Retirement isn’t just a logistical change — it’s an emotional one. The routines fade, the job titles disappear, and the calendar opens up. That newfound space can feel freeing… but also a little unsettling. 

Practicing gratitude helps anchor us through this transition. It reminds us of what’s constant, what’s meaningful, and what we often overlook. 

Why Gratitude Matters Even More Now 

For the first time in decades, retirement gives us time — time to slow down, reflect, and actually notice our lives. When the deadlines and noise drop away, what remains? 

  • The people who shaped us
  • The friends who supported us
  • The family who lifted us up
  • The moments we rushed through on the way to somewhere else

Retirement lets us finally see those things clearly — if we choose to look.

A Thanksgiving Reminder 

Thanksgiving isn’t just about food (though no complaints there).
 It’s a built-in pause button — a moment to look around the table, literal or symbolic, and think: “Wow. I’m lucky.” 

And here’s the truth:  In retirement, every day can be Thanksgiving. It’s not about the holiday — it’s about the mindset. 

Your Weekend Gratitude Challenge 

Before Monday arrives, try this simple exercise: 

  1. Write down three things you’re grateful for — anything, big or small.
  2. Share one of them with someone you care about.

Gratitude multiplies when it’s expressed. Gratitude isn’t just a feeling —
It’s a practice, an expression, and a powerful tool for shaping this stage of life.

That's what I like to do.
So here we go for TGIF! Welcometo another Five Minute Friday.
And since we're rolling withthis Thanksgiving theme, today I
kind of felt like the perfectmoment to pause, breathe, talk

about that exact powerful forcewe have in retirement:
gratitude, and how to express itto others that you love, you
care for, your friends, yourfamily, those you work with
still, if you have some kind ofa group you're part of and
volunteering, whatever thatmight be.

One of the biggest transitionswe face in retirement isn't
logistical, it's emotional.
Your routines change, thetitles fall away, the calendar
opens up, right?
And for a lot of us, that bigempty space can feel a little
unsettling.
Us empty nesters may also findour families spread across

different regions of the countryor even the world and harder to
get together during theholidays.
So even if we're excited aboutretirement, even if we chose
this path, it's still a shift.
But gratitude is the practice ofnoticing what's good.

It's what helps anchor usthrough this transition into
retirement.
There's something incrediblygrounding I find about
retirement.
For me, you know, it's thefirst time in decades that I
have the mind space to examinemy life with clarity instead of
urgency.
And when you strip away allthat noise, the busyness, the

deadlines, you know, what's leftfor us in our lives?
The relationships, right?
The memories, the moments wesped through on our way to
something else.
The people who shaped us, thefriends who have stuck by us,
the family who cheered us on,and sometimes held us together.

Retirement has given me the timeto really see all of that, but
it's only there if we choose tolook.
Thanksgiving isn't just turkeyand gravy, though I'm absolutely
not opposed to either one, as Iproved last night.
I certainly had my fill at afriend's house.
And I just want to remindeveryone to stop the momentum of

everyday life.
Look around the table, whetherthat table last night was
literal or figurative, and justtake this weekend to say to
ourselves, wow, I'm lucky.
And the beautiful thing thatI'm finding in retirement is
every day can be Thanksgiving,right?

If you want it to be, itdoesn't require a holiday.
Just that retired mindset,correct?
And here's what I'm grateful forright now, this weekend.
My community that I've created,my family, my incredible
friends, the groups that I'vebecome a part of in retirement,
and of course, all youmindsetters tuning in every

week.
I've found new purpose inretirement, the ability to wake
up each day and decide how Iwant to contribute, not only to
my own life and to those that Ilove and my friends, but also
back to community.
I find nature to be anincredible hero and mammoth when
the world goes quiet andgratitude gets loud.

And also I've got to just takea moment and be thankful for my
health because none of thismeans anything without it.
And then also the journey thatI've been on, the ups, the
downs, the unexpected turns thatbrought me here.
That's all part of getting tothis point where I can retire,
look back, appreciate it, begrateful, and show that level of

thanks and gratitude to thosearound me.
When I take a few minutes eachmorning to acknowledge those
blessings, the whole day changesfor me.
I show up a little differently.
I'm a little softer.
I'm a little more in themoment, perhaps more grounded,
and trying to be also moreemotionally available.

So here's a Thanksgivingchallenge to each of you.
Try this this weekend if youcan.
If not, when you get around toit next week, whatever it might
be.
Pick three things you'regrateful for, big or small,
whether it's something orsomebody, and write them down.
Then please take that out andshare one with someone you care

Because gratitude grows whenit's expressed, and you will
reach out to others to touchthem with your positivity.

The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
