. Season you can't have kids out with
back issues because you. Don't you didn't try to have
them do hand. CLEANS i, Know, like, bro you can't
do a hand. Clean you got.
Speaker 1 (58:39):
It it's, dudes it's.
Speaker 4 (58:40):
Universes it takes six months to teach the correct way
to do a hand. Clean how you how you got
to mess around with hand cleans in your in your
gym and then you can't explain why he can't, move
or why his back, hurt or why his hips hole the,
line or why the stiffs like you gotta know what you're.
Speaker 2 (58:56):
Doing that comes back where we say about you got
the trainers and you got the. Teachers you, know LIKE
i always tell, kids waits get you, bigger but calisthetics get.
Speaker 1 (59:12):
Stronger you.
Speaker 2 (59:13):
Know WHEN i was At, blow we had a kid
In Anthony livers to end up finishing In Texas.
Speaker 1 (59:18):
Tech it was so. Funny this kid never look man
this he might be the funniest story he.
Speaker 2 (59:24):
HAD i have a. Coach this. Kid we went to
we playing in a little summer.
Speaker 1 (59:29):
Fall league last for a. Second it was before the season.
Speaker 2 (59:37):
Started we just saving little trials and the and the
kid come down to make a, crazy a crazy pass
behind the.
Speaker 1 (59:44):
Back there's something crazy and turned it over And i'm, like,
younger what are you.
Speaker 2 (59:48):
Doing i'm, like he, like sixty five look sixty five
three hundred pounds.
Speaker 1 (59:54):
Right five three Hundred And i'm, like.
Speaker 2 (59:56):
Man you, man WHATEVER aau team you came, From, younger
now we don't do.
Speaker 1 (01:00:00):
That he, like we were talking ABOUT i ain't never PLAYED.
Speaker 2 (01:00:04):
Aau WHEN i, said whatever club ball you came, from he,
LIKE i ain't never played no club. Ball then he,
SAID i, said, Man i'm getting. FRUSTRATED i, said wherever
wreck you came, FROM i ain't never played rec. Ball
this kid was just. Brow he was Just he lived
On MALCOLM x right on the point by That Popeye's
MALCOLM x And Martin Luther king right. There so he
(01:00:26):
was just on the on the. Playground So i'm, like,
huh And i'm saying and then he came down here
three straight and did the little shape left?
Speaker 1 (01:00:34):
Me? MAN i asked my, BROTHER i, said, man is
this damn kid right? Here he don't got no grades
don't have no, grades and he, SAID i got. Grades
and finally it was.
Speaker 2 (01:00:44):
Two it was two ambolphicents that went to the school
and this joker here man ended up going To Texas.
Tech but he was three hundred. Pounds but this kid
in the weight, room what happened was this. ONE i
really and it's just off of my. EXPERIENCE i was
just trying to because he couldn't lift. Nothing we might
(01:01:06):
have like the forty five pounds with two twenty five's on,
it of twenty five pounds on, it and this joker,
man he couldn't even lift. It SO i, said you
know what what we're gonna do for a. Month we're
gonna run the, Bleaches.
Speaker 1 (01:01:20):
We're gonna do push, ups and we're gonna try to
put you on the pull up. Ball this no lie.
Speaker 2 (01:01:25):
Coach after, that a month, later this cat was putting
two forty fives on.
Speaker 1 (01:01:34):
Anything and just throwing that.
Speaker 2 (01:01:35):
Shit so THAT'S i really found out, that you, know
because my old head told, me, dude, jail dude that
do calisthetics all the. Time he told me that people
who do calisthetics are you, know they are stronger us
that lift. Weights and then when he came up weight,
room he was just throwing. It me just getting them
in shape and doing the. Calisthetics he just killed, it
(01:01:58):
you know What i'm. Saying and this, kid same. THING
i sent him to a prep school after that because
he was behind a little, bit and he ended up
every double digits At Texas. TENT a kid that never
PLAYED aau, RECALL i. Think but his parents weren't. Involved
see that's The. See now the, parents you try to
go through all that hell with a, kid now their,
parents you, know parents are sitting there writing, practice watching.
