So let's take a look at what's happening in the world of news.
Let's go down to San Mateo, CA where there is a report that a
suspect, it's been arrested for assault with a deadly weapon and
evading a police officer. Now this incident took place on
August the 6th. Yes, at 3:36 in the morning the
(01:47):
San Mateo Police Department received a report of a
suspicious vehicle and driver who was refusing to leave a
public or sorry, a private parking lot.
And that unit was on the block at Bobbitt Rd.
The driver identified as LilianaToffler Romero if and I probably
butchered that name, but regardless, she attempted to
(02:10):
pepper spray a security guard with but was unsuccessful.
Now Tola fellow Merrill, don't know I'm killing that name.
But she then began to drive awaybut returned to the parking lot
attempting to strike the security guard with her vehicle.
Now officers arrived and contacted her but she refused to
(02:30):
get out of her vehicle and instead she reversed her vehicle
and rammed a San Mateo Police patrol car.
No officers were injured during the collision in the patrol
vehicle sustained only minor injuries or sorry minor cabbage.
The lady then attempted to strike a security guard again
with her vehicle and for approximately 10 minutes
(02:52):
officers attempted to conduct a traffic stop over as she circled
the parking lot. A vehicle disabling device was
utilized to slow her down and after additional containment
efforts were utilized, she exited the vehicle and was
detained without further incident.
Now a top fall of Marrow was arrested for assault with a
(03:14):
deadly weapon and evading a peace officer.
She was booked into the San Mateo County Jail for her
charges. Liliana is a 30 year 31 year old
resident of San Bruno. Again the charges are assault
with a deadly weapon by three counts and eight counts of
evading a police officer. So the fun and excitement that
(03:35):
never ends in San Mateo, CA. Now as we take a look at other
news from the California region,we can say that yes, in Morgan
Hills, California. Approximately 10:23 PM on August
the 6th, again officers from theMorgan Hill Police Department
responded to a vehicle collisioninvolving A pedestrian near the
(03:58):
intersection of Cochrane Code and Madrone Pkwy.
Unfortunately, upon arrival, officers did locate a male
pedestrian in the eastbound lanes of Cochrane Rd. just West
of Midtown Pkwy. Despite immediate life saving
efforts by officers and emergency medical personnel, the
pedestrian tragically succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
(04:19):
Now it should be noted that the driver of the vehicle did remain
at the scene and also cooperatedfully with the investigation at
this time. Alcohol and drug impairment does
not appear to be a factor in thecollision.
The incident does remain, however, under investigation by
the Morgan Hill Police Department's Traffic Unit.
(04:40):
And if you have witnessed anything in relation to that
case or anything else in the region, you're welcome to
contact the traffic officer, Rosendo Morales at 669-253-4980
and at the release. And information was brought out
by Sergeant John Coughlin of theTraffic Unit at the Morgan Hill
(05:03):
Police Department. Once again, they also have sent
out their thoughts to the familyand loved ones of the victim
during this difficult time. So again, our thoughts are also
with those individuals and the family members.
Now, let's take a little jump over to Newark, CA Yes, the
Newark Police Department is saying that they have received
(05:27):
reports of individuals posing aslandscapers or utility workers,
often wearing high visibility vests, knocking on doors and
when they are then answered, they are committing a
residential burglaries. In some cases, the suspects have
been seen driving a moving company truck and are active at
various times of the day. Now, tips to protect yourself
(05:48):
and your neighborhood from the Police Department.
They all want everybody to stay vigilant of course, and they say
don't open the door to strangers, but make sure you
know, make sure that they know that someone is home by speaking
through the door. If you are away, make sure that
you monitor your security cameras and check alerts
(06:08):
promptly. The Newark Police Department
also offers a vacation home check.
So if you're going on vacation and holidays, by all means
consider signing up by visiting their website at
www.newarkca.gov/departments/please/protectdash yourself and one more
(06:29):
forward slash vacation dash, house dash, dash check.
But again, just contact the Newark Police Department.
They will be able to give you all the information and help you
through the process. They also add to the points of
security to make sure that you lock all of your doors and
windows before leaving or if you're just going to bed, make
sure that your house is locked up as well.
