In this Lite Switch episode of The Old SwitchAroo, Mike and Jaymo are celebrating Gamesgiving with an extra special episode during the season break as they prepare for season four.

We start off with some general talk about Thanksgiving dinners and Jaymo has a list of quick food questions intended to divide the dining table in his Turkey Day NintenDO or NintenDON’Ts. Then, we’ll craft the ideal meal using just the power ups in the retro games we’ve played in past episodes in the Ultimate Power Up Plate. Finally, Mike and Jaymo each craft their ideal line-up of Nintendo Classics games for a Thanksgiving celebration in the Ultimate Nintendo Classics Three-Course Meal. Finally, Mike and Jaymo each share what they’re most thankful for about the The Old SwitchAroo.

Welcome back to the old Switcheroo, where we're talking
gaming retro with Mike and Jamo.I'm Mike.
And I'm Jamo in this episode of the old Switcheroo Light Switch.
Instead of our normal focus on the over 300 retro games
available on Nintendo Classics, we are celebrating games giving
2025 by breaking down our TurkeyDay, Nintendo's and Don'ts, as

(00:49):
well as crafting up the UltimatePower Up Plate and the Ultimate
Nintendo Classics 4 course meal. That's right, they're both
Ultimates. Subscribe or follow us on
YouTube, Spotify, Apple or wherever you listen so you can
get all the gaming goodness delivered just how you like it.
And of course, if you if you canalso give us a review anywhere,
we appreciate it. So actually we just got a five

(01:09):
star review this week. Yay.
Is there a username? Yes, Ryan.
Ryan. I don't think I know where,
Ryan. I don't, I don't think either of
us do, which is always nice. I.
Want to close my window? Window is closed.
Let me hear it. Yeah, so their review is, I've
been looking for a show like this for a long time.

(01:30):
It's fun listening to the history and the fun facts about
some of the games I used to play.
Keep up the good work. Ryan, you charmer.
Well, hey, listen, if you want to hear Mike's sultry voice,
read other reviews, leave them. That's that's awesome.
Thank you for sharing that, Mike.
Look at that. I've already got something to be

(01:51):
thankful for. That is awesome.
So let's get into it, Mike. Thanksgiving with the Luns.
Paint me a word picture. What's the usual situation with
you in this holiday? I think usually Thanksgiving
itself is very small. OK.
And that is because the extendedfamily events usually are not

(02:14):
Thanksgiving Day, or frequently aren't.
Right. Yeah, that's that's kind of my
situation too. So would your family host or
would you guys go travel? But we never host.
OK. People aren't in my house often,
you know that. Well, lovely family all the

(02:35):
same. Yeah, so one of my aunts usually
hosts for the main thing. Yeah.
And I think, I think every family has that like host
family, you know what I mean? It's like the most compatible
kind of lifestyle and homestead arrangement.
I I cook OK, you don't cook. Well, it's my Aunt Teresa that

(02:57):
hosts it. Like, baking is like, her job.
Oh, like it's like also meant that like she made my wedding
cake. Wow, Aunt Teresa showing up.
Yeah, so it is a large spread offood.

(03:18):
That's awesome. That sounds delicious and
expansive. I'm getting excited for you
already. We'll be both.
Yeah, You know, after my mom passed away, there was sort of a
period where the Strausses didn't really do Thanksgiving.
Like we'd go to like a Chinese restaurant or like Buca di Peppo
or something. But then the Strauss boys all
kind of started partnering up with people who do really big

(03:41):
Thanksgiving. So like, the Burtons crush it
every year. The Lemieux family, like they
had big Thanksgiving. My brother's partner was like an
incredible Baker. So it's like Thanksgiving is
kind of like gained excitement for me, but I feel like that's
just admitting that it's all about the food for me.
So Mike, I've got some Thanksgiving Nintendis or Dats.

