(00:00):
You are staring at your to-dolist.
Feeling completely overwhelmed.
You know you need to startworking, but you just can't.
So you scroll on social media.
Instead, you reorganize yourdesk, you check your email for
the 15th time.
Anything but the actual work, you are not lazy.
You are just stuck inoverwhelmed paralysis.

(00:22):
And I'm about to show you how tosnap out of it in five minutes.
Hi, I'm Cindy Gordon, aself-made entrepreneur, busy mom
and execution coach.
I've built and sold multipledigital businesses, and I'm the
founder of the GrowthCollective, a dollar a day
support system whereentrepreneurs get weekly office
hours, actionable courses, andcommunity that understands the

(00:46):
overwhelm struggle.
Here's what I know.
When you can't figure out how toget motivated, when you're
overwhelmed, it's not a youproblem, it's a method problem.
Before we dive in, if you're notgetting my weekly productivity
tips yet, grab them using thelink in the show notes.
They are the behind the scenessystems I use to stay productive

(01:06):
while running my business.
Today I'm sharing the mindsetshift that helped me break
through overwhelm, paralysis,and actually take.
Action.
The five minute action rulechanged how I approach my
hardest days.
If you want more informationlike this, plus my weekly tips
that over 1400 entrepreneurs useto stay motivated and on track.

(01:28):
Seriously get on my email listlink in the show notes.
I only send these specific tipsto my email subscribers.
They are not available anywhereelse.
The women that I work withconsistently struggle with this
exact pattern.
Your to-do list is a mile long.
Everything feels urgent.

(01:48):
You sit down to work and thenyou're suddenly frozen,
completely unable to decide whatto do first, let alone actually
do it.
So you tell yourself, okay, I'llstart after I have my coffee.
Or after you check your email orafter you feel a little bit more
motivated, but that motivation,it never comes.

(02:09):
Instead, you end up scrolling, procrastinating, literally doing
anything except the work thatmatters.
And then you beat yourself upfor wasting time, which makes
starting even harder tomorrow.
You're not unmotivated, you'reoverwhelmed.
When everything on your listfeels too big, your brain
completely shuts down.

(02:30):
So you are stuck in overwhelmedparalysis where you have so much
to do that you literally cannotdo anything at all.
Understanding why changeseverything here.
So when you're trying to figureout how to get motivated, when
overwhelmed, most people thinkthey just need more discipline
or better time management, butthat's not it.

(02:51):
Your brain avoids tasks thatrequire too much activation
energy.
When you look at a massiveproject or an overwhelming
inbox, your mind instantlycalculates how much effort it
will take.
When that number feels too high, your brain says nope, and steers
you toward easier, lessthreatening activities like

(03:12):
scrolling social media.
This is why procrastinationisn't actually about laziness or
lack of discipline.
It's your brain trying toprotect you from the discomfort
of overwhelm.
The task feels too big, soavoidance feels a little bit
safer.
The key insight here that mostpeople miss is that you don't
need motivation to start.

(03:33):
You need to start to get themotivation.
Action creates momentum.
Momentum generates themotivation that you've been
waiting for.
The five minute rule worksbecause it lowers that
activation energy barrier so farthat your brain stops resisting.
So how do you actually overcomeprocrastination when you're

(03:55):
stuck in overwhelm?
Let me walk you through thatfive minute action rule, it's
pretty simple.
Here's what I want you to try.
Commit to working for only fiveminutes.
Literally just five minutes, soyou're not committing to
finishing the project, not evenmaking significant progress.
Just five minutes.

(04:15):
Pick one task from youroverwhelming list.
Set a timer.
Work for exactly five minutes.
That's it.
The game changer here is thatafter those five minutes, you
have a complete permission slipto stop.
No guilt.
No, but I should keep going.
No.
Forcing yourself to pushthrough.

(04:36):
If you wanna stop after fiveminutes, you can walk away.
Feeling good about takingaction.
If you wanna walk away afterfive minutes, you can walk away
feeling good that you took someaction.
But here's what generallyhappens, and this is why this
rule is so powerful.
You actually keep going becausestarting that was the hard part.

(04:56):
Once you're in motion, stayingin motion feels easier than
stopping.
The hardest part isn't actuallydoing the work.
It's starting the work.
The five minute action Ruleremoves the pressure of
commitment and tricks your brainpast that activation barrier.
So here's how I want you to putthis into practice today.

(05:17):
When the resistance shows up,remind yourself you only have to
work for five minutes, notfinish it, not perfect it.
To build this routine, use thisfive minute rule at the hardest
time of the day.
For most entrepreneurs, that'sfirst thing in the morning when
the to-do list feels absolutelyimpossible.
Or mid-afternoon when yourenergy crashes, pick your

(05:40):
paralysis time and have thisrule ready.
The most common obstacle I hearis, but what if five minutes
isn't long enough?
What if I stop and never comeback?
So here's the reality check onthat.
Five minutes of progress beatszero minutes of paralysis every
single time, and usually thosefive minutes turn into 15 and

(06:04):
then 30, and then you look up atthe clock and you've been
working for an hour.
This is especially powerful ifyou have a DHD or struggle with
execution function.
The five minute action ruleworks with your brain instead of
against it.
It removes the overwhelm of Ihave to finish this whole thing
and replaces it with, I justhave to start for five minute.

(06:28):
Inside the Growth Collective.
We talk about strategies likethis every week during office
hours because this is such auniversal struggle.
Having other entrepreneurs whounderstand that motivation
doesn't come before action.
It comes after, makes stickingto it so much easier.
Let me give you some real lifeexamples of what the five minute

(06:50):
rule looks like in practice.
So you are overwhelmed by yourinbox.
You can't face opening it, butyou commit to five minutes of
responding to emails, just five.
So you're stuck on contentcreation.
The blank page feels paralyzing.
I know you know that feeling.
Set a timer for five minutes.
Just draft ideas.
Terrible ideas are fine.

(07:10):
You are just starting whenyou're avoiding client work
because the project feels toobig.
Commit to five minutes of simplyopening the file and reviewing
what needs to happen next.
When the admin tasks are pilingup and you can't decide where to
start, pick the smallest onefirst and you guessed it, work
on it for five minutes.

(07:32):
That's all I'm asking you to dois commit to five minutes.
I rely on the systemconsistently in my own business.
On days when I'm feelingoverwhelmed and can't get myself
to start, I tell myself justfive minutes.
Interacting on LinkedIn.
That happened this morning.
I was stuck in paralysis.

(07:55):
I was overwhelmed, but I toldmyself five minutes and I did it
nine times out of 10.
I keep working well past thosefive minutes because starting
was the barrier and not the workitself, and that was true this
morning during my LinkedInparalysis.
When everything feelsoverwhelming and you can't find
motivation, that's your sign tomake starting smaller, not to

(08:19):
wait for motivation to justmagically appear.
You don't need motivation tostart.
You need to start to get themotivation and the five minute
rule breaks the procrastinationcycle by removing the pressure,
lowering the barrier, andcreating momentum that carries
you forward.
So your challenge right now, notlater today, not tomorrow, but

(08:40):
right now, is to pause thisepisode and pick one task from
your overwhelming list.
Set a timer for five minutes andjust start.
After that five minutes, you canstop guilt free, but I'm betting
you won't want to.
This activation strategy is partof my reality check method that

(09:05):
Collective.
If you are an Instagram, I wouldlove to connect with you.
I want you to remember that wheneverything on your list feels
urgent and you're frozen andoverwhelm, simply reality check.
One thing that you can start forjust five minutes starting is
the success.
The rest is momentum.
And remember, you've got this,
