Forget everything you thought you knew about detox. In this eye-opening solo episode of The Root of the Matter, Dr. Rachaele Carver cuts through the hype and misconceptions to reveal what truly supports your body’s natural cleansing systems.

Quoting Harvard physician Dr. Peter Cohen, “A true detox isn’t a starvation or restriction diet, it’s biochemistry.” With over 80,000 chemicals in today’s environment, Dr. Carver explains why quick fixes and fad cleanses fall short, and why a science-based approach to detoxification is more important than ever.

You’ll discover how your liver, kidneys, skin, intestines, and lungs each play unique roles in elimination, and why they need targeted nutritional and lifestyle support. Dr. Carver also explores the surprising links between gut bacteria, amino acids, and detox capacity, while uncovering the overlooked role of the nervous system. Could stress management be the missing piece in your detox journey?

This episode kicks off a powerful mini-series featuring leading experts on topics like functional nutrition and home toxin reduction. Whether you’re facing stubborn health issues or simply want to strengthen your body’s resilience, you’ll come away with the science, clarity, and strategies you need for true, sustainable detoxification—far beyond juice cleanses and quick fixes.

Dr. Carver (00:01):
Hey everybody, welcome back to a solo episode
of the Root of the Matter.
I am your host, dr RachelCarver, and today I want to talk
a little bit about detox.
I've been kind of planning thispodcast for a while and I
decided that there's so muchdepth to detox, there's so many
fads out there, there's so manymisconceptions, that I thought I

(00:21):
would do a kind of a miniseries of podcasts with some
experts in the field ofdetoxification.
I want to really unravel allthe intricacies to
detoxification.
If you really think that youcan clean your body of decades
worth of toxins with a 21 daycleanse, you've got another

(00:42):
thing coming right.
There's it's so much morecomplex and as I was researching
this, I typed into AI.
This is my new favorite tool toreally help me find things and
be able to clarify things soquickly now, and so I asked it
what are the top detox trendsonline today?

(01:03):
Detox trends online today.
And the number one thing and Iwas really excited because a lot
of it was getting like more ofa holistic tilt to it.
So that was great.
So the number one fad was awhole food, nutrient dense diet
that increases liver support bydetoxifying with a lot of

(01:23):
cruciferous vegetables which arehigh in sulforaphane, which is
really important to makeglutathione one of our major
antioxidants, and a diet rich inminerals and antioxidants.
I was like that's prettyamazing.
That's the number one trend, because that is how we really
want to be healthy.
Right, we've all heard of the21-day juice cleanse or the
water fast or all thesedifferent things.

(01:45):
The second most rated one, ormost looked up, is a digital
detox.
So I think it's reallyimportant.
When we're talking aboutdetoxification, there's a couple
of different categories.
If you've been listening to thepodcast for a while, you know
that my take is that all chronicdisease, minus a very small
amount that is purely genetic, comes down to toxins right,

(02:07):
toxins and infections, which youcould say infections create
toxins.
So at the end of the day, it'stoxins.
That's why we have to detoxifyour body.
You've heard me say a milliontimes there's over 80,000
chemicals in our environmenttoday.
So if we're not doing some kindof consistent daily
detoxification or daily supportof those elimination organs,

(02:28):
right.
So we're talking kidney, liver, skin, large intestine, lungs
right, the way we breathe outall that carbon dioxide, too, we
got to remember the lungs.
So if we're wearing masks allthe time, you're still seeing
people walking around with masks.
They're breathing in theirtoxins over and over, and not a

(02:51):
great idea.
That isn't the best way to stayhealthy and prevent.
You can't prevent all thetoxins in the world.
So how do we create resiliencein our body and how do we create
a super detoxifying system?
So when we think about toxinsright, we obviously have the
physical toxins right, theenvironmental toxins we're

(03:11):
breathing, the physical toxinsthat may be in our food, but
also we talk a lot about theshow, also the emotional toxins
right.
The way we think, the way wefilter everything through.
It's been a really interestingjourney over the last decade for
myself.
I grew up.
I had a pretty great life.
Anybody looking from theoutside would.

