Tracy (00:00):
Know to self.
Be a little bit more carefulnext time and maybe set a timer.
Welcome to the Only ChildDiaries podcast.
I'm your host, Tracy Wallace.
Have you ever felt like youdidn't receive the how-to
brochure on life, that youdidn't get enough guidance about
major life issues?
So did I.

(00:21):
You don't have to be an onlychild to feel this way.
In my podcast, we'll exploresome of the best ways to better
navigate adulting, while doingso with humor and light.
Welcome everyone to the OnlyChild Diaries podcast.

(00:53):
Today, I'm going to talk aboutmy third anniversary.
That's right.
It's three years in total sinceI started the Only Child
Diaries podcast, and I'm reallyproud to say that it's quite an
accomplishment.
I feel like I've done a lot ofepisodes.
I thank you all for listeningto all the content that I've
created.

(01:14):
I've been honored to have asmany of you listen from all the
places around the globe.
It means a lot to me.
I've enjoyed sharing my storieswith you, and I hope that my
stories and my reflections haveprovided you with well, some

(01:35):
comic relief first of all, butalso some insight into your own
life.
Now I want to share someexciting news, and that is that
last.
Was it last week.
Yeah, it was just last week.
Sometimes time goes by so fastand sometimes, well, there's so

(01:58):
much that happens that it feelslike a week is more like a month
, right, a week is more like amonth right.
But last week I finallyrecorded my interview with my
new friend Well, she's not mynew friend, but it feels like my
new friend Leslie Berlin, who'salso an only child.
She reached out to me on socialmedia Gosh, it's been a while

(02:23):
and she wanted to talk about mypodcast, collaborating, being a
guest, et cetera, and we hadplanned to do the interview as
soon as last Christmas about, but life kept getting in the way
as it often does.
Anyway, we finally did theinterview and as soon as I can

(02:45):
edit it which is going to takeme a while to get to then I'll
post it, probably sometime inSeptember.
So we have that to look forwardto and I'm really happy to say
that we did that and it's goingto be great for you to listen to
.
Leslie is an only child, but herparents divorced when she was

(03:10):
very young and she had thebenefit of having many cousins,
which I didn't have that in myfamily.
So I think from her perspective, she had more sort of extended
family support, so it's adifferent story from mine.
She also has a husband, ofcourse, and two sons.

(03:36):
I've never had any children, soshe has different stories to
share and I think you'll enjoylistening to the interview.
Anyway, let's talk about theOnly Child Diaries and who's
listening and where they'relistening from, because I think
this is really something that isquite interesting.

(04:00):
I know I really get excitedwhen I see the demographics come
up on my side Sometime.
In the last month or so, we'vehad many new countries added to
our list and, as of this moment,we have 58 countries in total

(04:20):
listening to the only childdiaries.
Of course, most of ourlisteners are in North America,
and that includes the UnitedStates, obviously, mexico and
some in Canada.
The next percentage oflisteners are in Europe and then

(04:44):
Asia, and then we have somesmall numbers in South America,
africa and Oceania, as it'scalled on this app, which is
Australia, the Australia area.
The countries obviously withthe most percentage of listeners
besides the United States areMexico, coming in second, and

(05:08):
then Germany and now Hong Kong, which has rapidly moved up the
list.
That's a big surprise to me,but welcome the Netherlands,
australia, the United Kingdomand Canada, but we also have a

(05:29):
fairly good presence in India.
Now the Russian Federation, which I assume means Russia,
philippines, france, israel, newZealand, france, israel, new

(06:06):
Zealand, spain, ireland, theUkraine.
Welcome.
Ukraine, indonesia, greece,nigeria, krakow, ethiopia,
French Guiana, singapore,slovenia, cyprus, pakistan,
denmark, dominican Republic, malaysia, kenya, hungary, zambia

(06:31):
, brazil, aruba, benin, paraguay, montenegro, thailand, and this
one I'm probably going to saywrong, because I'm not sure I've
ever heard of it before Sekeles, it's S-E-Y-C-H-E-L-L-E-S.