(04:04):
I want to know your take on somecontroversial Thanksgiving food
choices and leave a comment if you disagree or agree with
Mike's choices. You ready?
I expect a lot of disagreement because my food stances usually
are disagreed with. OK, well, you know, you and I
will keep score. We'll see how compatible our
flavor pallets are. We'll see how many out of seven

(04:25):
we match up on. You ready?
All right. Number one, kind of give you a
softball here. We're going in nice and easy.
White meat or dark meat. White meat, I think.
Really, I like, I like the kind of gamier texture of dark meat.
What, what, What is it about white meat that that makes you
go that way? I'm being honest.
I take. I take some of both.

(04:47):
Yeah, right. I feel like dark meat gets a bad
rap. Like, OK, so I'm a dark meat.
Maybe. What if we don't match up on any
and that's why we work? Mike.
OK. All right, OK, this one.
Butter on your rolls or leave them dry for dipping and
swirling. I they stay dry the whole time.

(05:11):
They they stay dry the whole time.
Mike's going and dry. Really not even into the gravy.
I don't eat gravy. I don't eat gravy.
That's right, 'cause you're not really a soup.
Guy yeah or or a lot of sauces like it cooking now has gotten
trickier in so much as like I'llget like a Turkey and it'll come

(05:34):
with like these stuff for makingthe gravy to go with it and I
never bother with it. But now cat.
Likes gravy and it's like, OK, yeah, if you would like the
gravy, I'll take care of the rest of this.
If you if you feel like gravy, go for it.
And if you don't? You make her make her own gravy,
Mike. I do not know what I'm doing
with it. It's one of those things where
it's, it's the same thing like when people ask me to get stuff

(05:54):
for coffee. I'm like, I OK, what's the stuff
for coffee? You know, the usual stuff.
I don't drink it. I don't know.
Here, have these sticks that I don't know why they're they're
at every coffee shop, but they're there.
I'll bring them back. You stir the coffee, Mike.
I love it. I love that that is so not your
world. You never even learned the like

(06:16):
the not the language. Like the terms jargon?
Yeah, jargon. There you go.
There you go. OK, so we're we're you know, I'm
going to say we're synced up on that because I don't butter my
rolls. I do, I do gravy dip them.
But I still feel like the question was buttered or non
buttered. We're both non buttered.
OK, that's one point for the oldswitcheroo.
I I know the answer then to thisone.
I would bet then cranberry sauce.

(06:36):
Nintendo or don't. It's a, it's a don't, I don't
bother with it. Right.
Me neither. Yeah, it's too tart.
OK. We're having that one all right.
I, I was expecting your cranberry sauce question to be
like, because I think it's from the can or like from fresh
cranberries is I think of peoplethat eat it.
There's a distinction there. There's people who prefer the
canned. Yeah, I think it's one of those

(06:57):
tradition things like if you yourun into the same thing with
like Mac and cheese and get people who are like, oh, this is
this great home baked macaroni and cheese that's amazing.
And other people who are like, no, you have to get it from a
craft box. OK, I could see that.
I can see that which as. I don't eat it.
I mostly know that argument happens because it used to be
people would find out I've neverhad Mac and cheese and then the
remaining argument was not we need to have my eat Mac and

(07:20):
cheese. They would devolve into an
argument on that and forget about me.
You split the party. All right, So this one, this is,
I know this might be the most divisive Thanksgiving question.
Marshmallows on top of the sweetpotatoes.
Yay or. Nay, I think I go.
I think I go nay. Yeah, it's a reluctant nay for

(07:42):
me. Like I feel like I haven't had
it as an adult, so I'm curious to revisit it.
But historically, I've been a nay.
I feel like marshmallows have a have their place in Thanksgiving
dinner but not there. OK, well this next one is a
Washington because it's gravy onthe mashed potatoes, but I think
we know that's a no. That's a no.
Pumpkin pie, Nintendo or don't. No.

