thought the, the funny thing isit, I guess it technically

no, and so I think that's thatthat contributed to the delay,
because when I'd open it up, thelight came on and um, you know,
the, the big five pound rollswere still frozen, solid.
It was just the.
When I grabbed some organs, Iwasop.

That's not good, um, so, but um, but yeah, um, you know, got to
get a new freezer and um, itwas one of the.
You know, I got to thinking that, uh, uh, you know how that kind

of situation can probably bepretty panic inducing for some
pet parents.
Sure, you know, with the, withthe food and everything, and,
and I would say that, you know,this is why we always talk about
, like, how dogs are designed toeat raw food and how they're
made Um, because the, the foodthat's in there is still good,

um, you know, now, I mean, Idiscovered it after, you know,
probably a day or something likethat, or maybe not even that
long, so we're not talking aboutlike an extended period of time
or um, anything like that.
But you know, I got my food outof there and I'm not super
worried about the rest of thefood in there.

Um, you know, I'll get it intothe new freezer as soon as it's
cool and uh, and we'll go along,because you know my dogs are
not me.
Um, there's no, there's nofreezers, there's no
refrigerators in the wild.
So a couple hours or half a daywhere that wasn't in complete

frozen conditions, it doesn'truin the food.
I hope that people aren't outthere throwing away food because

they forgot it in their car fora couple hours or something
like that.
There's a margin for error whenit comes to this food.

It's not one of those things where food doesn't
instantly go bad.
No, it's all the bacteria thatcrawls up on there and it's
going to kill them.
I'm just like I mean okay.
So people would say, well, whatis the margin of error?
Where would you say I'm notgoing to feed it?
At what point would you say,nah, I'm probably just going to
toss that, Start over would yousay, nah, I'm probably just

I would, I mean smell , you know, I, I, I think it's
one of those things like spoiledmeat and things like that is to
me it's like you know it whenyou see it.
I don't know if I coulddescribe like what I would think

especially for you know,especially for my dogs but,

brian a lot of people think thattripe is spoiled.

And so if you say, well, you know, when you see it,
people are like why it's rancid.
Well, that's a good word thatdescribes how it smells.
It smells.
Some people say like aport-a-potty, Some people say,
you know rancid.
So I think I don't know, Idon't know.

We as humans get grossed out.
Obviously dogs don't know.
I don't know.

Because they eat vomit and theypoop, right.
There's a lot of dogs out thereThink about this there's a lot
of dogs out there that havecorophagia, right.
So that's where they just eatpoop, or is that, you know, Pico
or whatever?
And they're not dead.

And I'm wondering why we don'tmake that connection.
It's like there are, or theywouldn't sell, the stuff that
supposedly makes them stopeating it, which I've never
really seen that work.
But there are some dogs thatliterally just eat a bunch of
shit, Literally.

Yeah, you know, and I like, like I said, it's hard
for me to answer that questionabout you know, because I mean
I've been doing this for almostseven years and I don't think
that I've ever thrown out anyfood.
Years and I don't think thatI've ever thrown out any food?

no, as a matter of fact we have used the food, that
people say that they can't feedtheir dogs because there's
something wrong with them.

We're like okie doke well, we're not going to sell it
, so just bring them back andwe'll feed it to our dogs and I,
and I have definitely done some, you know, non-advisable things
.
I mean, I've, I've, I've leftfood in my car overnight in the
middle of summer, yep.
Um and I've just I put it backin the freezer and put it back

in the rotation and and the dogshave been fine.
Um, so I don't know, I guessit's just one of those
confidence things that comeswith time.
Um, that, uh, you know, youjust you get to know your dogs
and and what they can handle,and, um, you know, and I will
say, you know, when it comes to,you know, food gets blamed for

a lot of things, but it's rarelyever the food it's, it's
something else.
You know, if your dog gets sickbecause they ate some food that
maybe sat out on the counterlonger than you would have liked
, there's something going on inthem that their protection

mechanisms are down right.
You know, and, and that's.
You can't blame the food.
Yeah, um, you know, because ahealthy dog would have ate that
food and been fine.

