Many of you, like myself, have loved and benefitted from Oswald Chamber's daily devotions, My Utmost For His Highest. First published in 1935, it has been translated into 39 languages and has sold more than 13 million copies. For years, I have journaled through Oswald's challenging daily discipleship devotionals, and now, through audio podcasting, I'm able to share his unique Scriptural insights in tandem with my personal reflections and teaching notes.
How can a man be born when he is old? It's a question Jesus asked 2000 years ago and one that still puzzles people today. But far from being hidden, the answer is in plain sight, in the pages of the Bible. It's actually true. A man who is old really can be born--again.
Author and theologian C.S. Lewis once wrote, "We are not necessarily doubting that God will do His best for us, but we do wonder how painful His best will turn out to be." God's best for us sometimes comes in the form of His discipline or His correction, but who among us looks forward to getting "called out" by God?
It must be possible to quench the Holy Spirit. Otherwise, the Apostle Paul would not have commanded us not to do so. In the same way, it must be possible to grieve the Spirit; otherwise, in Ephesians 4: 30, Paul would not have commanded us not to do it. So, what is the difference? To find out, be sure and listen to today's episode of the Oswald Project.
When the crisis comes and great courage is required, God expects His people to be so confident in Him that they are the dependable ones. Today, we look at Jesus' disciples in action and realize that, like His disciples, you and I only trust Jesus up to a certain point.
Have you ever had someone in your life that you've looked up to and that you've depended on to the point that you don't know what you would do without them? That's probably how Elisha felt when, after years of being Elijah's protégé, the Lord, with very little warning, took Elijah to heaven. This is the subject of today's devotional. It may make you uncomfortable to think you have to go on alone, but for you...
Before one of his many Gospel Crusades, Dr. Billy Graham was challenged by a group of pastors about his understanding of the work of the Holy Spirit. His answer would no doubt have a direct bearing on their support of the crusade. After a moment of silence, Dr. Graham spoke. "I don't care how you get the Holy Spirit—just get Him!"
Do you remember the 1990 movie Home Alone? Eight-year-old Kevin McAllister gets left behind when his parents fly to Paris for a family vacation. In Luke 2, we find the story of another boy who gets accidentally "left behind." The boy's name is Jesus, and as always, Oswald Chambers digs deep and challenges us to consider whether we are intentionally living each day, going about our Father's business.
Jesus told His disciples, "Your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him. (Matthew 6:8). So, why pray? Also, why do we pray in Jesus' name? Is it just because it sounds official before a meal? What about "unanswered" prayers? What, if anything, is God doing between the time we make a request and the time when we perceive He has answered it? And..what does the cross have to do with prayer?
From His disciple's "view of the parade," God called Jesus to what seemed like an absolute disaster for Him and for them. It was bewildering to them that the Messiah could be killed on a Roman cross like a common criminal. Sometimes God's call on your life and the circumstances you face may seem bewildering, but for the Christian, nothing happens by chance. Everything has a purpose--a God-decreed purpose!
In Luke 18, we see Jesus on His final journey to Jerusalem to face his death on a cross. In today's devotional, Oswald Chambers challenges us to consider that Jesus has chosen us, called us, and bids us go with Him to our Jerusalem, the place of our death, as we live a disciple's life of dying to our own selfish ambitions.
In today's devotional, Oswald Chambers explores the path of self-examination to determine if we want to join Jesus in His mission for us, or whether we want to carry out our own mission for ourselves. Are we determined to debate God, or obey God?
Whether we like it or not, the Bible teaches us that the only way out of a trial--is through it! In Psalm 23:4, King David wrote: "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil. " I think many of us try everything to walk around the valley of the shadow of death--not through it! But, like it or not, that is not God's process for growing our faith.
We easily become disillusioned by people. We want to believe they will never lie to us, speak badly about us, or hurt us in any way. Another human being never disillusioned Jesus. He alone knows the evil of the human heart better than anyone. There is no one good but God. Jesus, being Himself God, needs no affirmation from any human being that He is Lord. He knows what He is--and He knows what you are. The question is: do you know ...
Did you know that the return of Jesus Christ is referenced in more than 500 verses of the Bible? It's been estimated that one out of every 25 verses in the New Testament refers in some way to the second coming. But not only does the Bible say Jesus is coming back...but He's coming back with clouds!
I recall the 80's, when I was working for the Xerox organization, and they had just embarked on a global new strategy called "Process Management." This involved a systematic approach to designing, implementing, monitoring, and optimizing business processes to achieve specific organizational goals. It entailed analyzing, improving, and managing workflows to enhance efficiency, consistency, and overall business performa...
IN the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus teaches the true meaning of what it is to be blessed, and He references no less than nine specific blessings. You may know them as the "beatitudes." Jesus uses the word "blessed," but in a manner very different from how you and I commonly use the term. We equate being blessed with being happy. And what is happiness? Happiness is having your. For the Christian follower of Jesus,...
In Jesus' day, the standard for religious righteousness was the Pharisees. They were the poster children of what it meant to be rekigious and "right with God." Then along comes Jesus with the announcement to the people in the pews that unless their righteousness exceeded that of the Pharisees, they would never enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Not exactly a way to win friends and influence people! Right? How could anyone b...
In progressive sanctification, God has to deal with us on the death side, dying to sin, but thankfully, He also deals with us on the life side. There are two aspects to biblical sanctification: First, there is definitive sanctification, which is when we are born again. It is a one-time act of God, regenerating the heart and mind to receive and believe the things of God. At this moment, we are given the power of the Holy Spirit, whi...
Sanctification is a biblical term that means to be set apart for a special purpose and to become progressively more like Jesus Christ. There is both a life side and a death side to sanctification. Here is a look at how Dietrich Bonhoeffer summarized the death side of sanctification in his book, The Cost of Discipleship. "When Christ calls a man, He bids him come and die."
The Christian is chosen and called by God to die t...
In Matthew 5:3, Jesus makes the statement, "Blessed are the poor in Spirit." To make sense of it, we need to understand the biblical meaning of 'blessed'. Many people equate being blessed with being happy. But if that were true, then what about Jesus' first twelve disciples? Were they always "happy?" Since we know that ten of these devoted followers of Jesus willingly died violent deaths for the sake...
