🔥 Ngā mihi nui ki a koutou katoa, nau mai hoki mai ki te kaupapa kōrero Real Talk.
I am honoured to share this kōrero with Jan from Porirua Women’s Centre. Jan has been a social worker for 25 years, starting off in a rangatahi prison in Christchurch, she then moved to London, England and was a Youth Justice Social Worker, then she worked as a drug councillor in Dublin, Ireland for 2 years, before moving back to Porirua and continuing her mahi.
Jan was driven to Social work by her desire to help others with a similar upbringing to her. We spoke about the best ways to communicate with our rangatahi in need in a way that they feel safe enough to actually open up and have that conversation about not being okay, or things not being good at home.
We spoke about Maslow’s Hierarchy Of Needs:
TOP TO BOTTOM:
TIER 5 (TOP): SELF-ACTUALIZATION
The desire to become the most that one can be
TIER 4: ESTEEM
Respect, self-esteem, status, recognition, strength, freedom
TIER 3: LOVE AND BELONGING
Friendship, intimacy, family, sense of connection
TIER 2: SAFETY NEEDS
Personal security, employment, resources, health, property
TIER 1 (BOTTOM): PHYSIOLOGICAL NEEDS
Air, water, food, shelter, sleep, clothing, reproduction
