Speaker 1 (00:11):
Welcome to the Ritual
Nurse, where healing meets
humor, science and a touch ofmagic.
We made it Through anothershift, through another season,
and not just a season of nursingBestie.
I'm talking about this seasonof the Ritual Nurse.
(00:32):
Welcome to our season onefinale, the Debrief.
This is our wrap-up report.
It's our sacred shift sign-out.
It's our sacred shift sign out.
It's definitely our invitationto exhale.
This inaugural season has been ajourney not just of survival
(00:53):
but of awakening.
We've been learning how torecognize our own needs, our own
voice, how to buildself-awareness voice, how to
build self-awareness, how tocreate ritual not just as a vibe
but as a clinical tool of realself-care.
A place where we could exploretrauma science and healing layer
(01:20):
by layer, layer by layer.
A safe space.
A place lined with intentional, crafted ritual by the very
people who resuscitate othersfor a living now learning how to
(01:43):
bring themselves back from thedead.
We didn't just talk aboutself-care.
We activated shadow work.
We crossed that threshold.
We brought evidence-basedtrauma healing into sacred,
doable, daily practice.
So, whether you've been heresince episode one or you're
joining today for the first time, this is your regular reminder
(02:05):
that you are allowed to heal, you are allowed to come first
I'm Reva, nurse educator, witchyhealer and fire starter, and
today we're reflecting on whatwe felt and what's next.
Let's do one final round.
(02:28):
These aren't just podcastepisodes.
These were protocols that wecreated, like psychological PPE,
if you will.
Let's go over some of our coreskills, the ones nurses remarked
on the most.
Let's go over what they are,how they work and why we use
them.
(02:50):
Code blue to code you.
This one has been reallysignificant.
This is where we teach you torecognize the signs Heart
pounding you.
To recognize the signs.
Heart pounding, overwhelm, building that tightness in the
back of your throat.
Colors start to get brighterand instead of just powering
(03:15):
through or panicking through it,you call a code blue to code
you.
You're going to pause, you'regoing to put a name to the
emergency that you're feelingand then you're going to breathe
, you're going to stabilize, before continuing by grounding
(03:36):
yourself with either sense, workor maybe with a mantra.
Why?
Because you are worth the code.
You have to be able to functionthrough the emergency, whether
it's a literal code blue or apersonal life crisis, our
(04:00):
experienced trauma affects everyspace we move in, and calling a
code blue to code yourself is away to force yourself to stop
and critically focus on what ishappening with yourself and
address it in a space-limited,limited timeframe to curb the
(04:29):
overwhelm and give you aproductivity tool, a processing
tool to step through it andcontinue functioning.
The IV push skill this one's forour kinesthetic healers.
You're going to have your palmsflat against a surface, or
(04:49):
maybe each other.
You're going to inhale throughyour nose and at the same time
you're going to press your palmstogether or against the surface
, flexing those muscles withintensity.
Then you're going to exhaleslowly through your mouth and,
at the same time, slowly releasethe muscle tension or pressure.
(05:09):
This is going to bring you backto your body.
It's tactile, it's fast, it'svagus, nerve stimulating
andsaving in a clinicalenvironment.
I use it all the time.
The CARE skill is an initialstep or part of a two-skill
(05:35):
process.
You don't always have to usetwo skills, but it's step one of
that dual approach.
Care stands for checking in,acknowledging, reminding
yourself that you're safe andthen executing the next thing on
your list that you can control.
(05:57):
This is a mental triage toolwhen, let's say, your shift is
spiraling and you're swallowingyour own pain to stay functional
, or you're in personal lifesituations where you're feeling
wildly unbalanced or overwhelmedor stuck in freeze, stuck in
(06:24):
freeze.
This care skill can beimplemented anywhere, anytime,
and it is a great mental skilland exercise to really get into
muscle memory as a way to buildthat emotional intelligence and
self-awareness that allows youto debrief effectively and
(06:47):
functionally the next part ofthis, the trauma aspect of this.
This is for after the shift, this is for after the moment,
the experience.
This is an extension of thecare scale.
Experience.
This is an extension of thecare scale.
(07:08):
You're going to tell the story.
You're going to physicallyreset, if you need to, as many
times as you need to.
While you debrief and tell andrelate that story, you're going
to acknowledge your role.
You're going to uncover yourneeds in the moment.
You're going to make meaningout of what you experienced and
(07:33):
then activate healing by settinga tangible goal or giving
yourself permission to feel orrelease what you need to.
Then you utilize the care skillright on the heels of that, and
this can be done in as manysegments or parts as you need to
.
