the building. You see it when I used to go
see one of the guys. But I would just make
a certain noise and then they would turn around. They
would know I'm here instead of just yelling your name.

you was when you was at my game.

to see the youngest work.

Speaker 9 (02:41):

anything in the first half and then say something in
the second.

Speaker 7 (02:47):
That way, that way they don't try to do too much, you.

Speaker 8 (02:50):
Know, right, Hey, Cole, what I will say is when
we go to them games, you best believe when them

Speaker 7 (07:55):
I think the Baltimore Ravens game was a good, tough one. Man.
How you feel about Yeah, I want you to start
the show up.

Speaker 9 (08:03):
So many times you've been doing You've been being a
great host, such a great host, man, but I think
it's weak. Let us you know, you just chill out
a little bit and let us answer some questions. Ask
you some questions like how you feel?

Speaker 7 (08:14):
Are you okay?

Speaker 9 (08:15):
Look, you know, no, I'm just I'm serious, Like, you know,
this is tough, man, you know you guys, you know
it's just the worst record in the last ten to
fifteen years or something like that.

Speaker 5 (08:29):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (08:29):
Yeah, it's uh, you know, it's frustrating, especially when you
come into the season with so many expectations. Everybody's list
in Vegas had them favorites to go to the Super
Bowl and all.

Speaker 5 (08:42):
That, and then I mean, you start off the season good.

Speaker 4 (08:45):
I know you had a tough loss first week, but
they were playing good for like two three weeks.

Speaker 5 (08:50):
And then I get it.

Speaker 4 (08:51):
There was a lot of injuries and all that stuff,
but they just tooking those down and I'm just I'm
disappointed and I'm disappointed in and the way they competing,
especially the defensive event. Yeah, they it's like they're getting bullied.
They just laying down. I've never seen the Ravens team
perform like this since I've been been watching him.

Speaker 9 (09:13):
So yeah, well shout out you know here at the
No Cap Sports Show podcast, we do we do know
some people and know some some friends of ours who
we call friends to the show. You might be you
guys might be getting somebody else who is a proven

(09:34):
veteran in the secondary, played in the league now, former
first round pick. I ain't gonna say nothing else, but
he's been working hard at coming off with injury and
doing his thing, and he might be coming and try
to help you guys get a little bit better back
there in that secondary.

Speaker 7 (09:51):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (09:51):
Yeah, I'm looking forward to. We need something to give
us a spot.

Speaker 4 (09:55):
Yeah yeah, yeah, okay, all right, we left, Yeah, so
let's jump right into this thing. So, so Jay, first,
we appreciate you coming on the show and showing the
show some love. It's definitely way pass overdue. You know,

(10:16):
I'm gonna win you on the show for a minute,
so so I'm glad you had to day. So I
just want to get right into it because we a
lot of a lot of our viewers and listeners may
not know that.

Speaker 5 (10:28):
You know, it started off. You know you you was
a hoop style you was you was you was making
a lot of noise in the df V man and
and and little Jay.

Speaker 4 (10:38):
That's what everybody call you. That name was buzzant all
all all around the Beltway. So but before we get
into that, I wanted to go to the beginning where
it started from. So when when when did you When
did somebody put a basketball in your hand? Or when
did you fall in love with basketball and say, hey,
I'm gonna use this as a tool.

Speaker 5 (10:59):
To get me to where I want to go.

Speaker 1 (11:02):
Well, Kobe, you know, just like your dad, my grandfather
was the one who put the basketball in my crib man.
You know, my grandparents raised me. You know, I'm from
the South side of Alexandria right there over there Nanny
j Lee rec Center. My grandfather he worked there, so
it was only natural. It was in walking distance, so

(11:22):
it was only natural that I was gonna be in sports,
some kind of sports.

Speaker 3 (11:27):
It didn't even matter. My grandfather coached your dad, so
he was like, listen. You know, we started off in
trash cans in the backyard, me and my brother and
all the neighbors. You know, we started off like that.
Then we ended up getting these little.

Speaker 1 (11:42):
Mini hoops or many hoops, and then we was at
the wreck every day, and I, you know, I fell
in love with it.

Speaker 7 (11:49):
You know.

Speaker 1 (11:49):
We tried different sports. Football, I loved football, Basketball, Baseball
couldn't do it.

Speaker 3 (11:55):
I was like, nah, you got that one.

Speaker 9 (11:57):
Hey, hey, justin Oh you can't say you love football
and don't say who your team?

Speaker 7 (12:01):
Man? Who are your team?

Speaker 1 (12:02):
Well?

Speaker 3 (12:03):
I love the football. I'm all hoos. I'm straight hoops.

Speaker 7 (12:06):
Now, okay, you do you do you root for a team?
Do you have a team? Do you root for like
a team or not? Really?

Speaker 3 (12:13):
Not really? Man, I used to love I used to
love the Coats.

Speaker 7 (12:16):
Okay.

Speaker 3 (12:17):
I used to love Peyton Manning.

Speaker 7 (12:18):
So there you go. Yeah, I got you, I got you,
got you, got you? Yep, go ahead and finished.

Speaker 3 (12:27):
Oh yeah, so my grandfather. That was a huge influence.
You know, I really I really.

Speaker 1 (12:33):
Didn't know my dad, you know what I mean, you
know how it was back then, But I had my
I had my grandfather and my dad my father figure.

Speaker 3 (12:39):
So he didn't want to put the basketball in my crib.

Speaker 1 (12:42):
And I fell in love with it just you know,
playing in the city, you know, getting a little bit
of attention from the girls, you know, rec versus Red,
versus Charles Houston, Court, Kelly Vernon and all that. So, man,
it just was basketball was what we do in Alexander.
That's what we went in our city. And I just

(13:03):
took it as took it and ran with it.

Speaker 7 (13:06):
Man.

Speaker 3 (13:06):
It just worked hard.

Speaker 5 (13:08):
Yeah, that's also so you did you start off playing?

Speaker 3 (13:13):
Yeah, for sure, for sure.

Speaker 4 (13:15):
So who are who are your tough competitors or the
toughest teams directly during that time.

Speaker 1 (13:22):
Always Charles Houston, because you know, we had to we
had to be ready. We go we go up and
play Charles Houston. You already know what it was gonna be,
come at you hard. It was gonna punky, They're gonna
file you, big dog and the crew.

Speaker 6 (13:36):
They was ready.

Speaker 3 (13:37):
He was ready, and you know, you know growing up
on the South side.

Speaker 1 (13:41):
You know, I come, man, and when it comes to
basketball sports in the city of Alexander, it's a lot
of us in that small, little little section on the
south side. So coming up playing against Mount Vernon court
Kelly Charles Houston, I would say those were the ones
we played against. The club really wasn't when I was
coming up. They had the younger team. You know, Little

(14:03):
Dennis and all though they're the younger teams, but it
was always Mount Vernon. I think Big Eric and all
them Eric Shorts and all of them.

Speaker 3 (14:11):
That was our comp And you know, we all went
to GW.

Speaker 1 (14:13):
So when you man, if they talk trash every day,
we're in school talking trash, Well we're gonna beat all
this weekend, or we're gonna see y'all this weekend.

Speaker 3 (14:22):
We can't wait.

Speaker 1 (14:23):
And that's all we used to do. Man, it was
more for pride back then. So man, the re the
rec League was huge in our development. And you know,
my grandfather, we didn't just stay in the city Alexander. Man,
he took us. He took us out of there. He
took us down to you know, matter of fact, we
were younger. He took us down to Norfolk all the time.
He took us to the trenches to bump and it

(14:45):
always you know, it always made us bring our a game,
and you know, we started to fall in love with basketball.
You know, we had a whole community, which is you know,
it's different now. Man, We had a whole community that
was supporting us. You know, they were like, man, we
you know, they come to the games, they traveled.

Speaker 3 (15:01):
We're like, oh my gosh. We felt like, you know,
rictly felt like like you know, it was like our NBA. Man,
we loved it.

Speaker 4 (15:08):
So so let me ask you something because because something
reminded me. You said something that reminded me of this
when you said that y'all went down to Norfolk and
played the trenches. Right, yeah, I'll play y'all played on
that court, that outside court in the middle of the projects.

Speaker 3 (15:23):
Yes, remember we all we all went together.

Speaker 7 (15:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (15:26):
So so that one year we went down there and
we ran through everybody, right, yep, I'm talking to beating
everybody about thirty forty fifty points.

Speaker 4 (15:35):
So on the other side of the bracket, what's the
what's the team that was from north from that neighborhood.

Speaker 7 (15:41):
Yep, So we.

Speaker 4 (15:42):
Already knew it was gonna be a class in the championship.
So we get to the championship game. So the whole tournament,
it was like ten fifteen, maybe twenty people watching the game. Yeah,
get to the championship game, is pat You got bamas
out there cooking out they at the DJ. Yeah, you
sitting on the roof, say, look it was crazy. So

(16:05):
look we blow them out. We up by like thirty
at halftime.

Speaker 7 (16:11):
Yep.