So you know and that's that's good advice for
folks that get things shippedokay.
So when you get things shippedright and people are really
worried, get things shippedright and people are really
worried, oh my gosh, I'm afraidit's going to be totally thought
out.
Rarely has it ever been totallythought out right.
It's.
It's still cold and even youknow a lot of different raw

companies out there will sayyour food's fine if it's cold.
But I think people can makethings up in their head and it
frightens them so they toss it.
But that's good food, goodmoney that you're tossing out,
so good for you.

I did so all is well.

How old was that freezer?

Five years.

And you know, the funny thingis is you go to the appliance
store and you know you tell themyou're like, hey, I need to
replace this, and it was Xnumber of years or whatever.
And they always nod and they'relike, yeah, that's about right.
And I'm like, then why does itcost this much?

You know, if, if you're tellingme I have to replace this every
five years, then it needs tocost about half of what you're
charging, and then I'll, andthen I'll gladly replace it
every five years.
Right, but you know stuff is um, you know refrigerators, you
know $3,000 and you know, andthe guy at Home Depot I remember

one time told me that fridgesnow are, you know, 10 years if
you're lucky.

I was walking through Homeot acouple of days ago and this lady
the stalker.
She said hey, she wanted totalk to somebody.
I was like looking around, shewas like talking to me.
I said yeah.
She said I gotta show yousomething.
She said you see these garbagebags right here.

She scanned the new ones.
She goes these are the new ones, what do you see?
I was like I don't know, whatdo I see?
She said there's only 50 inhere, there's five less and it's

Oh gosh, being a nutritionist, oh gosh, um, I
actually don't think I've beenasked anything really strange.
I would say yeah, I mean it'snot a strange question, but a

very popular question is whatcan I add to my dog's food, your
finger?
Popular question is what can Iadd to my dog's food, um, your
finger?
And I don't.
I get the feel.
I get the feeling that peopleare just there.
They just they can't processthat the food is complete and

has everything that that youneed, and they just they want to
add something to it.
They're like don't I need atopper?

You know don't don't, don't.

I need some Dr Harvey's Okay.

No, I'm going to say no on that one, you know.

Speaker 2 (11:18):
And so you know, just , I don't know it, I, I don't
know if it just doesn't looklike it's enough or or anything
like that, but um, you know, Ilove to add things to my dog's
food, you know, and, and weencourage people to add stuff we
talk about.
You know eggs and tripe and youknow fish and you know things

like that.
You know have fun.
You know mix it up and you knowyou got some.
You know you got some leftoverbroccoli stocks that you, you
know.
I mean I don't know who wantsto eat the.
I hate the broccoli stalks.
I'll just eat the tops but Iwon't eat the stalks.
You know, throw those things inthe bowl.
I mean that's.

You know that's great, but youknow there's there's a
difference between benefit and anecessity.
You know there's nothing thatyou need to add to your dog's
bowl If you're feeding a speciesappropriate diet, like what,

like what we sell, um, there'snothing that you need to add.
Um, but there's things that youcan that are benefit, but
they're not.
You know they're not going tomake a difference.
You know they're.
They're not making up foranything that's missing, and I
think people need to understandthat distinction.

Well, let me, let me give you and I go ahead.

I was gonna say that I think a lot of a lot of these
companies that are out that dotoppers, and you know, people,
that that kind of fall for thatmarketing and stuff like that
that stuff is being added tomake up for what's missing from
the species-appropriate part ofthe diet Meat, bones, organ and

fat.
That's what you need.
That's what you need.
So, you know, let's concentrateon meeting those needs before
we start worrying about what,what else we can throw in the
bowl.

You know, I think a lot of petparents, when they're feeding
their, when they're feedingtheir dogs, they're they're more
concerned with the color of thedrapes than you know pour in
the foundation of the house, andso, you know, let's make sure,
let's make sure that we'regetting everything they need,
and then we can have fun adding,you know, other stuff in there.
You know, as long as it's wholefood, you know real food.
You know, add it in.

And and I think that you know,one of the great things that you
can add in if you're reallylooking for something is
mushrooms, and we're going totalk about that in just one
second.