Sometimes the trauma is bigenough that we have to do it in
bite-sized pieces.
Other times, just simply movingthrough the acronym is enough
(07:59):
to process it and physicallyrelease the emotions and the
physical response associatedwith the event that happened.
So the whole purpose of thisskill set, the combined skill
set, allows us to reprogram in adebriefing pattern the physical
and emotional responses to boththe context, the psychological
(08:23):
stimulation, the emotionalstimulation of the event that
happened.
The next thing is the list.
This saved my life.
This is not an exaggeration.
It's a modern, modifiedEisenhower matrix that I created
yes, next pass and goodbye.
(08:43):
As an ADHDer and aneurodivergent dealing with
overwhelming amounts of stress,I needed a type of Eisenhower
matrix that actually prompted mystep action.
So yes is 24 hours, next is 48to 72 hours.
Pass, delegate it and goodbyeis releasing it.
(09:03):
It's how I survived nursingschool, divorce, single
parenting, the pandemic gradschool, sustaining community
organizations and businessessimultaneously while working
full-time, and now the finalstretch of two terminal degrees,
while still working full-timeand still sustaining community
(09:26):
organization and business.
The system doesn't justorganize tasks.
It saves energy, time andactual sanity by literally
lowering cognitive load anddecreasing stress.
You can find this tool on ourwebsite if you don't already
have your free copies.
(09:53):
I've also made about 30 otherdesigned versions with the
coolest fun patterns.
It's incredible, and everysingle one of them I hand
designed myself from scratch andput them in two different
notepad size formats.
I'm also working on a magneticversion and I've created PDF
versions of every single patternfor all of my digital
note-taking besties out therethat are like me.
(10:14):
I go everywhere with my iPadpro and pencil keeps the paper
clutter down.
As a ADHD neurodivergent, I'mthe type that the less clutter I
have, the less air quotes, alarm fatigue that I have for
all the sticky notes and papers.
So the paper version works likeamazingly by your bedside
(10:36):
because it's not a digitaldevice, so you won't doom scroll
, you won't pick it up and getdistracted by notifications that
then lead you to doom scrolling.
The paper version, I meanincluding the aesthetic and some
of them being absolutelystunning, some of them being
super fun, some of them beingsnarky and some of them being
(10:59):
absolutely beautiful andminimalist.
But the paper version keeps yougrounded.
It's perfect for the bedside,it's perfect for right next to
your coffee pot, your tea kettle, whatever it may be.
Wherever you craft that initialor closing, you know five to 10
minutes of ritual space foryourself.
You, it's not a digital device,it's just paper, so you can put
(11:23):
pen to paper and then you canset it down and it serves its
perfect function in that regard, and the digital version is
perfect for those of us that dodigital planning and need that
list on hand to create ourreminders by, to fill in our
calendars, by to do our digitalplanning by.
(11:45):
It works perfectly.
The last one that seemed to geta lot of traction as a core
skill is step.
Step stands for stop, take abreath, evaluate your next move
and proceed.
And by evaluating your nextmove, this is very um critical
(12:12):
and time intensive.
Your next move is the very nextthing that you can accomplish,
that you have control over andthat you can actually perform.
This is perfect for decisionparalysis, functional freeze,
emotional freeze, fight orflight response.
(12:32):
You don't have to do it all,you just have to take one small
step.
So these are just some of therituals that we've crafted over
this past season.
It's some of the tools that wecarry that we've learned.
Now I really want to tell youwhy this work is so meaningful
(12:55):
to me.
I know early on in the season, you know I discussed some of
this and in a few podcastepisodes throughout the season
I've referred to it and kind of,you know, done a little bit
deeper dives on it, but Istarted researching nurse mental
health in 2020 during a gradsemester.
While finishing a grad semester, while also commuting almost
(13:17):
300 miles a week to work as afrontline COVID nurse, started
this in January of 2020 andbegan commuting right at the end
of February.
I was trying to survive, butalso trying to make sense of the
horror show that nursing hadbecome Medicine was
unrecognizable.
(13:38):
We were trying to save lives ina surreal hellscape and a lot
of us didn't make it.
Not just patients, but usNurses became the walking dead
and somehow we just kept going.
I turned to research.
(14:00):
Thousands of nurses, thousandsand thousands of nurses answered
my survey and over 70% of themdescribed themselves as the
walking wounded Moral injury, physical trauma, suicidality.
When I opened those surveyresults, I cried.
(14:22):
It changed everything.
Results I cried.
It changed everything.
I knew in that moment thatnurses were my patient
population.
It changed my life.
