Rock fight.
Rock fight.
Rock fight.
Rock fight.
Rock fight.
Rock fight.
Welcome to the Rock Fight, where we speak our truth, slay sacred
cows, and sometimes agree to disagree.
This is an outdoor podcastthat aims for the head.
I'm Colin True, and joining metoday, she's the current FKT holder.
(00:20):
When it comes to writingguidebooks, it's Dante celebrating.
It's so untrue.
I feel like I have the slowestknown time for writing guidebooks.
Don't ask me how long I'vebeen working on the current book.
I think that that's a slow,painful process for anybody.
Yeah, it's.
And you're the fastest.
I'm the fastest at theslowest, most painful.
(00:42):
Yeah.
Like they say, last one toCanada wins on the pct.
Last one to their publisher wins.
I hope my publisher's notlistening today.
Right, that'd probably be agood idea.
No, she's well ahead of schedule.
I basically wrote a wholesecond, third book I'm deep in.
It's a series now, multi partseries, serialized guidebook.
(01:02):
The second and third parts ofit are just basically my journal
entries from the process ofwriting this.
So I think a serializedguidebook is a good idea.
I think it's kind of like, okay, so you're at the trailhead
now.
Wait till next month.
We'll tell you where to go next.
Just hunker down.
That's going to be.
My next podcast is just day byday taking people along the trail.
(01:23):
Actually, I bet there arepeople who would listen to that.
I'm just going to narrate eachday on a long trail.
It's like a vlog, but it'sjust a daily podcast.
Yeah, every three days.
It's just crying.
Why am I doing this?
This is totally normal.
This sucks.
How did Cheryl Strayed do it?
How did Cheryl Stray?
(01:43):
We saw it in the movie Rhysshowed us.
That's right.
A lot of throwing.
Well, today Shantae and I aregoing to be talking about the future
of Rock Fight and we are goingto gear up for the launch of Gear
Abbey.
And I just realized I forgotto write down my programming reminders
as I wrote notes for yours only.
So.
Programming remind reminders.
Did you hear Monday's episodeof the Rock Fight?
If not, you should go back andlisten to it.
(02:04):
It's stellar.
And actually, I don't need tohave my programming reminders written
down because the other bignews of the week is just yesterday.
Guess who was on open Container?
Ooh, who could it be?
You know who it was.
Moi.
It Was you.
It was me.
I still cannot believe that Doug.
Delightful Doug.
(02:24):
Doug, whose voice is like abalm to my soul, agreed to have me
on for some reason.
Hashtag Delightful Doug.
Delightful Doug.
It was quite a treat, honestly.
I feel very.
I just want to talk to Dougonce a week.
I actually just want Doug tobe my therapist.
So, Doug, if you're listening,I think.
He'D be into that.
(02:44):
I could pay you $50 a week, Doug.
Do you want to reveal to thelisteners, like, what container was
actually opened?
I.
You know what?
I just had a glass of water, so.
No, we talked.
We talked about some.
Doug.
Doug asked me a lot of reallylovely questions about my experiences
on long trail, but we alsotalked a lot about.
(03:04):
I grew up in the inner city.
We talked a lot about urbannature and sort of how we find nature
where we are.
And.
And.
And of course, we talked aboutGear Abbey, which we'll get into
a bit more.
But.
But yeah, it was a reallyspecial conversation.
And yeah, Doug, you were anabsolute delight.
Delightful Doug.
Hashtag I hope people enjoythe episode.
(03:25):
I am much less filthy.
I was basically just an angelbaby on that entire episode.
So look what happens when youaround Colin.
I wouldn't you listen to that one.
Oh, and you would like it.
Honestly, I don.
I think if poop was brought upat all, it was Doug that brought
it up.
Yeah, let's just blame Doug.
It's fine.
Hashtag blame Doug.
Blame delightful Doug.
So, last programming reminderthis Friday, Matt Sutton from Columbia,
(03:49):
the SVP of marketing forColumbia, is coming on to talk about
Engineered for Whatever andthe blowback to Engineered for Whatever.
So we're excited about that.
But, Shantae, how should ourfolks listening to this maybe follow
along with the pod, reach outto us, all that good stuff.
So many ways.
