How's it going, everybody? Clint Armitage with the Radio Coffee House.
Thanks for coming back and thanks for listening in.
Another great show for you today. Today we're gonna be talking about the
(00:22):
mama mentality. And if you know anything about Kobe
Bryant, you'll know what I'm talking about. His mindset, his
training, and the experience that he
had in creating this Mamba
mentality. But I'm going to add to it because
I think we need to also have God
included in this. And that's why this episode is called
God's Mamba Mentality, because there is some wisdom
(00:44):
that Kobe brings, but it doesn't include
God. And if we include God in the plans, in
our mentality, in our mindset, it changes the
game. Now, on an earthly level, on a
human level, KBE hit the pinnacle, right?
But on a godly level, on the spiritual
plane, God can take us to a totally
different level and bring us to heights we don't
(01:07):
even understand. Because God is so
big that his plans for us are way
above our plans. Isaiah 55 says his
thoughts are higher than our thoughts.
And that's what we have to add to this humanly
wisdom plane is God's
Mamba mentality. And this is from the School
of Greatness podcast. If you want to listen to the whole
(01:29):
interview, go ahead and click the link in the description.
Otherwise we're gonna break down Kobe's Mamba
mentality. How he goes from a 10 year old that
can't hit one shot to a 14 year
old that is now the best in the state.
Let's do this.
>> Speaker B (01:49):
Who was more influential for you, your father or
mother?
>> Speaker C (01:53):
Both were influential at different points. Yeah,
right. Uh, my mom was there on a daily
basis. My father
was uh, really influential at a really critical time. Where
I had a summer where I played basketball when I was like 10 or 11
years old and a very prominent summer league in
Philadelphia called the Sunny Hill League where my father played, my uncle played
(02:13):
and they were like all time greats and such stuff. And both
Chamberlain played in the league, you know, ear the Prommanro
played in the league and ah, here I come
playing and I don't score one point the entire
summer. Really? Not one.
>> Speaker B (02:27):
How old were you?
>> Speaker C (02:28):
11. 10. 11.
>> Speaker B (02:29):
And you're playing against other 10, 11 year olds or and you to score once?
>> Speaker C (02:32):
Not one.
>> Speaker B (02:32):
Were you in the game?
>> Speaker C (02:33):
I was in the game.
>> Speaker B (02:34):
How did you not score?
>> Speaker C (02:35):
Because I was terrible.
>> Speaker B (02:36):
Really?
>> Speaker C (02:37):
Yeah.
>> Speaker B (02:38):
That 10, 11 years old, you were that awful?
>> Speaker C (02:40):
I mean, I, you know, and I had these big knee pads on because I was
growing really fast. I have socks all the way up here. And I had
like the pie top, skinny, uh, like
skinny as hell. And I scored. Not a free
throw, not a nothing, not a lucky shot, not a breakaway
layup, zero points. And I remember crying about it,
being upset about it. And my father just gave me a hug and said, listen,
(03:00):
whether you score zero, score 60,
I'mnna love you no matter what. Wow. Now that is
the most important thing that you can say to a
child. Because from there I was like, okay,
that gives me all the confidence in the world to fail. I, uh, have
the security there, but the hell with that.
I'm scoring 60. Let's go. Right, right, right. And from there
I just went to work. I just stayed with it. I kept practicing.
(03:23):
Kept practic and kept practice.
>> Speaker B (03:25):
Is that when you think the mentality of hard work started
to come in for you at that age? When you failed
so miserably?
>> Speaker C (03:31):
I guess that'summer, I think that's when the idea of
understanding a long term view became
important. Because I wasn't going to catch these kids in
a week. I wasn'tnna catch them in a year. Right. So that's when
I sat down and said, okay, this is gonna take some thought.
All right, What I want to work on first. All right, Shooting.
All right, let's knock this out. Let's focus on this. Half a year, six
(03:51):
months, do nothing but shoot right after that. All right,
Creating your own shot. Then you focus. So you start. I started creating a
menu of things. When I came back the next summer, I was a little bit
better, Right.
>> Speaker B (04:01):
And menu being like, I've got my jump shot from 15, I've got my.
>> Speaker C (04:04):
Yeah, I got my jump shot from 15, I got my three point shot. Like
just open shots, not miss open shots. Right.
Be able to shoot it with speed because those kids are so much more athletic.
>> Speaker B (04:13):
Yeah.