But I want to ask you this question really quick,
right, I'm going to read youthis recipe, okay, and I want
you to tell me in this recipehow you might change it up to
make it even healthier andeasier.
But again, this is a companythat does a little magic and and

maybe we need to create somemagic, meaning we need to create
all these things that you canadd to your dog's food, because
people love that and we, we tellthem that all the time, but
they still want to add, okay, um, but if you're, but if you are
someone that wants to, um, savesome money and you want to make
sure that your dog is gettingeverything that they need from

the food, then that's what wecan do for you right here at

But, brian, here is this recipeOkay, beef, and then tripe
liver, kidneys, spleen, cannedpink salmon, bone meal, canned
boiled oysters and raw sunflowerseeds.

They say well, this is acomplete and balanced, and they
make it sound really kind ofdifficult.
But how else would you, we, we,we pretty much have this right
here at raw dog food and company.

yeah, they were.
I mean, that was a rockingrecipe, right up to the canned
pink salmon, um.
So yeah, I think, everythingfrom the salmon on down, get it
out of here.
So we're going to take out fromthis recipe, we're going to
take of here.

So we're going to take out from this recipe?
We're going to take out thesalmon, we're going to take out
the bone meal, we're going totake out the boiled oysters and
raw sunflower seeds.
What do you want to?
What else you want to put inthere?

I'm gonna I'm gonna throw a sardine in there and
then I'm going to throw in aduck head or a duck wing.
You know some raw, meaty bonethat my dog can.
You know, get some enrichmentand get some of the instinctual
behaviors out by.

You know rip tearing andshredding at a bone at a bone.

So, basically, this is our beef and tripe recipe,
minus those four things that youtalked about, that you don't
need, and just add a sardine, aswe love to add, and add a duck
head or chicken wing how about achicken foot?
Because what we're doing iswe're getting the real bone in
that right, and we're gettingour omega-3s from the fish real

fish with real bone.
But this is what thesecompanies do.
They do these calculations andthey make it really difficult
and I don't know.
I think in today's world peopledon't have time for these big,
long spreadsheets.
So let's think it out, let'smake it simple, and that's what
Brian can do for you right hereat raw dog food and companycom.

All right, let's talk aboutmushrooms, brian.
Why do you like them?
What up with the mushrooms, man?

Um, I like mushrooms because mushrooms have been
healing people for thousands ofyears.
They, you know, they're rootedin traditional Chinese medicine.
I was reading something theother day that was talking about
how the the medicinalproperties of mushrooms are in

almost every like modern daypharmaceutical.
But they can't, you know theycan't patent mushrooms.
You know you can't.
You know a company can't comeout and you know, grab mushrooms
and patent them and sell them.
So these pharmaceuticalcompanies are taking components

(18:29):
of things like mushrooms andherbs and plants and things like
that.
They're taking bits and piecesof them and they're putting them
into a pill and slapping apatent on them.
Um, and so it's like, why notit?
It's?
It's the same as what we werejust talking about with that
recipe.
You know, it's like why usebone meal when you can just use

real bone?

um, because the fake stuff.
The fake stuff is just as goodas the real stuff and if you and
if you don't agree, you'reracist.

I'm just so yeah, so I mean, I think, uh, you know, I
think mushrooms are, um, youknow mushrooms are great and
they, you know they have so manybenefits, benefits.
And again, if you're, if you'rereally looking for something to
add to your dog's bowl, ifyou're really set on you know I

don't think they're gettingenough or they need some sort of
boost, then yeah, let's addsome mushrooms in there.
You know, some of the some ofthe benefits of mushrooms is
immune resilience, brain andnerve function.
They support that.
They manage oxidative stress.

They help maintain the gutflora and healthy digestion,
encourage skin and coat vitalityand promote calm demeanor
during stressful events.
I need them, I need mushrooms inmy life, you know who wouldn't
want any of those things fortheir dog, you know?

And so, yeah, I think that youknow.
I think mushrooms are a greataddition and they're easy.
And we make it even easierbecause we have brought in some

All the uses that I see for alot of the mushrooms point to

using them to support your dogas they get older and, um, you
know, whether they're dealing,you know, the onset of doggy
dementia, you know, or they'renot showing any signs and you
just want to support them asthey get older.