(03:32):
I've been blessed and I trulyhave.
And yet things that havehappened to me have created
certain ways that I look atthings.
I get more stressed out andfeel like I must have the most
stressful job in the world.
But you can be stressed nomatter what job you have.
It's all about how we filterthe world, and so part of this
detox series we're going to talkabout the best way to detox

(03:55):
those negative emotions that wefilter our whole life view
through.
Because, again, the more that Istudy this, the more that I
feel that that nervous system isat the top of the tier.
And if we cannot balance ournervous system, it doesn't
really matter what we're eatingor how much we're exercising
right, we have to be in thatproper, balanced,

(04:18):
parasympathetic and able todetox.
So that's going to be animportant piece of the detox.
There was an interesting quotethat I found.
Dr Peter Cohen from HarvardMedical School said that a true
detox isn't our starvation orrestriction diet, it's
biochemistry, and I love thisand I think more and more people

(04:41):
are trying to understand this, and that may be why the number
one trend is a whole food diet.
We're all understanding that.
Yes, sometimes when we changeour diet whether it's going
vegan, vegetarian, carnivore, keto, low carb, whatever it may
be we often feel betterinitially because we're changing

(05:02):
that environment in our bodyfrom what was making us sick.
So almost every single diet youchange to can make a difference
initially.
But again, we are just gettingrid of something.
Maybe that was irritating usand the goal is not to restrict
a complete food group.
Right, that's not the way ourbodies were designed.

(05:22):
And again, why do we go lowcarb.
Because we know when we talkabout carbs most people are
thinking the sugary snacks andthe cracks, crackers and the
breads and the bagels.
And yes, that can really shootour insulin too high.
But a lot of it is because thosekinds of grains often have so
many toxins.
They get stored for longperiods of times in these silos,

(05:45):
right.
And so mold overgrows, right.
And mold toxin mold toxicity isone of the most difficult
toxins to get rid of.
It suppresses our immune systemdramatically.
Unfortunately, in conventionalmedicine nobody's really looking
for those kinds of toxins.
We get all these weird ailments, we have all these autoimmune

(06:07):
conditions, other immune issues, because we're not looking at
what's the toxin that'saffecting that immune system,
right?
So again, we really need tothink about our body's organs.
How can we support the liver?
Some of us, like myself, havemethylation issues.
Methylation is one way we bindonto a toxin to make it less

(06:29):
toxic and have our bodyrecognize it and get it out of
the body.
Somebody like me I need alittle more support, maybe a
little more B vitamins.
I need to support my liver tomake more glutathione.
But then also you got to thinkdo I have the proper gut
bacteria also to make theglutathione.
Do I have the right gutbacteria to absorb my B vitamins

(06:53):
?
So maybe I'm taking B vitaminsor eating food, but that's the
other piece.
Can I absorb those nutrientsproperly?
So we're going to dive intothese nuances a little bit.
Right, we have to think aboutthe skin sweating.
So exercise is importantbecause it gets our blood
flowing right.
It builds energy and, like ourenergy, gets stored in our

(07:14):
muscles.
That's why, the older we get,as our energy over the whole
body starts to decline a littlebit, you need those strong
muscles.
You need to eat more protein tomake more muscles, because
those are your rechargeablebatteries, so that people with
more muscle mass, the older youget, have more energy reserve.
So that's why it becomes moreand more important.
It's not just about thecirculation, but building those

(07:38):
batteries right and thenlearning how to breathe properly
right.
When we're exercising we'rebreathing, we're getting rid of
some excess carbon dioxide.
Breathing, also sweating thatis one of the best ways to get
rid of heavy metals.
So people talk about sauna allthe time.
It's a fantastic way to sweatout certain things like heavy

(08:00):
metals.
Every toxin kind of has adifferent pathway, so it's nice
number one to talk about.
What are the toxins our bodyhave?
We'll talk about that inanother podcast.
What are the tests that I liketo do?
We've talked about it inprevious ones, but we'll dive in
a little bit deeper there.