(01:02:19):
Everything they can't stomach it their, kids you, know tears
coming out of their eyes because they you, KNOW i
got them running heels and stuff like.
Speaker 1 (01:02:27):
That but some of the cattle.
Speaker 2 (01:02:29):
Blew their parents barely made it to the you, know
like this barely made it to the.
Speaker 1 (01:02:33):
Games you know What i'm, Saying like our, parents you.
Speaker 2 (01:02:35):
Know SO i think that the old school way of
doing it is the better way because too many, injuries,
man way too many fucking injuries on. Kids that's fucking.
SIXTEEN i still ain't never had a major injury to this. Day,
wow you, know AND i barely left. WEIGHTS i didn't
(01:02:56):
touch no DAMN i ain't really touch no weight even
WHEN i got to, college WHEN i was gonna push
up And i'm going for four hundred push up. Today
man sets bot, bom bo't, bom you know What i'm.
Saying SO i wouldn't even AND i didn't want to
Do it's, crazy BUT i didn't want to do bench
press because the old head told ME i never saw
a dude with a big chest that can.
Speaker 1 (01:03:15):
Shoot you. Know he told me that because he, said
you got you got big. Chests you you out.
Speaker 2 (01:03:23):
Here shooting the, ball you, know thinking about him looking
At Anthony mason and shot all them big, dudes they
really couldn't shoot that, well you, know that's a good.
Speaker 1 (01:03:32):
Point so, yeah so so doub for can y'all hear? Me? Yeah,
okay that's all of OUT a lot of, stuff a
lot of a lot of.
Speaker 2 (01:03:45):
Stuff men with this basketball came with experience, too you,
know and acting the different old heads and all, that
because you, know history to me is my biggest, teacher you, Know,
yeah for. Sure so so we got a lot of
pair of aaron and kids give?
Speaker 1 (01:04:01):
Up what would you say to?
Speaker 2 (01:04:05):
Them For for those parents and kids who have dreams
of being a division one ball player or. Beyond, well
what advice did you give them in terms of how
to handle their kids and to get them to where
they want to get get them To can you hear?
Us can can you HEAR i think we lost six
(01:04:31):
volume over? There, yep we can hear, Us, Kim, yeah
we can hear. You can you hear?
Speaker 1 (01:04:42):
Us hear? Y'all now okay.
Speaker 2 (01:04:45):
Back, so so that's WHAT i was asking you IS
i can't HEAR. Covid you can't hear. ME i can't hear.
You thank you can hear? Coach ask you? Question can
you hear? Me can you hear?
Speaker 1 (01:04:58):
Me? COACH i can hear? You.
Speaker 4 (01:05:01):
Okay so What cobe was asking was for the, parents
for the parents of some of your athletes or that
are listening that of kids that have aspirations.
Speaker 1 (01:05:10):
Go do you want or? Beyond what advice would you give?
Speaker 4 (01:05:13):
Them you, know as far as you know what's the
correct way to get him in get him in line
to do. That it's one thing to say you want to,
go but what you, know what advice would you get
them to actually help get them?
Speaker 2 (01:05:25):
There, well the main Thing i'm telling them is you
gotta work hard behind the.
Speaker 1 (01:05:31):
Scene that's number.
Speaker 2 (01:05:32):
One and you gotta be able to stomach that adversity
because it's going to be more adversity and downs than.
Speaker 1 (01:05:39):
Ups you.
Speaker 2 (01:05:39):
Know that's why when we win a, championship we celebrate.
Hard you, know when you hit them win a, shot
you celebrate. Hard but most of the times it's a.
Down but you have to fall in love with them.
Downs like with me coming, up LIKE i, SAID i
never really looked at me having you know What i'm,
saying like a disability that wasn't that was even you,
(01:06:01):
know like my name that my nickname Is, zuno that's
BECAUSE i had one on you, know added on.
Speaker 1 (01:06:06):
Me so you got to embrace who you. Are What,
god you, know you know What i'm.
Speaker 2 (01:06:11):
Saying bless you With LIKE i look at myself being like,
THIS i look at it as a, blessing you. Know
SO i don't look at it as because there's so
many strengths THAT i, have you, know so called having
a disability that you.