I've spent the last five yearsin this work researching,
healing, building and craftingtools.
(14:47):
I've almost finished with myfamily nurse practitioner and my
doctorate of nursing practice.
The culmination of my researchproject focused specifically on
nursing mental health andresilience is nearing and I've
never been clearer.
I've spent so much time intraining, in academia, in
examining theory after theory, both in psychology, in nursing,
(15:11):
even sociology, and craftingthem, these tools, these learned
lessons, from a nursingperspective in our nursing
context, which is inherently andsignificantly different than
the contextual spaces of so manyothers.
(15:36):
Nursing mental health, I'venoticed, however, has also
become a trend, a marketablehashtag, and yet most of the air
quotes, solutions, are just lipservice.
They're fucking buzzwords in acorporate boardroom trying to
hoodwink nurses into staying intoxic sludge by not actually
(15:59):
telling them anything useful.
No one is actually teaching.
No one's certainly teachingwhat I'm teaching.
First of all, because I createdeverything myself after years
of studying these theories, getting degrees, accumulating
training, revising, revisitingsituations among nursing and
(16:28):
nursing context, with these newperspectives, as I learned them,
as I tested them, as Iresearched them and then turned
the nursing lens and nursingperspective on these things, but
from a standpoint of being real, not just buzzword after
(16:50):
buzzword like some craptasticLinkedIn newsfeed.
It absolutely drives me nuts.
Secondly, it's because my goalis to put you first, us first,
not the profession, not thepatient, and certainly not the
(17:16):
system, not the system, you, usfirst.
No one was showing us how toactually heal, and I decided
that I'm here to end that.
Like I said, I'm not here tomake the system prettier.
I'm not here to package itbetter.
(17:37):
I'm not here to put blinders onnurses.
I am here to keep us alive insuch a manner that how we move
through this system, away fromthis system or into this system,
changes it fundamentallyforever.
I'm going to teach nurses howto put themselves first period,
(17:59):
not to be selfish, because thatisn't selfish, but because if we
don't, we won't be here andwithout us, the whole damn
system collapses.
All right, best.
We're at the midpoint.
(18:20):
Breathe, stretch, sip yourwater, shake it out.
You know what to do.
It's dance break.
New day begins.
I feel cold and heartless.
I've run myself in Like thedistant star.
(18:49):
Have you traveled far?
I miss you in my arms.
You're like my lucky charm.
Are you happy?
You're not loved.
So what's next?
(19:09):
Well, season two is coming inhot More skills, more shadow
work, more healing anddefinitely more of the real.
We have amazing guests lined upfrom nurses and therapists,
healers, professionals doingthings that we didn't know
nursing and health professionscould do.
New skills are coming as wemove towards the launch of the
(19:32):
RISE curriculum resilience,insight, strength and
empowerment.
And by curriculum I meanorganization, vetted standards,
meeting quality and sciencebased curriculum, not some MLM,
ish resale coaching package, rehashed Instagram top 20 list
(19:56):
or watered down feel goodmantras.
As a highly educated nurse, educator and executive, I mean
actual curriculum, like actualtraining and protocols.
Fun note that doesn't soundlike any of those heavy duty,
(20:19):
serious voices.
Like any of those heavy duty, serious voices.
A fun note new merch is here, hand created and crafted by me.
I needed a mental hiatus andkind of rejuvenating mental
space myself over the past fewweeks as I am ramping up
completion of these degrees andramping up completion of my
(20:42):
research project.
So I allowed myself to get backinto that creative, artsy space
that I love so much.
And these are beautiful, sassy, colorfully vibrant, waterproof
and oh so perfect for ourcollective.
A sticker collection.
And if you send me your storyand share your survival
(21:06):
experiences or share how thepodcast has helped you, I'll
send you the entire sticker packfor free.
Also, you can DM your addressor ask for a secret code to grab
one from the website, shippingon me, just depending on which
method you're comfortable with.
And I'm doing this because Iwant to celebrate you, because I
(21:29):
want to hear from you andconnect with you.
I want to showcase you and alsothe thought of these amazing
stickers making their rounds onthe water bottles of the
warriors that are just wagingtheir way through this system.
It just fills me with so muchglee I can't.
(21:52):
Even so, I definitely want toget these packs out to you guys.
You will absolutely love them.
They're waterproof, they'rebadass.
Built for all of us nurses whoneed a little sticker therapy on
our shift bottles, for all ofthe inside voices that we wish
could be really big outsidevoices sometimes.
(22:13):
So, trust me, they're classy, they're beautiful.