(08:04):
Really. My theory is that roughly, pie
gets better at the smaller the fruit it's from gets.
OK, so you really love Raspberrypie Berry?
Pies and cherry and cherry and Key Lime is only slightly
larger, but OK. OK.
And then like Peach and Apple are good but not as good.

(08:26):
And you hate pumpkin. It's like, OK, well, you know
something you never had? Jan Burton's pumpkin pie.
She has a secret ingredient thatI will not spoil on this podcast
unless you beg me by leaving a review.
And then I'll sell her family recipe right up the river.
Well, so then she also makes a very signature dish that I don't
even know if you've had mincemeat pie.

(08:50):
I don't think I have. OK, you've heard of it though.
I've I've heard of it. OK, well, it's, it's like a
savory fruit pie and and it it splits the family.
So I was just wondering where you landed.
OK, well, you know something, 4 out of seven, we're compatible.
Yeah, I, I, I think I associate as the Thanksgiving dinner would

(09:11):
be. I It has 2 great names which are
Ambrosia and Idiot's Delight. What did you just call me?
Can I get AT shirt that says no?Wait, what?
Those are pies. No, no, just a dessert.
It's sort of like fruit salad, but also marshmallows in there
and a few other things. OK, so it's fruit salad, but not

(09:33):
healthy for you and therefore not annoying.
Actually, I really love fruit salad.
My wife makes a great fruit salad.
It's it's fruit salad and then some other stuff.
Awesome. Well, let us know in the
comments what you think of our Thanksgiving takes and do you
have any controversial ones of your own?
All right, Mike, well, Next up you and I are gonna take a
little visit to the old switcheroo all night buffet for

(09:55):
you to build your own ultimate power plate.
Power up plate. These choices are all taken from
games that we have reviewed in previous episodes.
So if I name something that sounds tasty and you're
unfamiliar, go find it on www.theoldswitcheroo.com.
aroo.com. Am I right Mike?
I'm right. OK, so Monsieur, first up, you

(10:18):
have a selection of beverages tochoose from.
You can get ice cold lawn lawn milk from Ocarina of Time, the
random potion for our Scars, Unity mystery potion from
Zombies at My Neighbors, or tonic from Breath of Fire.
What will the gentleman be having?
I have had tonic water and I am not pleased with tonic water.

(10:39):
Yeah. It doesn't do anything in the
game either. Tonic is listed as used to
create tonic and I'm like what? This item creates itself.
Yeah, and Mystery Potion is alsonot great.
I think it could be great. I've got to die if you're.
Not in my experience. OK, so you're sick and was safe.

(11:00):
Nice ice cold milk. Yeah, it's not.
I don't normally have it with with a meal, but I think that
wins out here. Yeah, and it's safe and it gives
you some hearts back, you know, couldn't we always a little more
heart? All right, so Next up, this
might be the most exciting category.
Mike, we have a lovely selectionof sides for you to choose from.
Would you like to try the Applesfrom Super Mario World, the

(11:24):
apple from Spanky's Quest, or the quote UN quote apples from
Pokémon Snap? I think I got to go Super Mario
World. Yeah, I mean, but Yoshi eats
them, we don't. I mean, yeah, but I mean people
feel people feed horses apples too, and those can be the same

(11:47):
apples. You know what I just remembered?
In our episode, we covered that Yoshi was originally conceived
as like an ostrich or a horse, and I'll bet that's why they're
eating apples. Look at, look at you, Mike.
You're a smart one. You don't want to take a bite of
the apple with the sexy legs from Spanky's.
Not. Particularly, but that one's for

(12:08):
you, buddy. That one's for you, buddy.
All right, Next up, we have our meat course.
You have a selection of four to choose from.
Here you get jumbo meat. Sorry, sorry.
I can get through this. Joey, I'm offering my jumbo
meat. Jumbo meat from Joe and Mac 2,
the burger Patty from Burger Time.