I'm just gonna high Colin first.
You know what?
You can sign up for ournewsletter by heading to Rockfight
(04:11):
Co. Colin spends a lot of timeand energy and puts a lot of heart
into the newsletter.
I haven't done that yet thisweek, but.
Yes, but at some point he will.
At some point it will.
Another one will arrive inyour point.
In the future, specialdelivery from Colin2.
You could also follow us onInstagram to get video clips of me
looking very sweaty because Idon't have air conditioning in my.
(04:34):

not so sweaty other peoplewith central air.
And finally, you can emailus@myrockfightmail.com with your
questions, comments, concerns,love notes.
You can Also send me a Venmo.
As we've discussed.
You're going to understand whyin a minute.
But any drinking money?
(04:55):
Thanks to Colin and what he'slaid out for me today.
But yeah, stay in touch.
We love you guys.
We wouldn't have a podcast ifwe didn't have listeners.
Well, we do have a few updateson the Rock Fight, and I'm not as
overly sentimental podcast person.
I tend to bristle when peopleare like, oh, my God, you know, we
made it to 50 episodes.
Like, wow, how'd you do it?
You know, like that kind of thing.
(05:15):
Like, it's a mic every damnweek, right?
Just if you stick, if youstick to it, if you want to do it,
these things come along.
But we are.
Next Monday will be the 400thepisode of the Rock Fight, which
I'm like, that's kind of awesome.
And we did it in less thanthree years, which is even more awesome.
Which means we've done a lotof podcasts.
There were some times back.
Yeah, back in the beginning, I was.
(05:36):
I was ripping off five a day.
Five a day.
Five a day.
Imagine that.
Just emotional.
It was daily.
It was like five a week.
And I just really wanted tokind of, you know, do as much as
I can and explore the medium.
And I had the time to do itand it was great from the beginning.
It's definitely the industrypart of the pod is kind of what has
(05:56):
really taken off.
I didn't know if I wanted totalk about outdoor industry stuff.
I just kind of wanted to getoff my hot takes about the outdoors,
some of which were industry focused.
Some of them were.
Well, the first episode of Ski resorts.
Our day isn't an outdoorsport, so adventure topics have always
been part of it.
But it's gotten.
And you know what?
I gotta give our pal JustinHausman credit.
(06:18):
He's the one who said, I don'tthink there's enough bandwidth to
talk about this stuff.
On the adventure side of it, Ifeel like everything has been said,
you know, and this is way backwhen we first started doing this.
And, you know, I think thethings that we.
That we can hang our hat onhere with Shantae and I doing this,
and Justin too, when he washere too, was kind of like, was our
point of view.
That's what's interesting, frankly, like how we approach these
(06:39):
things, because there is a lotof same still in the stories.
If you go look around on allthe kind of outdoor media websites,
and I've talked about this alot lately, it's not real different.
There's a lot of same outthere in terms of the stuff that's
covered.
But the thing that I amexcited about and we're gonna talk
about more about it in asecond with Gear Abbey launching
hosted by Shantae Salibaresitting on the other side of the
(07:01):
suitcase.
Oh yeah, I'm here.
I'm still here.
I'm letting Colin have hissoliloquy right now.
I don't wanna interrupt his flow.
I just, I don't have a lotleft to say.
I feel like on the outdoors ona weekly basis.
And the thing I'm most excitedabout Gear Abbey is this sort of
new format that we're bringing.
When it comes to these topics, most outdoor podcasts tend to kind
(07:22):
of settle on the here's aperson we're gonn.
There's a lot of things thatyou're gonna probably have already
known or it's not gonna bethat original and maybe you'll get
something out of it, maybe you won't.
Whatever the reason, I'm soexcited for our listeners to hear
Gear Abby is number one, yourpoint of view.
And then also I do co host that.
So I'm gonna be on Gear Abbey.
I'm so excited about that.
We will be reunited.
(07:44):
Yeah, I guess what we'resaying is the.
I guess I'm beating around the bush.
The Wednesday episodes.
We are moving on from theWednesday adventure episode.
Spice made me is what he'strying to say.
Colin called me today and mademe cry is what he's.
Yeah.
Shaming me on the pod.
Yeah, I did.
