Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello and welcome to
the Rested and Rich Real Estate
Agent.
As you may have noticed, I'mmodifying the name of this
podcast a bit and adding in theword rich.
(00:22):
You may be wondering why.
If you know me at all, then youknow that this decision doesn't
pertain to just money, butreally to the richness in all
areas of our lives.
And I'm also asking thequestion really, what does rich
mean to you?
Many of you may be familiar withRamit Sethi.
He's a financial coach.
He published a book severalyears ago called I Will Teach
(00:45):
you to Be Rich.
I think had a blog with asimilar name and talks a lot and
has a Netflix series as well.
Anyway, he says a rich life iswhat it is that's important to
you, and, of course, thatinvolves money, because we live
in a society that takes money tosurvive.
(01:06):
We don't live in a barter-onlysociety.
So rich and what that means toyou is the direction this
podcast is heading in.
But beyond that, I want toexplore what richness looks like
to you.
The word rich can be a loadedone, and it can bring up a lot
of different thoughts andfeelings for many of us, and so
that's what I want to take acouple minutes to talk through
(01:28):
what rich means to me in thecontext, in how I'm using it in
this podcast.
Especially in our industry, there's images of financially
rich real estate agentsflaunting showy cars, designer
shoes and bags splashed all overreality TV, social media,
luxury marketing packages, etc.
(01:49):
Which not only leaves theconsumer maybe feeling a little
bit icky about what real estateagents do with their commission,
how they spend it, but oftenleaves many of us in the
industry feeling like there'sthis constant need to keep up
with what the flashier agentsout there on social media are
doing.
So I think it's important todefine what does rich mean to
(02:13):
you?
And it's the same question Isat with when I thought about
modifying the name of thispodcast.
So I'd like you to notice thatwhen you spend money and
exchange it for goods andservices, there's an exchange of
value, but there's also anexchange of energy as well.
Sometimes giving our money toothers feels good, like
(02:36):
charitable contributions, buyingsomething nice for someone you
love, and it feels solid andjoyful and you feel certain in
the money that you spent inexchange for the product or
services you got.
Other times, our money spendingis neutral right, we don't
really care one way or the otherand we just move on with our
day.
And, of course, other times, spending money feels terrible,
(03:00):
like when you have to pay aparking fine or a late fee or
something of that ilk.
When we think about this ideaof living a rich life,
especially when, as more andmore of us are doing, is having
conversations with our clientsabout our pay structure, our
commission structure, what Iwant for you, when your clients
(03:21):
pay you, is for them to feelenriched by the experience of
interaction they had with you.
I want them to feel richer forit, right, I want them to feel
that they not only got top-notch, top-level service and skills,
but that you had care andconcern for their needs as well,
that the money exchange theyhad with you was well worth the
(03:44):
actual dollars they paid, because you can pay someone to
do a job, but you can't reallypay people to care.
I think we've all had theexperience of going out to eat
and having a waiter who'sattentive and thoughtful and
actually seems to want you tohave a good experience, even
though they may be tipped orbeing paid the same amount as
someone who isn't so invested inyour experience and is not as
(04:07):
thoughtful or attentive to youduring your meal.
You may end up paying the sameamount or similar for both
experiences and that person maywalk away with the same kind of
tip, but the experience and whatyou felt is different, right?
The money exchange or theenergy?
The money exchange may havebeen the same, but the energy
exchange was different.
So what's the feeling that youwant your clients to have when
(04:29):
they're done interacting withyou?
You're building your rich life, which means, for a lot of us,
time with our loved ones, timeto rest, time to engage in
hobbies and put our attention tomore creative endeavors.
Often, for a lot of us, ourreward for work is often not
(04:50):
that we want more work, we wantrest and we want a break.
Join me as we build a life thatis both rested and rich.
Thank you for joining me onthis podcast.
We're going to end this episodewith a short meditation on what
a rich life looks like to youand what experience it is that
you want your clients to have.
