(00:00):
Now I want to start off this ranking by saying that unlike
other Marvel nerds, the Fantastic Four never meant much
to me. Now in my defense, I never read
any of the comics except for a couple of the X-Men comics.
Do not blasphemy in these chambers.
(00:32):
Welcome back to The Rank. I'm John, and today we're going
to be ranking Fantastic Four First steps starring Pedro
Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Evan MossBacharach, Joseph Quinn, Ralph
Innocent and Julia Garner. Adapter from the comics created
by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, witha story by Cat Wood, Ian
Springer, Jeff Kaplan and Eric Pearson, with a screenplay
(00:53):
written by Ian Springer, Jeff Kaplan, Eric Pearson and Josh
Friedman and directed by Matt Shackman.

Podcast OK, let's find out how the newest entry into the MCU
fair? Does it hold up to Thunderbolts?
How will it rank against the other MCU movies that I've
already ranked? Let's find out starting with the
Pope Notables So as always, we start the vote notables with the
movies financials. It came out this past weekend,
(01:36):
so for its. First weekend it.
Garnered $118 million domestically and $100 million
internationally for a worldwide total of $218,000,000.
And this is against the budget of $200 million.
So once again, we've got a question of whether or not it
will cross the $1 billion mark because we know it'll hit the
$400 million profitability line.So here's my prediction.
(01:58):
I think both Superman and this one will not hit $1 billion, but
that Superman and we'll get closer to it.
So now this next poet notable they do reveal in the the
credits of the movie, but it's still fun to note that this
movie takes place on Earth 828 because Jack Kirby's birthday
was August 28th. It wasn't just that though.
Many of the designs and sets in this movie are inspired by Jack
(02:18):
Kirby. So as Kevin Feige, the producer
and head honcho of the MCU put it quote, we wanted this movie
to be an unabashed celebration of Mr. Kirby, who I think should
be spoken in the same breath as Stan Lee at every moment.
End Quote. So as a matter of fact, one of
Matt Shakman's favorite shots from the movie is when he
recreates the cover of the firstFantastic Four comic.
Now we've got a poet notable forthe comic book nerds out there.
(02:40):
The iteration of the Silver Surfer we get in this movie is
Shala Ball, who in the comics was the love interest of the
original Silver Surfer, Noren Rad.
So there you go. Now the director.
Matt Shakman is a director aftermy heart.
Now, if you've listened to a bunch of previous episodes of
The Rank, especially when it wasboth Zach and I hosting it,
you'll know that I'm a big fan of practical effects.
(03:01):
I definitely prefer practical the CGI whenever possible and
Shakman did exactly that, sayingthat Interstellar 2001, A Space
Odyssey and Apollo 13 were huge references for him.
For example, he built a 14 foot high spaceship model.
He said he quote really wanted to go with his grounded aversion
of space as possible. It's a combination of Marvel and
Apollo 11. Of course, we still have a lot
(03:23):
of CG. And for those of you who don't
know, Matt was the showrunner for one Division as well.
So this wasn't his first foray into the MCU.
Now I do want to touch on Pedro Pascal's prep work as well here.
Apparently the film makers had wanted to have the actors
develop an early 60s Mid-Atlantic dialect, but
eventually decided not to. It was tough for Pascal to shake
the accent though quote because I was so into the era.
(03:46):
End Quote. What else did he do to prepare
for the role? Well, he studied an.
Octopus to get an idea of how toconvincingly display Mr.
Fantastic's elastic limbs. All right.
And finally, Last Poet notable. This is the 37th MCU movie and
the first of Phase Six, so let'sgo to the movie overview.
I want to start off this rankingby saying that unlike other
Marvel nerds, the Fantastic Fournever meant much to me.
(04:09):
Now, in my defense, I never readany of the comics except for a
couple of the X-Men comics do not.
Blasphemy in these chambers. So I didn't realize that the
Fantastic Four were like the original superheroes of Marvel
until I got more steeped into the lore of Marvel due to the
MCU. My only exposure to the
Fantastic Four were from the Foxmovies from the early 2000s with
(04:29):
Chris Evans and Jessica Alba andother people that I don't
remember. Oh, chiklis.
Michael Chiklis. I remember liking that movie
just fine, but I was also quite fond of Jessica Alba at the
time, which helped its case for me back then.
Anyway, this is all to say that when Disney purchased Fox, I was
excited for X-Men joining the MCU, but when everyone was
jazzed about Fantastic Four coming in, I didn't really give
(04:51):
a shit. Las Femur also, I always thought
Mr. Fantastic Superpower was kind of late, so I'm prefacing
this this ranking with this. But now I've seen this movie and
I want to see more of the Fantastic Four.