It's my last opportunity, apparently.
I said, Sal Bear, you're out.
(08:05):
But also you're promotedbecause you got your own podcast.
True.
It's a double edged sword, really.
No, I mean, you know, it'sinteresting because as I told Colin
today, in between my tears,it's been a real banner month for
me over here, let me tell you.
I told him, I said, you know, listen, I've really, this has been
a highlight for me and what'sbeen quite a difficult few months
(08:27):
for me personally, that comingon here every Monday for us and then
obviously y' all listen to iton Wednesdays.
But every Monday afternoonsitting here with my buddy Colin
True and bantering about allthings outdoor and adventure and
some environmental news andthis and that has been an absolute
joy.
And it's been such a delightbecoming part of the Rock Fight team
(08:49):
and co hosting this with you.
And he promised to notdisappear me into the ether.
I will be back.
No way.
But yeah, it's been a realdelight and I'm gonna miss it, I'm
not gonna lie.
But I think we're gonna haveto incorporate.
We, you know, we've recordedsome Gear Abbeys.
We're about to launch next week.
(09:11):
We'll tell you a little bitmore about that in a second.
But the banter you love willnot go away.
It's just going to be on adifferent show in a different format.
Correct.
And for those of you who haveenjoyed having Shanta here, you are
going to continue to hear heron the Rock Fight.
So the plan is the RockFight's really, it's going to be
an industry podcast Mondayswith Owen and Dave are that's going
(09:33):
to be the kind of featuredepisode of the week.
We are going to feature otherindustry personalities like we have
in the past, maybe a littlebit more frequently, hopefully on
average about once a week.
But in addition to that, you're going to hear Shantae and
Schnitzbahn and maybe morefrom Owen and a bunch of other personalities
that we're kind of formingrelationships with on the podcast
as well.
But on average about twice a week.
Kind of down from that.
(09:53):
It was time to sort of likestreamline the Rock Fight and make
sure we're spending as muchtime as we can bringing up Gear Abbey
and also Open Container withDoug as well.
And if you have anything tosay about this, such as, boy, Colin,
you're an idiot for lettingShantae go and not hosting the Wednesday
episode anymore.
You know the email.
It's myrockfight gmail.com.
(10:15):
There's a guy named Troy whowe're going to hear from for sure.
I don't want to actually.
If you get any emails fromhaters that are like, thank the good
Lord you have that woman.
That woman is gone.
Don't send those to me, Colin.
I don't want to know those people.
Are banned from the Rock Fight universe.
No, I just got to make senseright now, guys.
And I think that is what we'rereally building the future of Rock
Fight.
As the brand off of theindustry side is on the Rock Fight,
(10:37):
our more gear and adventurefocus is going to be on Gear Abbey
and then Open Container forour broader outdoor kind of culture
commentary with Doug Schnitzbahn.
And that's going to be thelineup that we're going to be riding
to victory.
And you know, it's going to be.
Good riding to victory.
It's just so action filled.
I like that.
That's Right.
We are the leader of theoutdoor podcast here on the Rock
(10:59):
Flight Podcast Network.
But all tears aside, let'spreview for a second what you have
going on.
Let's talk about Gear Abbey.
September 4th, Thursday.
Mark it down.
By the time this comes out,the trailer should be out.
We just recorded that.
So as long as.
Yeah, as long as that actually recorded.
And we'll link that in theshow notes.
(11:20):
We'll link that in the show notes.
And then, yeah, next week,Thursday, September 4th, tell us
why'd you want to.
You called me after listeningto Gear and Beer.
Yeah, Gear and Beer.
Rip.
I really miss you, Gear andBeer, but you love to kill a podcast,
so I'm very metrics driven.
So.
Metrics driven.
But.
So 1.
This was about exactly a yearago, Colin.
(11:41):
I think it was maybe last September.
I was.
Or maybe end of September, Iwas driving up to Yosemite.
I was going up there to dosome field work for the book I'm
working on.
And I was.
I was kind of like justpounding episodes of Gear and Beer.
And there was one where at theend of the episode, Colin and Justin
are chit chatting, and theysaid something like, oh, we should
have Shantae on.
And she could just answereverybody's questions.