(05:12):
Settle in, take a deep breath in, exhale out.
Do that again Deep breath in,exhale with an audible sigh.
Just notice if there'stightness in your jaw.
(05:35):
Exhale in your face, in yourforehead.
You're not even trying tochange anything, you're just
simply noticing.
Now I want you to think ofsomething that comes to your
mind pretty quickly.
I want you to think ofsomething that, when you think
(05:56):
of it, it brings a sense ofwarmth to your heart.
It brings a sense of warmth toyour heart.
Maybe it's a person or ananimal or a place you are.
Bring that memory into yourmind and paint in some of the
(06:18):
detail in this memory.
Right, paint in some of thetexture and some of the finer
details of this particularmemory.
Who was there?
What was the environment youwere in?
Was it warm, cold?
Was it daytime, nighttime?
What were you wearing?
(06:40):
What were you wearing?
What might?
Have you been eating ordrinking?
If there's food involved, couldyou feel warm air or cool air
on your skin?
And just fill in this warmmemory of the situation you were
in and note the richness ofthis memory.
(07:03):
Now, if I had to guess, I don'tthink any of you would have
brought to mind thoughts ofactual dollar bills.
It's more so what those dollarbills allow you to do so, for
example, I'll share an exampleof mine.
(07:29):
For me, I thought of a quiet, still morning with my pup and my
morning cup of tea.
Think about for you whatcomponents in your life had to
fall into place to allow you tohave that warm moment that you
did For me.
When I'm thinking about thiswarm memory of me with my pup
and my tea, several things hadto fall in place for me to be
(07:49):
able to have that One.
I had to have the money to buythe tea, right?
So here we are talking againabout the exchange of money for
goods.
I had to have the money andtime to feed and care for my pup
, to make sure he's in goodhealth and, you know, living his
best life.
I had to buy and acquire themug that I'm drinking the tea
(08:13):
out of, and you can take thisexercise quite a way, right?
So if you're thinking aboutbeing on vacation, you probably
paid money to go on thatvacation and a plane or a car or
some method of transportationthat you paid for took you there
.
It's the money that allowed youto have that experience, to
(08:36):
have that warm memory in thatmoment.
So, connecting to what the moneyallows us to do in order to
live our rich life is where ourwork is right.
It's also why I felt likeadding that to the name of this
podcast made sense.
I want you to be rested, but Ialso want you to have a rich
(08:59):
life, right?
I want the benefit ofmindfulness practices to lead
you to have a rich life, right.
I want the benefit ofmindfulness practices to lead
you to have a life that is fulland rich and textured and
layered, and juicy and flavorful.
So go back to that memory thatyou brought up of warmth and
(09:32):
think about all those differentcomponents that allowed you to
have that moment.
Maybe to pay a dog sitter todog sit your dog so you could go
on a trip no-transcript again.
That took money, it took time,it took attention, and those are
(09:56):
the pieces of the rich lifethat drives us to do our
business right.
A lot of us love real estate, welove the act of helping people
find homes and we like what themoney can do for us.
Take a couple cycles of breathto sit with this rich, warm
(10:24):
memory and how you created thatfor yourself, and how many many
other people unknown to you helpyou create that Right.
You didn't design the car thattook you to this vacation.
I didn't design the mug thatheld my tea, and as much as we
(10:47):
are individuals in our businessand our lives.
We're also very interdependentand our richness individually
affects the collective, as doesthe collective right.
If everyone around us is doingwell, hopefully we are too, and
hopefully we want that for ourcommunity and the people around
us, not just the people we knowand that are our family, but
(11:11):
also our neighbors and ourcommunity outside of our door
and down our street and on ourblock and in our city.
So take a couple breaths withthat On your next exhale.
You can let that memory go andjust return to your body,
(11:38):
sitting here in this moment, this next breath entering your
nose, the warmth of it, thetemperature of it, and then just
(11:59):
exhaling.
