This week in rock history brings iconic gigs, protest-turned-holiday classics, and one of the darkest concerts ever held. On Dec 1, 1964, The Who kicked off their explosive Tuesday-night residency at London’s Marquee Club, solidifying their reputation as Britain’s wildest live act. On the same day in 1971, John Lennon and Yoko Ono released “Happy Xmas (War Is Over),” a timeless blend of holiday spirit and antiwar activism.

Then on Dec 6, 1969, the Rolling Stones headlined the infamous Altamont Free Concert — the chaotic, violent event many consider the symbolic end of the 1960s. Rounding out the week, Marty Robbins became the first major artist to cover Elvis Presley in 1954, helping bring early rock ’n’ roll into the mainstream.

Plus, we celebrate major rock birthdays including Ozzy Osbourne, John Densmore, Dennis Wilson, Chris Hillman, Peter Buck, and Tom Waits — a legendary lineup born this week.