(06:55):
I'm going to show my ignoranceon that one Zimbabwe, poland,
which is kind of exciting to mebecause I'm mostly Polish on my
mother's side, turkey, krakistan, I think that's how we say it
Guyana, the Congo, slovakia, united Arab Emiratis, honduras,

(07:23):
iran, sweden and, last but notleast, gambia.
It reads like a wonderfultravelogue, doesn't it?
In terms of cities.
It's also broken down in cities.
We have 602 cities with LosAngeles, and I'm not going to

(07:47):
read all 600, so don't panic, but Los Angeles is the highest
percentage.
Then my own hometown here ofGlendale, california, burbank,
california, ensenada, bajaCalifornia.
So there you go, and the fifthhighest is Frankfurt, which is

(08:08):
in Germany.
So welcome everyone tolistening, and I'm so proud to
have as much of an internationalcross-section as we have, and I
just think that that's reallyexciting because I know, for me
the world is.
The world is small, right, theworld is smaller when we all

(08:33):
come together and we share ourthoughts and feelings.
Now, one thing that I learned Idon't know if you guys all
listened to the interview that Idid on another podcast, and
that was a Canadian one, withMichele Thomson, and I was very

(08:54):
excited to do that.
The podcast is called Lead FromWithin and that just came out
in early August.
So if you haven't listened tothat, please go ahead and find
her.
She's on Apple Podcasts, butshe's also on different
platforms Lead From Within withMichele Thomson and that was my

(09:18):
first interview with someoneelse and I really enjoyed doing
it and sharing my thoughts onemotional intelligence with
Michelle.
She's really a great host andwhat I learned from her is that
because I left a review on Applepodcasts for her, because I do

(09:38):
really enjoy her podcast and Ilisten to it as much as I can
there's so many podcasts nowthat I really enjoy listening to
.
But she said that she can't seereviews if they're not from
Canadian listeners, which Ididn't realize.
So perhaps that's true for meIf there's people that leave

(10:02):
reviews that are outside of theUS.
Perhaps I can't see them either, I'm not sure.
I guess I have to look intothat.
But anyway, interesting point.
So I really appreciate yoursupport and I really appreciate
your listenership.
And please, if there's any uhcomments or suggestions or

(10:28):
thoughts that you have about theonly child diaries, I'd be more
than happy to listen to yoursuggestions or comments or ideas
about future episodes.
I really would, and I'vereached out to other people for
interviews.
There are a couple of folksthat have asked to be a guest on

(10:53):
the Only Child Diaries and Ithink most of it is just
figuring out scheduling.
I think one of the morechallenging parts of scheduling
is when people are in differenttime zones.
There's one gal that's acomedian that's back in New York

(11:14):
and it's a little bit harderfor me to accommodate an
interview if it's.
You know, let's say they'remorning people and that I'm
three hours behind them.
So, cause I'm not a morningperson but having to fit into a

(11:38):
schedule, it's really hard forme also to schedule ahead too
far because I'm never reallysure.
For last week and my cat, mybeloved cat, bobby, who is my

(12:03):
heart and soul, he startedthrowing up while I was
recording on the tape because Iedited that out.

(12:25):
But my dear boy.
So I was monitoring him andtaking care of him and dealing
with all that and he wasn'tgetting any better and so I had
to take him to the emergency vetand he checked out fine.
They were a little confusedabout why he was so sick to his
stomach.
Since he's diabetic, it'salways a worry that he's in some

(12:47):
sort of emergency diabeticstate, that something's
happening with his blood sugaror something, because I know
that's what happens to myhusband when he's really sick to
his stomach.
But anyway, he checked out fine, but they sent him home with me
.
He had to be sedated because hewas not a compliant patient he

(13:08):
hardly ever is a compliantpatient and so they sent him
home and he was very sedated andI let him out of the carrier
and his legs were just allspread out and he was splayed
and he was, you know, not sureit was like drunk cat, drunk
kitty.
So I didn't sleep very wellthat night watching him and

(13:33):
taking care of him because wegot back pretty late.
He's better now, but he had.
But he had kind of an episodeyesterday and it's just really
hard on both of us the cat andme to take him in, and also the
ER vet that was treating him wasnot.