Some of them are definitelyquite sassy it would not be the
ritual nurse if they weren't.
And for those who want morethan that, even who want more
than the podcast, the ritualnurse collective is coming.
We're talking private space, deep dives into all of our
(22:37):
favorites skill building, ritualbuilding, community, real,
face-to-face shared space, crafted and significant moments.
This is not general publicaccessible and it never will be.
The real ones will know it ismeant for them and I'll meet you
(23:00):
there.
All right, let's close with ourfavorite segment, one last time
as we end season one Coffee, crystals and divination.
I'll be pulling a divinationcard live, as usual.
This week, I'll put it onTikTok and our reels, and this
time it's going to be atraditional three card spread
(23:21):
for usual.
This week, I'll put it onTikTok and our reels and this
time it's going to be atraditional three card spread
for the first time.
Let me grab the cards.
As you know, we're using ourMoonstruck Crystals for both our
tarot the Crystal Struck Tarotand our Crystal Portal Oracle
for when we do our incrediblecrystal prescription.
(23:43):
But this season deserves areflection and a transition into
the next.
So let's get to shuffling.
And I almost I literally justtold you that I was going to
record it and then almostcompletely forgot to turn on the
recording.
So hold please while I keep myword and set it up here, okay,
(24:12):
so?
So let's do this.
So we're going to do a threecard spread and go over what the
message is, both about thefirst season, our takeaway, our
incredible transition into thenext season.
(24:32):
Oh, what do you know?
And three of them flipped rightout Unbelievable, all right.
So, and of course, I set myrecording up on the book that I
(24:58):
needed.
Sorry about the mic noise there, okay.
So, first one that we pulled oh,this is.
This is really giving me theemotional bracketing around some
pretty significant, uh,financial and growth.
(25:23):
Oh, this is, this is going tobe.
Hmm.
Okay, our first one is thethree of cups and it's turquoise
friendship celebration joy.
Turquoise signifiescommunication, friendship and
strength.
It's exactly the foundation ofwhat we've built over this past
first season.
Celebrate good times, come on.
(25:45):
Hmm, I have a reallyinteresting story for the
collective about that firstsentence.
When this card appears, takethis as a sign of encouragement
to spend some quality time andcelebrate with your close
friends and family, to lift yourspirit.
This entire first season hasreally been us building that
(26:07):
collective and that connectionand community, and so I can't
think of anything more aproposthan celebrating it.
The next one is the nine ofpentacles, and when I read um, I
do so intuitively, of course, but I think it's really
important to always include theartwork and the message that the
(26:30):
tarot cards were crafted andcreated with, because it is part
of it is part of them as a tool.
So the next one is the nine ofpentacles and bumblebee jasper.
The nine of pentacles signifiesfinancial independence, comfort
, gratitude.
The bumblebee jasper iscelebration, positive attitude
(26:54):
and abundance.
Treat yourself.
You worked so hard to createall of this abundance in your
life.
Literally, is that not perfectfor where we've arrived at at
the end of this first season?
So don't be afraid to splurgeand enjoy the fruits of your
labor.
Celebrate your achievements.
You deserve it, you do.
(27:15):
You've put yourself first.
You've done so much incredibledeep shadow work and some of
this is really hard.
You deserve to celebrate thosewins.
All right, our third in thespread.
We're heading back to cups, andit's the 10 of cups and spirit
(27:37):
courts and, as we look towardsseason two, this is incredible.
The 10 of cups is happiness, relationships and reunion.
Spirit courts is unity, harmonyand spiritual growth.
Life is good.
The 10 of cups embodies joy andharmony, especially in domestic
(27:59):
and family relationships.
Take a moment to appreciate andshare the love with those that
are close to you.
Collective we are so.
We are so coming back to it,growing and getting stronger.
I'm going to definitely show thebeautiful cards of our three
(28:19):
card spread and now we are on toour crystal of the week.
While I'm shuffling that, I'mgoing to talk about our coffee
and it's our aesthetic.
I mean, really it's got to besomething bold, something
(28:40):
unbothered and it's somethingthat you want to take your time
making.
I'm just trying to make surethat all the cards here are
facing the right way.
We're also going to pull alegendary three card spread here
as well and get a reallypowerful crystal excuse me trio
(29:00):
prescription to just lighteverything up.
Well, that one came out.
And when it comes to our coffee, I think it's really important
to highlight, at the end of theseason, the whole meaning and
significance behind this part ofthe segment.
(29:22):
Yes, it's tongue in cheek, it'sfun.
I love the whole.
You know crafting, specialdrinks and special treats.