>> Speaker C (04:14):
And then the next time I came back was a little better. And the summer came back,
you was a little better. I scored. Yeah, it wasn't much,
but I scored. This is 12, 13, 12, 13.
Then 14 came around back half of 13,
14, uh, years old. And then I was just
killing everyone. And it happened in two years. And I
wasn't expecting it to happen in two years, but it did. Because what I
(04:34):
had to do was work on the basics and the fundamentals.
Well, they relied on athleticism and their
natural Ability. And because I stick to the
fundamentals, it just caught up to them. And then my
body, you know, my knees stopped hurting. I grew into my
frame.
>> Speaker B (04:49):
And then your athleticism, once you have the
fundamentals, the hard work, the mindset,
and you tack on the athletic miss.
>> Speaker C (04:57):
Then it was gameable.
>> Speaker B (04:58):
Wow. So from 13,
your good average still?
>> Speaker C (05:03):
I was good. I was good about, about like the end of
my third, like right when I was turning 14, I became the best
player in the state.
>> Speaker B (05:10):
At 14.
>> Speaker C (05:11):
At 14.
>> Speaker B (05:11):
So from 12 to 14, you went from scoring zero to being the
best in the state of all ages.
>> Speaker C (05:16):
Yep. But it's simple. Like if you do the math on this, right?
Like if you're thinking about how often kids are playing.
>> Clint Armitage (05:22):
Mhm.
>> Speaker C (05:23):
Right. I tell this to my daughter and my daughter's team as well that I
coach. It's a simple thing of math. If you want
to be a great player, if you play every single day, two, three
hours every single day, or a course of a
year, how much better are you getting?
Most kids will play maybe, you know, an hour and
a half, two days a week.
Right. Put a math on that. It not, it's
(05:45):
notnna get it done's not gonna get it done. Right. So if
you're obsess, obsessively training
two, three hours every single day over a year, over
two years 'accelerate you make quantum leaps,
man.
>> Speaker B (05:57):
Just doing a summer camp for two weeks, you. You see a
difference. I remember playing basketball, you see you get a
lot better. You come back more confident playing on the playground with guys
who used to beat you.
>> Speaker C (06:07):
Yeah. And like I tell the parents what my team, I said, it, it's
when, uh, I say your kids are gonna become great basketball players and like
really, like, yeah, it's not. There's no
math.
>> Speaker B (06:16):
It's it show up every single day.
>> Speaker C (06:18):
Show up every single day, do the work.
>> Clint Armitage (06:19):
All right, that was pretty good, right? Kobe was talking
some wisdom there. He was dropping some nuggets. So there is some
wisdom in what he was saying and I'll address a
couple of those things that he said. But we're going toa
take a look even deeper at how
God can change your mentality and take
it to another level. And this is where our life
(06:40):
gets blessed. When we understand what God
can do and when we understand
what our purpose and calling is in our
life. Now, Kobe did say a couple of wise
things. You know, one of the things was actually not from him, but it was
from his father. When his father said to him
that whether he Win or lose, you know, score as many points
(07:00):
or not score any points, his father said
that, um, I'm gonna love you no matter
what. And Kobe said that did something to
him. It gave him security. And
then from that point, Kobe was able to step it
up because he knew it didn't matter if he failed,
because his father would love him. That is exactly
something that our father would say to us.
(07:23):
And as a matter of fact, he does say it to us. Our
father speaks just like that because
our Father in heaven says to us, I'm
gonna love you no matter what. And that does give us
security. Even as adults, when we know that God
is with us, God is for us, who can be against
us? Then we can fail. It's allght
(07:43):
if we fail. So that was godly wisdom. I loved that. That's
awesome. The other thing that Kobe talked
about was being an expert at the
fundamentals. Remember, he scored zero
points. He scored nothing. And then within a few
years, he became the best in the state.
And the only reason why he said he became the best is because he
worked on the basics. He worked on his
(08:05):
fundamentals. And so the same thing I teach in my
training classes is you just have to be an
expert at the fundamentals. You don't have to be this rock
star. All you have to do is be an expert at
the fundamentals. What's the fundamentals in your
calling? You just have to do the fundamentals
well in whatever you believe your purpose is, whatever
(08:25):
you believe your calling is, Learn
as much as you can, train as much as you can. Now,
again, this is on a human
plane, because no matter what, God can
bless that to another level. That's when we include God.
That's when God is at the base, at the foundation
of it all. It changes things, but there is
(08:45):
some wisdom ``om to that human
side of things, right? And that's what he was talking about.