(06:49):
Verify with utility companies ifsomeone claims to be
representing them. If someone comes to your door
and is claiming to represent theutility company, by all means
have them wait outside. Make sure your door is still
locked, and then call the utility company to verify their
identity. Look them up on Google or from
(07:10):
your utility bills. Do not use a phone number
provided by the individual at the door as they could be giving
you the wrong number and have someone answering those calls to
give a false verification. They also state that starting a
neighborhood crime watch crime watch group to strengthen safety
and community or safety in your community through communication
(07:32):
is also great. And don't forget that if you do
suspect or see suspicious activity reported immediately to
the Newark Police Department, they can be reached of course
emergencies 911 or through non-emergency line for the New
York PD at area code 510-578-4237.
(07:53):
And they add to that. Just stay vigilant once again.
Now as we turn to look at, of course, the Daly City police
again in California, there are many different things going on.
But of course the robbery is something that people are seeing
in this type in specifically at a lot of supermarkets and other
(08:18):
locations where they are using self checkout facilities.
Now on Wednesday approximately 2:47 PM, officers were
dispatched to the Lucky Supermarket at the 6800 block of
Mission Street on report of a robbery and manager stated that
the suspect paid only for a bag of chips at the self checkout
and left without paying for the rest of the merchandise.
(08:40):
Approximately 5 to 10 minutes later, the suspect returned,
paid only for one of two cans ofchili and again left the store
without paying for all of the items.
The manager followed the suspectout of the parking lot where the
suspect entered a passenger seatof a vehicle and pointed A
firearm out the window towards the sky as the vehicle drove
away. Now on the 8th, sorry, just
(09:05):
looking at that, sorry. The suspect, a 48 year old Jolly
City resident was arrested and booked into jail for robbery,
possession of brass knuckles andan outstanding warrant.
So again, it's important to understand that as you use the
self checkout. There have also been indications
from various regions that people, it is common for people
(09:27):
to mistakenly miss an item in a shopping cart.
But again, it's also a growing concern for the retail chains
that people are intentionally doing this as well.
So again, it creates a loss within the store in the
business. And that that in fact turns
around and gets passed on to theconsumers because it becomes a
(09:49):
part of doing business and the cost pushing the prices up for
everyone that uses that supermarket and actually pays
for their items. So again, use diligence.
Make sure that you're all of your items scan at the grocery
store as it can be quite embarrassing if accidentally you
get stopped, you've accidentallyforgot this scan something or it
(10:10):
didn't scan properly and you getstopped leaving the store.
So again, just be careful and avoid the embarrassment but also
it helps to keep the prices downat the till now other thing that
was going on is Crunch Fitness. Yes, a burglar was finding more
than just improved health or maybe not even improved health
(10:31):
at the location of Crunch Fitness at the Serramonte
Centre. The suspect actually went into
the facility between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM and a stole several
items from various gym patrons and these items that were either
in lockers or otherwise just in the changing areas.
(10:52):
But it appears that at this point, all of these particular
thefts happened out of the lockers.
Now what was taken while the first case, the in the
individual stole a driver's license, a military ID, various
debit and credit cards, $800 cash and other miscellaneous
cards taken up from his gym locker.
(11:13):
Once again that was at Crunch Fitness and the suspect
attempted to use two of the cards, but the transactions were
declined. 4 suspects were detained in the investigation is
ongoing. So they had a crew working on
it. Now on the same day at the same
location between 12:00. Yemen, 12:58 PM, victim had his
(11:34):
wallet containing a California driver's license and debit card
and a credit card as well as $120.00 cash and other
miscellaneous items from a gym locker at the same Crunch
Fitness location at Serramonte Centre.
Now the suspects used the victim's debit and credit cards
to make fraudulent purchases. Once again, it is linked to the
(11:54):
same for suspects who were detained and on the same day.
Once again between 12:35, 1:00 PM, a victim had his keys and a
credit card holder or a card holder containing a California
drivers license, two credit cards and a debit card taken
from the gym locker at the same Crunch Fitness and the credit
card was used to make a fraudulent purchase.
(12:17):
The suspect attempted to use other credit card and debit
cards, but the transactions weredeclined.
So once again, just remember if you are going to a gym facility
or somewhere where you are goingto be separated from your
wallet, it is better to maybe leave it hidden in your vehicle
as opposed to taking it into thelocation with you.
