upcoming interview with the
owner of Hazard CleanRestoration.
As we explore the aftermath ofhurricane damage, join us to
uncover the risk, preventivemeasures and expert insight in
mitigating the mold growth aftera hurricane strike.
Welcome back everyone.
This is Garfield Bowen, co-host, slash producer of the show.
(00:45):
Back in the studio with ChadMaloney, chad.
How are you doing today?
Doing great, garfield.
Doing great Happy to be here.
So Chad, can hurricane damagecause mold?
Speaker 3 (00:59):
Yeah, you know,
actually you know it can with.
We have hurricanes, you knowyou have water, that that can
enter in various ways.
But a lot of times youexperience flooding events.
You know, I'll tell you, when Iwas over, when Hurricane Ian
hit the West Coast, you hadhomes where the ocean basically
(01:20):
just went through the entirehome, basically just went
through the entire home.
And when you think about that, you know you're having all this
different water that's coming infrom outside and you know it's
carrying all different pathogensyou know bacteria, viruses, all
these different pathogens andthat's bringing it into your
home.
And so once it's in your home, even if you try to just dry it
(01:43):
out and everything, even if youtry to just dry it out and
everything, a lot of thosehazardous items or pathogens and
everything can actually lingerpast that.
And so what happens is whenwater intrudes, you really need
to get an experienced wetrestoration team in there,
(02:05):
really need to get a experiencedrestoration team in there, and
they're not only going to, youknow, take care of making sure
that whatever items wereaffected and you know that your
structure of your home, you know, is dried out correctly, but
they're also going to address, you know those health risks to
those pathogens and you knowpotentially, you know the
viruses and bacteria andeverything else and make sure
that those are addressed as well.
(02:25):
So you know potentially, youknow the viruses and bacteria
and everything else and makesure that those are addressed as
well.
So you know it's amulti-layered and multifaceted
approach and it's important, especially when it comes to
hurricane water that's intruding, you know, especially if it's a
groundwater or a flooding eventthat occurs in your home.
Speaker 2 (02:45):
How does?
High humidity affectseverything.
Well, humidity.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
So mold loves
humidity, loves humid
environments, loves it here inFlorida, and so you know you
have a really humid environmentwhere there's been a lot of
water saturation around and youknow that that helps, uh, it
creates a positive environmentfor that mold to to grow and,
(03:12):
and you know if you, when thehumidity is lower, it makes it
more difficult for the mold, butwhen that humidity is super
high, that's a great environmentfor the, for the grow, and we
build our houses basically outof organic materials, so mold
uses that as a food source andthen it has the humidity and the
(03:33):
dampness that it uses as well, and when it has both of those,
that is almost a perfectenvironment for that mold to
grow at a rapid pace.
For that mold to grow at arapid pace and unfortunately,
you know, in our homes, if wedon't address it, we can have
our entire homes, you know, basically taken over by mold
(03:53):
very quickly, a lot quicker thanwe would think?
Speaker 2 (03:55):
I mean, we all know
mold is bad, but could you shed
some light on what are some ofthe real health concerns with
molds?
Speaker 3 (04:02):
It's a great question
.
It's a very complex questionbecause there's so many
different species and everything.
But, to simplify it, the moldhas the mold spores that it uses
to basically spread and tofight off of the molds and
(04:23):
bacteria.
On those spores there's what'scalled mycotoxins and those
toxins are kind of like almostlike chemical warfare between
the molds and everything else.
Well, the issue is, once that isin your home and the mold will
use that to do what it does innature, as we are inside our
(04:46):
homes, as we're bringing thatbreathing in those, you know,
spores, those mycotoxins and, umthe it at a high, you know the
levels will continue to increaseas the mold, uh, you know
colonies increase and as webreathe, that breathe, that in
it can really impact our healthvery negatively.
You know, a lot of times itjust starts with some basic
(05:07):
allergies and then it cancontinue to get worse.
Where it really impacts yourbreathing, your respiratory
breathing, it can impact youknow there's molds that impact
your liver, your kidneys, youknow, and so it really becomes a
serious health concern.
And that's why you know it'sensure you have someone that's
(05:34):
like state licensed and knowswhat they're doing when it comes
to mold and hiring them andmaking sure when they come in,
they're going to make sure thatthey check everywhere and make
it safe for your families, andthat's what's important.
Speaker 2 (05:44):
So I guess if you
have water damage after a
hurricane, you got to get helpand the right help.
You know that has a clean helpright.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
Yes, garfield Listen
love it.
Speaker 2 (05:56):
You have a wonderful
rest of the day.
You too, take care.
