The Super Bowl is more than just a game, it's a cultural phenomenon that unites us all, right?  So who cares if I actually watch the GAME?  This week I'm exploring the  allure of the Super Bowl, even for those of us who aren't die-hard football fans. Through the lens of my own experiences, particularly, I reflect on the ritual of gathering with friends and family, the excitement of the pre-kickoff show, and the shared moments that transcend the sport itself. From the dramatic tributes to the entertaining halftime show, this episode captures the spirit of what makes the Super Bowl a beloved event for so many.  And hey, it's a great time to go shopping!  LOL.

Tracy (00:00):
It's a big day to come together as friends and family
and eat yourself silly.
Welcome to the Only ChildDiaries podcast.
I'm your host , T racy Wallace.
Have you ever felt like youdidn't receive the how-to
brochure on life, that youdidn't get enough guidance about

(00:20):
major life issues?
So did I.
You don't have to be an onlychild to feel this way.
In my podcast, we'll exploresome of the best ways to better
navigate adulting, while doingso with humor and light.
Welcome everyone to the OnlyChild Diaries podcast.

(00:41):
Child Diaries podcast.
Today I'm going to talk aboutsports and the Super Bowl.
I'm motivated by the Super Bowlbecause it happened this week.
It's a big sports week forthose of you who are sports

(01:02):
aficionados.
Personally, I don't reallyenjoy the Super Bowl or football
in general.
Don't hate me.
I enjoy an occasional footballgame.
I'm a USC alum so I like towatch one or two USC college
football games per year.

(01:23):
I like to see my team win, butin general I don't really enjoy
sitting and watching a wholegame every week or every other
week or every day or howevermany games there are.
I just don't have the patienceright.
There's a lot to it and really,as a general rule, I don't

(01:48):
understand football that well.
I don't understand the strategylike I do with baseball.
I understand that a lot betterand I like to watch baseball.
I watch more baseball, as arule, than football, especially
during the season.
It's more of a springtime,summer thing and it's more

(02:11):
relaxing to me to sit and dosomething and watch baseball,
especially because my husbandlikes to watch a lot of the
Braves games of the Braves games.
But we're talking aboutfootball and the Super Bowl and

(02:31):
I do enjoy somewhat parts of theSuper Bowl.
I watched the pre-kickoffentertainment and the intro
messages, if you will, thepieces from Bourbon Street and
the Lady Gaga performance, and Iwas touched by how they wove

(02:52):
together not only the losses thevery sad losses in New Orleans,
but also the fires here in LosAngeles and the other losses
that we've suffered here in theUnited States, and then the
whole thing with Bradley Cooperand Jon Hamm introducing the

(03:13):
teams.
I thought that was a nice touchand in general I like the
Chiefs and the Eagles.
I have a special place in myheart for Philadelphia because
Bill and I traveled there whatwas it four or five years ago
and we really enjoyed the city alot and although I'm not, again

(03:34):
, a big football fan.
I do root for Philadelphia inmy heart.
Oh, all right, so I didn't seethe halftime show yet.
I'm going to go back and watchit on YouTube, but I've seen
parts of it today on TV and Iheard a lot about it.

(03:59):
I think that in general, thehalftime show is always a big
highlight of the game.
And, of course, the commercials.
I think this year thecommercials that I've seen have
been well, maybe slightlydisappointed.
Usually we see the commercialsand we're like, oh, it's so

(04:20):
clever, right, this year they'reclever.
Yeah, there's some good ones, but I'm not sure I feel the same
way about them.
I think, overall, the processand the time that it takes to
watch the Super Bowl, the wholeexperience is really a shared
experience with our fellowAmericans, whether or not you

(04:44):
are a fan of either team, whether or not you are a fan of
either team, because it'ssomething that we share as
citizens of our country.
It's something that wecelebrate.
It's a big day to come togetheras friends and family and eat

(05:05):
yourself silly, have a couple ormore beers and really enjoy
your time with the people thatyou care about.
Right, and that's what'simportant about it.
There's been some backlashabout some things that happened

(05:25):
during the commercials, duringthe game, during the pregame,
postgame, whatever.
I don't know.
There's always that going onright.
I'm not going to comment on anyof that.
I think there were some thingsthat I wanted to see that
happened and some things that Ididn't want to see that happened

(05:49):
.
But I do enjoy all thedifferent parts of it besides
the football play, the nationalanthem, just everything else.
But did I watch the whole game?
No, I watched the beginning andI watched the end.
What did I do in the middle?
The dog and I got in the car.

(06:10):
We had to go run a couple oferrands, and traditionally this
is a great time to go runerrands.
If you've never figured thisout, it's a great time to get in
the car.
There's not as much traffic.
If you need to go do somethingin a traditionally busy store,

(06:30):
it's a great time to go, becauseeverybody's home watching tv or
everybody's in a bar.
Now we tried doing this lastyear.
I thought it would be great togo to Knott's Berry Farm the day
of the Super Bowl, and it endedup.

(06:51):
There was a lot of trafficgetting there, so that didn't
work out too well for me, andthen when we were first there in
the park, it wasn't too bad,but after halftime it got busier

(07:14):
, so that also didn't work outtoo well for me.
But some things that I've donein the past years on Super Bowl
day was go to the Verizon store, where it was traditionally a
long wait to get some help.
One year I went in, I justbreezed right in no appointment
and got everything done licketysplit.

(07:36):
It's also like going out whenwell, it used to be, when you'd
go out on Oscar night, becauseeverybody would be home watching
the Oscars, right, it's not somuch like that anymore, because
people can watch it another timetoo.
Anyway, don't hate me because Idon't watch sports.

(08:00):
The only time I really enjoysports is when I've been in
Vegas and I've been betting onit, because then I can really
root for my team or the teamthat I've bet on, rather, and
it's a lot more fun if you win.

(08:21):
And then, if you don't win, then you've lost money and it's
not as much fun.
Don't win, then you've lostmoney and it's not as much fun.
I've just never been a bigsports person.
I do have favorite teams and Ilike to hear that they won, but
I just I don't have the patienceto sit through a three or four
hour game like every day.

(08:42):
I just don't, and I don't getinto the personalities and all
that stuff.
So anyway, but we're done withfootball for this year and soon
it'll be time for springtraining for baseball.
We'll be on to the regularseason and that's kind of
exciting because, like I said, Ilike baseball better.

(09:07):
And coming up this week isValentine's Day.
So I hope, whatever you do, youhave a great Valentine.
If you don't have a specialperson in your life, maybe you
have a special pet, maybe youhave a special friend, a
girlfriend, same-sex friend, maybe your parents, maybe your
aunt, your uncle, somebody thatyou can wish a happy Valentine's

(09:32):
Day to.
And if not, just wish yourselfa Valentine's Day, a special
surprise, a special wish, aspecial gift.
That's what it's all about Love.
We have to love each other.
Well, folks, that's all I'vegot for today.

(09:53):
Next week we'll tackle anothertopic together.
I hope you'll join me.