(12:39):
Just take out your membership card if that's needed and leave
the rest of your wallet either at home or secured somewhere
hidden in your vehicle. Also keep in mind that if you do
leave your wallet at home, you will want to have your drivers
license with you because of the fact that of course you don't
want to get pulled over in a traffic stop or a traffic check
(13:00):
and not have your license with you.
So again, make sure that you give it that a little bit of
thought as you head out the doorto head to the gym.
You want to at least reduce, excuse me, reduce the risk of
loss there as well as said not being, you know, going through
the hassles of having to replacecards, report them stolen, block
(13:21):
them and and to replace ID. We know it can be a pain in the
ass as well, so let's move on there, folks.
Let's take a look at the Trump is looking to nominate the White
House economist to the Fed board.
Yes, Donald Trump said Thursday that he's at nominating Stephen
Mirren, chair of the White HouseCouncil of Economic Advisers, to
(13:43):
serve as temporary member of theFederal Reserve Board.
This of course, is filling a vacancy created by the departure
of Governor Adriana Kugler. And she has decided to return to
the to the field of instruction or teaching.
So as again the GOP controlled Senate prepares to consider
(14:06):
several key financial appointments and as the
administration eyes also a long term shift in leadership at the
central bank, the question is ofcourse with Trump making new
appointments, is it going to change the way that the Fed
Reserve operates and is it goingto give him an unfair influence
(14:27):
within the policies and setting of rates and so forth?
We know that the Federal Reserveis supposed to act autonomously
from governments. It's supposed to be at arms
length and not have influence bya government officials.
However, of course, this is a new era when it comes to Trump
and his ignorance of laws, regulations and policies, as
(14:50):
well as historical benchmarks. Now, Trump has gone on to say
that he has been with me from the beginning of my second term
and his expertise in the world of economics is unparalleled.
He will do an outstanding job. Congratulations, Steven.
That was in part what Trump wrote about it.
Now, Mirren serves as a chair ofthe White House Council of
(15:12):
Economic Advisers, a position hehas held since being confirmed
along party lines earlier in Trump's second term.
He previously advised Treasury Secretary Steven Steven Miniten,
or Matchin, during Trump's firstterm.
Moran earned his doctorate in economics from Harvard
University and focused on issuescentral to Trump's economic
(15:34):
agenda, including a November paper examining the link between
tariffs and the value of the US dollar, which gained traction
among senior White House officials.
If confirmed, Moran will fill the seat vacated by Kugler, who
will step down on Friday. The Federal Reserve announced
August 1st that Cougar submittedA resignation to Trump effective
August 8th. She has served as a Fed governor
(15:57):
since September the 20 since September 2023 and will return
to Georgetown University as a professor this fall.
Now Google's term was set to expire January the 31st 2026 and
Marines appointment would cover the remaining of her term,
allowing Trump more time to select a nominee for the full 14
(16:19):
year term, which is said to begin early next year.
Senate confirmation will be required for the full term
appointment, but not for the temporary now.
The timing of Moran's confirmation could also
influence Trump's eventual choice to replace the Federal
Reserve chair, Jerome Powell, whose term ends in May.
Powell, first appointed in 2018,has faced criticism from
(16:41):
conservatives over the central banks interest rate policy and
its role in broader economic matters.
Trump's nomination of a close economic ally to the Fed could
strengthen his influence over monetary policy in the final
stretch of Powell's leadership and set the stage for a reshaped
central bank in line with the administration's priorities.
(17:03):
Again, the priorities seem to becorruption and undue influence
where they shouldn't be. And as we talk about the
administration, of course, what would the discussion be without
an update on certain things happening within ICE, Homeland
Security and other departments? So let's take a look at another
(17:26):
announcement that the Immigration and Customs
Enforcement will open another large scale detention facility
at Fort Bliss in Texas on Augustthe 17th, which is part of
President Donald Trump's push tocarry out what officials called
the largest deportation effort in that U.S. history.
Now, ICE is preparing to begin operations at the new detention
(17:48):
facility in the Fort Bliss military base near El Paso, TX
later this month. The site will initially house
1000 individuals who entered theUnited States illegally, with
plans to expand to over 5000 beds over the next two years,
according to the Department of Defence.
