The Odysseys of Alaythia
What Shines with the Dawn is the first book of The Odysseys of Alaythia series. Book One follows the epic adventure of Virginia Singerman. After the murder of her parents, Virginia moves to East Tennessee to live under the custody of her distant uncle in his palatial estate. One day, while exploring her new quarters, she finds a diary in an old room that had been locked off for over 100 years. Ignoring the warning that came with the book, she flips through its pages, reading about a teenage girl from the 1800’s named Rose Cohen, who lived in the same mansion before her. Virginia’s attention is gripped as Rose describes of a place nearby called Alaythia, where men can turn into beasts, warriors can sprout wings from their backs and channel fire through their very being, and her story of how she was kidnaped and rescued by these same individuals. It is not long after that the very things Virginia read about begin to manifest and hunt her down. Through the brave skills and crafts of Charles, her high school crush and one who knows more about what’s happening than he originally led her to believe, Virginia is protected and taken into another world: a world waiting for her, a world where she learns the truth about herself, a world that tells prophesies of her unlocking an ancient weapon that the dark ones fear, that is, if she she can be safeguarded long enough for it to come to pass. With her final hours in America reaching their end, she still debates if what she is doing is the right choice. It's not until she finds a letter from an old, historical friend that shows her the truth and provokes her to rethink her course of action.
The next morning, Andrew finds his sister Elizabeth knocking on his front door, saying she is there to pick up Virginia and take her away. With grief flooding his emotions, Andrew says goodbye to Virginia, but Charles tries one more time to convince her to stay and fulfill her destiny, while finally sharing how he truly feels about her, and if the consequences demanded it, he would lay down his own life to protect her if she chose ...
Ashamed and fearful, Virginia meets Andrew, Daniel, and Charles on the seashore where Narumel’s servant reads allowed the parchment that she signed. With a broken and guilty conscience torturing her, all she wants to do is leave Alaythia before Narumel keeps his word and attacks the city once again. Unsure of what to do, Andrew and Daniel set the stage for the three of them to return home.
Virginia comes face-to-face with the Architect of Skal Galmudaretz: Narumel. With the promise that Narumel will return her to shore if she hears his proposal, Virginia joins him in the captains quarters of the ship, where he tells her that he will stop destroying the city and spare its inhabitants on one condition: if she leaves Alaythia and never returns.

Ignoring the warning of her uncle, Virginia escapes her bedroom in hopes of finding out what is happening outside. In her escape, she runs into Charles at the top of the tower. Under the moonlit sky, she asks him more about Dark Cry and finally confronts him on all he has kept secret from her regarding himself. However, their time together is interrupted by a force more powerful than the City of Gaal has seen in generations.
Virginia wakes up in a room inside the Training Center campus with her uncle to greet her. Taken back by the heavy news that Daniel had shared with her, Virginia asks her final and most important question to Andrew about who she is and why people call her Cohen. The truth behind his answer is far more than what she had originally thought, paired with a destiny beyond her wildest dreams.

With their enemies now behind them, the company of four continue their journey to The City of Gaal. Hoping to lift her spirits and bring her comfort, Charles takes Virginia to a place that he has never taken anybody else—a place of tranquility and beauty.
