Rock bottom isn't the end but rather the place where you finally see clearly and can choose a new path. When we hit our lowest point with destructive habits, we gain a new perspective that allows us to break cycles of stress-induced behaviors and reconnect with our purpose.

• Quitting isn't failure but redirection when you're on a path that doesn't serve you
• Breaking cycles requires mindset shifts, not just discipline
• Hitting rock bottom in business taught me to pivot rather than panic
• The "brain dump" technique helps manage stress without turning to binging
• Breaking unhealthy patterns means delaying the immediate urge to escape stress
• Support from others who understand your struggles is crucial for lasting change

Speaker 1 (00:08):
Hey friends, welcome back to the Plus One Theory
podcast.
You're listening to the specialDelay the Binge series, where
we talk honestly about what ittakes to break the cycles that
keep us stuck.
Today I want to talk about rockbottom, not just with work or
relationships, but the rockbottom that comes when you keep

(00:32):
repeating the same habits thatare stealing your peace, your
joy and your health.
It's painful, it feels hopelessand sometimes you don't even
want to get back up becauseyou're thinking why do I keep
doing this?
Why can't I stop?

(00:52):
But here's the surprising thingabout rock bottom when you
finally stop, look up, the viewis different.
You can't see the path you weresupposed to take all along.
Why do we fight so long to stayon that path that's clearly not
working?
Because other people told usit's the right path for us and

(01:18):
also fear it whispers it's theonly path?
Or because we just confusequitting with failure, when
really it's just redirection.
And when it comes to our habitsfood, over-drinking,
overworking, pleasing everyonebut ourselves it's not just

(01:40):
about discipline, it's aboutmindset.
Just about discipline.
It's about mindset.
You can have all the tools, allthe education and all the
resources in the world, but ifyour mind is still fighting you.
You'll keep sliding back downthat mountain.
Let me tell you something thatjust happened in my life, a very

(02:02):
fresh rock-bottom moment.
I've been pouring all of myenergy into building the plus
one theory and delay the binge, and I let something else slide
my company, tpkk Concepts.
That's the business where Iconsult and plan events for

(02:22):
other businesses.
I love it so much, but it tooka backseat, and when you stop
tending to something, it doesn'tgrow Slowly.
I dwindled down to just threeclients, all owned by the same
person, by the way.
Well, yesterday I got the callthey were terminating, just like

(02:43):
that.
I had no clients left, nothingto literally feed me or my
family.
Now I still believe in my brandand I believe it will bear
fruit eventually, but it takestime, and time isn't on my side.
So I thought I need a job fast.

(03:03):
And let me be real, my firstthought was who on earth is
going to hire a 59 year old andmarketing and worse, how would I
fund all the moving parts thatI've already have in motion for
the coming months?
So I did what you do whenyou're desperate I started

(03:27):
looking up holiday jobs wrappinggifts, bagging, groceries,
anything, anything, anything, and it was defeating because I
also realized that if I wentthat route, I would have to
change or cancel the events thatI've committed to for my new

(03:49):
brand.
That's not what I've worked sohard for.
The fall happened.
I hit rock bottom, but then Ilooked up and when I did, the
was different.
I realized I had lost sight ofmy why?
Because isn't that what I tellmy clients all the time that
success isn't just aboutbuilding something for the sake

(04:11):
of it, it's about connecting toyour purpose.
I needed to practice what Ipreached.
So what did I do?
I pivoted, I reached out, I putmyself back into consulting and
you know what?
I signed a new client, maybeanother one's on the way.
Fingers crossed.
That will more than cover thebills and, best of all, I'll

(04:36):
still have the flexibility togrow the calling deep in my soul
.
That's the lesson.
Rock bottom isn't the end.
It's the place where youfinally see clearly.
Now, speaking of climbingmountains, let me tell you about
the one I'm climbing.
This weekend I'll be at theWaco Home for the Holidays

(04:59):
Christmas Market selling fromthe Piney Woods, and let me just
say prepping for this has beenlike a full-on Olympic sport.
I've been dragging dustyChristmas boxes out of the attic
in September, mind you, fighting with tangled lights
trying to figure out if half-litcounts as festive.

(05:22):
I swear if tinsel was a weaponI'd be a goner.
And let's just say I've inhaledenough fake snow to keep me
coughing carols until January.
But underneath the chaosthere's stress.
I've invested so much time andmoney preparing and honestly, I

(05:42):
don't know if I'll even breakeven.
Now.
Here's where the old me and thenew me split.
The old Pam, stressed about themarket, worried about the money
.
I would probably order a giantpizza and on my way to pick it

(06:03):
up I would stop by the H-E-Bgrocery store for a pint of
chocolate, chocolate chip,haagen-dazs, and then I would
eat it all.
And then I would curl up on thecouch and binge sad Netflix
movies.
Couch and binge sad Netflixmovies that make me cry, and

(06:25):
then I would go to bed.
That's my binge cycle.
It's not about the food or themovies.
It's about escaping the stress.
It's about numbing that stressinstead of facing it.
Now the new Pam that's usingdelay the binge.
I'm stressed out about themarket, worried about the money.
So I grab a notebook.
I dump every single thoughtthat's racing through my head.

(06:48):
There's a lot Onto paper, everysingle one, and then I circle
just one to focus on.
The others can wait, I pause.
That's what I call a brain dump.
It's simple, it's powerful andit works.

(07:10):
Y'all it does.
Try it.
You'll be shocked at the reliefit brings.
And then, instead of pizza, Ihead to the kitchen and cook a
healthy meal.
While it's baking, I take a walk, or or I sit in the infrared
sauna that my sweet son gave mefor Christmas, and then I shower
, feeling refreshed, and I eatand maybe even write a short

(07:36):
story about how I'm feeling.
I mean, y'all I write.
That's why I write.
It is therapy for me.
It is so satisfying to writesomething and share my story so
that someone maybe just oneperson you know might heal too

(07:57):
by listening and thinking of mystory and finding something
similar to it in their lives.
Do those things erase the stress?
No, but they give me space.
They delay the binge longenough to deal with what's
really going on.
And here's the key.
You won't master this in onetry.
None of us do.

(08:18):
It takes practice over and overand it takes support.
That's why the Delay, the BingeCollective, exists, because
someone else's story might bethe one that helps you find your
own pause.
So if you're listening todayand you feel like you're at the

(08:39):
bottom whether it's with yourhabits, your work or your
relationships I want you to hearthis you are not broken.
You're just being given achance to look up, see
differently and choose a newpath.
Rock bottom is not the end.
It's the place where the viewchanges.

(09:02):
And if you want support forthose habits that feel, and if

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