Now, the Pentagon press secretary has also spoken out
(18:11):
and that's Kingsley Wilson describing the project as a
historic level in scale. Now of course, with that said,
upon completion, this will be the largest federal detention
centre in history for this critical mission, the
deportation of illegal aliens, Wilson said on Thursday.
Now let's not forget that a lot of the, the as so-called illegal
(18:36):
detentions and illegal aliens, the actions by the US government
alone are illegal. So again, we'll watch how that
days out, but the detention campis going to be known as Camp E
Montana and is being built undera Department of Defence contract
valued up to $1.2 billion, according to a border report.
(18:57):
Now, once operational, the contractor will add capacity in
phases, increasing by 250 beds per week until the facility
reaches 3000 beds, with further plans to expand afterwards.
Now, ICE will manage and operatethe site, providing detainees
access to legal representation, a law library and recreational
(19:18):
spaces, officials said. But again, we know that there
has been a lot of denial in terms of the right and the
access to legal representation at other facilities.
So it really makes me question whether or not they will
actually get legal representation or simply access
to a law library that, of course, Donald Trump will
(19:40):
probably have because people pick out what books are allowed
and which are not. Now, the announcement comes as
Trump administration faces a series of legal challenges to
its immigration policies. And on that same day, of course,
a federal judge in Florida temporarily halted construction
of another detention site known as Alligator Alcatraz that's
(20:01):
located in the Everglades. U.S.
District Judge Kathleen Williamsruled the project had not
complied with federal environmental laws.
Immigration advocates hailed thedecision, pointing to what they
allege are inhumane conditions at similar facilities.
Now, despite opposition, the administration continues to
(20:21):
expand detention capacity. Now, Homeland Security Secretary
Christie Noem announced a new facility in Miami County,
Indiana, already nicknamed the Speedway Slammer.
The site, located approximately 75 miles from Indianapolis and
the renowned Indiana Speedway, will add 1000 detention beds
(20:44):
through a state partnership. She went on to state that if you
are in America illegally, you could find yourself in Indiana's
Speedway Slammer. Noem said.
Comparing it to the Everglades facility, she said the
partnership would help remove the worst of the worst out of
our country. Now, let's also keep in mind
that they seem to be coming up with these sweet little
(21:07):
marketing slogans and names suchas the Speedway Slammer and the
Alligator Alcatraz, and they're actually trying to sell
merchandise. It really shows the priority of
this Trump administration and his lackeys that are running
different departments. It is not a joke.
It is not a marketing slogan. It is the fact that they are
(21:30):
detaining people in inhumane conditions.
They are making a mockery of thewhole process, of the proper due
process, allowed or afforded it to illegals or anyone else in
the United States, whether they are citizens, residents or not.
Now, as I stated, they are trying to make a mockery and a
(21:53):
marketing edge out of these facilities.
When you look at a lot of the detention facilities that are
being operated right now for ICEas well as private prisons
throughout the United States, we've seen where corporate greed
gets their fingers in there. And really, it is not the
conditions that they are supposed to be held up to via
(22:15):
current laws, regulations, restrictions and policies.
And that is a very big concern. How many of the corporate
entities are linked to Donald J Trump or his other members of
the Trump administration in terms of investors, in terms of
stockholders and and so forth? I mean, it's just something that
(22:36):
has gotten way out of control. And we know that these private
corporations are making a killing out of the detention of
illegal immigrants or the illegal detention of residents,
permanent residents, temporary residents and illegal aliens all
around that have not committed violent crimes as Trump accuses
(22:57):
them. Now.
The Department of Homeland Security promoted the project on
a social media. Digitally imaged, sorry,
digitally altered image of an IndyCar style race and a race
car bearing the ICE logo shown speeding past a barbed wire
wall. Administration officials called
the Indiana Centre the next Alligator Alcatraz, underscoring
(23:20):
their commitment to expanding detention capacity nationwide.
And again, the the catchy littlenames there are nothing more
than a distraction and really distracting from the reality of
these facilities and the illegalimmigration policies that Trump
has brought in. Now with Fort Bliss set to
(23:41):
become the largest federal immigration detention site in
history, the Trump administration strategy signals
an aggressive continuation of its immigration enforcement
agenda even as opponents now legal and political resistance.
