The Oswald Project

Many of you, like myself, have loved and benefitted from Oswald Chamber's daily devotions, My Utmost For His Highest. First published in 1935, it has been translated into 39 languages and has sold more than 13 million copies. For years, I have journaled through Oswald's challenging daily discipleship devotionals, and now, through audio podcasting, I'm able to share his unique Scriptural insights in tandem with my personal reflections and teaching notes.

Some of you may be old enough to remember the 1960s, when new cultural norms were introduced, such as "If it feels good...do it!" It was a time of rebellion against what had previously been considered good, correct, moral, or biblical. It was a time of throwing caution to the wind to just follow your heart, as if the heart were the center of righteousness, truth and integrity--which the bible declares it not to be.

In the life of the Apostle Paul, adversity and trials were a way of life--a way of living his life for the cause of the gospel of Jesus Christ. To Paul's enemies, it was absurd to think he lived this life of suffering for a just cause. In their way of thinking, he must be living some secret sin, and God was punishing him for it. Have you ever been accused of something by a person who had no clue as to what the truth really was?...

Acts 24:16 encourages us to strive to have a conscience without offense toward God and men. However, our culture encourages us to rely on therapists to help us ease and even erase any feeling of guilt because guilt is considered harmful to our self-worth and self-esteem. The problem is that while our culture encourages sin, we won't acknowledge or find value in the guilt our sin produces.

There's an old saying that goes, "practice makes perfect." I don't know about the "perfect" part, but I do know that practice makes progress. Spiritually speaking, practice can produce godly habits that lead to godly character, but even our spiritual habits can be gods that we worship instead of God Himself. Pride is deceptive, and we need to always examine our motives so we don't begin to get puffe...

Today, we're in Proverbs, an extensive collection of wisdom in the Bible, penned in short clips so that Solomon could share with us lessons he learned from doing some things right and things he learned from doing many things wrong. Solomon was made King of Israel after the death of his father, King David. Solomon started out great, as you'll see in 1 Kings 3:6-15, but not long after, the wheels began to fall off the bus as ...

From the book of Revelation, Jesus revealed many things to the Apostle John about the future, but in today's devotional, Oswald Chambers takes us into the past to be encouraged by a letter to a small congregation who Jesus commended for their brave, unwavering perseverance through trials and persecutions. Let's listen and be encouraged together.

Today, it's typical that people who claim they want to follow Jesus simply "ask Him into their heart," with no thought that it might actually cost them something. Such was not the case 2000 years ago, so what has changed? Here in Luke 14:28, Jesus insists that before one says they want to follow Jesus, they need to know that the commitment comes with a cost. Yes, something has changed—but it's not Jesus.

To many, the liberty to do whatever you want to do when you want to sounds like freedom. But, it doesn't sound like freedom to the Christian. The Christian, before Christ, was a slave to his own thoughts and impulses, never in alignment with Jesus Christ. Instead of freedom, the Bible calls it slavery, and the one cracking the whip is Satan, the father of lies. Are you a Christian? Then pause and thank God for your freedom in ...

The term "judgment" doesn't always mean condemnation. Sometimes judgments are arrived that result in a positive outcome. This is the meaning of the Apostle Peter's statement in 1 Peter 4:17 when he says, "For it is time for judgment to begin at the house of God."

They say patience is a virtue. Can someone please pass me some patience? I'm running short today! Sound familiar? Well, join the ranks of the human race--and join the prophet Habakkuk as he struggles to wait on God's timing!

There's nothing wrong with inspiration. Every Christian needs to be inspired by the great heroes in the Bible and the stories of God's faithfulness today. The problem occurs when we find ourselves living on inspiration alone. In today's devotion, Oswald Chambers reminds us of the contrast between walking by inspiration and walking by faith.

Love. We use the word "love" for everything. I love my wife--and I love ice cream. It isn't easy to distinguish the difference when we use the same word for both expressions of.......love.

In the Bible, God's love is measured by (A) the degree to which the person loved does not deserve to be loved, and (B) the greatness of the price paid to love a person. No wonder the love of God is the greatest love of all. To wh...

You and I don't have the spiritual vision to know everything about what it will be like when Jesus Christ appears, but this much we do know: We will finally be wholly and completely like Him! The spiritual life, this side of heaven, is the life of a child. We're not uncertain about God—we're just wonderfully uncertain of what He's going to do next!

2nd Timothy is the apostle Paul's goodbye letter. It's #13. Starting in verse 6 of chapter 4 and verse 2, Paul is willing to bare his soul and let us see behind the curtain as to how he feels at this final hour of his life and ministry. How many of us could say, with confidence, that we had fought the good fight and run the good race? The good fight and the race of what? Faith. It was for faith that Jesus would soon reward...

In today's devotional, Oswald speaks directly to the born-again Christian disciples of Jesus and shares Jesus' warning regarding the temptation to chase after ministry success. Oswald says, "The trap we fall into is extravagantly desiring success; that is, success measured by, and patterned after, the form set by this religious age in which we now live. Well, Oswald Chambers went home to heaven in 1917. How much more h...

I hope this day finds you in good health and able to work hard for your family and the Lord. But listen to the wisdom of the Scriptures. The Lord wants us to be diligent in caring for our families, but He also cautions us to seek the kingdom of God first, and He promises He will take care of everything we need. Today, Oswald reminds us not to worship our work. The only One worthy of our worship is Jesus Christ. Amen? Amen!

Most of us are familiar with the phrase "You are what you eat." Now, we know we are not literally what we eat, but there's a direct correlation between what we put into our bodies and the effects it has on our physical, emotional, and mental health. Right? In the same way, the Apostle Paul reminds us that "You are what you behold!"

Jesus' disciples had a hard time with many things he told them. In John 14, Jesus tells his men that He and the Father are One and the same. He says, if you've seen Me--you've seen the Father. But if you keep reading, you'll see that it was more than they could comprehend. It was a leap of faith too big for them at the time. And on another occasion, Jesus told them that if a person sins against them seven times in...

In today's podcast, Oswald challenges his readers to consider their state of "readiness." He says, "When God speaks, many of us are like people in a fog, and we give no answer. He also points out that we sometimes wait on God with the idea that some great opportunity or something sensational will come our way, and when it does come, we are quick to cry out, "Here I am!" Whenever we sense that Jesus Chri...