(12:02):
And I texted him before I lost service.
I was like, I'll be your gear, Abby.
It was the best.
Colin's like, this man lovesan idea, y'.
All.
And by the way, Colin justdoesn't love an idea.
He actually gets shit doneonce he loves something.
So the problem is, if you tellhim something, he's going to hold
you to it for almost a year, and then suddenly you have a podcast.
See?
So it's actually your faultwe're canceling Wednesdays because
(12:23):
I've been valuing your idea so much.
We're going to do that instead.
I can't believe you don't wantto still talk about Everest every
week and instead create awhole new podcast.
But I suppose we can.
I mean, but I thought about itand when we started having conversations
and I loved this idea ofanswering people's questions.
I.
Most people do not know thisabout me.
(12:44):
I used to write a sex columnwhen I was a writer for an alt weekly
back in the day.
And I also used to be a schoolsocial worker.
I've taught environmentaleducation and things like that.
Mutually exclusive.
That's totally different.
Although I did teach sex ed in elementary.
I was 6.
By reading your column.
No, no, those.
(13:05):
No, that would have beenterrifying for the children.
No, I used to Teach sixthgrade sex ed too.
So that not my favorite partof being a social worker.
But.
But yeah.
So I love, I love the idea ofdemocratizing knowledge and I like
sharing what I learned.
I think about, like, listenall the things when I was a kid,
I mean, Doug and I talkedabout this a bit, but I, you know,
(13:27):
I wasn't born backpacking.
I did.
I grew up in the inner city.
So for me, I've had peopleguide me along the way.
And you know, I learned that,oh, there's people I can trust to
answer my questions and not beaddict about it.
And I would like to be thatfor people.
So the idea is you can sendany question you have that's tangentially
or directly related to the outdoors.
(13:48):
People, places, products, pastime, and your relationship to
them.
Our relationships to them.
And I will do my best toanswer them.
Or I'm just going to dig deep.
I have, I have been an outdoorjournalist for a long time.
I've got a pretty deepRolodex, even though Rolodexes don't
exist anymore, of outdoorathletes and brand connections and
all sorts of people that canhelp answer the questions.
(14:10):
I can't.
So it's gonna be fun.
It's gonna be awesome.
And look, you know, as much asit's making you sad that you're not
gonna do this particularepisode every week, damn it.
It's honestly, part of it is.
Cause like, this is thepodcast that I want from the adventure
side of things.
Like, I wanna hear this.
I've not heard anything likethis before in the outdoor community
(14:31):
or frankly anywhere.
Maybe there's some otherthings that are similar, but I've
not heard it.
I like the perspective of theconceit of what we're gonna be answering
versus just another to your point.
Like, well, it's springtimeagain and now we're back at Mount
Everest.
And guess what?
Some stuff is happening.
And you know, and it's justthat kind of repeated sort of cadence
(14:53):
of the same kind of stuff.
Yeah.
Getting your perspective on itis great.
I love to then weigh in.
Cause we can then do the kindof more bantery thing that we enjoy
doing on this particular episode.
We love a good banter.
But then also given our.
Yours especially.
But then our combined sort ofexpanded network of, well, who do
we want to bring in?
Yeah, that's exciting.
Maybe it is our pal JustinHouseman for a little gear and beer.
(15:15):
Maybe it is another journalist.
Maybe it is an expert forsomething that we don't even know
about yet.
Let's have them help come inand help answer a question.
And I think it's just thisincredibly rich sandbox that we're
getting to get to play in andbring something to the outdoor community
that doesn't really exist at all.
Yeah.
So, I mean, I think for peoplelike a lot of you listening are probably,
(15:35):
you know, I would think thatyou enjoy being outside in some capacity,
even if you're in a store allday or in an office all day, you
know, even if you think, oh,is this.
Is this for beginners?
What is this for?
It's not.
It's for everybody.
The questions are going to runthe gamut from pretty basic introductory
questions to things you maynever have considered or thought
about.
And that's the fun of it, isthat the whole thing is meant to
(15:57):
be entertaining.
Colin and I have our littlespecial magical podcasting chemistry
together, and we hope thatthat translates in this so that it's
fun to listen to.
That's the whole point.