So again, just a real disgustingmess in terms of what Trump is
doing, what ICE is doing, what Homeland Security and so forth.
(24:05):
And let's go into that a bit further in terms of the in terms
of the Indiana ICE detention centre.
Now, this has brought up a big concern not only from certain
political circles that also in the world of IP or intellectual
property supporters, But IndyCaritself says it was unaware of
(24:28):
the Department of Homeland Security's use of AI generated
image featuring ICE branding. Now, IndyCar said they're not
aware of it. They had no idea ahead of time
of any plan to release an AI generated image of an IndyCar
featuring US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency
branding or ICE. And the image was shared
(24:49):
multiple times on the Departmentof Homeland Security social
media platforms on Tuesday afterthe department's announcement of
a new immigration detention centre.
And again, that's 40 miles northof the iconic Indianapolis Motor
Speedway, home of the Indianapolis 500.
Now, in a statement that was sent to ABC News, the racing
authority said that consistent with our approach to public
(25:11):
policy and political issues, we are communicating our preference
that our IP not be utilized moving forward in relation to
this matter. Department of Homeland Security
denied that the image violates anyone's intellectual property
rights in its response to the IndyCar statement.
(25:31):
Any suggestion to the contrary is absurd, it said in the
statement sent to ABC News. DHS will continue promoting the
Speedway Slammer as a comprehensive and collaborative
approach to combating illegal immigration.
I, for one, as a copyright holder on many, many levels and
(25:51):
disgusted that they don't seem to have any respect for the
intellectual property and copyrights of any company,
individual or otherwise. Now the image that was shared
across their social media accounts shows the car sporting
a #5. That's the same number used by a
Mexican driver Paddle award of McLaren.
(26:12):
Neither award nor McLaren have commented back to ABC.
But we've been watching it to see how that goes.
Because again, I think it's a racist and almost subliminal
reference to a Mexican race car superstar, now nicknamed the
Speedway Slammer, that by DHS Secretary Christy Noem.
(26:34):
That planned Indiana detention centre would house 1000 beds and
be part of the administration's broader push to remove the worst
of the worst, as we already covered now on Fox and Friends.
On Wednesday, Noam teased that more centres would be announced
soon, modeled after Florida's Alligator Alcatraz, which opened
earlier this year. And again, as I stated earlier,
(26:56):
is the subject of lawsuits and controversy.
Now, we will bring you updates as that story progresses over
the coming days, weeks or months.
Now, let's take a look at a another story that is coming out
of Florida. Yes, a nurse has been arrested.
(27:16):
She has been impersonating, impersonating a nurse just mind
blowing that she has reportedly treated over 4000 patients, yes,
4000 patients and she is not a real nurse.
She's impersonating 1. And this is a major concern.
(27:38):
And again, it happened in the Florida where she is now facing
charges. Now looking at this a bit
further now the patients of course were treated without her
holding a license and that the sheriff has reported this,
including the fact that she has now been arrested in Flagler
County. Now, Autumn Paradisa, 29 years
(28:00):
old, was arrested on Tuesday after pretending to be a
registered nurse and treating 4486 individuals at a local
hospital from July 2023 until she was fired on January 22nd.
The Sheriff's Office announced this information in a press
release on Wednesday. Now, they went on to state the
(28:22):
in terms of that release, Sheriff Rick Stanley said that
this is one of the most disturbing cases of medical
fraud that we've ever investigated.
And you can see on your screen, of course, at the individual
accused. Once again, her name is.
Sorry about that, I just lost myplace there again.
(28:47):
Her name is Autumn Barisa, she's29 years old and again treated
over 4000 patients now. Back in July of 2023, Burdisso
was hired as an Advanced Nurse technician.
She was working under the supervision of a registered
nurse, official said when she applied for the position.
She stated that she was an Educated Education First
(29:08):
registered nurse, meaning she passed the required schooling to
become a registered nurse, but had not passed the national exam
to obtain her license. She then told the hospital she
had passed her exams and provided a license number
matching an individual with her first name, Autumn, but with a
different last name. The Sheriff's Office reported
(29:29):
this and Bernice explained the discrepancy, saying that she had
recently got married and had a new last name, according to
officials. Now the hospital requested to
see her marriage license to confirm my identity, but she
never provided it to them, officials said.
