(00:00):
The reason you can't take actionwhen everything feels
overwhelming isn't because youlack motivation.
It's because your brain hasshifted into threat detection
mode instead of progress makingmode.
The solution isn't to pushharder, but to reality check
what's actually urgent versuswhat just feels urgent.
Hi, I'm Cindy Gordon, thecreator of the Reality Check
(00:20):
Method, and a business coach foroverwhelmed Entrepreneurs.
This is a bonus episode of TheOverwhelmed Entrepreneur
Podcast.
Welcome to the Overwhelmed toAction Week.
We are almost to the finish lineof our transformation journey,
and today we are diving into oneof the most frustrating
experiences that every businessowner faces.
(00:41):
It's knowing exactly what youneed to do, but feeling
completely unable to do it.
If you are sitting hereparalyzed by the sheer volume of
everything that needs to happen, then this episode is your action
taking roadmap.
You know the feeling your to-dolist looks like a novel.
Your inbox is exploding, andthree different urgent projects
(01:02):
are all demanding yourattention.
You are an entrepreneur, whichmeans you're supposed to be
decisive and action oriented, but instead you're sitting there
completely paralyzed by thesheer volume of everything that
needs to happen.
Here is what I see consistentlysuccessful, intelligent business
owners who can make complexdecisions suddenly can't decide
(01:24):
on what to work on first.
They know they need to takeaction, but the overwhelm
creates a gap between knowingand doing what feels impossible
to bridge.
This isn't a character flaw orlaziness.
This is your brain's completelynormal response to cognitive
overload.
When we're overwhelmed, ourbrains shift into threat
(01:45):
detection mode.
Instead of focusing on progress,we're scanning for all the
things that could go wrong.
Every task feels equallyimportant because of our
stressed out brain.
It's telling us that things arein crisis mode.
The solution isn't to pushharder or try to do everything
at once.
The solution is to reality checkwhat's urgent versus what just
(02:06):
feels urgent.
Then create a bridge to actionthat works with your overwhelmed
brain instead of against it.
This framework guides my dailydecisions because it cuts
through the paralysis.
That stops so manyentrepreneurs.
The first thing is you need todo a complete brain dump before
you can take action.
You need to get everything outof your head and onto paper.
(02:27):
I'm talking about every task, every worry, every I probably
should do this.
That's been circling in yourmind.
Don't organize it yet.
Don't prioritize it yet.
Just dump it all out.
Your brain can't process actionsteps when it's trying to
remember 17 different things.
Next comes the urgency, reality.
(02:49):
Check for each item on yourlist, ask yourself.
What happens if this doesn't getdone today?
Who is actually waiting forthis?
What's the real deadline?
Most entrepreneurs are shockedto discover that maybe 10% of
their urgent list is actuallytime sensitive.
When you use the action bridgestrategy, instead of trying to
(03:09):
tackle the biggest, scariestitems, first you identify your
bridge actions, small steps thatcreate momentum and connection
between where you are and whereyou want to be.
Let me give you the specificcriteria for choosing your
bridge action when everythingfeels overwhelming.
Your bridge action should besomething you can complete in 15
(03:30):
to 30 minutes, something thatmoves you towards your bigger
goal and something that doesn'trequire additional decisions or
resources.
This works because it addresseswhy traditional productivity
advice fails, overwhelmedentrepreneurs.
Most advice tells you to justprioritize better or focus on
what's important.
But when you're in overwhelmmode, everything feels equally
(03:52):
important.
The reality check method worksbecause it addresses the root
cause, which is false urgency.
When you realize that most ofyour urgent tasks aren't
actually urgent, you createspace to think clearly and take
purposeful action.
So here is your immediate actionplan.
If you are feeling overwhelmedright now, set a timer for 10
(04:15):
minutes and write downeverything that feels urgent or
important.
Pick one item that you cancomplete in the next 30 minutes
and do that one thing.
Don't worry about whether it'sthe right thing or the most
important thing.
The goal is to bridge the gapbetween paralysis and momentum.
Here's what overwhelmentrepreneurs need to hear.
You don't need to have it allfigured out to take the next
(04:37):
step.
Action creates clarity and notthe other way around.
Every successful entrepreneurI've worked with has learned
this truth.
You bridge the overwhelm toaction gap with one small step
at a time when everything feelsoverwhelming.
Give yourself permission toreality check what's actually
urgent when everything feelsequally important.
(04:59):
Give yourself permission tostart with what feels possible.
You don't need to solveeverything at once.
You just need to prove to yourbrain that progress is possible.
The gap between knowing what todo and actually doing it isn't a
character flaw.
It's a normal response tocognitive overload that can be
solved with the right approach.
When you reality check yoururgency, you choose bridge
(05:21):
actions over perfect plans, andyou transform from someone who
knows what to do into someonewho actually does it.
This action taking system isexactly what I help
entrepreneurs develop through myreality check method in my
one-to-one coaching and myGrowth Collective Mastermind.
Because when you bridge the gapbetween paralysis and momentum,
(05:43):
everything is possible.
And remember, friends, you'vegot this.