Speaker 4 (16:12):
Right, come third quarter, they got grown men put jerseys,
dudes from the hood putting on jerseys. Play out that time.

Speaker 5 (16:23):
Bo man, you make another shot, man, I'm gonna knock
you out.

Speaker 7 (16:25):
Slim all this.

Speaker 4 (16:26):
Hey, look it got crazy out there, right, So long
story short, it's about a minute a minute and a
half left in the game.

Speaker 5 (16:36):
We up fifty.

Speaker 7 (16:37):
Yep.

Speaker 4 (16:38):
They got the trophy present presentation, getting prepared and all
that good stuff. Called the timeout coach saying, look as
soon as that clock go zero, you're gonna make a
dashpread to we had we had somebody already a bad
thing on and just like clockwork, man, soon.

Speaker 5 (17:00):
Was the game was done. The whole neighborhood chase.

Speaker 3 (17:05):
Listen, listen, no, I remember that you know get older
than that.

Speaker 7 (17:09):
But I remember that.

Speaker 3 (17:10):
I remember y'all was talking so much trash. And you
know who they bring in the into that conversation.

Speaker 1 (17:15):
Do you remember they were talking about in that conversation
with y'all talking trash back and forth. Yep, yep, it
was like Bubba Chuck and that's all they kept up.
He was like Bubba Chuck. And like I said, you know,
we ain't had social media like we did now, but
we used to always hear that when we went down there,
Bubba Chuck, bubble Chuck, bubble Chuck, bubble Chuck.

Speaker 3 (17:35):
Yeah, man, I definitely remember that. That was amazing that
we played. My grandfather used to find this tournament like
that all the time, and we played outside. We went
all the way out there. The whole tournaments outside, wasn't it.

Speaker 5 (17:46):
Yeah, the whole whole tournament.

Speaker 3 (17:48):
Yep, yep. We played in the younger bracket because we
were younger. Yeah, yeah, for sure, I do remember that, man,
So yeah, I.

Speaker 7 (17:56):
You know, I was.

Speaker 3 (17:58):
We were blessed on the South Side to be that's
what you man.

Speaker 1 (18:00):
My grandfather he treated us like a travel aau team
and he was and he would he would take us
everywhere Petersburg.

Speaker 3 (18:09):
I remember one time, I ain't gonna lie to tell
you this story. I had to tell you.

Speaker 7 (18:12):
Man.

Speaker 3 (18:12):
He took us into surgeon Quarters.

Speaker 10 (18:15):
Right Surgeon Quarters were playing against them dudes, insurgent quarters
in the rec center, Bro, and we had to like,
you know, we we we're gonna go in there, bump
because you know the one thing in the DNV that
we still still getting, you know, still.

Speaker 3 (18:29):
Battle for our respect. You already know how that is
around the DV.

Speaker 1 (18:33):
You know, Virginia's the last part. You know how they
treat us to know the the DNDS. I'm just keeping
it real. But we always had to Yeah, we always
had to have our again. We had to go over
there ready, bro, for real.

Speaker 3 (18:43):
We had to because you know they already date, they
already think they from Virginia or they saw you know what,
but you gotta go.

Speaker 8 (18:52):
So one thing, So, one thing I want the listeners
to know, if they don't already know, is you said
something that I don't think a lot of people understand
because you went to T. C.

Speaker 6 (19:01):
Williams Hospital.

Speaker 8 (19:02):
TC Williams didn't have a crosstown rivalry like a lot
of places do. So what you guys were able to
do was when you were younger, you were battling. You
had your home and away with the corter, Kelly's the
Charles Who's. So you guys were introduced to big time
like competition at a young age because your community was

(19:23):
really behind you guys, because you guys fought for your
little square and that little you know, that little triangle
that's out there. For example, I worked out in Alexander
for a long time at the centers out there, so
I'm very familiar with that area. And even though it
was a football player. Like you said, we nobody really
cared about football. When we had to go play basketball,

(19:45):
we went into Alexander, we went over to around, we
went down, you know, just.

Speaker 6 (19:49):
To get our respects for people knew our name.

Speaker 8 (19:51):
But the things that always appreciated about you guys were
at a young age, you guys had a following and
it was a lot of pride in where you were from.
Even though everybody was from Alexander, you had your little
sections that you guys before you even got the high school,
you guys were very proud about the sections you were in.
And then when you go to high school now you

(20:13):
bring all that pride with you representing TC Williams, which
was known to be a.

Speaker 6 (20:18):
Football program school.

Speaker 8 (20:20):
Now you're bringing all that talent, all that talent into
one area, unlike schools do now they usually try to
break up the talent and they making all these high
schools so they dilute the talent by spreading them out.

Speaker 6 (20:32):
You guys kept all your talent in one area.

Speaker 8 (20:35):
You competed early, and then you compete it with later on,
which again built that reputation. So that was I think
that was always an advantage that you guys had because
you guys were coming with hometown pride and then everybody
played and represented for TC that represented the Alexandria area.

Speaker 5 (20:54):
Yep, yep.

Speaker 1 (20:55):
Trials very very very good. Only people that you know,
really didn't get a chance on what the guys who
didn't have the grades. And you know how that is
in every neighborhood, there's always guys that were really good
and then you know they filter out, and you know,
you guys athletes, you know how it is. You know
a lot of people hit their peak early and they

(21:19):
bigger than everybody else, and then all of a sudden,
everybody start catching up and they just start filtering out.
You know, you know when you got up to TC,
it was like, well, shoot, I'm making it.

Speaker 3 (21:32):
We're gonna, We're gonna have to we boys.

Speaker 7 (21:35):
But hey, Justin, did you did you play with our
cousin Kamal? You played before Kamal or after Kamal?

Speaker 3 (21:40):
I am before I'm the O g my guy.

Speaker 7 (21:46):
Okay, all right, that's what that's what's up. That's what's up.

Speaker 8 (21:49):
So speaking of peaking, So, speaking of peaking, Justin, you
would consider then Undersid Stuard, you wasn't the biggest.

Speaker 6 (21:55):
I remember they used to describe you as like the
stream being man.

Speaker 7 (22:00):
What was you like?

Speaker 6 (22:00):
Five seven five eight.

Speaker 3 (22:03):
Shoes with shoes five eights?

Speaker 5 (22:05):
Man?

Speaker 7 (22:07):
Did you play?

Speaker 8 (22:07):
You played smooth, you played big and you always controlled
the game. And can you tell us a little bit
about being being that type of guard.

Speaker 5 (22:14):
In that era?

Speaker 3 (22:15):
Man? Okay?

Speaker 1 (22:17):
So yeah, in that era, you know, we always you know,
being honest, like if there's a lot of big guys
out there around.

Speaker 3 (22:25):
That time, you know what I mean. I grew up
watching guys like Kobe oh Ski, Mike Damon.

Speaker 1 (22:31):
Come on, these dudes like Kobe and all of six
six six seven nailed me sixty five. So it was like,
you know, I was like, I just knew I had
to grind. I was like, I knew I had to work.
I was like I was hoping, you know, you know,
just like everybody else. Man don't get this bro Sperts,
We see why I get this girl friend. It never
ever happened. So I just never looked at it as

(22:51):
me being like small. I just was like, you know what,
I'm gonna make you work, you know what I mean.
Like we, like I said, we grew up in the
city where we were just you know, we had to
be dog. You had to you know what I mean.
If not you, I mean, you just.

Speaker 3 (23:05):
Weren't gonna make it.

Speaker 1 (23:06):
So, you know, me being then undersized, God, it's always
been it always We used to be that stepulation, We're
gonna put it up and things like that. But I
learned how to play against bigger guys when we used
to go to the res, go to go up to
Hammon and play with Kobe and guys like that, you
know what I mean. Like I said, growing up, you know,
I'm gonna be honest with you. They were like, you know,
we social media and everything was like like that. You know,

(23:29):
we see things on TV but you know, growing up
learning from his dad, Coach Turner, it was like, man,
we get to see like this is what it's gonna take.

Speaker 7 (23:40):
They shout out to uncle, Uncle Carl. We know you
watch what's up?

Speaker 3 (23:47):
Yes, sir, that's my now all day here we already
so growing up.

Speaker 1 (23:51):
You know, guys like you know, my grandfather and the
people that were in the recks, they really did a
good job of, like you know, pushing us and trying
to get us, you know, not to be in the streets,
not to be in the party. Seeing guys like Kobe,
the older guys that we see how they work, you
know what I mean. We, like you said, we didn't
have trainers back then. Like you know, we'll we'll touch
on that about training, But we didn't have it like

(24:13):
that back then. But one thing we did we had
access to the RECs, you know what I mean. They
they were just let us go in free free back then.
Now you know, everything you gotta pay for. But me
as far as like about in my basketball career started
at a young age, I used to watch them guys,
and I always wanted to.

Speaker 3 (24:30):
Be a Titan, you know what I mean, I just
I ain't I didn't know. I was like, you know,
hopefully I'll put on that uniform.

Speaker 1 (24:37):
But once I got in there, man, you know, like
we said about people filtering out, I was like, man,
let me try to you know, get my grades right,
let me get on this, you know, get on this team.