Speaker 1 (01:06:23):
Know you know how sometime when they.
Speaker 2 (01:06:24):
Say a guy that's, blind he can he can he
can smell, better he can feel something. Better it's the
same thing he gives, you give you different, gifts so
you know and don't care about what nobody, no no one's.
Speaker 1 (01:06:41):
Thinking, man, no especially you do everything for the glory Of.
Speaker 2 (01:06:45):
God like that's ALL i can tell, Him like it
was a story LIKE i learned a lot over At
Blue it was a kid named kid Named Duante, thomas
d one. Player he uh asked me one, day he, said, man,
coach how did you play? Basketball AND i was confused
what he was. Saying i'm, like what you're talking?
Speaker 1 (01:07:03):
About HOW i?
Speaker 2 (01:07:04):
MEAN i worked, HARD i was, Talented and you, Know he's, like,
NAH i ain't talking about. That i'm talking about you
just walking in the, gym you, know everybody be looking at.
Speaker 1 (01:07:12):
You AND i was, like. Huh you, KNOW i was
confused what he was.
Speaker 2 (01:07:16):
Saying but THEN i had to look at it a
different way of other. People some people probably care about
how you look and how you. Know different people have
probably have a. Disability it's some people that walk, different you,
know tall. Guys they feel. Insecure BUT i told, them, like,
man you do everything for the glory Of. God, man
because don't care if you're, cooking don't care if you
(01:07:37):
have a bad. Game people don't always have something to.
Say and now we're dealing with, that with The, instagram
with the social. Media these, kids if they ain't getting no,
likes they think they're not.
Speaker 1 (01:07:46):
Good, Yeah i'm.
Speaker 2 (01:07:48):
Like, huh so we're dealing with that right now with
a lot of. Kids so don't care about what nobody.
Thinks shit won't look ugly from the. Beginning and that's
the type of COACH i. AM i want this stuff
to look ugly because we're GONNA i tell, everybody we're
gonna slice their neck in the, end when you get that,
scholarship that's where you you, know you slice their neck
and show them, like look all the hard WORK i was,
(01:08:09):
Doing it all paid, off you. Know so try to
not care about what nobody's. Thinking and sometimes even your.
Parents it's hard to, say but even your, parents because
they're gonna they these parents are worrying about because it
sold you for.
Speaker 1 (01:08:22):
Them they weren't about their.
Speaker 2 (01:08:24):
Friends if their kids go you, know twenty, five if
they go to you know the map and they got
the stick on their. Car you, know it's real social
for the. Parents, MAN i think it's more social for
the parents than the. Kids but because they got a
break on their, kids you, know they brag a lot
and How.
Speaker 1 (01:08:46):
I'm gonna do.
Speaker 2 (01:08:47):
That she didn't brag on you, know she raised all
them boys now, boys she didn't brag on none of,
us you. Know oh she would brag on. Somebody my
friends want to brag on brag on, us you.
Speaker 1 (01:08:59):
Know so that's that's WHAT i can tell.
Speaker 2 (01:09:01):
Him if they try to go to that next level
and brick by, brick it's gonna look. Ugly but keep
on getting up every, day you, know like IF i
could do this ship with one. Arm you know What i'm,
Saying lock him, mentally because that's the. Mostly if you
lock him, mentally you're gonna be, straight you. Know mm hmmm,
yeah can Can can you hear me, Now?
Speaker 1 (01:09:23):
Doug? Uh he still can't hear? You hear?
Speaker 2 (01:09:28):
Me, YEAH i don't know what you got from? Coke hear,
me BUT i can't hear you.
Speaker 1 (01:09:33):
Now it's gonna transition this over the rapid, fire so
he we're gonna we usually do.
Speaker 4 (01:09:41):
It we do a game at the, End we do
a Segment doug at the end where we do a
rapid fire and it's you, know it's we try to
make it, hard but it shouldn't be real. Hard it's
just you, know whatever whatever comes to, you whatever your
your first, instinct your thought, is your opinion. Is so
we're gonna try to make it as difficult but fun
as we. Can, So, Cob i'm, Gonna i'm, Gonna i'm
(01:10:02):
gonna try to transition for.
