Since it's Women's HistoryMonth, I want to highlight an
incredible Black woman youshould know about.
The late Octavia E Butler didn'tjust wake up one day and become
a legend.
She worked tirelessly.
Octavia worked tirelessly.
Octavia worked tirelessly, faced multiple rejections and

(00:54):
even took odd jobs to sustainher dream before becoming one of
the most celebrated sci-fiwriters of all time.
Her slow, intentional growthreminds us that success is an
instant.
It's built.
Read or watch Kindred or readParable of the Sower for

(01:18):
inspiration on persistence, especially during these trying
times.
So many creatives feel so muchpressure to succeed fast and
it's so unrealistic.
Sure, someone may go viral andgain fame from that, but the

(01:38):
reality is that won't happen tomost people.
That won't happen to mostpeople.
For most people, it takes yearsof consistency, grit and
conviction to your purposebefore quote-unquote success
takes off.
The truth is, most of thesuccess you see around you comes

(02:10):
from long-term effort.
What might look like overnightsuccess usually takes years of
hidden work.
So many creatives andentrepreneurs will talk about
consistency.
Some of the biggest creativesyou know in the world were
consistent with their craft foryears before they saw an ounce
of success.
Showing up regularly mattersmore than a viral moment.
As creatives, we have to learnto detach our self-worth from

(02:31):
speed, because fast isn't alwaysbetter and oftentimes, when we
do attach our self-worth tospeed, when things don't happen
for us as quickly as we want oras quickly as we desire, it can
negatively impact the way weview ourselves and our
self-worth and the gifts that weshare with the world.

(02:54):
Creatives know well that successcan be seasonal.
Not every moment is abreakthrough, and that is okay
is a breakthrough, and that isokay.
Trust me.
I know firsthand howfrustrating and disappointing it
can be to not have instantgratification with the effort

(03:17):
that we put in.
But I also know firsthand howrewarding and fulfilling it is
to see a dream come trueeventually, after having worked
on it and poured into it for solong and really tailored and
perfected our craft to the bestof our ability.
Because, in truth, many of usonly get better with time.

(03:42):
When I think back, there are somany episodes of this podcast
that honestly make me cringe, either because maybe the sound
quality was really off, or maybenot a lot of prep went into the
episode, or perhaps certainepisodes just don't feel like my
best work.
Now, having continued to do theshow after all of this time, I

(04:07):
only know that I'm growing andgetting better, and to me that
feels like success.
Navigating our relationship withsuccess is important as well,
and it can be very tricky.
When we say success, are wesaying success by our own
measure?
Are we saying success by ourown measure and standard, or are

(04:31):
we saying success based onsociety's view of success or
comparing ourselves to anotherperson's success?
Success can only be determinedby us and as experts in our own
unique crafts.
Only we know when we've donewell.
Only we know when we feel themost successful and, like many

(04:53):
things, sometimes motivationisn't enough.
When growth is slow, this iswhen discipline kicks in.
This is when staying the coursekicks in.
This is when recalling thevision that we have been granted
kicks in.
This is when understanding ourpurpose kicks in.

(05:14):
This is when we keep our eyeson the prize.
Remember the best things taketime.
Remember the best things taketime.
Use this time to perfect yourcraft.
Use this time to perfect yourcraft.
Use this time to grow yourskills.

(05:37):
Use this time to view rejectionas redirection.
Think about it for yourself.
Reflect on something you'veimproved.
Reflect on something thatyou've improved at over time.
How were you in the beginning, how are you today and where do
you hope to be in the future?