This one looks like it's readyto come out, but honestly, it's
about creating space.
It's about giving you a focalpoint to create space around,
because oftentimes we neglectourselves, because we don't
(29:48):
allow ourselves to become afocal point, and so if we take a
habitual action like creating adrink, we enjoy crafting space
around a time frame to enjoythat drink.
Whether it's hydration, whetherit's coffee, tea, a sweet treat
, our favorite fizzy water, whatever it is, doesn't matter.
(30:08):
We are creating and craftingspace.
I thought that one was jumpingout for a second, but it's not.
We're waiting for one more card, but we're creating and
crafting space.
That is intentional, and so thepurpose of this is to give you
guys kind of.
You know, it's like writingprompts, but this is ritual
(30:29):
prompts, this is you spaceprompts in giving you ideas and
hints and fun things to focus onas you create that focal point.
But every single podcast thatwe go over we're reminding you
that.
Oh, and there's the last one,we're reminding you that you're
worth creating a focal point, you are worth being a focal
(30:50):
point.
And that habitual act ofcreating that drink, that space,
that time is really important.
Okay, these are so beautifuland I really have to laugh.
The first one is focus and it'sfluorite.
Now, those of you that know meknow I am a fluorite queen.
(31:13):
We are not going to talk aboutthe sheer amount of fluorite
that I have in my home.
I collected the ones that arebeautiful.
Ocean colors, again, those ofyou that know me are kind of
snickering right now becausemermaid um, my Jeep is a mermaid
.
I'm actually even wearingfluorite right now.
(31:34):
Of course I am Um, but fluoriteis very.
I gravitate towards it.
I gravitate towards it like asiren would gravitate towards
the ocean.
Um, and fluorite as a focus, asignifying focus, is for mental
clarity, intellect andconcentration.
Snap out of that daydream, honey, because the focus card is
(31:56):
here to whip your scatteredmind into shape.
Time to clear out the brain fogand ditch the endless doom
scrolling and zoom in on whattruly matters.
No distractions allowed.
This is your moment to put yourhead down and focus on what you
know you should be doing rightnow.
This card has got to be likethe singular focus of the entire
(32:19):
first season as I drop it onthe camera, the entire first
season of the ritual nursepodcast like this.
This paragraph that I just readjust summarized the entire
episode into one brief, sassymoment of me yelling at you,
epic.
The next one is radiance andit's an agate.
(32:42):
So let's see here.
This is absolutely gorgeous.
It's almost kind of like aslice of agate.
This signifies confidence,courage and grounding.
The radiant energy of agate andthe empowering warmth of the
(33:03):
sun symbolize a profound momentof self-discovery and confidence
.
This card signifies atransformative journey towards
embracing your inner radianceand finding the courage to shine
brightly.
Just as agate brings groundingand stability, allowing you to
find balance and harmony within, the sun's light illuminates the
path to self-assurance andbelief in your own abilities.
(33:26):
Welcome this moment of radiance.
Trust in your inner strengthand step into the light with
confidence and grace, knowingthat you are supported by the
universe on your journey towardsfulfillment, that you are
supported by the universe onyour journey towards fulfillment
.
This card perfectlyencapsulates this transition
(33:48):
moment of us stepping from theseason one into season two and
kind of where we stand in thismoment.
Absolutely perfect and again,I'm so glad I did this on camera
.
The last one is exploration.
It's serpentine.
Oftentimes, whenever we arerock shopping which we're not
(34:08):
going to discuss how often thathappens, but when we're rock
shopping I see these serpentinestones and they're usually
formed in like eggs andsometimes towers, but they
always remind me of dragon eggs.
Um, so let's discover what thishas to say.
(34:29):
I don't think we've pulled thisbefore.
So exploration, serpentine, newbeginnings, resilience and
independence.
I'm showing the camera becauseI this.
I'm so glad that I did this oncamera.
It couldn't be more perfect.
Pack your bags and get ready forthe adventure of a lifetime.
(34:49):
This card invites you to scalenew heights with a spirit of
independence, curiosity andresilience.
Because of its deep connectionto the earth, serpentine
enhances your bond with theenergy of nature that surrounds
you.
So bring your sense ofadventure, explore your
surroundings, open your heart tonew opportunities and navigate
life's twists and turns withdetermination, much like
(35:13):
conquering a grand mountainmountain.
Well, that is an epic crystalprescription on the heels of an
incredible three card layout.
Um, he couldn't be more perfect.
I absolutely love it.
(35:34):
So let this be a reminderYou've never been broken.
You've just been buried under alot of stuff and, bestie, you
are rising.