And if we're an expert at the fundamentals, we know what
we want to do, and we continue to practice what
we are good at, what we believe our
calling is, where our gifts are, then
we will be blessed. God will bless us. But then when we
(09:05):
add God into it, when we take God's
word, we take God's calling and his purpose for us.
It is totally something else.
So let's look at three things here in Proverbs. We're going
to look at a few verses in this episode,
but we're going to start off in Proverbs. The first verse we're going to look
at comes from Proverbs 16, 3
(09:25):
says this. Commit to the Lord whatever you
do, and your plans will
succeed. See, we have to start off with
a mentality of putting God first. We have
to seek the kingdom first. We have to seek
God first. Once we put him first and
we trust him, then God will start
allowing us to expand and to get better. But
(09:48):
we have to continue to practice. We have to continue to train. We have
to continue with the fundamentals, the
basics. And God will continue to bless us
because he has given us this calling. And
so that's why we're committing everything to the Lord. And that's why
our plans will succeed, like it says in Proverbs.
Okay, let's look at the next proverb. Proverbs 16,
verse 9. It says this. In his
(10:10):
heart, man plans his course, but
the Lord determines his steps. First we got our
calling, and now we've got the plan.
But as you can see, our plan
is established by God. We
can have our plan, we can make our plan, but
God establishes our steps. He takes those
(10:30):
steps. He opens those doors, he closes
doors. He leads us down a path like a
lamp onto our feet. So that's our calling. And now
that's our plan. It includes God being
in control. And that's what we have to do. We have to allow God to be
in control of our plans and our calling
and our purpose, and then we will be able to
(10:51):
step it up to another level. Of course, we have our part,
which is working on the fundamentals, getting the basics
down, being an expert at the basics.
Okay, let's look at the last part of this here. Okay,
so we've got our calling, we've got our plan. And
now we're moving to Proverbs 18:16. And
this is about our gift. This is what it says. Verse
(11:11):
16 says, A man's gift makes
room for him and brings him before
great men. So we all have our own gifts. We
have gifts that God gives us, our spiritual gifts. They also
manifest in physical ways. So if we keep
those three things in
perspective, keeping God at the forefront
of all of those things, then we can
(11:33):
expect greatness. And greatness
comes really from what Kobe was talking about in terms of the human
plane. It comes from being an expert, training
hard, working hard, focusing a
lot on what our giftings are. So see, we just
put those three things in play. Our calling from God,
our plans from God, and our gifting from God.
(11:53):
We put those three things in play with God at the
forefront. And then we add onto it this mamba
mentality, this Human mentality of working
hard, being an expert. Then we're go going toa
really see a difference in our lives in what
we can do to bless other people. Because remember, it's not about us.
God gives us these gifts so we can bless
(12:13):
others. So we have to take what God has given us
and use it for his glory. If we start doing
that, you're going to see some miracles. You're going to see some
amazing things that God can do through you. Now
let's, uh, talk about some other verses that support
these things. Okay? Let's look at what King Solomon has to
say because he was the wisest man in the world, right? So let's take a look
at what Solomon says about work. Let's look at this verse.
(12:36):
In Ecclesiastes chapter 2,
verse 26, it says this. To the man
who pleases him, God gives
wisdom, knowledge and happiness.
But to the sinner, he gives the task of gathering
and storing up wealth to hand it over to the
one who pleases God. This too is
(12:56):
meaningless, a, uh, chasing after the wind. Solomon is dropping
some wisdom right there. If we want to be happy in our
work, if we want to be satisfied in our
toil, right? Because most toil, most work
is meaningless because we're doing it for ourselves. But
when we include God and we please God with
our work, he blesses it. That's what Solomon is saying. And
(13:17):
then in the next chapter, in chapter three, in
Ecclesiastes, Solomon is talking about the
time for everything. There's a time for
everything. You may have been working on your fundamentals for a long
time now, but remember, we have to add God's timing and God is
in control. So there's a time for everything.
So let's read what it says in Ecclesiastes 3,
verses 9 through 14. I have seen
(13:39):
the burden God has laid on men. He has
made everything beautiful in its time.
He has also set eternity in the hearts of
men. Yet they cannot fathom what
God has done from the beginning to end.
I know that there is nothing better for men than to
be happy and do good while they live.
(13:59):
That everyone may eat and drink and find
satisfaction in all his toil. This
is a gift from God. I know that everything God
does will endure forever. Nothing can be
added to it and nothing taken away from it.
