May is mental health awareness month, and awareness around mental wellness has never been more important. Although I do not have the training in treating psychological disorders, I do see physical manifestations of mental (brain) illness and I’m using this episode to talk about my clinical experience of the effects that brain illness has on our physical bodies. I also share a unique story about a patient living with multiple personality disorder.

Health Topic: Brain Illness and the Body

What is it?: A brain illness is a dysfunction in the natural function of the brain. Brain illnesses include but are not limited to: depression, anxiety, psychotic disorders, add/adhd and bipolar disorder.

Tips from an Osteopathic Perspective: If you are struggling with your mental wellness right now, don’t wait to seek help from a medical doctor. Asking for imaging, and being very clear with what your symptoms are, could help you get a proper diagnosis. Keep a  journal of what your concerns are to be able to track any changes in your mental, physical and emotional states, and be gentle with yourself. You are living through a pandemic, life is not easy right now.

THE TAKE AWAY:

From a manual osteopathic perspective, it’s important we understand the brain illness our client is experiencing, but we don’t treat their psychological concerns, we treat their somatic dysfunction. This means, through very specific palpation, we apply techniques to the brain and spinal cord that help nourish and ensure the flow of cerebrospinal fluid. We also treat the physical manifestations of the brain illness.