When Marissa was offered a promotion in January, officials
said a fellow employee doctor license status and discovered
(29:49):
that she had an expired certified nursing assistant
license and immediately reportedthe findings to hospital
administrators. After the hospital investigated,
they learned that Marissa had also never provided her marriage
license per their previous requests.
After terminating her on Januarythe 22nd, hospital officials
(30:10):
contacted the Sheriff's Office, which then began an
investigation. Officials failed that the nurse
produces stole the license of from is someone at a different
hospital and attended school with.
Bernie said with the 2 did not personally know one another on
Tuesday, but he said was arrested for seven council
practicing healthcare professionwithout a license and seven
(30:32):
counts of fraudulent use of personal identification.
Officials said she was transported to the Sheriff Perry
Hall Inmate Detention Facility where she's being held on a
$70,000 bond and that was a per the officials in the matter.
Now, this incident comes after aPennsylvania nurse was arrested
(30:53):
in July after using 20 aliases, including the identities and
credentials of 4 confirmed nurses from southern States and
seven different Social Security numbers.
Another similar incident occurred back in November 2024
when a 44 year old woman impersonating impersonated
registered nurse at a hospital in Burbank, CA.
(31:14):
Jail records do not indicate Barney's next court appearance
and it is not immediately clear whether she has an attorney who
can speak on her behalf. But again, we'll be watching
this story intently and bring you updates as they arise.
Now, let's take a look at some news closer to home here in
(31:34):
Canada. Yes, there are many things that
are happening across the country.
And one of the things, of course, is the debt that's take
a focus in on British Columbia, for example, BC's debt is
skyrocketed in the two years of David's government.
Vaughn Palmer, who is a political analyst and very well
(31:56):
respected in this market, that media coverage, said that Ebbie
inherited a debt of 89 billion The year he took over from John
Horgan. That debt has soared to 133
billion. Yes, it is up $44 billion or
49.4% now. Finance been Finance Minister
(32:18):
Brenda Bailey released BC PublicAccounts Thursday, confirming
that Premier David Eby had increased the provincial debt by
almost 50% in his first two years in office.
EB inherited a provincial debt, as I said, of 89 billion the
year he took over from John Horgan.
But as of the end of his second a full years premier, the debt
had soared to 133 billion. As I said earlier, $44 billion
(32:42):
increase or 49.4%. The finance minister tried to
redirect attention away from thedebt, pointing out that the
operating deficit for the 2425 fiscal year was smaller than
forecasted when the budget was introduced in February of 2024.
Now, unfortunately, that is justa distraction because this $7.3
(33:04):
billion deficit was neverthelessa record, exceeding the previous
high of 5.6 billion set during the financially troubled year of
the COVID pandemic. Now, the reporter here from the
Vancouver Sun went on to ask Bailey how she could justify
such an extraordinary increase in the debt in such a short
period. She fell back on a series of
(33:26):
excuses, stating that the challenge posed by U.S.
President Donald Trump and his tariffs.
But again, let's remember that Trump was only presiding for 10
weeks when BC closed the books on the 2024-2025 financial year
on March 31st. That was obviously too soon for
the threatened tariffs to have had an impact on the provincial
(33:46):
bottom line. She also looked at and cited
economic challenges besetting BCand every other part of the
globe. And yes, OK for that, I would
say that there have been a lot of challenges over the last
year, over the last several years in terms of global
economics and international trade as well as other areas.
(34:08):
But in terms of John Horgan alsofaced no small challenge through
the pandemic. I mean, it is really to look at
that. And he managed to get the the
budget back into balance, leaving behind a $6 billion
surplus, which Ebbie promptly spent.
So now as this goes on, the furtherance of the statement by
(34:30):
Bailey was suggesting that a lotof the debt went to Building
Schools, hospitals, roads, bridges and transit lines, as
well as other capital infrastructure.
Now, the public accounts told a different story.
The New Democrats projected a $14 billion capital plan for
building infrastructure, but they spent only 10.4 billion.
The debt went in the other direction, up 10 billion more
(34:53):
than what was forecast at the beginning of the year.