(12:28):
Deluxe wall chicken from Castlevania.
There you go. Kai or the pot roast from Golden
Axe. I I was pre prepared for this
one wall chicken being an answerI would go with.
OK. So that's your choice.
Yeah, I'm, I'm, I thought about Joe and Mac in advance as well.
Yeah. But I'm, I think that's much

(12:49):
more in the beef realm. OK, And I mean, and you spit
bones out when you eat that one that that sounds kind of
painful. I I was hoping you'd pick the
pot roast because you'd have to chase it down the thief and kick
him to get the food out of his little screen sack.
I don't want my food to involve work.
Yeah, exactly. Yeah.

(13:10):
I wanted that I'd hunt. Well, but if you wait for the
gnome to run to you and you justhit it, that's kind of food
delivery. So like that was like the first
Uber Eats. There's a joke in there
somewhere. There's a video to be made there
where like he runs on the screenand Uber eats logos, right.
OK, Next up, a fish course. Your choices are Masher from

(13:32):
Sonic the Hedgehog 28 Arms from Echo the Dolphin, Unira from Klu
KLU Land, or the Bio Weapon fromStar Fox 64.
He's got to think about this one.
I'm not even sure what two of those are.
OK, you want to ask about them or you want to just be brave on
the menu? 8 arms from echo is octopus

(13:55):
correct? So I'm not messing with that
one. You don't do octopus?
No. Yeah, me neither.
Not even fried. I don't need anything, anything
that has demonstrated that much intelligence.
Was the one you didn't know bio weapon from Star Trek 64 that.
Was definitely one of them. Giant clam clam the size of like
a football stadium. All right.
Yeah, that's that one's also passed the the first one was.

(14:18):
Masher from Sonic 2, the metal fish that jumps up and bites you
when you run across the bridge. Yeah, I, I, I'm going to say I
feel like the metal is probably a definite problem there.
The third one was which one again?
The last one and so. But to be clear though, you do
get the animal inside the robot fish.

(14:42):
What what is the animal inside the robot fish?
Is that necessarily like a smaller fish or is that just
like whatever? Like is there like a squirrel
powering of fish? Well, I know it's not an actual
fish in there because when you break it, the animal hops away
and there's no fish that flop away.
Not in this game, I don't think Any actually all.
Right, that's what I figured. Though and then the last one is
Unira from Clu Clu land which isthe sea urchin enemies which

(15:06):
people do eat. Yeah, I, I'm, I think I'm going
to go with whatever random non fish is in master.
Because you're not a big fish guy.
Yeah. So you're like, kill the robot
fish. But hey, now I got a chicken.
I like chicken. It's an upgrade.

(15:26):
God would that be a really dark way to like you make ovens that
look like Sonic bad necks and you have to break them to get
the cooked meat inside? I thought it.
Was more of a turducken thing really.
Actually, that would make a really fun design for like a
hamster cage is it's transparentand looks like a bad nick, but
it's Oh my gosh, Etsy. Hey, listen, is it?

(15:48):
Can I talk to Etsy? No, it's just people, isn't?
It I don't know. You know someone with a 3D
printer. I know Justin's got a 3D
printer. Don't steal my idea.
I'm making this a thing. All right.
And so then Mike lastly for dessert, we have a slice of
Princess Peaches birthday cake after it's been used as a level
in Mario Party, a plain doughnutfrom Super Mario Kart or Kirby.

(16:16):
You know you want to know what Kirby tastes like.
Might. I think he's a kind of taffy.
Really. Everyone thinks marshmallow.
No, I'd I'd go taffy, possibly bubble gum.
Let us know in the comments whatKirby tastes like.
I wonder if there's a canonical answer.