So that might give you an idea of how much I enjoyed the movie.
We've had four superhero movies this year so far, three MCU and
1D CUI haven't ranked Captain America Brave New World yet
(05:12):
because it came out before I went solo and started doing new
movies, but I have done the other three, including this one.
But these three have been just excellent.
The three I'm talking about, Thunderbolts, Superman, and now
Fantastic Four First Steps and Superman, and this one had a
similar theme about parenthood. This one narrowed it down a
little bit to motherhood, but itwas really quite lovely.
I'm realizing, as I say, that I may be watching too much
(05:34):
Taskmaster, the British show, sothey say lovely a lot in that
land. Anyway, all three of these have
been surprisingly touching, all three emotionally affecting me.
There was a surprising amount ofexposition in this one, but it
somehow didn't feel bogged down by.
The only piece of the need for exposition that hurt it is that
in my opinion, it made Raid Richards A flat, which is funny
'cause he could probably get really flat, which felt like a
(05:57):
waste of Pedro Pascals charm andcharisma.
So that felt a little bit disappointing.
But the others make up for it, especially Vanessa Kirby, who
really steals the show. The other portion of this that
is just fantastic, he really is on fire today is the retro 60s
futuristic set pieces. It felt almost steampunk, but
thankfully it wasn't because I don't really enjoy steampunk.
But really the entire movie is just gorgeous, just a joy to
(06:20):
look at. There's this great mix of old
technology and advanced technology.
It definitely made me wonder if our technological advances are
based on our cultural interests.Like if our cultural interest
were a scientific advancement asopposed to entertainment and
telecommunication advancement, would we still have vinyl
records or or bases on the moon and Mars?
This posits that we would have had warp Dr. Of course it uses
(06:41):
the great man theory where one man solves it all and not to
discount the other three of the Fantastic Four, but all the
technological advancements are based on the genius Reed
Richards. It's a myth we love to believe,
but it's so rarely true. And I use rarely just because
I'm a big believer and not usingnever or always unless you're
absolutely sure it applies. My distrust of that myth doesn't
(07:02):
distract from my enjoyment of the movie though, because just
like most, as much as I disagreewith the myth in in historical
terms, I still enjoy it in my fiction.
I may have slid a little off topic here, so just to bring it
back to the movie, I absolutely enjoyed my time in the theater
and I don't know that there is anything more that you can ask
for from a movie. This is more than just a
superhero movie, it has heart, just as the previous two
(07:24):
superhero movies I've ranked do as well.
I'm thrilled to see the resurgence of these movies, as
as much as Martin Scorsese wouldbe annoyed by it, I really enjoy
a good superhero movie. I've been wanting to get back to
enjoying them and I believe they've shown that they still
have some tricks up their sleeveand I for one am excited to see
what they've got in store for us.
Obviously I really enjoyed the movie, but how much is the
(07:46):
question right? Will it top Superman?
Will it be above Thunderbolts? Will it end up in the top tier
as an absolute masterpiece? Probably not, but maybe let's go
to the rank and find out. I'll wank.
So the rank is where I rank the movie based on 10 categories
story, acting, originality, action sequences, film
coherence, hero appeal, villain appeal, slash hatred, supporting
(08:07):
characters appeal, the final showdown and my rank I rank it
on a scale of one to five one being the worst five being the
best. Now before I rank the movie, if
you're enjoying this, please leave a like and and let us
know. It really helps us out.
So anyway, back to the next category, which is story.
And I gave that a four and a half.
I thought this story was great. One of the things that it does
well is giving you a bunch of exposition without making you
(08:28):
feel like you're sitting througha bunch of exposition.
They were required to build a whole world out of a world that
is a facsimile of our own, and they did it superbly.
So let's go to the next category, which is acting, which
I gave a four. I would say that acting was very
good. I think that Pedro Pascal was
good, but he was a little constricted by his character.
It didn't make me wonder if theyheld him back or if he held
himself back. Either way, I would have liked
(08:49):
to have seen a little more of that Pedro charm.
Joseph Quinn was a lot of fun. Evan Moss Bachrach was a little
bland, but still good. Julia Garner is the Silver
Surfer really tended to steal the scene she was in, so that
was pretty cool. But the standout by far was
Vanessa Kirby. She was absolutely excellent in
this and I can't wait to see herplay Sue Storm again.
On to the next category. Originality.
