On this episode of The Recovery Circle we sat with Ed Y., born in Iran, grew up in Bethpage, Long Island. His family fled Iran during the 1979 revolution and moved in with relatives on Long Island. Ed struggled with language and cultural barriers, feeling different and finding it hard to fit in. At 15, he stole a liquor bottle from his father and brought it to a party, where he felt noticed for the first time. Known as the party guy in high school, Ed's father urged him to make something of his life, leading him to attend community college.

Ed's substance abuse escalated as he connected with a cousin who was a dealer. After quitting college, he found a job on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, excelling in both his career and his substance abuse. Married at 35, Ed witnessed the 9/11 attacks firsthand, an experience that haunted him for years. His drug use and self-centered behavior strained his marriage, leading to its end.

Through many ups and downs, Ed recognized a pattern of self-destruction he could no longer endure. He sought help in a 12-step program, learning the importance of gratitude and honesty in recovery. With the support of men willing to guide him, Ed recently celebrated one year clean & sober.