(08:20):
It's really important that we'recreating enough bile.
How do we make sure we'resecreting enough bile?
We have to have enough stomachacid.
We've talked about this in thepast too.
As we get older, we make lessand less stomach acid and that
stomach acid is like theignition in a car right.
That is what drives all of ourdigestion.
So it's so important to havethat very acidic stomach so that

(08:41):
we start that process ofbreaking everything down.
With the acidic stomach then weget into the ideally more
alkaline small intestine wherewe start absorbing things, and
that stomach acid helps kick offthe bile production.
The insulin, all the pancreaticenzymes everything has to work.
So we have to think about whatare good ways to have that

(09:04):
robust stomach acid.
I'm going to have Mackenzie comeback on.
We talked to her a while backabout functional nutrition.
She's going to talk to us alittle bit about the stomach
acid Helps me.
She's taught me a little bitabout.
I was always saying justeverybody take apple cider
vinegar, but maybe that's notthe proper step for everybody.
So, again, she's going to helpus clarify how do we get that

(09:25):
digestion kickstarted so that wehave the right amount of
detoxifying elements and we havethe right balance of microbiome
to help us absorb the nutrientswe need.
So really important Othernutrients that are absolutely
vital for detoxification aminoacids.
Again, amino acids are thebreakdown of the protein.

(09:46):
We have to be able to eatenough protein to have these and
, unfortunately, plant proteinsare not the same as animal
proteins.
They don't have the same kindof amino acids that we really
need for proper detoxification.
If you are vegan or vegetarianthere's absolutely no judgment

(10:07):
here that's your lifestyle,wonderful.
Just want to make sure you aregetting the proper balance of
amino acids in order to detoxifyproperly.
Going to make sure we're makingenough glutathione, and there's
certain amino acids that createglutathione.
So, again, if we areplant-based, are we getting the
proper amount of the amino acidsto create the glutathione?

(10:31):
Fiber can be important too.
We need to bulk up that stooland help get it out of the body,
and there's controversy overthat right.
How much fiber do we reallyneed?
And again, that's going todepend on you as an individual
and there's controversy overthat right.
How much fiber do we reallyneed?
And again, that's going todepend on you as an individual
and you'll know from what isyour stool, how are your bowels.
So that's a good gauge to knowand we'll talk with Mackenzie a

(10:51):
little bit about that too.
And then we need obviouslyreally good hydration.
We've talked before it's notjust about water.
Do you have enough minerals andelectrolytes to absorb that
water?
The type of water that createsproper hydration is the
structured water.
Okay, we talked about that wayback in the first season.
Dr Tom Kellman talked us alittle bit about the water.

(11:12):
And it's not H2O in our cells,it's H2O3.
And that is a almost like jelloright and that is the proper
water that keeps that inside thecells, that allows all of the
cellular machinery to workproperly.
So we need proper minerals thatcreates the proper charge in

(11:32):
our cells in order to keephydrating.
And this a lot of people can getbogged down with detoxification
because they're not hydratingenough.
They may be flushing out toxinsgalore, but without enough
hydration things can get stuckand redistributed.
That's a big issue withdetoxification, that
redistribution.
You try to push things out.

(11:53):
Oftentimes we try to test forheavy metals and we use certain
supplements that push it out ofthe organ.
But again, if we're not able tocapture it and bring it out of
the body, it'll just getredistributed to another part of
the body, which obviously wedon't want.
And obviously sleep right whenwe get into deep sleep.
That is when the body is movingeverything through right.

(12:17):
We have to make sure the lymphsystem is flowing.
That is our big kind of sewersystem, basically.
And if that is stagnant, whichis often seen as cellulite,
right, people think I'm justgetting older, I'm fat, but no,
even heavier people, they mightnot have any cellulite, right,
because their lymph may beflowing okay.
So if you're noticing thatsometimes I was noticing that in

(12:37):
my thighs as a thin person I'llbe like, oh, I've got some
lymph stagnation, I've got.
I've got to start moving more,I've got to use my flow presso
lymph suit more, because I'mjust getting that stagnation
which is leading to overgrowthof all sorts of things.
Um, sleep is one reallyimportant time and 30% of our
sleep should be in that deepsleep in order to detoxify.