You know mushrooms are a great way to do that and
there are some deadly mushroomsout there, guys, and Death Cap
is one of them.
Death Cap, as the name says,death Cap.
And then there's another onecalled Destroying Angel.
I don't know about this one,but one of the reasons I know

about Death Cap is because I hadlistened to a podcast on the
mushroom killer and shebasically went out and foraged
and this was in I don't know ifit was in the uk or was in
australia or someplace like that, maybe it's in australia and
she went out and foraged andcalled her husband's family over

She was mad at her husband, madat his parents.
Basically she killed, like Ithink, um four people put them
in the food, killed them.
So, long story short, don't makesure that that you don't.
You don't uh it.
Just give your dog any mushroomthat is wild out there, because

there are some that are very,very uh, neurotoxic and um you
you may think that they're allgood, but they aren't all good.
So stay with some that'salready been formulated, already
been um, uh proven, like theones we have for micro dog and
also the ones that we have fromadored Beast and Four Leaf

We have quite an array ofmushrooms right here at Raw Dog

Yeah, I was just going to say that's a really

I get some mushrooms in my lawn, especially after it rains.
The white ones, yep, and prettyimpressive too.
And you know I hope that peoplearen't tempted to.
You know I always get rid ofthem because I don't want.

You know not only my dogs, butyou know people walking their
dogs through the neighborhood.
I mean, we know how dogs liketo put things in their mouth,
right, and you know.
So that's a good tip about youknow being careful, which is you
know why it's good to work with.
You know work with somebodywho's done all the work, the
hard work for you.
You know, because you know noneof the mushrooms that we have

in the store you know are goingto be a problem for your dog or
a problem even for you.
These can be taken by humans aswell.
That also leads to another pointtoo, that the mushrooms that
you find in the store are allgoing to be safe for your dog.

So if you wanted to give yourdog some shiitake mushrooms that
you sauteed up or somethingassuming that you're not doing
it in a lot of butter or thingslike that those are all
perfectly safe for your dog aswell.
Just remember that mushrooms,like vegetables, your dog needs
well.

dog needs help breaking themdown, so don't give them to them
raw.
You got to, you got to cookthem up a little bit, you got to
saute them, you know somethinglike that, and then and then
they're able to digest them.

And we do have the ones thatare in powder form that you can
add to the raw food, and then wealso have the ones that are in
liquid form.
Now on the liquid form oneslike the turkey tail, and I
believe it's the reishi, is itno?
Chaga, Turkey tail?
No, it's the chaga.
And the which ones are theliquid forms?

again, so for the single mushroom extracts we have
turkey tail and chaga fromAdored Beast, and then we've
just brought in lion's mane andreishi from MycoDog, so we've
got all four now.

Um and uh, just a, a different company on the lion's
mane and reishi now, if you havethe liquid mushrooms, you just
go ahead and drop them right inthe mouth, or do you put it in
the food?

I just put it in the food.
I just put it in the food, Okay, Yep, Yep, that's the, that's
the easiest way.
Um and uh, it's just going togo through the digestive system
and um, you know, um, you, youcould put them right in the
mouth if you wanted, Um, but uh,you know, with something like

Reishi is pretty bitter, um, and so I don't think
your dog um he he may not likeyou as well as he liked you

Uh, if you shoot some, if youshoot some Reishi straight into
his mouth, so, um, so, probablybest to uh, best to mix it up in
the food.
Um and uh and food, and letthem get it that way.

Yeah, yeah.
And again, guys, let's makesure that we get those mushrooms
out of the lawn.
Don't let your dog eat those.
Now, some of them aren't goingto be toxic, aren't going to be
dangerous, but we don't want totake that chance, right?
So I would just steer clear ofany of those.

You can always get yourself a.
You can just search for itonline and get pictures of what
do toxic mushrooms in the yardlook like and then just get rid
of those.
Um, they're not going to hurtyour grass or anything like that
, but it could be toxic to a cator a, a dog.

Um, but again, we want you toadd things that have the biggest
bang for the buck.
The biggest bang for the buck,right?
And that's why we only carrycertain supplements.
We don't carry every supplementout there.
The ones that we carry are verypowerful, very potent, very

So, yeah, if you want to addsomething to your dog's food,
yeah, if you want to addsomething to your dog's food,
let's add some mushrooms,mushrooms, and I dare say you
could probably take theseyourself.