Speaker 3 (24:47):
Let me work hard. So you know, that's all I did.
I just tried to beat the odds.

Speaker 7 (24:50):
Man, Like I tell my youngsters now, salute bro salut.

Speaker 5 (24:54):
Sure then, uh, they didn't help you, Jane that you
had a lot of examples, like even players you didn't
get to see play, but you may have heard about
like little Willie and then a lot of the small
guards that come from the city of Alexandria. Because it's
a bunch of them.

Speaker 4 (25:11):
You can you can close your eyes and throw a
rock and hit a tough, fast, quick athletic small guard
that's that's ready to go at anybody. So so did
that help you having those examples of like, hey, I
can do this too.

Speaker 5 (25:26):
For sure?

Speaker 1 (25:27):
Everybody I always heard about, man, I always heard about
will like always coming up and like we said, we
didn't have a footage like that back then. I wish
we did, you know, I wanna definitely study I forgot
some of the other smaller it is it Glenn Harris,
who's the other guy that they said it was? That
there was really short and TC a guard really, I

(25:50):
think he was like A played in Capital Class. I
kept hearing about him, you know, and I heard stories,
you know, when you come up in the city, you're like, man,
dang this dang. He played at TC too, He played
at TC. He was out of TC, like man. And
then like you said, back then, you know, public schools
was the public schools was what.

Speaker 3 (26:10):
It wasents we used to be the breaks of let's
be honest, yea.

Speaker 1 (26:14):
So now that's how that time's changed. But I definitely
heard the name uh and and and the little guards man.
Once I started to know, I was like, man, I
ain't growing, no, I ain't growing no more. So I'm like,
let me go ahead and start, you know, let me
try to get on. Let me let me see watch
some film, watch Tim Hardway, watch the small guards, try
to study them and see what they did and and

(26:36):
tried to do that. But man, my story at TC, man,
everything fell in place for me, you know what I mean.

Speaker 3 (26:43):
I worked hard. I worked hard, but things, you know,
worked itself out. And I end up, you know, thank
you God that I got in a situation where like
I got a chance to be the man that I
was like, what okay, let's go, you know what I mean.

Speaker 1 (26:54):
And I took advantage of that man. And you know
how it is in Alexander, like we said, it's so
many talented guys.

Speaker 3 (27:00):
So many, yeah, so many.

Speaker 1 (27:04):
So yeah, those some of the guys. And you seen
I mean you heard the stories. I know you probably
you know heard about Little Willie and the people like that.
I heard he's the myth, the myth.

Speaker 3 (27:15):
Yeah yeah, so yeah, that was awesome.

Speaker 5 (27:20):
So so tell us about your experience once you got
into TC and you was able to lay them up
and playing your very first varsity game. Describe that moment.

Speaker 1 (27:31):
Oh wow, okay, So you know nowadays, you know, most
of the most of the guys that you know, you
playing JYV at a certain you know, tenth grade, they're like,
oh man, you know what I mean.

Speaker 3 (27:41):
Back in the days, we had to wait our turn,
you know what I mean, we had to inch our
way up.

Speaker 1 (27:46):
So going into TC, I remember my freshman year, man,
I got the minihow and I was after you know,
how many help we all, you got hand and you
got everybody in the city.

Speaker 3 (27:55):
So when I got there, man, I was was kind
of unfocused.

Speaker 7 (27:58):
Man.

Speaker 1 (27:58):
So the first half, Coach Turner know he was a
freshman coach. He was like, I had to sit out
the first half of freshman year. I was like, oh
my gosh. But as soon as soon as I got eligible, man,
Coach Turner was like, let's go first there of practice.

Speaker 3 (28:12):
Man, we was in that thing. Kill it and he
put me. He threw me right in there.

Speaker 1 (28:17):
So I played freshman my you know that the second
half of the year. And then my tenth grade year,
it just something told me like, you know what, just
ease my way into you know what I mean, Just
you know, play JV and see how it goes, you
know what I mean, things like that. So I ended
up playing jay Z and I got jay V and VP.

(28:38):
So at the end of the year, it's you know,
it was like, you know, we move you up the
varsity and I was like, oh, man, okay, all right,
first game, man, I remember it was I was nervous, nervous.
I forgot who he played though, but I know, just
being able to move up the varsity and learn I
was like, man, that's what's up.

Speaker 3 (28:57):
And I was small, you know what I mean. I
was probably like one fifty so con wet. Uh So
I know, I got my first bucket and I was
so excited.

Speaker 1 (29:07):
Man. And then going into my I really had a breakout,
to be honest, I really had my breakout going.

Speaker 3 (29:13):
Into my junior year that summer.

Speaker 1 (29:17):
I really got confidence when I before I even played varsity,
like a real full season of varsity. That's suddenly you
know how Sleepy Thompson was like, that was my coming
out party.

Speaker 7 (29:28):
Man.

Speaker 3 (29:28):
I was like, I got it in.

Speaker 1 (29:30):
And then next thing, I know, my first letter I
ever got was from Howard. So me going into my
junior year, I'm like, oh, let's go.

Speaker 3 (29:37):
I'm ready. We about to were about to put in
this work. I made the All Star Team Allstar Game
that summer. Again, our team was deep.

Speaker 1 (29:44):
We had big Stefan Bicayle, We had Eric Schwartz, we
had you know, Dominique Dominique win Bush.

Speaker 3 (29:54):
We had all good big red We had one of
the biggest team.

Speaker 1 (29:58):
Going into my junior year U we had one of
the biggest teams in the area, which was crazy. We
had a six nine six eight six six six six
six five. You don't usually have that in public school, right,
Like we had that going into our junior year. But
that was you know, I was always what I did
want to play for Warden. Warden was the man then,
you know, watching damn Man and Mikey them, So I

(30:20):
was like, man, it's gonna be my turn. Warden retired
and Coach Palmer had to move up to the varsity coach.
That year, we were preseason number three in the area
and we ended up being eleven and eleven.

Speaker 9 (30:37):
Hey, hey, justin do you remember do you remember the
head coach at Howard University at the time when you
received your letter?

Speaker 7 (30:42):
Was it coach Malie?

Speaker 9 (30:44):
Was it coach mc mccles. Yeah, Yeah, that was coach.
That's one thing about shout out to coach. He go
get him from wherever. If you can bump you don't
care Paul size this d or whatever. Yeah, he gonna
he gonna find a way for you to help. You
know what I'm saying, his ball club man. He shout

(31:04):
out to coach and man, he's a he's a great man,
real good man.

Speaker 7 (31:10):
Yeah, And I I.

Speaker 1 (31:14):
Mean I totally appreciated that because that changed my whole
mindset just getting I'm like, what from Howard. I was like,
I didn't even play a whole varsity yet. It was
this summer league, and yeah, we built the Definitely we built.
We built a great relationship.

Speaker 7 (31:29):
That's what's up.

Speaker 1 (31:30):
They were recruiting me since, like I said, tenth grade
going into eleven all the way through my senior year,
so we'll get I'm definitely gonna.

Speaker 7 (31:36):
Get to that.

Speaker 3 (31:36):
So shout out to him, man. That was so he
gave me confidence.

Speaker 7 (31:40):
Man.

Speaker 1 (31:41):
And then like I said, we didn't have a good
junior year. We went eleven to eleven definitely was crazy.
And then going into my senior year was uh, Coach
Bryant changed.

Speaker 3 (31:52):
My my career.

Speaker 5 (31:55):
Coach Brian shout out.

Speaker 1 (31:57):
Yes, indeed, coach Dwayne Bryant, Man, we didn't know what
was going on. I remember that summer Big Stephan and
we had two two Nike All Americans on our squad
and they were like, man, we're gone, we leaving. I'm like, okay,
all right, you know, I'm like, okay, you guys are leaving, okay.
And I was kind of like, you know, all right,
I'm gonna.

Speaker 3 (32:17):
I'm gonna step it up.

Speaker 1 (32:18):
This is gonna this is gonna be something. Yeah, we
all gonna step it up. Me Tom all good, big love,
Big David Bridges. We all were like, you know, all right,
well we're going into that summer my senior year, like
my junior average like ten points. I started, Some came
off the bench, some and I you know, coach coaches,

(32:39):
you know, they were seniors there too, so he wanted
to play the scenes.

Speaker 7 (32:42):
He wanted them to go out.

Speaker 3 (32:43):
You know how it is again, you know at.

Speaker 1 (32:45):
TC and certain certain programs, you just gotta wait your
turn and you know, be ready. So going into my
senior year, Eric and Stephan they left, so I knew
and showed the shoulder of the scoring and everything was
I mean, a lot of it was gonna go to me.
So that summer man we just said, you know, once
we found out coach Broyan was coming in, we didn't
really know, you know, we didn't know anything about him really,

(33:08):
but we were like, all right, well, shoot, we won out,
We won our summer league, went into senior year.

Speaker 3 (33:12):
Coach Bryant got there. Man through that Georgetown defense. We
were small, but we were.

Speaker 1 (33:17):
We were pressing people all day and we were gone
we end up. We end up you know, that year
making it to the state quarterfinals.