(13:01):
So if we're not sleeping wellfor a variety of reasons, we're
going to have a harder timedetoxing.
So before we jump into theseprograms, we really have to nail
down our hydration and oursleep patterns, at least trying
to get them better, right?
We can't try to detox and thengo to bed at 1 am, get up at 6
am right.
Try to detox and then go to bedat 1 am, get up at 6 am right.

(13:24):
It's really important to createthe good habits first, and then
detox is going to be so mucheasier and it will go more
quickly.
So again, we're going to diveinto all these little nuances.
Right, Some of the things thatI was also looking at online.
They talk about all these scamsand detoxification.
So if you see a detox thatseverely restricts your calories

(13:45):
, it's a bad idea.
This is old knowledge, right.
That calories in, calories out.
If I just eat less, I'm goingto lose weight.
Not necessarily, right.
It's the quality of calories.
I used to do a lecture all thetime and I would show okay, if
you have 100 calories ofbroccoli versus 100 calorie
snack pack, right.

(14:05):
Do you think your body is goingto absorb those calories the
same way?
Of course not.
You get so much more nutritionfrom that broccoli.
There's zero nutrition in thatsnack pack, but the calorie
count is the same.
So it's all about quality ofcalories, right?
Any detox that cuts out majorfood groups like carbs?
Right?
We know a lot of people if yougo on a low carb diet, you will

(14:29):
lose weight.
It's pretty common and thathappens.
However, we're also losing alot of water weight and it's not
a good long term strategy.
But, again, a lot of thosecarbs are loaded with toxins,
most of those carbs that wethink we're not talking about
fruits and veggie carbs.
Most people think of carbs asall the grains, the processed

(14:49):
snacky foods and those are sofull of toxins.
So if you cut that out, yes, that's going to be great, but we
want to change what we'reeating for carbs, right.
So that's important.
Any detox that promises to flushtoxins but doesn't specify
which one?
You got to be wary of that, right.
Anyone that suggests you canpull metals overnight.

(15:11):
So there's lots ofsuppositories and green drinks
that say we're going to pull itright out Again, if your kidneys
and liver and bowels are notworking properly, if your lymph
is stagnant, you do not want tostart pulling things out of the
fat stores or you're going tomake yourself really sick and we
get what's called a Herxheimerreaction.

(15:32):
So if you pull toxins tooquickly, you'll get headaches,
you'll get flu-like symptoms.
That's what we call theHerxheimer reaction, which isn't
necessarily dangerous orlong-term damaging, but it feels
terrible.
And that's not the right way todo it because, like I said,
you're just redistributingthings, so you're not being
effective.

(15:52):
So we really need to dodetoxification in the right
order.
Another one that doesn't talkabout any fiber, protein, fat or
hydration, because again, Ireally like what the Harvard
doctor said it's not aboutrestriction or starvation, it's
biochemistry.
We have to go back to thebasics and understand the way

(16:14):
the body metabolizes food.
Right, and again, that alsogoes back to the thought process
.
Right.
If we are stressed out and inthe sympathetic nervous system
at all times, you could have theperfect diet and you may not
absorb anything.
When we're stressed out, wereally tax our immune system
because the digestive systemshuts down.
And if we're not creatingenough stomach acid, right, this

(16:37):
is how, in my opinion, this ishow we get that overgrowth, the
small intestinal bacterialovergrowth or fungal overgrowth,
because the pH balance in thedigestive tract gets totally out
of whack and then nothing canhappen.
Right?
We don't realize more and more.
It's becoming really commonknowledge that the bacteria we
need good bacteria.
This is why we have to becareful with too much antibiotic

(16:59):
use, because the bacteria arethe ones that are absorbing
those nutrients and assimilatingthem and helping Like we don't
realize a lot of times.
Thyroid you know how commonhypothyroidism is and we're
always just looking at thethyroid.
Oh, let's just support thethyroid, let's give more T4 and
T3, but the problem may just bewe don't have the right bacteria
in the gut to convert that, orthe liver is inflamed and

(17:22):
damaged and we can't convert theT4 to the active T3.
So we have to really look alittle bit deeper before we're
jumping to medications until wereally understand the whole
process there.
So a couple other trends indetox right is using mindfulness
and meditation.
I love that.
We'll talk a little bit more ofthat.