(09:10):
I gave that a three look. The originality is in the set
pieces and the look and feel of the movie, which was incredible.
But that can only get you so faras this is a superhero movie
that does exactly what you'd expect from a superhero movie.
It does it well, but that doesn't mean it's original.
However, the set pieces were so cool that I refused to go below
at 3. So let's go to action sequences,
which I give them five. They are excellent.
(09:31):
There weren't actually that manyaction sequences in the film,
and yet they were amazingly done.
I was absolutely at the edge of my seat throughout the action
scenes, and I couldn't believe how intense and tension filled
they were. Like, we all know the heroes
make it, right? I mean, that's the point of an
action movie. The hero lives to kick ass
another day. Even so, I was still
legitimately worried about everyone.
I mean, well done, well done. So let's go to Film Coherence,
(09:53):
which I gave a 4 1/2. So there's really only a couple
pieces of this that stood out tome as not cohering.
It's nitpicking and I don't wantto spoil anything, so I'll say
it like this. When they meet Galactus,
something is left behind but isn't wrecked at all somehow,
and they have no trouble with their eggs, which doesn't make
sense with how they were broughtthere in the 1st place.
Also, there's some time dilationphysics, which I don't think
really made sense for them coming back home, but
(10:15):
considering that I have no idea how to do the math for that, I'm
happy to just smile and grimly. So let's go to Hero Appeal,
which I gave a 4 1/2. They were excellent.
However, as stated earlier, I felt like Reed was a little
flat. The thing was a little flat as
well, not terribly so, but enough on both of them to drop
it to a 4.5. Though they might have dropped
it further if not for Sue Storm, who was just fucking amazing.
(10:35):
So let's go to Villain Appeal. Slash Hatred, which I gave a 4
1/2. Galactus was pretty legitimately
terrifying. I actually liked that they
didn't give him too much motivation, he's just hungry and
he apparently doesn't want to be.
I was absolutely rooting againsthim as much as I was rooting for
our heroes, so really well done.Next category is supporting
characters appeal, which I gave a four and a half.
How about? That robot, huh?
(10:56):
Kirby, him alone is great, right?
But we've had our second sighting of the therapist from
Ted Lasso in a big summer movie. She was Damps and Idris's mom
and F1 and now she's the fantastic force PR person.
So I don't know your name. I don't know her name, but she
was she was fun in both. The Silver Surfer was absolutely
fantastic. There's not many other
supporting characters because they have so many main roles,
(11:17):
but the ones they had were were good.
But what brings the score up is Julia Garner's Silver Surfer,
which was just really great. So let's go to the final
showdown, which I gave A5. I honestly can't believe how
much I enjoyed the final showdown when I knew it was
going to be Galactus. I thought this won't end up
being that great, Another CGI heavy final showdown for an MCU
movie. But it was excellent and the
stakes were perfect. It was great.
(11:39):
So now we go to my rank last category, which I gave a four
and a half. I know based on these rankings
you'd think that would this would be a 5.
But I think my disappointment, minor though it was, of not
getting to see Pedro's charisma mixed with some feelings about
the time dilation and the issuesI discussed in the film.
Coherence is what drives it downslightly.
But to be clear, 4 1/2 is damn good, as is this movie damn
(12:00):
good. So that puts the total for
Fantastic Four first steps at 44.25, which puts it in the tier
Supreme Cinema, just missing theabsolute masterpiece.
Now how does that rank against Thunderbolts and Superman is the
question. So Thunderbolts had a 41.7.
So it was supreme cinema, but not quite as good as this one.
(12:20):
I don't know if I agree with. That or not, but you know, it's
my ranking, so I guess I have to.
And then for Superman, Superman I believe made it to the
absolute masterpiece tier and ithas as it got a 45.25.
So it was better than Thunderbolts, not as good as
Superman, which is interesting because if you had asked me just
off the top of my head which oneI thought was better,
Thunderbolts or Fantastic Four, I probably would have said
(12:41):
Thunderbolts, but I don't know, I really liked Fantastic Four.
So maybe I'm maybe I'm wrong on that, but that's it.
That's the whole show. So thanks for listening and or

All right, Buchu. I haven't ranked Captain America
Brave New World yet because it came out before I went.
(13:23):
So man, I was really hoping to not give you any bloopers this
time. Wow.
Wow, I haven't ranked Captain America Brave New World yet.
Holy shit. I haven't ranked Captain America
Brave New World yet because it came out before, Before I,
before I went solo, before I went solo.
That's my job.