Speaker 3 (33:24):
You know what I mean.

Speaker 1 (33:25):
We gave the way gateway the district te we won
the district title. We played against you know, Tyree Corn
and them man Westerll Thomas. Those were everybody's from Alexander
as well.

Speaker 3 (33:35):
So we had that.

Speaker 1 (33:36):
Rivalry with then Wes Protomac coach Wes Potomac back then
it's a big Wes Photomac and Hayfield man, it was yep,
so those were our big unrival.

Speaker 3 (33:46):
So we end up, you know, ended up having a
successful senior year man and.

Speaker 5 (33:51):
All glory.

Speaker 8 (33:53):
You guys had a pretty decent back Now, let me stop.
Y'all had a great back Was that talm with you?
Was it tll okay? Talk about that because you guys
were getting you guys were getting a lot of love
for your backcourt, that that tandem was getting a lot
of praise.

Speaker 5 (34:07):
Fact.

Speaker 6 (34:08):
Then, yes, I went to Potomac Hogschool, so you know
we had Yeah.

Speaker 3 (34:14):
So well listen, all right, let me get in that
recipe Toime craft Man. That was my guy.

Speaker 1 (34:22):
And the crazy part about it is we were both
the same height five eight and we didn't know, like, okay,
am I gonna start?

Speaker 3 (34:33):
Is he gonna start? Coach Bryant came and was like,
you know what, you can shoot it. Tom's gonna be
on the ball. I'm gonna put you off the ball
and let you do you. I was like, oh, let's
you know what I mean? Like, I was like, all right, cool.

Speaker 1 (34:50):
So me and Tom will always like we never had
a robbery against each other because we always respected each other.

Speaker 3 (34:58):
Tom was a dog.

Speaker 1 (35:00):
That dude will come on the court find whoever the
opposed point guard is.

Speaker 3 (35:06):
He already know, Uh, Kobe, little cousin Corn. They used
to go at it. And that was my dog too.

Speaker 7 (35:13):
You know.

Speaker 1 (35:14):
Everybody always used to pay me and Corn, that's my guy,
you know what I mean. We grew up in this
you know, Nanny j Lee and things like that, so
they always do it.

Speaker 3 (35:20):
But it was time and him going at it. We
were both undersized guards and all we did.

Speaker 1 (35:27):
He he Coach Bryant, like I said, he brung that
Georgetown defense and Georgetown offense, and you know he's a
former pro and everything you know in their history books
at Georgetown.

Speaker 3 (35:37):
So he just let us go.

Speaker 7 (35:38):
Man.

Speaker 3 (35:39):
We just pressed.

Speaker 1 (35:40):
We made, we made, we made that game hell for everybody,
Like we picked up full court the whole game, the
entire game. And you know, on that team, you know,
I was the leading scorer, but we had guys like
you know, Kevin Jared to come off the match, he
was in what yes, so he was a shooter. And

(36:00):
Tom just just Tom was just our leader. Man, Like
I'm you know, I land him scoring and things like that.
I knew when when the when the Tom came, I
was like, they're gonna get me the ball.

Speaker 7 (36:09):
So I know that.

Speaker 1 (36:10):
But that dude set the tone for everybody. Man, we
loved that dude. We want you want him somebody like
him on your team. So me and him, you know,
we always felt like we were underrated, you know, especially
in high school. You know, Wes Potomac had Korn Tyree
Hatefield had Cornell Felton, Steve Miles Man, Carlos Jones. The

(36:32):
district was crazy and every night you were gonna you're
gonna get a battle. We had like probably one of
the best districts in in Virginia at that time. The
Patriot District was the loyal So me and Tom knew
he was like, you know, we were.

Speaker 3 (36:48):
In eleven eleven. They didn't really know. They knew who
we were, but they didn't really pay attention to us.
So we're like, all right, we're gonna get out here
and we're gonna prove it to him.

Speaker 1 (36:54):
So we we Me and Tom we clicked. Man, he
knew where I was gonna be at. I knew he's
and push the tempo. When he went out the game,
I went to the point guard and Kevin Jerry came in,
so we had about five people. We had about five
people average in double figures that year. And Dominic Wimbush
came back from football, so he came in too. So
we just and we just was undersized and we just
were dogs.

Speaker 3 (37:15):
We just that's how we played. Man, Rest in Peace Time.

Speaker 6 (37:18):
Definitely watch too. Definitely, y'all have to give people fits.

Speaker 3 (37:23):
Man, Hey, I appreciate that.

Speaker 7 (37:26):
Man.

Speaker 1 (37:27):
You know, as you get older, you look back, you know,
like we said, we didn't have social media like that.
So when we ran through our regional I'll.

Speaker 3 (37:35):
Never forget the story when we ran through our regional run,
and I.

Speaker 1 (37:39):
Ain't gonna lie that that whole regional tournament, I didn't
score on the twenty except except for the the championship
game ran out of gas whatever whatever region. But when
when we were going through that, you know a couple
of people who have you know, tell me the story
back then. They was like, listen, man, we used to
see the numbers. Were like okay, and I got to

(38:02):
the game and I see this little dude on the court.
They didn't even you know, they couldn't.

Speaker 3 (38:06):
They didn't know. When you got there, you were like,
you gotta see him for yourself, And that was just
so funny.

Speaker 1 (38:11):
He was like, man, I go in there. I was like,
I'm thinking, I'm about to see the six three six
four guard.

Speaker 3 (38:16):
And he was like, I come up there and I
see this little dude just going I was like, yeah, man.
So it was just a funny story to hear that.

Speaker 1 (38:22):
Man.

Speaker 5 (38:23):
Yeah, And look, I knew y'all.

Speaker 4 (38:25):
I knew y'all was gonna have a great season once
coach Coach Brian was on board because he's a he's
a hell of a coach. I mean not not just
a coach for the team, but also individual development, like defensively, offensively,
he just man, he just got that minus touch. So
I don't know if you know, before coach Brian take

(38:47):
that job. He was in Dayton, out there with me
and I would play with him all to play one
on one and he'll he'll help me work on my
game individually. And he was coaching city title teams out
there in Dayton. So I saw how that team played.
They was going up and down, and they had some
dudes that that that was that could go, and he
let him go. He let people, you know, spread their wings.

(39:10):
So once once he told me he took the TC
job and was moving back to the DMV area, I
was like, man, they about to get it.

Speaker 3 (39:19):
In yep, yep, and that.

Speaker 1 (39:22):
Let me tell you, like we say this, Alexander, man,
we everywhere, Let's be we everywhere basketball. I gotta tell
my youngsters now, basketball is a big fraternity. Man, you
never know whos gonna run to. I know we skipping
a little bit. But when I went to Dayton, everybody
knew Kobe and they knew coach Bryant, so it was
just a small world.

Speaker 3 (39:41):
I was like, dang, I forgot you.

Speaker 1 (39:42):
Coach Bryan coached Dayton before he came to TC, and
he used to tell me stories and all the people
that lived in Dayton, they was like, yeah, we know Kobe.

Speaker 7 (39:49):
We know.

Speaker 1 (39:49):
Coach Bryan, I was like, man, this is crazy because
I moved out there doing my chase of my pro career.
So I lived out in Dayton for like I used
to call Kobe all time. I lived out there for
about eight months. Day But yeah, man, yeah wow. But
coach Bryant, man, yes, we we ended up losing. I

(40:12):
know you probably know we ended up that year just
summing up my high school career. We ended up losing
to Potomac at Potomac because we lost in the regional finals.
So we ended up going down to Garfield to playing
Potomac and we had them all game long, we were winning.
We missed about fifteen We missed about fifteen free throws

(40:33):
because we would have been we would have been up
a lot, but we missed so many THATGGO free throws.
And we got down to the end and lost to them,
probably about like two points. And we were up the
whole game and one of our guys, one of the
guys got the rebound Corey Crane or something. He stole
it from our boy was up one. He laid it
up and after that we lost. We did the same
thing to Kobe, I mean the same thing that Mikey
and Damon them did their senior year. They won the district,

(40:56):
beat Robinson, lost to Robinson in the regional championship. We
beat Western tom lost to Westlotomac in the regional championship.
They went to Potomac and played Potomac at Guardfield and lost.
We went to Potomac and went to guard for the loss.

Speaker 3 (41:08):
We did the exact same thing, but we had a game.
I don't think.

Speaker 1 (41:12):
I don't think Damon, I don't think they had it
on rolland Roberts was just dunking all over them.

Speaker 4 (41:17):
Remember, yeah yeah, yeah yeah, Potma was too big for him,
but a close game. They had an opportunity to pull
that game out. But the size the side was a
huge factor in that. In that match big Fish and
Brian Thoms wasn't playing. He was suspended or something like that.

Speaker 3 (41:36):
Yep, yep, yep.

Speaker 7 (41:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (41:38):
Roland was a little different back then.

Speaker 1 (41:40):
Brookie was a Wookie, was a freshman, was unreal as
a freshman.