Speaker 1 (01:10:04):
You what do you what's your question for? Him? Cole
so you know.
Speaker 2 (01:10:09):
We're gonna start, with well with the easy, ones warm them, Up,
doug can you hear?
Speaker 3 (01:10:13):
Me?
Speaker 1 (01:10:13):
Now? NO i still. Can't all, right so let's start
off with TRY i. Can't i'll get, Him i'll get
him over to.
Speaker 2 (01:10:24):
You so let's start off with uh start being to
Cut Uh Jordan's kobe Le.
Speaker 4 (01:10:32):
Broun so he liked to start with we do a
thing segment called start bencher.
Speaker 1 (01:10:37):
Cut So jordan's Uh kobe Or, lebron and this the
start benchal. Cut, yeah start you.
Speaker 4 (01:10:49):
Can't you can't already hear? Him so it don't don't
get cut off. Now i'm gonna just tell you that right,
NOW i.
Speaker 1 (01:10:54):
Don't Go you're gonna cut you straight? Off go, ahead.
Speaker 2 (01:10:58):
Stark jordan's Bench kobe and Cut. Lebron you out of, Here.
Doug all, right you don't see his, Reaction look at
(01:11:22):
HIM i Like Lebron, longevilly But i'm a killer.
Speaker 1 (01:11:27):
MAN i like killers.
Speaker 4 (01:11:28):
Man so we just so we just me and him
just had a little little back and forth the other
day WHEN i think they was talking about the one
on one stuff and.
Speaker 1 (01:11:40):
He, know he Know Cobe.
Speaker 4 (01:11:41):
Norman, SEE i love this because he can't say nothing right.
NOW i can only hear. Him you can't hear but
but the piece that, again LIKE i, Said i'm A
i'm A i felt Like lebron is probably physically the
most gifted basketball player That i've ever seen with my
mom two like physically, gifted and that was my only
(01:12:02):
qualm with. Him, Man like we were talking about the
one on one, stuff like it was so many times
in a game and where he could just go down
and physically, dominate but.
Speaker 1 (01:12:11):
He chose to. Sometimes you, KNOW i get.
Speaker 4 (01:12:14):
It he's a very cerebral player and he's A i
don't know.
Speaker 1 (01:12:18):
If he's a COLD i, mean, Yeah cob would have
to correct me on this.
Speaker 4 (01:12:22):
One BECAUSE i don't know If lebron considers himself a
past first type of guy or he just he's just
AN iq, guy. Right he's he's very, true he understands a.
Game but, sometimes, man just keep the shit. Simple get
your ass down in the, paint dominate there because it
ain't too many people that can guard him because he's
too gifted down. There even if it is him making
a move to, DISH i just think he garnered more
(01:12:46):
fear with him inside the paint Versus i'm not worried
about him. Hitting he done hit a lot of game
winning shots over his. Career But I'm i'm if he
hit that, Shot i'm cool with. That i'm never, REMEMBER
i never. Forget we was at The wizard's. Game he
shot that damn shot and in my daughter's. Lap but
we're we're okay with him shooting, that but we. Were
we not comfortable With lebron is for, me anyway you
(01:13:09):
put that dude anywhere on the, post it ain't no,
competition there ain't no. Question and for, me he just
let too many people off the. Hook and so for,
me that's Why i'm mad at With. Lebron he just
didn't Have AND i try to be careful WHEN i
say he didn't have a killer's, mentality because the, dude
the dude is a. Dog but just the way he,
played he let a lot of people off the hook
(01:13:30):
and he could have that that six seven eight nine
ring because he was just that he's just that physically,
dominant which he showed just from his longevity. Itself so for,
me that's that's my only QUEM i got with. Him
but you, can't you. Can't you can't knock the dude's
career at. All he is a go you, know just
not go Ahead like.
Speaker 2 (01:13:51):
You, said IT'S iq and it's physically. Physical he's physical.
Gifted but he got. Cheated AND i having the great,
coaches he got. Cheated you, KNOW i have the great.
Coaches jordan's and and And, kobe they had all the great.
Coaches you know What i'm saying that angles BECAUSE i
was just watching the game With mike playing against.