How is it possible to borrow andspend less on infrastructure and
end up with more of a debt? That is a big question to be
answered. Now if we look at the answer on
the operating side, if that was the case, that part of the debt
that is borrowed to cover the gap between government revenues
(35:14):
and program spending, the directoperating debt soared to a 24.5
billion in EB second year, up from zero the year he took
office as premier. So again, another real concern.
Now, again in this article, theywent on to say that in short, to
borrow a metaphor used by finance ministers over the
(35:37):
years, more than half of EB's $44 billion addition to the debt
load went to pay for groceries as opposed to schools, hospitals
or other infrastructure. And that's just a statement or a
saying. Now you could also see that in
the breakdown of the $3.5 billion contingency fund that
was included in the budget. Now contingencies are set aside
(35:58):
to cover emergencies and other unexpected expenses, but the ECB
government has taken to spendingthem for every purpose
imaginable. This year's contingency fund
included $262,000,000 to pay increases for public sector
workers, 300 million for a Translink bailout, 50 million
for a future ready job training program and almost 9,000,000 for
(36:21):
the governments already well funded communications office.
The Ministry of the Attorney General.
About a $61 million budget top up to cover such things as
operating costs for the courts and the judiciary.
Public Safety got an additional 65,000,000 for corrections and
policing services, while Citizenservices got an additional 54
(36:42):
billion for information technology, enterprise services
and contracts. So again, when it comes to law
enforcement and our judicial system, of course, we need to
make sure that they are well funded, but we also have to make
sure that money is well managed. You know, well managed
ministries that would have prevented these anticipated
costs and, you know, looked at covered them, covering them out
(37:06):
of their annual budgets by setting priorities and
reallocating funds. But you don't need to spend much
time with financial statements to realize the managing that
managing spending is a foreign notion for the EB government.
Now, by boosting the budget for contingencies, the premier
escaped scrutiny by the legislature until the money is
spent and long gone. Unlike ministry budgets, that
(37:30):
contingency fund is not debatable in advance because the
government has not yet decided how to spend it.
In the first budget introduced by Horgan's Finance minister
Carol James, there was a $550 million layout for contingencies
over this year, and the next twoEB is budgeted 12 billion in
unallocated funds. Now that really sounds like a
(37:53):
job for the Auditor General examining this level of
unallocated and undisciplined spending and reporting on any
abuses because it appears that it's getting out of control to
put money into these contingencyfunds and actually have ulterior
motives for that and alter alternate spending plans.
(38:14):
So again, it's a way to get around a lot of pre debate on
the spending before it happens and instead having to answer for
it afterwards. And it brings back memories of
the old saying that it's easier to beg for forgiveness and to
ask for permission. That seems to be the theory that
they are going with. Now.
(38:34):
We will also look at this as we go forward.
We'll take a look closer at the different budget shortfalls in
different parts of the country. We know that it is going to be a
tough time and a lot of challenges that need to be met
going forward. But we will definitely keep our
eyes on that and make sure that we keep you updated Now as we
(38:59):
talk while budgets and and money, of course, we are looking
at other areas that are going inthe wrong direction as well.
Yes, more BC adults and childrenare going to food banks are
going to places such as the Union Gospel Mission for food
hampers. And it has been a really tough
(39:19):
time and the numbers are really showing that.
Now when we talk about this, thenumbers have grown just
astronomically. The Union Gospel Mission, for
example, gave out 150 food hampers per month to low income
families in 2020. This year that number has grown
(39:40):
to 680 due to the staggering need.
But food insecurity is a problemeverywhere, across the province,
across the country and throughout North America.
We also see a problems when it comes to USD organizations and
individuals where they've cut back on the US programs,
(40:00):
including the food security known as food stamps.
Now, yes, there is a need for, as I said, responsible
government spending, responsiblegovernment oversight, but it
just doesn't seem to be happening.
We also need to ensure that we are supporting those in our
societies at most at risk of going hungry, of going without,
(40:22):
with not being able to meet the current budgetary demands.
Of increased utilities, rental costs, home ownership, all of
these things are really getting way, way past the reach of the
average family, let alone those on very restricted budgets so we
need to make sure that we keep that in mind and find new and
(40:44):
innovative ways to help those inneed.