(16:36):
OK, well so is that your answer? No, I, I I think I'd go birthday
cake and like cuz if worst case I can just like scrape off the
top layer. Sure of monkey footprints and
whatever rubble is left. After the bondage.
Yeah, exactly. Well, so Mike, your ultimate
power up plate, you will begin with a sip of ice cold La La

(16:58):
milk, followed by the apples from Super Mario World.
You will then be enjoying wall chicken from Castlevania,
whatever animal is inside Masherfrom Sonic the Hedgehog 2, and
ending with a slice of gently used, gently loved Princess
Peach's birthday cake. Let us know in the comments guys

(17:19):
what your plate would be. And that was fun.
OK, so Mike, we are a video gametheme podcast.
I thought it would be fun to craft a metaphorical 3 course
meal we just did with power ups.But now let's do it with actual
games in Nintendo Classics. We want your appetizer game to
start the evening light and fun, then your main course game that

(17:41):
has immense lasting appeal, and then you finish off with
something casual and relaxing for your dessert game to end the
night. Mike, take us through.
Did I say 4 course? That's three course, isn't it?
That's three. OK, three course meal.
All right, so. Important question, is this a
meal that is being shared or is this a single player meal?

(18:04):
I don't think many people would consider themselves celebrating
Thanksgiving if they're not withfamily.
I feel like that is kind of a big part of the holiday itself,
even though that can be stressful, you know, I almost
feel like that's part of it, too.
So I'm gonna say group. OK.

(18:25):
And. I think that makes sense once
you agree for games giving it should be like a group holiday
thing. I figured I'd ask.
I have answers. I had answers for both
approaches. All right, well, so give me your
appetizer game for a group setting.
Something kind of light and quick and fun.
So it must be. It must be a game we've covered
before Sonic 2. Why that one?

(18:46):
Because I think the the multiplayer on that is real
quick to jump into and I do associate that with playing that
and then having a main course ina sense from when like Burger
King used to have that in in therestaurants.
Wow, in a way it was your appetizer back in the day.
Yeah, it's a real quick in and it's basic enough that you don't

(19:09):
have to be like how you don't have to get deep into the game
to figure out what's going on. Yeah, yeah.
Well, so that's funny. Mine is also a Genesis game.
I went with Street Fighter two on this like a Genesis, you
know, granted the controls are not great if unless you manually
ship them in the options. But feel like Street Fighter,
it's just like really fast. It's very intuitive to pick up
and play. You might not be doing the

(19:29):
special moves unless you're a cheap bastard like Mike and just
do the same one over and over again.
But like I think that the average person could understand
what's happening on the screen and get how like the buttons
correlate. So like I feel like grandmas and
grandpas could pick it up and have a laugh and everyone kind
of gets a turn and the matches don't last very long, you know,

(19:49):
kind of kind of light hearted fun, I think.
So then your main course game, tell me what game from our 94
some games we've covered so far do you think has that play it
all night multiple hours lastingappeal game?
Mario Kart 64. Yeah, yeah.
But are you just sticking in battle mode like we're want to

(20:12):
do? I think I would because if
you're not fighting, what's the point of Thanksgiving?
I had that ready. He had that ready.
Folks, that was a good joke, Slash.
Not a joke at all. Yeah, I like it.
I like it. And you know, certainly when we
were kids we would play that game for hours on end to like
two or three in the morning. Just block for it, after block

(20:34):
for it. It just it just never gets old.
So awesome. I went with something with a bit
more variety to it. I went with Kirby Superstar for
the SNESI. Think you have all these
different game modes, so there'sa little flavour for everybody,
you know, really colourful graphics, these lengthy single
player campaigns to it and there's even some two player

(20:56):
modes. So I could kind of see digging
into that game all night long and you know, you'll find just
one enjoyable flavor after another.
That's that's my main course game all.
Right My my single player on that one would have been linked
to the past. So if you're for the single
dinner. OK.
Oh, I see. What you're doing is a single
player or multiplayer. Yeah, but see, I think Kirby's
Superstar though, can kind of fill both roles because like the

(21:19):
mini games where you're against a human opponent, those are
super quick. And often the Kirby levels
themselves are really quick. So I think it would be kind of a
good pass the controller around kind of single player game.
Yeah, no, no, wrong interpretation.
And then my dessert game, Mario Party, right.
I feel like it's light hearted. Everyone's full of food, they're

(21:40):
full of wine, you know, they don't want to take something
that seriously. So Mario Party, it gets people
cracking up and maybe it'll cause a huge fight and then
everyone wants to go home. That's perfect.
Meals over, go home. What's your dessert game?
I'll briefly mention my single play, single person dinner.

