Speaker 2 (00:14):
Here's your host and
owner of Hazard Clean
Restoration, Chad Melody diveinto the depth of a particularly
challenging water damagerestoration project with the
expert at hazard cleanrestoration.
Welcome back everyone.
This is garfield bowen, co-hostslash producer, back in the
(00:38):
studio with chad maloney.
How you doing today, chad I'mdoing great Garfield.
Doing great.
So, Chad, could you share aparticular challenging water
damage restoration project whichyou handled and how you
overcame it?
Speaker 3 (00:55):
Particularly
challenging.
So there's a lot of challengingones that we've run into that
we've run into One that sticksout, I'll just say, from
challenge because it ended upbeing a good, positive and good
learning for everyone.
(01:15):
But you know, we had a, I think, a water damage project that we
ran into and it ended up being, you know, pretty pretty kind of
normal initially, and then weran into a little area of it
that we were.
We were kind of trying tofigure out what was going on,
(01:37):
and so initially it was like itwas a pipe you know, one of
those copper pipes that sprung aleak and ended up getting into
the wall cavities.
All the water got into twodifferent rooms, and so we got
called in.
We had a local plumber came out, they went ahead and fixed the
(01:58):
leak.
So we were good, we didn't haveany more water intruding into
the building.
We were able to kind of deviseour drying plan and we started
and at first everything wasgoing as scheduled.
You know, all the impactedmaterials were drying,
everything was going as planned.
(02:18):
And then we noticed that someareas all of a sudden weren't
really drying as effective asthey should have been and some
areas all of a sudden, weren'treally drying as effective as
they should have been and someareas were actually retaining
water.
And so we really had to call atimeout and reassess.
Because when we're dryingmaterials, typically they go as
(02:40):
scheduled and our drying plansare based on math and science,
they're not based on hopes anddreams.
We don't just stick somemachines in there or whichever
and just call it a day.
I mean, it's all based on mathand science and you know when
materials aren't dryingeffectively yet, you have to
(03:01):
really try to take a timeout andtry to get to the bottom of it.
And so what we actually figuredout?
It was two key areas there arechallenges I should say that we
ran into, and the first one wasthat that pipe in a little
different area spraying anotherleak and it was a really, really
(03:22):
small pinhole leak, but it wasenough to start adding,
obviously, some moisture to thatwall cavity.
And, uh, you know when, whenyou repair, especially copper
pipes, when you repair them, uh,if they're older copper pipes,
that does happen at timesbecause you know the there's a
pressure from the copper pipe.
Uh, when it first leaks, it'sreleasing that pressure.
(03:43):
So, uh, the, the, that oldcopper pipe can hold the
integrity because it has thatlittle leak.
When you repair that now thepressure inside that pipe goes
back up and at times it canspring another leak somewhere,
and so that this is whatoccurred on this job site.
And so we brought another, brought a plumber and he fixed
that leak.
So we brought another plumberin to fix that leak.
(04:04):
So we were good there.
We figured out that, but wecouldn't figure out why some of
the materials in different areasthat weren't associated with
the area with the leak weren'tdrying the way they should have
been drying.
Speaker 2 (04:21):
Chad, let me
interrupt you for a second.
Okay, let's bring this home alittle bit.
How long did it take you tofind out that there was a leak?
Speaker 3 (04:33):
How long?
I mean, it took a good couplehours.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
Talk about those
times that you couldn't figure
out.
How did it make you feel?
Speaker 3 (04:44):
Well, you know you're
trying to figure it out with
math and science, right?
So you're trying to recalculateeverything and try to.
You know you're scratching yourbrain because nothing is, you
know, drying the way it shouldbe, and so, yeah, it's
definitely frustrating.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Yeah, that's
something I just wanted to,
because that's the pivotal point.
You know.
I mean not knowing could reallydrive you crazy.
So how did the project end up?
Speaker 3 (05:13):
Well, we ended up
drying it.
What ended up occurring withthe other materials that weren't
associated with the leak?
The property owner was turningoff the air movers before they
went to bed because they weredriving them crazy so they could
sleep.
And so we?
We didn't know that, becauseevery time we showed up all the
(05:34):
equipment was running and uh,and so that was what was causing
the other issue.
And so we explained that that'sjust going to cause this to
take a lot longer to dry.
And uh, it was.
It was a good aha moment forthat property owner and we dried
it.
We hit all of our dry standards.
It ended up being definitely asuccessful project.
(05:57):
But we had some headaches inbetween.
That we were obviously able tofigure out.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
So you got the job
done again, huh Chad.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
We did.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
Okay, good stuff,
great story listen.
You had a wonderful rest of theday.
We'll see you in the nextepisode.