Do you want to laugh in yourcar while you're driving to work
or, you know, do whateveryou're doing this weekend?
Are you going skiing?
I mean, if going skiing thisweekend, I want to know where you
are because it's still hot.
We're big down in south sweating.
(16:18):
Like southern hemisphere.
Knee pits are sweating.
Knee pits.
Yeah.
But I think the.
Yeah, I'm looking at this toyour point about one of these questions
for and the first few episodesthat we recorded.
There's some basics in there, you know, kind of got to think some
table setting questions.
But also, this is your chancethen, listeners, to challenge gear
(16:38):
Abbey, like send some weird stuff.
I mean, I think, frankly, the weirder.
And we love a weird anythinglike send your weird stuff in.
Yeah, it will probably makethe show if it's a weird question.
I will say the very firstquestion on the very first episode
my mom wrote in, and it is,oh, yeah, ridiculous.
So I was like, mom, do youreally want me to answer that?
(17:01):
She's like, yeah, but that'sthe beauty.
Of it, too, is because you'respeaking from your personal experience
within me, either kind ofnodding along or poking fun or whatever,
even a more basic question isgoing to be, you know, have a great
answer.
So, yeah.
So if you want to hear me makefun of myself, if you want to hear
me make fun of Colin, but Iwill never, ever make fun of the
people asking the questions.
So I will.
(17:22):
No judgment.
Colin will silently judge, because if he judges out loud, I
will berate him on the podcast.
I Will cry some more.
Colin, do you want me to cry more?
No crying.
No more crying.
No more crying in podcasts.
There's no crying in podcasts.
Favorite line from A League ofTheir Own.
When he signs the kid's ball,he's like, wow.
Avoid the clap, Jimmy Dugan.
(17:43):
Like, that's good advice.
Like, I'm like, I couldn'tbelieve they put that in that movie.
I'm like, what a great.
How do I clap on the on.
I'm hiking the long trail inVermont this summer.
What is your advice foravoiding the clap?
Let me call up on one of myexperts, Colin, who has successfully
avoided the clap his entire life.
(18:05):
To my knowledge, I don't actually.
To your knowledge?
Yeah.
This could all be a lie.
Clap all the famous brothelsof Vermont's long trail.
I feel like the clap issomething you could maybe get on
the at.
I don't.
I don't know.
It seems possible.
The clap.
Hantavirus or clap.
I mean, it's kind of like achlamydia or hantavirus.
Yeah.
What a choice.
(18:26):
So that's what we have goingon, guys.
I mean, kind of short episode,I think.
Anything else you want to sayabout gear, Abby, or you want me
to ask you?
Let's.
You know, I'd say if youhaven't already listened to open
container this week, it feelsvery strange to plug myself.
But Doug, Doug is a great interviewer.
You know, this man is aperfish, and he did his research
and we had a great conversation.
(18:46):
So I think part of it, you'lllearn a little bit more about me
if you want to.
And then part of it, you'lllearn a little bit more about why
I.
Why Gary Abbey is going to be different.
So it's time for a parting shot.
All right, Parting shot time.
And because I made Shantae crytoday, I'm going to step aside and
(19:06):
give the party.
I want to know what yourparting shot was, though.
I didn't end up writing itbecause I felt bad.
This is the best thing, isthat Colin and I share notes every
week for the episode thatwe'll never record again.
And it says under partingshot, it just says, jeep Cherokee
is not back.
No explanation.
All right, fine.
Real quick.
Nothing else.
If you click the link, you'llsee that Jeep has re released the
(19:27):
Cherokee.
And it's like, ah, the JeepCherokee's back.
I think it's a gear junkiearticle or something like that.
Fuck off.
It is not back.
The chief Cherokee should onlybe back if you brought Back the old
school.
Boxy looking, Cherokee Square business.
Goddamn right.
I'm like, you know, if it had.
If they had now, if they hadnever gotten rid of it, which was
a mistake in like, what, of2000, 2001.
(19:48):
By the way, the Jeep Cherokeefunded the rock fight for like a
year.
So, like, that's.
I sold my Jeep in order tofund the podcast.
So that's like that.
So this is very personal to me.
So.