Speaker 1 (01:14:10):
The lakers in like eighty eighty.
Speaker 2 (01:14:13):
Eight Somebody mike had like eight, turnovers but he was
that was letting him do what he. Do but then
once it got with feel everything cut. Down you see
What i'm.
Speaker 4 (01:14:23):
Saying, Yeah, yeah So i'm gonna GET i got one for,
you and it's it's not a start venture cut it
is give me your top five guards from THE dc.

rave About Stacey. Robinson, yeah he's a legend and another
(01:16:24):
one that that you hear a lot about in terms
of the best one of the best guards or maybe
the best guard to come out OF dc Is Will.
Speaker 1 (01:16:31):
Jones yeah you know WHAT i. Mean you heard me down? Here, Now,

Speaker 1 (01:16:53):

Speaker 2 (01:17:33):

Speaker 2 (01:17:41):
Hmm, no if you're talking about, Culture greg And, mouchie
they was putting on the show At, Cadozer yeah for.
Speaker 1 (01:17:48):
Sure.
Speaker 2 (01:17:49):
Yeah who would you say your top five players out
OF dc or THE dmv that didn't make it to
the league that you thought in your. Mind he was,
like that's a pro but they just didn't make it
for whatever.
Speaker 1 (01:18:05):
Reason h.
Speaker 2 (01:18:09):
Kurk Kurt smith, Again stacy mm, Hmmm, Sabella Greg, jones.
Speaker 1 (01:18:24):
Hen We all mm hmmm nice, great great cook mm. Hmm,
okay who are another start bench you? Cut?
Speaker 2 (01:18:40):
Question start bench you? Cut Michael, Vick Lamar, Jackson Cam?
Newton Stop Michael? Vick uh about? THAT i have to
(01:19:00):

Lamar Michael, Big lamar And Cam? Lamar bench Cut Cam?
Newton who you saved? YOURSELF i thought he was out

Speaker 2 (01:19:28):
Was A that was A c plus answer this. Guys,
lamar you fan some, tests but you Know I'm. Lamar
but BUT i ain't gonna Lie Michael. BIG i was
A Michael big guy, Too so That Michael big playing right?
Now how the game has, changed but you can't hit
no all the crazy?
Speaker 1 (01:19:47):
Stuff so who you? Who you think That i'm still
taking all three of? Them? Ship you? KNOW i mean?
Speaker 2 (01:19:55):
YOU i, MEAN i, mean, look we just to clarify
all three of. Them my elite are. Great that's why
they even in the, question you know What i'm, saying
somebody gonna be the odd man.
Speaker 1 (01:20:06):
OUT i get.
Speaker 2 (01:20:07):
It but all three of, them if you just like
What lamar doing, now he Can lamar and WIN mvp
every single. Year that's how dominant he. Is AND i
Think Michael vic And Cam newton will be doing the same.
Speaker 4 (01:20:19):
THING i think the only thing that sets some apart
IS i think out of all three of them, DUDES
i Think vic probably has the strongest. ARM i don't
Think cam's arm strength is anywhere near either one of those.
GUYS i, mean could he could throw the, Ball but
Fucking Vic. Bro they were showing him yesterday one of
the throws he. Made he threw that this's.
Speaker 1 (01:20:39):
Tough three people just on the money and like his
arm strength is.
Speaker 4 (01:20:45):
Crazy crazy commercial list too they.
Speaker 1 (01:20:49):
Did they did a crazy commercial with.
Speaker 4 (01:20:51):
HIM i THINK i brought up one time Before coche
where he threw the ball and hit the dude and
knocked him out of the. Stadium what people didn't realize
that's throw was, Real like that throw was. Real it's
just they animated the last part of him knocking somebody
out the.
Speaker 1 (01:21:05):
Stairs but that that throw he made when real throw
that dude's armstring was.
Speaker 4 (01:21:10):
Phenomenal and then you put the fact that he could
pull up this down and take Off, Mike mike was. Phenomenal, man.
Phenomenal mike, Different mike different for. Sure another start bench
and Cut Doug Urban, Coalition kenner, Lead Goodman, league.