In the meantime though, folks, don't forget that you can reach
out to your local food banks if you have the ability and the
resources. Of course, the food banks are
always the need and this is a growing concern in all
communities. So by all means, just Google
your local food bank and make a small contribution.
(41:05):
They all add up to help where itis most needed.
As a supporter of the Surrey Food Bank here in Surrey, BC, I
know that it's very rewarding tobe able to give back to the
community around you and to helpthose in need.
So once again, if you have the ability and the resources where
you are able to do so, encourageyou to make a contribution to
(41:30):
your local food bank. If you are in need, and really
so many people are, please don'tbe ashamed.
Don't be shy, don't be embarrassed to reach out to your
local food bank or other community groups.
That is why they are there. They are there to help you in
times of need. So again, don't be feeling
embarrassed or shy. You know, you may have worked
(41:51):
your whole life and never depended on anybody for
anything, but it happens and it is a lot more common than you
think. You're not alone in this in this
tough economy. So again, if you need the
resources and the help, don't beshy.
Just reach out to your local food bank.
They're amazing people who do amazing things in the community
(42:11):
and other organizations that canhelp you as well.
So please, you know, just make sure that you use them.
That's what they're there for. And that's why people, including
myself, who have the ability to help, contribute to them, to
help anybody in need, no questions asked.
Now, let's take a look at another implication of change
(42:34):
when it comes to the US Canada border.
Yes, some Canadian permanent residents will have to post a
$15,000 visa bond to enter the US.
Now, here is some of the information that you may need to
know. Now, of course, visitors are
required to pay the bond when they apply for a visa and that
money is reportedly going to be refunded once they return to
(42:58):
their home country. Whether or not it will be and
what the refund process looks like is another story.
It can be very challenging to get the actual facts and truth
out of a Trump administration. So again, use caution.
Be careful when you are paying these insane numbers.
(43:19):
Now, in terms of vacation or other, this particular amount is
looking at the Canadian permanent residents that'll have
to post that bond. But again, visa bonds are
becoming a thing in the US and some of them will be $150.00
for, you know, vacationing or such and different levels,
(43:40):
different costs. So again, be aware that if you
are planning to cross the borderinto the US, of these new
policies coming into play when it comes to these visa bonds as
they're so-called and whether ornot you realistically will get
them back, That's another question there.
Now, in Quebec, yes, a judge whoreduced the sentence or gave a
(44:04):
reduced sentence to a man due tohis race, yes, a black man was
given a sentence that was reduced because of the fact that
he was black. Now that is really a question of
morality. It's a question of reverse
racism and it is a question of sending the wrong message.
(44:26):
If you look at the totality of the Canadian criminal justice
system, justice is supposed to be blind.
It's not supposed to be, you know, just blind in certain and
selective cases, but in all cases.
And we should be looking at the sentencing guidelines and making
sure that they apply to everyoneequally across the board.
(44:46):
They shouldn't be reducing sentences based on your race,
based on your gender, based on your personal identification.
It should be a similar sentencing guideline across the
board. We can look at other areas where
there is the Gladu reports that are done not for for Indigenous
(45:07):
and that is something totally separate in terms of the way
that they are governed and giventhe the powers within Canada.
So we don't want to mix the two. This is a totally different
instance where the individual has been given a lighter
sentence just strictly based on the colour of his skin.
And that should be, that should not be the case.
(45:30):
That should not be the way that we set precedent in Canadian
legal statutes and the Canadian legal process.
If you are going to be convicted, if you're going to do
a crime to charged and be convicted, then it should be an
equal sentencing boundary and parameter across the board, but
not based on race, religion or anything else.
(45:52):
Now, as I said, that is completely, totally separate and
away from what is known as the Gladu reports.
So again, that is a, you know, like comparing apples to
oranges. Well, we won't get into that
today, but we do support the Gladu report process and that
program for the most part and it's totality, but there are of
(46:15):
course questions about that as well and challenges that need to
be brought up. But overall, I think that that
is a good program, but this one here is completely separate.
And apart from that, just basically reducing a sentence
because Amen is black is not acceptable, just as it would not
be acceptable to increase his sentence because he's black.
It should be the transparent andyou know, open parity for
(46:40):
everyone in the system. So that is again, we are here at
Propex TV in Vancouver, BC. That is our live chat for