Speaker 3 (41:46):
And then they had what they had that shooter to
Harris or something that Harris yeah was good. Come on, man,
come on crazy.

Speaker 8 (41:55):
What people don't what people don't realize about Mookie Rest
in peace for mook Man. Mook was with me as
a pressman. You know, mook uh moke h were not
not recipes. I'm sorry think about mother Man, but mo
Man Moot was also undersized.

Speaker 5 (42:11):
About, saying coach Man, I know, you know we're.

Speaker 8 (42:15):
Talking about my bad twisted on that. But yeah, I
just I just seen Mook the other day and I
just I went to mother Man. Mook was also an
undersized dude, man who who could boogey a little bit?
And uh, you know they had they had a great
team back there, Man, but like rolling was a difference
maker and that game was you guys missed a lot
of shots in that game and you guys, but it

(42:36):
was a fun game to watch for I was in
the building for that.

Speaker 1 (42:40):
No, I remember remember, Man, and like, like we said, Man,
basketball is a big fraternity, and you know those guys
are I'm still cool with the Sherman Rivers. Cliff Hawkins
was on that team, you know what I mean. Me
and Sherman Well always talk about that, man. And we
would have played against Ronald Curry and them if we

(43:00):
the won, but they ended up going in and blasting
Ronald Curry and they made it to state finals until
they met they met my future college teammate, Hey g W.

Speaker 3 (43:14):
Daniel. Nobody's beating them.

Speaker 7 (43:17):
Back then.

Speaker 6 (43:19):
That was that was great bump back then, man, it
was just fun watching.

Speaker 8 (43:21):
I used to come back and you know, except I
was I was in college when I would come back
and watch Potomac play ball because it was just a
lot of competition back then.

Speaker 6 (43:29):
A lot of ball players back then, man, a lot
of a lot of competition.

Speaker 8 (43:34):
Sure, yes, let's let's let's jump into your college stuff, man,
I talk about that and how you made the transition
from high school to college and how did you come
down to making your decision?

Speaker 1 (43:44):
All right, So Lett, that's that's good because I get
to I always get back and like say, what I'm
doing now.

Speaker 3 (43:51):
I talk to my kids about this. I always tell them,
get their grades right, get well, do what you were
supposed to do.

Speaker 7 (43:58):
You know.

Speaker 1 (43:58):
I really, like I said, I really didn't belie leave
that I was going to be in college playing until
coach Bryant got there, got to TC and then I
knew I was.

Speaker 3 (44:07):
Like done if I'd have had them one more year. So,
like I said, I was getting interest from Howard in
different places like that, and you know, to be real,
back then, we didn't know what Division two schools was.

Speaker 1 (44:18):
I know, Kobe, I know you probably didn't know one
Division two schools. You might have known about Virginia State
and all of them bodies, but I didn't know. I
was like, man, what like the cule? I was like,
I didn't know anything about you know, Division two schools then,
like you said, we were in the nineties. We didn't
have all the stuff that they have now access to.
So so what happened was I tell them to keep

(44:39):
their grades up. My grades weren't the greatest. They weren't bad,
but they weren't the greatest. So once I think figured out,
like I had heard from schools when Coach Bryant got there.
I had heard from schools like, you know, all the
local schools, Mason Hampton, Norfolk State, the small majors.

Speaker 3 (44:58):
Do you want Universsity New Orleans because Coach Brown was
from New Orleans, he had that plug.

Speaker 1 (45:03):
And then University of Detroit because Perry Watkins I think
he was from New Orleans too or something.

Speaker 3 (45:09):
They work that connection. We had Coach bryag connections.

Speaker 1 (45:12):
So once I figured it out, like man, I can't
play college ball, like he's like, man, dog listen.

Speaker 3 (45:18):
But then we figured out that the grades, you know,
my test scores, they wouldn't prop me. I was almost.

Speaker 1 (45:25):
Detroit was gonna be the move. I was gonna go
there and learn from Rashad Phillips. You know, of course
I will be back up because I do everything, So
that was gonna be the move. But you know, at
the last minute, they wouldn't pull the plug on propping me.
So coach Coach Brown was like, man, we're gonna go
to Juco route and I'm like, you know, he's like
a father.

Speaker 7 (45:45):
Figure to me. I ain't.

Speaker 1 (45:46):
You know, He's been at every level. He's playing at
Georgetown's played in the NBA, so you know, when it
came to college, you know, that wasn't really huge in
my family. So I was like, man, I just want
to go somewhere where you know I can. You better
get a chance, you know what I mean.

Speaker 3 (46:01):
I want to play D one.

Speaker 1 (46:02):
I ain't think about D two or nothing. I heard
about sat which is how that comes comes about. I
heard about Saint and he was like, yeah, you can
come down there at Division two Cuba, and I was like,
you know, at the moment, I was like, my goal
was Division one, you know what I mean? I was like,
I know, I've been mid major whatever. I knew what
my capability was. So I ended up taking some visit

(46:23):
to some juco's. I was like, coach, what about prep?
You know I wanted to go prep school to He's like, nah,
I don't think prep would be good for you. And
again I'm like, well, I believe in my trust him.
I think he knows what's what's best. So I ended
up taking a visit to once I figured out was Juco,
you know what I mean? And coach coach mclee at

(46:46):
just to say that, and Howard that year after my
senior year, he was at my games and stuff like that.
When coach Thompson came to the games, he got fired,
so that that that Leeway was like, well, he's you
know what I mean.

Speaker 3 (47:02):
So I ended up taking a visit to this Juco.

Speaker 1 (47:05):
Of course, I went back and went to Montgomery check
that out, and it was like I was like, nah,
I wasn't going there.

Speaker 3 (47:10):
That's where time ended up going. And I took a
visit to Nuosho County in Kansas, and that was my
first time ever flying. I didn't fly playing. So I
went to Newosho County and it was.

Speaker 7 (47:26):
It was.

Speaker 3 (47:28):
Eye open the experience. It was cornfields nothing, but I
went flew into Kansas City and it was done with
cornfields and things like that. I was like, what in
the world. But the hoops was amazing. The hoops was amazing.

Speaker 1 (47:39):
They had at least they had at least five people
in Division one and on my trip, it was a
great experience.

Speaker 3 (47:49):
But I just us being from where we are from,
it just was a culture shock. I just couldn't do it.

Speaker 9 (47:56):
Like you know, I was like it was.

Speaker 3 (47:57):
Cornfields that their club up.

Speaker 1 (48:00):
They went to this like little I don't know, little
little little cafe, men's men's club whatever, and they ain't.

Speaker 3 (48:08):
Really had club stuff like that. So I was like
shell shock.

Speaker 7 (48:10):
I was like what.

Speaker 1 (48:12):
But the hoops, like I said, they had a kid.
They had a guy going side who signed with Pittsburgh.
It's called Newosha County, then Pittsburgh, Jacksonville, Wichita State before
which sar State blew up.

Speaker 3 (48:25):
Jacksonville will starts say pitt and a few other D
one schools. And I was like, man, and they was
letting me go.

Speaker 1 (48:31):
They were like, shoot the ball. We shoot threes, that's
what we do. We pushed the ball. Hoo's wise that
out of beant perfect. But I was like I don't know, man,
So you know, I talked to coach there the next week.
The follow I had got a call when Coach Mint
was like, man, Santacento, Texas looking at you tonight.

Speaker 3 (48:51):
I was like, San Jack Santa Cento. I ain't really
know too much about it then, like I said, But
then everybody around the hoop circle was like, man, San
Jack is legend legendary.

Speaker 1 (49:01):
I was like really, so I kept, you know, and
then they ended up recruiting Carlos Jones, who was my
childhood guy over at Hayfield.

Speaker 3 (49:09):
And I was like, oh, shoot, this this might be something.

Speaker 1 (49:12):
I'm looking at the little VHS tapes and they was
like Steve Francis was there.

Speaker 7 (49:16):
I was like what.

Speaker 1 (49:17):
And then you know, I was like, okay, let me see.
And I was like they were like, it's right outside Houston.
I was like, oh, Houston, Texas.

Speaker 7 (49:25):
All right.

Speaker 1 (49:26):
I was like all right, So we took our visit, man,
and it was it was amazing. We ended up working
out at Rice University. I remember that when me and
call Ups went on our visit together. We we ended
up working out there. We saw the campus, we saw
the city of Houston. We went to a playoff game. Man,
the coach is so connected in Texas. We ended up

(49:46):
going to the Houston Rockets Utah Jazz game when Charles
Barkley and Piping them were there.

Speaker 3 (49:52):
So we had we did he gave us. Actually we
had a hotel right there in downtown Houston, and me
and Los were sold.

Speaker 1 (49:58):
Like when we were there, we were so real, right, yeah,
we're gonna sign this paperwork, you know what I mean.
We were coming there and I'll tell these kids. Now,
you guys know Kobe, you guys know me being from Alexander,
you know everybody you know.

Speaker 3 (50:11):
I was the man on my team and things like that.

Speaker 1 (50:14):
Man, when we got the Juco it was eye opening
your kids, I'm telling you man, Man, they could go.