(13:54):
I could tell that she was notvery familiar with diabetic
issues.
Because of some of the thingsthat she said to me and some of
the questions that she asked, orsome of the, she was a little
bit judgy.
She was very judgy about hiseating habits and so and the

(14:15):
insulin delivery that he getsand I wanted to say something
but I didn't because it wouldn'thave really helped the
situation.
All I needed to know was if hegot fluids and he got
anti-nausea meds and if he wasokay if he got his blood work
done and if he was okay if hegot his blood work done and all

(14:36):
that.
So he did and he checked out, fine.
But I think he just goesthrough these periods of time
when, especially in the summer, when he has these issues.
Yeah, we went through it lastsummer, so I'm always close to

(14:59):
home with him.
We also went again this weekend.
We went to finish cleaning outthe stall locker for my horse
who passed away.
I'm finally giving up the stalland, oh my gosh, the dust, the
level of dust pulling out thisstuff was absolutely ridiculous.

(15:21):
I look like a big dust ball Allthese things that I had
collected over 23 years, pullingthem out covered in inches of
dust.
But had to get through it andwe did it and so thank goodness.

(15:42):
And it's just hard, it's hardto let go sometimes, but I'm
working through that and I feelbetter this time than I did.
We went two weeks ago to startthe process.
I mistakenly thought we wouldbe able to get through it in one

(16:03):
night.
That wasn't going to happen.
Anyway, trying to clean up thestuff that we got and give some
of it away, that's where I'm at.
Oh, and let me just let me justgive you an update on my
tangerine tree.
I um talked to you last weekabout the arborist visit and she

(16:24):
had suggested watering it on aweekly basis, so I put the hose
in there after she left.
I put the hose about eight to10 feet away from the base of
the tree because she said that'swhere the roots would catch the
water.
I let the hose trickle forprobably about five or six hours

(16:48):
and everything was good.
And I know the city that I livein is a little bit nervous
about water usage and I'vegotten texts before from them,
but I was fine.
So this week I did it again andit was it's because it's been
really hot and very humid, andso I was, you know, following

(17:10):
her orders, directions on thetree, put the hose out there, I
think maybe I know I did I putthe hose out there and I ran the
water probably a little toostrong, and I also forgot about
it, and it ran out there forprobably 12 hours.

(17:32):
12 hours, oh dear, I am theweakest link.
So I did go out there after awhile and I turned the water
down, the volume of the waterdown, but probably not enough.
So the next morning I got atext from the city saying that
they suspected that we had aleak.
And I knew that we probablydidn't have a leak anywhere on

(17:56):
the property, but I clicked thelink and it told me how much
water we had used the day before.
And oh, it seems kind ofunbelievable, but I used 1,320
gallons of water, yeah, and ifyou looked at the spot where the

(18:20):
hose was, it's next to the bigbird of paradise thing.
There's some weeds there not alot of weeds, but there's some
weeds and there must be somesort of like what do they call
it Like a hollow leg.
When you're so hungry you eat.
There's a hollow leg.
There must be some sort ofhollow spot there.

(18:42):
I don't know where all thatwater could have gone.
I told my husband about it.
He goes, well, that's not true.
And I said, well, it must betrue because they registered on
the meter, I mean.
And he goes, well, we're notgoing to have to pay for that,
are we?
I said, well, yes, we are, butlive and learn right.
First world problems.

(19:04):
I did look up how much anaverage pool takes, because I
was getting kind of concerned, and that's probably about 10,000
to 20,000 gallons of water.
So I'm not there.
Maybe this is like a smallwading pool.
So, note to self, be a littlebit more careful next time and
maybe set a timer after four orfive hours to go out and turn it

(19:28):
off so you don't get any morenasty messages from the city,
right, yikes.
But maybe it just allevaporated, I don't know.
Anyway, that's my story.
So thank you again for listeningto the Only Child Diaries
podcast.
I'm humbled and appreciate yoursupport so very much.