Speaker 1 (01:21:39):
M, Hm.
Speaker 2 (01:21:45):
Urban, coalition Start Goodman, league bench and cut Uh Kenner. League,
man and you ain't never like that Old Urban. Coalition
bro ain't nothing like.
Speaker 1 (01:22:08):
It. Man, man you walk in the dumb ball, man
just the.
Speaker 2 (01:22:11):
Energy soon as you walk through those, doors, man grab
a couple of that good. Lemonade there could be. Nothing
it wouldn't be because the pros. Played the pros did
to come, out you. Know, oh they came out in
droves back then yeah and then, yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:22:37):
Every.
Speaker 2 (01:22:37):
Y'all GILBERT i played Against, GILBERT i played The Shawn,
Steeves we played against.
Speaker 1 (01:22:42):
All you, know we played against all the, pros you. Know.
Speaker 2 (01:22:46):
Yeah thing like in THE i think The Gunman. League
the pros come, out but it's, sporadic you know WHAT i.
Mean you get them, here you get them. There but
at The Urban, coalition they would stay at every single,
weekend every single game and you and it was no
limit to what type of stars you would see walk in that.
BUILDING i, MEAN i MEAN i can still, remember like
(01:23:08):
it was yesterday when When Penny hadaway was there on
the on.
Speaker 1 (01:23:12):
The island with G.
Speaker 2 (01:23:13):
Jones, yep, man that was that was something to. See, yeah,
yeah for SURE.
Speaker 1 (01:23:23):
I got one for. You give me your top give
me your top Five Go go band uh of All?
Time or how do you want how do you want
to let out back?
Speaker 2 (01:23:41):
Yard you, know we all grew up together, backyard, yep,
essence jump and pump. LETTERS i can't argue with. That
(01:24:02):
add ALL.
Speaker 1 (01:24:06):
I. WAS i was on the.
Speaker 4 (01:24:07):
TRUCK i was in The Chuck moved. ALL i Had
chuck playing in the gym all last. Week my kids, like,
coach what do we shut?
Speaker 1 (01:24:13):
Up?
Speaker 4 (01:24:13):
MAN i THINK i have been put together one of
my ribs On instagram With chuck called The MAN i
was in The Chuck moved last.
Speaker 1 (01:24:21):
WEEK i do.
Speaker 2 (01:24:25):
THAT i Played Go go music WHILE i got the
kids in the gym all the. Time, Yeah like they
don't even know what go, IS i tell, Them like
that's why y'all can't get that cross over.
Speaker 4 (01:24:37):
Down like, hey, hey you you said the cross. OVER
i tell him that's why they can't do THEIR.
Speaker 1 (01:24:45):
A skips and be. Skips.
Speaker 4 (01:24:46):
Can't none of y'all. Ain't none of y'all got no
rhythm for.
Speaker 1 (01:24:51):
Sure.
Speaker 2 (01:24:54):
UH i only got two more rapid fire questions for you.
Done so the first of the two is, uh uh
which one D c or d M.
Speaker 1 (01:25:06):
V what do you mean by? That?
Speaker 2 (01:25:09):
Like how WOULD i how WOULD i describe that? Coach
like do you like you.
Speaker 1 (01:25:16):
Got you got? Me you SEE i gave you the?
Speaker 2 (01:25:18):
Sign like, yeah, no, no this is this is a
question we've asked a hundred hundred. Times so so what
so do you rather like if, somebody let's, say you
out of, town you know WHAT i, Mean and somebody
say where are you? From AND i know you from the?
District so are you going D c or you know
What i'm, Saying i'm from d M. V Oh i'm
(01:25:41):
from D. C, yeah prob tum from uptown mm. Hmm
you know What i'm, Saying, like, yeah that.
Speaker 1 (01:25:48):
Pride there's a lot of pride up, there you.
Speaker 2 (01:25:49):
Know but we're talking in terms of like sports, basketball
not just like basically like where you're, from but like
the SPORTS i guess the sports background or the sports
area that you're. Represented so so you're saying D c
and that d M, v they gotta be d M
v because everything like when we hoop were just in
(01:26:11):
hoop and D, c like we'd be up.