Speaker 3 (50:22):
We had people from everywhere, man, like New Orleans.

Speaker 1 (50:26):
We had a lot of people in Louisiana, Texas, Florida.
And then we had three d m V guys before
DMV guys and that's when we started. It was myself
Colas Jones. It was a kid from Spinger named will Smith.
And we had a kid from Montgomery County. My name,

(50:46):
my man, Chris Rome, Chris Rowland.

Speaker 3 (50:49):
So we all were there. We had had some DMV
connections as some New Orleans guys.

Speaker 1 (50:53):
I got there, man, and they they were they were
going at me right away, right away, right away.

Speaker 3 (51:00):
It's like I said it was. It was just guard
from New Orleans named David Williams. Man, we were going
at it. We were going at it.

Speaker 1 (51:08):
And then that's when you know, again, we didn't have
what we have today. So when we see these guys,
you know, you might go on aid term things like that,
but it still wasn't the same. When we see these
guys like man, that that's when I knew there's hoopers
all over this country, hoopers all over.

Speaker 7 (51:25):
You.

Speaker 1 (51:26):
You you gotta you gotta put into work or you're
gonna get chewed up. You guys, know you guys athletes,
you know when you when when you go somewhere, man,
you gotta you gotta be ready, man, and they'll break you.
That's why some people don't make it four years in college.
You know, one of my guys from DC, he.

Speaker 3 (51:42):
Was there, that's my guy too. He just couldn't handle it.
He was like, man, I gotta go. So he goes.

Speaker 1 (51:48):
This is all it is. I tell my kids, many
the kids I work with, I'm like, listen, man, somebody's
gonna take your spot. You gotta you gotta work on
your game always. I remember he left and I'm like, oh, shoot,
the point guard spot might be mine. Next thing I know,
we're in the doing room.

Speaker 3 (52:03):
This guy comes in. He wheels in his bag. Yeah,
from New York City. I'm like, like, they're not playing.
They like right away.

Speaker 1 (52:15):
And that whole year, man was the best comp I've
ever played against. I ended up coming off the bench
from Yeah Lows, the guy from New York ended up starting.

Speaker 7 (52:24):
He was the man. You know.

Speaker 1 (52:25):
I had my moments when I when I contributed, you know,
and like I said, man, it was opening sand Jack.
The whole started five, win D one. From there, I
stayed one year. I ended up going transferring to Saint
Augustine's and.

Speaker 5 (52:41):
Rob you know what that dope.

Speaker 3 (52:44):
Yeah, I ended up in the whole starting five with
D one.

Speaker 1 (52:46):
Everybody on our roster, you know, we had people that
end up being inn ai, all Americans.

Speaker 3 (52:52):
Some of them went D two. Someone with everybody off
the bench but everybody went to school pretty much.

Speaker 4 (52:56):
Everybody, so right, but it was oh talking about it
a lot on this show, and as well as I
did because we both went to prep school. But uh,
just the experience you get from going to a juco
or the prep school and the competition that that you
trying to see and give you a benchmark to take

(53:18):
you from where you you know, where you were currently at,
to take you to another level, because you're right, once
you get to those places, whether it's a juico or
prep school, you know, sometimes it's an eye opening experience
because you you coming into the school thinking you the
best thing since slice bread. Ain't nobody even close, and

(53:38):
then you see this dude from the West Coast, this
dude from down South, this dude from the East Coast,
whatever the case may be. You know, I had teammates
six' one glide in front of the free throw. LINE i, said,
man what the hell is?

Speaker 7 (53:50):
This you know WHAT i?

Speaker 4 (53:51):
Mean so that that turned my focus to you know
What i'm, saying making myself more, athletic getting in the
weight room for the first, time trying to get fast
and trying to get, stronger trying to get quicker Because
that's WHAT i needed to work on the.

Speaker 5 (54:03):
MOST i already had.

Speaker 4 (54:04):
The game and the skills and the, size but seeing
those athletic dudes gave me a. VISION i was, Like,

Speaker 3 (54:52):

SOMEWHERE i don't even care if it's making. Here at
least get that experience to go over To europe and
things like. That BECAUSE i used to reach out To.

Speaker 3 (01:05:19):
KOBE i was, like, Man, cob you got it was
tough back. Then you had to you had. To you
really had to be that dude and go to a small.
School it was kind of. Tough like we, said film
and things like that wasn't.

Speaker 1 (01:05:30):
There so AGAIN i ended up making some. CONNECTIONS i
ended up going to a few pro. COMBINES i went
to one In Ohio State. UNIVERSITY i met some people
there and this was two thousand and, five and one
of my guys that was on my team. There we're boys,
now LIKE i, mean we still. Boys we only met one,

(01:05:50):
day played that whole day. Together he was about six or.
Nine his name Is Delano. Thomas he's now assistant coach
at at at Hot. Point he's been. Coaching he played
overseas for about ten. Years we reconnected because of social,
media and that's. ME i should probably talked to him
a couple of weeks. Ago i'm trying to get kids
down the high.

Speaker 3 (01:06:09):
Point so that's what it.

Speaker 7 (01:06:10):
Is.

Speaker 3 (01:06:11):
Like we, said a basketball is big frat and you
don't want to burn.

Speaker 1 (01:06:13):
Bridges SO i chased the progrim went to a few,
camps met an agent down In. Dayton that's WHY i
ended up at. Dating that's what me And kobe talking.
About my agent ended up being In, Xenia. Ohio SO
i ended up going back and Forth ohio a, lot
going to pro combines here. There Sometimes i'll be the
best player. There but again because of film and not

(01:06:34):
the media like we, did people didn't really, know you
know WHAT i, Mean they're, like, okay word of mouth
going to camps.

Speaker 3 (01:06:40):
Here SO i chased the grind for a few.

Speaker 1 (01:06:42):
YEARS i ended up going down To mexico playing a little,
bit and THEN i came. Back you, KNOW i had
a stint In, mexico learnt a, lot you, know had
A i had A i don't know what kind of
plugs he used to be.

Speaker 3 (01:06:56):
With The San Antonio spurs back in the.

Speaker 7 (01:06:58):
Days my.

Speaker 3 (01:07:01):
Coach, chavez and we end up going down.

Speaker 1 (01:07:04):
There played it played down there for ABOUT i would
say a solid. Month we're out there just, grinding playing against,
teams trying to get, on you, know how to be
AND i had some big, games but things just just
just didn't work out back, then you know WHAT i.
Mean SO i ended up playing in some minor coming,
back going back To. Ohio my agent was out. THERE

(01:07:26):
i ended up playing in some minor leagues like the
THE A, B, A, n P, B, L E B
a different minor leagues like, that and my last my
last break WAS i went to A pbl camp out
In maryland And george Sum prepp and you know who
happened to be a coach at DOING Sath prep at

(01:07:48):
that time was Coach Dwayne, bryant so he was At
it was a peep it was called The Premier Basketball.
League it was a new league paying. GOOD i ended
up going to a camp just don't want to. See
this is gonna be maybe my last. Rock AND i was,
like you, know let me. SEE i was probably around
like twenty six ish twenty, seven AND i was, like
let me give it a go ano another.

Speaker 3 (01:08:10):
Chance SO i ended UP i balled out against a
lot of names in this. AREA i was. COOKING i
ended up being in the draft and my agent called.
Me he was, like, hey, man what you doing down.

Speaker 1 (01:08:20):
THERE i was, like they said they.

Speaker 3 (01:08:21):
Put you in the. Draft he was. KILLING i was, like,
okay let's. Go and it was only two. ROUNDS i
ended up not getting drafted.

Speaker 1 (01:08:27):
So THEN i was, like you know, WHAT i GOTTA
i gotta move on a little. Bit i'm still gonna,
hoop BUT i was, LIKE i gotta move on a little.
Bit so the last, straw the absolute last, straw was you,
know LIKE i, SAID i played in THE eba and
THE aba and all that stuff like.

Speaker 3 (01:08:42):
That my agent called.

Speaker 1 (01:08:43):
Me he was, like, Man i'm about to start. This
i'm about to start. This H i'm about to put
this team in this new league that's coming, out and
this is how much they paying.

Speaker 3 (01:08:52):
This that and the.

Speaker 1 (01:08:53):
Third AND i was, like oh.

Speaker 3 (01:08:54):
Okay he was, LIKE i got your three bedroom. HOUSE
i want you to.

Speaker 1 (01:08:58):
Move i'm like What he's, LIKE i want you to
with out. Here if y'all gonna be serious about, it
THEN i go out there full. CIRCLE i ended up
being roommates With Damon flint From, cincinnati so of course
he Knew, mike AND i THINK i know he know you.

Speaker 3 (01:09:14):
Cooked so we end up.

Speaker 1 (01:09:16):
Talking i'm, like, Man i'm gonna be on the team
And i'm learning from this dude who played with The
New York.

Speaker 3 (01:09:20):
Knicks i'm, like what the?

Speaker 1 (01:09:21):
Heck he was, older but he could. Play so long story,
short the league ended up. DISBANDING i mean it was
gonna be great. Too we had practice and. Everything we
had a, squad we had a mob when my college
Teammate Damon, flint we had a bunch Of we had.