But if they had never gottenrid of it and it slowly evolved into
what you see in this articletoday, great.
But you didn't.
So if you're gonna bring itback, bring it back the way it was
it's supposed to.
Look, See, you almost didn'tget a chance to rant Colin.
(20:11):
Well, I wasn't going to.
I was gonna.
I was.
But you opened the door and I.
Said, how could you do that tothe people?
Don't deny them your rants, old man.
People need my parting shot.
Need your fist shaking at the sky?
God damn it, chief.
All right, all right.
What's your parting shot?
My parting shot.
So originally, Colin suggestedthat I make my parting shot about
how he's taking of my joys inlife by take it at me by removing
(20:34):
this.
My parting shot was gonna beat Colin, but I was like, no, dude,
I've got something better.
So my parting shot is actuallyabout all of the women out there
smashing fkts.
That's fastest known times onlong trails right now.
So earlier this month.
Caroline.
I want to say it with a French accent.
Caroline.
Oh, yeah, Caroline Hibbert.
Sorry, Caroline.
I should have looked this upbefore getting on the MIC.
(20:56):
Completed the 223, give ortake mile JMT.
That's John Muir Trail.
New move Poyo in the Paiute language.
Northbound in 4 days, 4 hoursand 58 minutes to set a new unsupported.
That means nobody's coming outthere and helping.
Her new unsupported female record.
On that trail last month, TaraDowser set a supported record for
(21:17):
any gender.
Any.
Any gender at all.
Doubt.
Did I say dowser?
You said dowser.
Yeah, I don't know why, butevery time I see her name, I think
bowser.
Even though none of.
No, I'm with you.
I immediately knew what youwere going with.
Super Mario Brothers.
Yeah, sorry, Tara Real.
Really.
This is why Colin's kicking meoff the pod.
Do you want to leave that inor do you want to start it over and
just re record it?
Okay, so Tara Dauer, whosename I know and just said Wrong.
(21:42):
Set a supported record for anygender on Vermont's 272 mile long
trail, completing it in threedays, 18 hours, 30 minutes and seven
seconds.
Now that is almost three hoursoff the men's record and nearly two
days off the women's record.
So here's the thing.
While people have been chasingspeed records for decades on some
of these trails, it wasn'tuntil ultra runner Peter Backwin,
(22:05):
who by the way was the firstperson to document completing the
JMT in under four days back in2003 when he launched fastest known
time.com that there was a wayof kind of keeping tabs on all of
these efforts in one place.
Still, it was very much a maledominated thing to kind of keep.
You don't say.
Yeah, shocking.
I know, I know.
(22:26):
But yeah.
So it was, it was dude brocentral, really.
It was Jennifer Farr Davis whobusted ass to set the overall.
Overall, that's any gender.
Again, supported record on theAppalachian Trail in 2011 in 46 days,
11 hours and 20 minutes.
Then that's bonkers.
I know, I know.
That's been broken.
Still bonkers.
It's crazy.
Yeah, yeah.
(22:46):
That's even crazier thatpeople continue to break these records.
But you had Heather Anish Anderson.
She went on to become thefastest self supported person of
any gender on the PCT in 2013and the AT in 2015.
And just last year our oldfriend Tara Dower became the fastest
person of any gender tocomplete a supported run on the at.
So I also think about how lastyear Jasmine Paris became the first
(23:09):
woman to win the notoriousBarkley marathons.
Right.
And even if you go beyondtrails into running as a whole, I
think about how Alison Felixsurpassed the iconic Carl Lewis to
become the most decoratedtrack and field Olympic athlete of
all time.
So I know people like to bitchabout speed records like, oh, fkts,
(23:29):
these people are missing outon the fun of the trail.
They don't see anything whilethey're out there.
Which is funny because Iinterviewed, I interviewed, I've
interviewed all of it.
Like Jennifer Farr Davis.
I've interviewed Anish Heather Anderson.
I remember Heather inparticular saying, what can't I see
at three miles an hour thateverybody else is seeing?
Like I see it all just fine.
I just am out there for longer.
(23:50):
But people really love to hateon FKTs.
And listen, I'm not going out there.
I'm not about to run any ofthis shit.
But I said instead ofcomplaining that somehow runners
are ruining long trails, whichI hear all the time, from people.