God does it so that men will revere
Him. Okay, he said that God has made everything
(14:20):
beautiful in its time. Remember, it's not our timeline. We think it
is, but it's not. God establishes our steps.
He also Takes control of the timeline. That's why
it doesn't happen exactly when you want it to happen. But all we're supposed
to do is prepare our fields for
rain. Well, how do we do that? We've got to make sure all our fields
are ready. All, uh, our planting is ready, our seeds
(14:40):
are ready, our dirt and soil is ready. So we
have to keep on toiling, keep on working. If we do
this, then God's going to eventually bless it
in his time, and it's going to be beautiful and we are
going to succeed. And that's what we have to
start understanding when we're working so hard for
things.
Okay, let's look at the next verses here. Next one is in
(15:01):
James, chapter four, verses two and three is
what it says. It says, you kill and covet, but you cannot
have what you want. You quarrel and fight, you do
not have because you do not ask
God. When you ask. You do not
receive because you ask with wrong
motives that you may spend what you get
on your own pleasures. Okay, so that verse right
(15:24):
there talks about how we are doing these
plans for ourselves. And we have to understand that we have
to do these things for God. We have to put God first, Then we get his
calling. We use our gift, and then we use the
plan. We make a plan with God in mind, meaning
we allow God to direct our steps. And that's what
James is talking about here. He's highlighting the fact
(15:44):
that we don't have because we don't ask
God. And when we do ask God, we don't receive
because we're asking with the wrong motives. We ask
with motives to get the blessings for ourselves,
when really the blessings are supposed to be for other people.
Our gift that God has given us is supposed to
be for others. It's not for ourselves. So when we ask,
we ask what the wrong motives, and that's why we don't receive. Then
(16:07):
when we start to put the plan together, we remember it's
God's steps that he establishes for us.
And then when we start to use our gifts, it's supposed
to be to bless others. That's how it has to
be in order for us to succeed, that we may
glorify God. Because that's the only reason why we're here, is
to glorify him, not ourselves. Problem is,
(16:27):
we always want to glorify ourselves. We always
want the accolades. We always want people to
praise us. And we have to step away from that. We have to understand
that God's plan is not our plan. God's
Ways are not our ways. But when we know it's God's
plan, we know what the outcome is. We win.
If God is setting this up for a win, then we will
(16:47):
win. If it's not for a win, then it's for
learning. God will give us some struggles so that we learn.
But then he blesses us. We learn,
we get blessed, we learn, we get blessed.
We struggle and then we get blessed. And then we
struggle, and then we learn, and then we get blessed.
It's always a plan to move us forward,
(17:08):
to get closer to him, to understand him, to be
more like him. Jesus gave us the example. In the
end, God gets the glory, the work gets
finished, the calling comes to fruition.
The purpose, the end result, is a
blessing to others because God is in it
and he gets the glory. And that's what we have to start
(17:28):
doing it for. Take ourselves out of the
equation in terms of our pride and our
selfishness. How do we bless others?
Is that our calling? Are you doing what you're called to
do? Do you know that you're doing something that
is based on what God is calling you to do?
Is that your purpose? Is that one of your purposes? We glorify
God by the things that we do. We follow our calling, we use
(17:51):
our gifts and we plan our course
knowing that God's in control. We work hard,
we do all the fundamentals, we become
experts. And then God blesses it on top. When he puts his
spirit, when the Holy Spirit starts working in us, because
we're open. Because if you're saved, then the Holy Spirit
is already in you. And then we allow the Holy Spirit to work
(18:11):
through us, for us, with us,
and people are blessed and God's name is praised.
Everything happens the way it's supposed to happen.
But what we have to do is surrender our pride,
surrender our control, give it up to
God. Seek him first. And
then we could talk about this physical
(18:32):
mambma mentality. It all plays together. So
bottom line, yes, you can be an expert at the
fundamentals. Yes, you can have this mamba
mentality. But you also need the Lord
involved in every piece of the
plan, from the beginning to the middle, to
the end. And then it's going to be a blessing
to others, to ourselves, to
(18:54):
God. This is how we work.
God's Mommba mentality.
Well, this has been awesome. Thanks for
listening. I hope this did something for you. I hope
you understand your calling. I hope you understand your
purpose. I hope you understand your gift.
I hope God takes you to the next level
with God's Mamba mentality. Until
(19:16):