Speaker 3 (01:09:36):
A couple of six eight six. Five we were ready
to rock and. Roll the holeague.

Speaker 1 (01:09:40):
FOLDED i ended up staying out there BECAUSE i was, like,
MAN i want to be a. Man i'm gonna, learn
you know WHAT i, Mean i'm gonna get on my.
Grind i'm over there living on the west west end
of The west side Of. DAYTON i ain't know at
the time how dangerous it. Was SO i was living
In dayton AND i ended.

Speaker 3 (01:09:57):
UP i ended up staying out there for eight months
trying to.

Speaker 1 (01:10:02):
Grind this is WHEN i started. This when the training process,
STARTED i started working out. MYSELF i was, learning fall
in love with training and things like. THAT i was
starting to, learn BUT i really wasn't all. In SO
i came back, home played for The Alexander avengers in
THE eba AND, pbl and THEN i called it a.
RAP i was, like my met my, wife now you,

(01:10:22):
know AND i was, like gotta slow.

Speaker 3 (01:10:25):
Down and THEN i started my Next, yeah.

Speaker 5 (01:10:31):
So, so, yeah talk to us about. That so you
so you had a hell of a basketball. CAREER i mean.
THAT i mean just listening to the stories you was telling,
us you, know And i've known you most of your,
life and some of the stuff you, KNOW i probably
forgot about or didn't. Know SO i, mean that's that's.

Speaker 4 (01:10:50):
Awesome so you you make it through, that that great basketball,
career and you're, Thinking, okay, now what what CAN i do?

Speaker 5 (01:10:58):
Now you know WHAT i, mean what CAN i do
for the next? Chapter so how did, you for man
esa come into? Fruition all?

Speaker 1 (01:11:07):
Right?

Speaker 3 (01:11:08):
Man you, Know i'm gonna keep it totally real.

Speaker 1 (01:11:11):
Always there's no cap like we. Say you, know AND
i know former athletes and this is a serious thing they.
Have we have hard a hard time transitioning into regular.
Life let's be, honest like getting into our professional. Career
IF i would have tooken it seriously more serious in,
COLLEGE i would have done something that was, Like, okay
soon AS i get out of, college MAYBE i can start.

Speaker 3 (01:11:32):
Going right to that.

Speaker 1 (01:11:33):
Field but, again we take our, losses we, learn and
we pass to the next, generation you know WHAT i.

Speaker 3 (01:11:38):
Mean so what happened WAS i ended up coming.

Speaker 1 (01:11:41):
BACK i was always working with the recreation Department Alexander
rex SINCE i was, little so, FIFTEEN.

Speaker 3 (01:11:46):
I always had to have a. Job it's LIKE i
always had to give our own. Money SO i was
doing that, throughout you.

Speaker 1 (01:11:54):
Know chasing the basketball thing, too AND i ended up
working in the school, system work with kids with.

Speaker 3 (01:11:59):
Autism what happened, was you, KNOW.

Speaker 1 (01:12:03):
I met my current wife now and when she got you,
KNOW i always liked watching THE nba draft pre draft,
WORKOUTS i always, did AND i started to.

Speaker 3 (01:12:13):
STUDY i was, like, man THIS i. LOOK i was, like,
MAN i love watching.

Speaker 1 (01:12:16):
WORKOUTS i was just watching them AND i was, like you,
KNOW i trained myself AND i wasn't even thinking about,
it like WHEN i was In. OHIO i might have
started In. OHIO i was, LIKE i find have.

Speaker 3 (01:12:25):
KNOWN i was started training way back then In ohio
as at younger. Age BUT i was trying to get.

Speaker 7 (01:12:30):
It so when my.

Speaker 1 (01:12:31):
Wife got pregnant at the, TIME i was, like you,
KNOW i was working with the recoration, part working with
the school, system AND.

Speaker 3 (01:12:39):
I was, like, MAN i got. IT i got to
step it. UP i was, like this is gonna be.

Speaker 1 (01:12:43):
AND i was LIKE i went.

Speaker 3 (01:12:44):
DOWN i started.

Speaker 1 (01:12:46):
THINKING i was, LIKE i love basketball. TRAINING i was,
like let me see WHAT i can do with this
BECAUSE i used to. Play and she's, like you doing
all this, basketball but you ain't getting paid for. IT
i was, like.

Speaker 3 (01:12:57):
You, know they don't. Understand i'm like other. GAME i
still love. It AND i was, like all, Right i'm
gonna take that.

Speaker 1 (01:13:03):
Challenge SO i, thought AND i was, like, man let
me go down the city, hall get my business license
and just, start you, know get it out the mud
to see what.

Speaker 3 (01:13:12):
Happened SO i came up with the name E Leie Shooters.
ATHLETICS i don't know how they. CAME i don't even
have to be.

Speaker 1 (01:13:19):
HONEST i think you know WHAT i had guys like,
You Steve, MILES a bunch of people that can.

Speaker 3 (01:13:28):
SHOOT i KNEW i could shoot back in the.

Speaker 7 (01:13:29):
DAYS i wasn't.

Speaker 3 (01:13:30):
PURE i could heat. Up BUT i was, like, HMM
i was like Shooters Elite Shooters. ATHLETICS i was, like
so that. WAY i was, like IF i do, SOMETHING
i got these shooters THAT i can bring. In and
that's WHAT i was.

Speaker 1 (01:13:41):
Thinking AND i was, like, Okay Lead Shooters athletics went
down there and got the name and things like. THAT
i started training. Outside, man you, know a lot of
people see my journey BECAUSE i PUT i put everything in.
There and this was thirteen years. AGO i started training outside.
Again we get back to not burning. BRIDGES i always
wanted to dose him in the city At. Alexandria we

(01:14:02):
always wanted to do something in the city Of. Alexander
things just didn't work out at that. Time it was
tough to get you, know to you, know and as
far as like business, WISE i really didn't know like
the ins and out And i'm still. Learning i'm still learning,
now learning about how the business. IS i never burnt,
bridges but the ain't nobody gonna hand you. NOTHING i was,

(01:14:22):
like let me get it out to MyD i started
training outside and THEN i always, have you, know again
being WHO i, was not being an a hole and you,
know burning. BRIDGES i had people helped me out around
along the. Way they were, like, HEY i Got Jim face,
HERE i Got Jim face. Dead AND i slowly started to.
GROW i was In alexandra doing my, thing you, know

(01:14:44):
teaching kids and. LEARNING i was, like, man this is
what you. KNOW i THINK i could do something with.
IT i ended up my Boy Jamal.

Speaker 3 (01:14:53):
Yusuf he's that's my. Partner he had reached out.

Speaker 1 (01:14:59):
To me WHEN i was on my ground WHEN i,
started you, KNOW i was ABOUT i, SAY i was
about like six six years in and he came to see.

Speaker 3 (01:15:06):
Me he was, like, MAN i you, Know I'm we've been,
boys you.

Speaker 1 (01:15:10):
KNOW i mean we played together in like some men's
league and those, league and he loves hoop and we
just stayed in.

Speaker 3 (01:15:17):
Contact with just stayed in contact with each. Other he
got into coaching and then he had told me hit.

Speaker 6 (01:15:22):
Me up one.

Speaker 3 (01:15:22):
Time he was, like, man, LISTEN i got. This you,
Know i'm about, to you, know open up a. Gym
and he's, like, man want you, come you, know see what's.

Speaker 7 (01:15:30):
Uthing and work with.

Speaker 1 (01:15:31):
Me and you, KNOW i built my.

Speaker 3 (01:15:32):
PROGRAM i built THE.

Speaker 1 (01:15:33):
Usa he was just starting AND i was, like you,
know we were, cool AND i was, like all, right
let's let's let's see what we can.

Speaker 3 (01:15:40):
Do he came to watch me. Train that's my, brother
you know WHAT i. Mean he came to watch me.
Training he was, like you, know let's see what we can.
Do so we started running camps down In lord in
the first the.

Speaker 1 (01:15:52):
Gym you, KNOW i kind of migrated out Of alexandria
because it, was you, know kind of tough to really
do WHAT i wanted to do In, alexandria you know
WHAT i. Mean that's our, city you know WHAT i.
Mean but we, know, HOPEFULLY i think it's starting to
open up. Now but hopefully we can do some things
in the. FUTURE covid we will talk about that as.
Well But i'm just, hoping like you, know our, city,
man we got guys who made It division, One division,
Two division.

Speaker 3 (01:16:13):
Three, kid it's a lot of, us.

Speaker 1 (01:16:15):
Man we can't even name, everybody but it's a lot
of people in the city who want to get, back
you know WHAT i. Mean but we just need to,
work you, know work more together to do. That so
we ended UP i ended up down there lord and
training with with my God jamal used to Elevate. Jim
we had a small little half, court you. Know AND

(01:16:36):
i ended up moving out closer to redistrict, too so
it's kind of, close you know WHAT i. Mean AND
i was, like all, right, well let's do, something, Man
let's keep out everybody know we, Are let's keep our
name this grind.