(17:43):
I'll tell you some of thethings I love to use.
And then fasting right, fastinghad this huge wave and I
thought fasting was great.
When I first got rid of myeczema using the cell cores para
one and para two, I was alsofasting in the morning.
So I basically didn't eatbreakfast and I think one right,
I changed my eating habits, right, so I wasn't putting as
many of the toxic stuff that mybody didn't like and so that

(18:07):
helped then and I was clearingstuff out and I was moisturizing
my intestines with a pair oftwo and that really helped me
clear a lot of things.
But I overdid it.
I'm I am five foot to 115pounds.
I ended up being not eating.
I wasn't getting enoughcalories, so my hormones, my
cycle was all out of whack andthen after a couple of years I

(18:30):
was, my eczema was great, andthen it started to creep back a
little bit here and there andwhat I realized now is like that
for me that eczema was reallydeficiency and so I've talked
about it before.
In the last this year I havebeen really high dosing my
minerals, like just at the basiclevel, those nutrients that are
so crucial minerals, fatsoluble vitamins and B vitamins

(18:52):
absolutely vital for cellularmachinery to work.
So there's a gazillionsupplements and I have a
pharmacy in my house, right, butat the end of the day, the
basic elements of minerals, fatsoluble vitamins, b vitamins are
what is crucial to the cellworking properly and I feel so

(19:12):
confident now that I haverestored those levels that I
never fear that if I eat alittle bit of wheat here and
there if I eat, god forbid.
I don't really eat a lot offast food, but I wouldn't.
I'm not as paranoid if I atesomething like that nowadays.
Where it used to mess up withmy nervous system, I'd be

(19:33):
concerned that something wasgoing to happen.
So again, those are somethingsuper, super important.
So we have to be careful, especially women, the way we
fast.
Fasting during your periodgreat, that is a good time to
fast the week before we actuallyneed to eat more carbs.
It's a reason why we cravechocolate and sugary things.
We need more carbs to createthe progesterone and that's

(19:55):
really important.
With women.
We want a cycle.
Men, the fasting can work incertain ways, but if you have
dysregulated blood sugar, fasting may not work for you.
So again, you got to tweak inthere like little individual
stuff for all these kind ofthings.
That's kind of a brief overview.
Like I said, we're going tohave a few episodes that talk a

(20:19):
little bit more aboutdetoxification.
I have a couple of great peoplecoming on.
We're going to talk about howto detoxify your home.
Like I said, mackenzie's goingto come on.
Tell us a little aboutnutrition.
How do we get that stomach acidand all that kind of working.
I have a wonderful SpencerFeldman is coming on for
RemedyLink.
He's going to tell us he hassome amazing products and really

(20:40):
good protocols for just aboutevery toxin there is.
So I'm excited for you guys tolearn a little bit about that
and yeah, so I think it's goingto be exciting and a good series

Cardiac Cowboys

Cardiac Cowboys

The heart was always off-limits to surgeons. Cutting into it spelled instant death for the patient. That is, until a ragtag group of doctors scattered across the Midwest and Texas decided to throw out the rule book. Working in makeshift laboratories and home garages, using medical devices made from scavenged machine parts and beer tubes, these men and women invented the field of open heart surgery. Odds are, someone you know is alive because of them. So why has history left them behind? Presented by Chris Pine, CARDIAC COWBOYS tells the gripping true story behind the birth of heart surgery, and the young, Greatest Generation doctors who made it happen. For years, they competed and feuded, racing to be the first, the best, and the most prolific. Some appeared on the cover of Time Magazine, operated on kings and advised presidents. Others ended up disgraced, penniless, and convicted of felonies. Together, they ignited a revolution in medicine, and changed the world.