Backpackers love to bitchabout these FKT folks.
Instead of saying like, oh,these guys are ruining long trails
(24:10):
by attempting all these speedrecords, how about we just celebrate
the fact that there's theseincredible accomplishments of women
doing things that people neverthought we could do.
And I think it's incrediblethat humans in general can keep pushing
the boundaries, but I fuckinglove seeing women knock it out of
the park.
Whether or not you love anfkt, this is something to celebrate.
Insan leave out former RockFight guest Sunny Strower, who set
(24:34):
a record up on the Iditarodlast year on skis.
All over the place, women are doing.
Cool shit and just there'sbeen some AZT records recently.
This is all the stuff I wish Icould have seen when I was a kid.
It's like I think about thevery first time.
So a couple like two years agomaybe, or maybe even last year, I
(24:55):
went to see the women's soccerteam here in LA for the very first
time.
And it was my first timeseeing a professional women's soccer
team.
And I got really teary eyedbecause I thought about they kept
panning to kids in theaudience, like, you know, kids of
all genders, like, cheeringthem on.
And I'm like, oh, my God, Iplayed soccer for 13 years.
(25:17):
I never got to see that.
Like, it was so.
It was really emotional.
That was a good time for crying.
The whitest thing.
Yeah, right.
The whitest thing ever is the, like, you know, discounting what
it means to see someone wholooks like you, right?
And like, there's a guy Ifollow on Instagram who is a black
dude who just got into icehockey and then going through the
(25:37):
NHL draft was then talkingabout like, how some team, like,
drafted like another black guyor whatever, and he's like, that
guy looks like me.
It's so awesome.
And it's like you don'tunderstand how powerful it is to
see someone who looks like youto do these things.
And it's like, yeah, that justkind of makes sense.
I don't know why this has been.
I mean, think about it.
Then grow up with lessrestrictions and less paradigms.
If they think they only fit, like, the box gets bigger for these
(25:58):
kids.
The container, as we like tosay, just keeps getting bigger and
bigger and bigger.
So don't plug Doug's show anymore.
We've already plugged in Open container.
The best episode was on yesterday.
Is it better than Owen's episode?
Oh, no, I don't want to sayit's better than Owen.
That's what she's saying.
I do want to point out that aswe were texting about some of these
(26:20):
things for lovely partingshot, however, you did say that you'll
never understand how it's funto do this.
Oh, no, Absolutely not.
I feel like vomiting when I goon a run on a hot day.
So I don't know.
Like, I love running.
I love hiking.
I love these trails.
But, you know, I definitelysee the appeal.
I've thought about doing, like, the Tahoe Rim Trail is a little
(26:41):
shorter than the JMT New Mopoyo.
I've thought about, like, canI knock that out in a week?
Because that's a little easierto take time off work.
That's how some peopleactually get into these things.
Sure.
You know, they want to see the landscape.
They don't have a ton of time off.
But then I think about how.
How tiring it is.
And I've done Liz.
Liz Snorkel Thomas.
Liz, who's the co founder andeditor over at Treeline Review.
(27:03):
She and I have done a lot ofbackpacking together, and we did
a trip once where every singleday was a marathon, like a literal
marathon of miles on the trail.
And it was something like5,000, 6,000ft of gain every single
day.
It was brutal.
I would not want to do thatfor 46 days or whatever Heather did
on the AT.
That's nuts.
Well, I'm gonna take that as acommitment that the Tahoe 200, which
(27:26):
is a circumnavigation of LakeTahoe that a lot of people finish,
take, like, five days to finish.
You know, I forget what thecutoff is for that race.
Yeah, it's technically areally long ultramarathon.
I will crew for you.
I've crewed that race before.
Have you really?
Right.
Yeah.
Crew.
My buddy Bryce with his sisterwas great.
Wow.
We had a good time.
And there you go.
You can.
We'll, we'll.
We'll.
(27:46):
The last Wednesday episode,Rock Fight.
This will be the commitment we make.
Once you complete it, we'llbring Wednesdays back.
There you go.
Dangle.
Okay.
All right, I'll get on that.
I'll get right on that rose.
All right, that's it fortoday, everybody.