Speaker 3 (01:16:47):
Together and then we did that for a few, years
and you, know we. WE i wasn't a part of the.

Speaker 1 (01:16:54):
Process of finding the spot, then but the second one
that when we're at, NOW i, MEAN i THINK i
Thank god for him because he was, like, man let's,
go let's learn go with. Us we went and scouted
out places where we're gonna do this at and things like. That,
man and HE i learned a lot business wise of
WHAT i need to do is finding spots and locations

(01:17:14):
and things like. That and this was about what we
like four or five years. In so we finally we
found a spot AND i was, like and we found a,
spot and we just grinded from. There he was, like,
man you can put your grandfather's name on the.

Speaker 7 (01:17:28):
Court.

Speaker 1 (01:17:28):
Man my grandfather was very big inspiration to. Me SO
i was, Like, man are you seriously like we're gonna
do this right? Now, like, yeah, man let's do. It,
so you, know it's a lot of people in our
city that you know THAT i would have loved to
do some things.

Speaker 7 (01:17:41):
With but.

Speaker 3 (01:17:44):
You, know you just gotta find somebody that you know
that that really, has you, know the same goals as you,
do you.

Speaker 1 (01:17:52):
Know so we ended up we ended up linking And
i've been trying to do things, like you, KNOW i
did a camp with Mar.

Speaker 3 (01:18:01):
Smith of course my goat.

Speaker 5 (01:18:03):
My, corse not out of, Mind, mar that's my.

Speaker 3 (01:18:05):
Guy and then in quarternat SO i was, like, man
let's do this point guard. Camp we did that last
year and we had a good you, know we had
a good.

Speaker 1 (01:18:13):
Turnout And i'm always trying to give back to my you,
know put My alexander guys in as much AS i, can.

Speaker 3 (01:18:20):
Man because you, know you can't do anything.

Speaker 4 (01:18:22):
Byself so, YEAH i will, say, man y'all have a
y'all have an awesome. Facility i've you, know only seen it.
ONLINE i need to get by. There, yes my father
said he went through there recently to check you, out
and he, said this is definitely a great, facility, Man
so salute to you for.

Speaker 3 (01:18:41):
That, NO i appreciate, that.

Speaker 1 (01:18:43):
Man and you, know the D v, area, man we got.

Speaker 3 (01:18:45):
The best players in the, country you.

Speaker 5 (01:18:48):
Know, so So, jay let me let me ask you this.
Question we got we got a view Of Lee bacon. Whatever.
Lee he asked. It did you get your degree if.

Speaker 7 (01:18:58):
So and what?

Speaker 3 (01:19:00):
SO i did give my degree in graphic. Design art
was ALWAYS i always had art as people some people
most people KNOW i could draw back then and all the.
Things so art was kind of like WHAT i fell back.

Speaker 1 (01:19:13):
Into but WHEN i WHEN i got out of, school
it was, LIKE i was it JUST i guess it
was kind of like it was like, dated dated, knowledge
you know WHAT i.

Speaker 3 (01:19:23):
Mean WHEN i got, OUT i was, like what AM
i really gonna do with? Graphics?

Speaker 1 (01:19:26):
Guy you, KNOW i had some, ideas but like we,
said the transition from being an athlete to get into
the real world you gotta you, know you gotta find a.
NICHE i just ended up being blessed THAT I i've
been to people's person SO i ended up being able to.

Speaker 3 (01:19:44):
Start my basketball, training you.

Speaker 1 (01:19:45):
Know AND i used, that you, know my knowledge of you,
know knowing a lot of people and and just knowing
WHAT i was good. At and that's how we, uh
that's HOW i. FOLDED i end up doing it that.
Way and you, KNOW i love working with kids currently
trying to do some things in that field as. Well

(01:20:06):
But i'm just gonna try to keep keep this run.
GOING i love. IT i know it's a lot of basketball,
trainings a lot of facilities out there, now and it's
it's like. Hotcakes so you, know they gotta they gotta
decide if they you, know people are in it just
for the money or they in it because they love.
It so IT'S i, mean it's facilities popping up everywhere
in THE dv you, know.

Speaker 8 (01:20:25):
So to speaking to speaking of your, transition what was
the hardest transition getting from playing to?

Speaker 6 (01:20:34):
Training like what what was the hardest part about the transition?

Speaker 1 (01:20:37):
Piece, SO i, mean you gotta you, gotta you got
you definitely gotta love of. Game LIKE i, SAID I
i put a plan into. IT i started studying and
watching workouts and things like. That And i've always been
creative as a basketball. Player that was just WHAT i,
did WHAT i was able to do me being small
and things like.

Speaker 7 (01:20:57):
That SO i.

Speaker 1 (01:21:01):
The transition was, learning like first, one where you're gonna
do this? Set like who's gonna work? With like you
gotta where are you gonna do this?

Speaker 3 (01:21:11):
Set what? Location you?

Speaker 1 (01:21:13):
Know and like we, said now that everything's popping, up
everybody seeing that you, know social, Media instagram and things like.
THAT i use you, know we all use this platform
now to to grow you, know, podcasts getting paid for
podcasts and and things like. That SO i USED i,
started you, know Once, INSTAGRAM i started Using instagram and

(01:21:34):
meeting people and people you, know contact me about about.
Training they see What i'm. Doing so the transition, was
LIKE i, said it was just finding the, location see
seeing who you can, trust and just learning that you,
know you, know the the daily routine and monthly routine.

Speaker 3 (01:21:53):
And like paying.

Speaker 1 (01:21:54):
Rent who needs to pay? Here LIKE i, Said i'm
still learning. That i'm still learning.

Speaker 4 (01:21:59):
That so so jam may ask you, this what's been
your most difficult or challenge your, moment whether it's from
your your playing days or business, wise what's been the
most challenging moment for?

Speaker 1 (01:22:14):
You, well, now LIKE i, said it's a lot of
competition now or training things like. That so it's like
what the big Thing i've faced is, like you gotta
come up with sometimes you gotta come up with some
new things and new, ideas and you gotta know that.

Speaker 3 (01:22:30):
You, know we're coming to social media now that people are.

Speaker 1 (01:22:34):
Gonna some people are gonna use some of the ideas
that you come up, With so you gotta you gotta
put yourself out there and be, like you know, what
why do you stand? Out it just so happens that you,
know my my, resume you, KNOW i have a nice
little resume in. Basketball you, know that really definitely helps
that they know that you've done. It and again when

(01:22:56):
people know your character and they know just like, yours
your boss and son comes to me, now you. Know
and that's all because word of. Mouth you wouldn't have
done that if it was you, know somebody that you didn't.
Trust so that's been, challenging, man just coming up, with you,
know different concepts and things like, that.

Speaker 3 (01:23:17):
And and and getting the word out.

Speaker 7 (01:23:20):
There.

Speaker 3 (01:23:20):
Man you gotta like social media is is really.

Speaker 1 (01:23:24):
Huge you, know and these kids and these young, kids
it's just Sometimes i'm having trouble like reaching reaching out to.
THEM i just want, to you, know it's a lot
of kids In alexandra THAT i.

Speaker 3 (01:23:33):
Would Love Alexander.

Speaker 1 (01:23:35):
ULTNARIO i would love, to you, know get them down
to the.

Speaker 3 (01:23:38):
Facility you, know it's not, far you. Know so that's
a big thing right.

Speaker 7 (01:23:41):
Now just what what what do you?

Speaker 1 (01:23:45):
Do what makes them want to come back and what
makes them want to work with? You but once they get, THERE,
i LIKE i, Said i've got clients That i've had
since they were like nine years, old you know WHAT i,
mean they still work with.

Speaker 3 (01:23:56):
Me so you just gotta love it.

Speaker 7 (01:23:59):
And you got just you, know m, hm.

Speaker 6 (01:24:05):
How is it working with? Parents what's the what's the
biggest challenge working with?

Speaker 7 (01:24:09):
Parents?

Speaker 3 (01:24:11):
Workers like we we know we went through the. Grinding
we Can't we work to make the kids, better but
it's no guarantees in this game.

Speaker 9 (01:24:20):
Basketball, hey, hey, Hey, JUSTIN i ain't mean to interrupt. You, hey,
coach stop asking him some questions you already know the
damn answer.

Speaker 8 (01:24:28):
To but, well, well the Reason i'm trying, To i'm
trying To i'm trying to link because we asked these
questions a. LOT i know the answer to, it but
you got you got a lot of people on here
that's asking questions or listening to about how to get,
started you, know me and me and your experience about
working with parents can be completely different with you, know,
YEAH i know the, answer BUT i Want i'm trying

(01:24:50):
to open it up so people understand when you get
in this, business it's more.

Speaker 6 (01:24:53):
Than just, basketball.

Speaker 8 (01:24:56):
More than, basketball and a lot of times you got
guys that ain't never done.

Speaker 6 (01:25:01):
It that's being successful and why is?

Speaker 7 (01:25:02):

they need to work. On LIKE i, said we came
up in an era where basketball we loved. It so
if you love, it you're gonna put in that extra.