(22:01):
OK option. Yeah, Pokémon Snap.
OK, OK. You can kind of just sit away
and play that game forever. I mean, you have 100% of it
several times. Yeah.
Or at least I've I've rolled, I've hit a couple levels of
rolling credits on that. Yeah, yeah, in different
iterations. But yeah, I think it's I think
it's, it is fairly low key. So it's relaxing.

(22:27):
Yeah, yeah, I agree. And then for more than one
person, but still has a core like relaxing element to it.
And because you all said and kind of give people a nudge,
like, yeah, I enjoy this a little bit, but then please
leave. Previous the.

(22:49):
Avenger. Sorry, no, nobody wants to say
after that, even if you live there.
Mario's Super Super Pick Cross. Mario's super pick cross OK I
see you. It kind of has a doing a
crossword puzzle on the newspaper while you're full of
pie kind of vibe. I, I could see it OK.

(23:11):
And then everyone in the room iskind of contributing where they
think you should chisel away at and.
And it does have the two player. And it does have the two player
wow deep cut. It felt like a deep cut.
I don't. Does that count as a deep cut I?
Don't know. I don't know.
But yeah. And it's honestly the kind of
game that like is that I find asa relaxing thing to go to.

(23:32):
Yeah, 100%. Well, Mike, I think we should
end this game's giving by sayingwhat we are each thankful for.
So I think you did your homework.
Do you have something that you would like to give thanks to or
4. I don't know what the
preposition would be I. Think I'd probably just say just
in, in general the the extra opportunities that come along

(23:54):
with this like obviously I thinkthe top that would be having
Timmy on. Yeah.
Which is just not a thing that Ithought was going to happen.
Sure, yeah. So it still feels surreal.
And maybe he'll come back, you know, maybe Nate Brown, come on
back, Sam Brown jump in like it's going to be a good time.
And. Then they'll Ninja Gaiden 2 just

(24:15):
came, just got announced so. I thought of Timmy as I often
do. I thought of Timmy immediately.
But that would be fun though, because like we discussed how
that game will be different. So like, it'd be fun to see.
Well, so I'm thankful for I mean, I'm thinking for our
entire audience, you know, however big or small it might

(24:36):
be, like you guys are amazing, especially those of you that
have been on the discord or guested or you know, give given
those short form content alike, you know, it's just just so
awesome because you know, it's just feels feels good.
You guys are spreading the love 1 little thumb click at a time,
and I love you for that. But I, I think that former
students who are appreciating the podcast, I love that so

(25:00):
much, you know, cuz like in the classroom, you know, you kind of
time is precious. And I've never been a teacher
where like I really get super into personal lives and things
like that. So I just love the idea that
former students are kind of getting to see a different side
of me, and they are also sharingthe love.

(25:21):
So yeah, that's cool. And if you're a current student,
I like my students this year. So thank you as well for being
cool. I got a cool job, and this is a
cool hobby. And I don't know, I think both
are important. OK.
Well, I think Mike ready to callit game over for today.
I think so. Well, a very happy Thanksgiving

(25:42):
to all of you. And if you don't celebrate, just
a happy fall season to you. Until next time, Please remember

I've been Mike. And I've been jamo game on
everyone. Dang it, I had the best pun.
Mike, please put this back in. You're still recording, right?

(26:46):
It's not a, it's not a filler episode.
It's stuffing.