Speaker 1 (01:26:14):
Running. SHOOT i remember WHERE i used to be at a.
Speaker 2 (01:26:16):
Lot the whole neighborhood used to be at joint Called
League district back in the. Days, yeah you know that
a lot Of virginia dudes and stuff like that out
there like it was they was. Hooping LIKE i was
telling people like this must be. Crazy virginia had hoopers back.
Then they got hoopers, now But i'm saying they had
real they had some hoopers, hoopers you know What i'm.
(01:26:37):
Saying BECAUSE i remember the Chat Telly, tournament the Mont.
Speaker 1 (01:26:40):
VERNONSON i remember all, them you, know all them jokers.
Speaker 2 (01:26:44):
Playing so we got to say the d M v
because everybody we played each other METROPOLITAN, dmv metropolitan. Area you,
know it was come down, there you, know like you say, Sports, yeah,
yeah MAY i? Agree and and when and when our
ogs that that used to be the old this Show
fredo he he he created that question because you, know
(01:27:05):
for us and Old dog he's another host on the
show right, now AND i think we all had similar.
Experiences it seemed like coming up in and playing hoops or,
football whatever the case may, Be like if you was
from outside the, city it seemed like we didn't get
(01:27:26):
that same, Respect, like oh, man you Know virginia dudes
they saw for all The Montgomery counties dudes that you,
know they they. Saw so you know when you came
across the, bridge you, know all of those guys had
a chip on their, shoulder you know WHAT i mean
anytime you, know had an opportunity to play against somebody
that came out OF dc or whatever the case may.
(01:27:49):
Be so that's, why you, know that's why THAT i
think had that question was formulated because a lot of,
times and it's been fifty to fifty of the guests
that we had that's from ACTUAL, dc something to SAY
dc and some say DM. V uh, ME i think
it has to be THE dmv because if you was a,
hooper if you was a, ballplayer one of those, guys
(01:28:11):
you weren't going to end up at the same gym
as everybody. Else whether you're FROM, Dc maryland Or, virginia
y'all all there. Together and you all pushing each, other
you bumping against each other and making the making just
the talent and the basketball hot bed in this area.
Better and and it's because it was a mix of
all of, us not just one particular spot in the
(01:28:34):
area in.
Speaker 1 (01:28:35):
Particular, yeah because many remember you been. District, YEAH i
was BRO i was.
Speaker 2 (01:28:42):
EVERYWHERE i definitely was At Lead, District, Definitely Pentagon, city
running shoe docs gym uh, YEAH i mean you name.
Speaker 1 (01:28:54):
IT i was dead so so.
Speaker 2 (01:28:57):
DEFINITELY i remember when we played, uh matter of, fact
it was that Share tilly, tournament the first round we
Played cardozer and AND i REMEMBER i came out on
the court and so the players over there was, like,
nigga ain't no use From, Virginia, like, yeah.
Speaker 1 (01:29:17):
You had the long, Socks yeah you were. Sweet, YEAH
i ain't.
Speaker 2 (01:29:23):
Know at, FIRST i, said damn slim FROM i Thought
slim was from uh in the city because you know
we had we was wearing all the long.
Speaker 1 (01:29:29):
Socks then you.
Speaker 4 (01:29:30):
Know that's and that's crazy BECAUSE i was a football,
player but, basketball again was our was our right to pass,
it so you. COULDN'T i spent a lot of time
Over alexandria because my aunt and a lot of my
aunts and uncles went TO.
Speaker 1 (01:29:47):
Tc basketball is the only way you could prouse.
Speaker 4 (01:29:49):
It anybody cared nothing about football because you, know you
couldn't really get out there and play like you wanted.
To so basketball had to be the sport that you had,
to you, know prove yourself that you even belonged in
in the, area not on not just on the, court
just in the. Area you can't because that's where everybody
was outside doing. It won't like today where you can
go in and do the video games and. Stuff when
you when you go, somewhere you outside like you. Outside
(01:30:12):
so that's for. Sure, yeah you.
Speaker 2 (01:30:15):
Got another rapid five, question fly ask the last ONE i?
Have Uh, my you Know i'm always hitting with a
