I'm your host, korya Rivera, licensed massage therapist and
correspondent.
Every month, the Rub will bringyou news from the world of
massage therapy.
Today's Rubdown will includenews from December 2024 to
February 2025.
Don't forget the HealWell bloghas a helpful glossary of terms.

News.
If you have been desperatelywaiting to see if HealWell broke
10,000 massages in 2024, themoment is here.
Healwell provided 10,504sessions in 2024.

(01:36):
The current tally for 2025 is1,406 sessions in the DC,
maryland, virginia area.
Comta, the Commission onMassage Therapy Accreditation,
has added HealWell to its newresource page.
Alongside the nationalassociations and other leaders,
we appreciate COMTA'srecognition of our efforts and
would like them to know that wethink they're pretty awesome too

(01:56):
and we appreciate all the workthey do.
Healwell would also like tonote that we are not a national
association.
We are a nonprofit who happensto be a little mouthy and really
into collaboration.
Up next, state and nationalnews In 2021, the US government
enacted the CorporateTransparency Act because

(02:18):
corporations are often nottransparent about their actions,
which leads to fraud, embezzlement and other crimes.
The law now includes what iscalled beneficial ownership
information, which requires acompany to state who owns the
company.
If you think it's kind of weirdthat we need a law about that,
you should check out theLaundromat on Netflix, which may
not be a stunning movie butdoes show the hide-and-go-seek

(02:38):
methods of corporate crime.
The beneficial ownershipinformation does apply to LLCs,
so if you are a sole proprietor, you might need to register.
To see if you are required toregister, please use the link in
the show notes.
You will need to register yourcompany by March 21st.
Since last summer, amta hasbeen, and still is, defending
the 150% rule at the federallevel, which allows students to

(03:01):
obtain federal funding forcareer schools even if the
program exceeds the minimum hourrequirements for a state
license in that profession.
Amta's case in defense of therule has made progress in a
Washington DC court, butcurrently a two-month stay has
been issued.
The Interstate Massage Compacthas been introduced in the
following states Maine, illinois, alabama, new York, arkansas,

(03:24):
montana, virginia, connecticut,georgia and Iowa.
Two states, ohio and Nevada, have officially joined the
compact.
Five more states are neededbefore a committee can be formed
to hammer out the rules.
If you live in one of thesestates, or really any state, and
are interested in supportingthe compact in your state,
please visit the ABMP link inthe show notes for more

(03:44):
information.
You can even support thecompact by reaching out to
legislators in neighboringstates.
Legislators everywhere need toknow that massage therapists
care about this, so you don'thave to wait until it's
introduced into your state.
You can stir the pot now.
The Virginia legislatureintroduced a bill that would
increase its massage therapyminimum required education hours
from 500 to 625.

(04:05):
The bill did not pass, but itwill come up again in the next
session.
The Texas Department ofLicensing and Regulation has
stopped confirming CE creditsfor massage therapy license
renewals.
Instead, the department willnow be doing a random audit to
check that massage therapistshave taken the full 12 CEs every
two years.
The Arkansas Senate hasproposed a bill that would
create a state licensing examthat massage therapists have
taken the full 12 CEs every twoyears.
The Arkansas Senate has proposeda bill that would create a

(04:27):
state licensing exam for massagetherapists that would replace
the MBLECs.
While Hewell doesn't know thecontents of the exam, abmp has
pointed out that such an examcould be a burden on the
Arkansas Department of Healthand it might make license
portability a challenge.
Amta has stated that the billdoesn't require the exam to be
psychrometrically validated, which is the process of making

(04:47):
sure the test is reliable.
Validation is a difficult andcontinuous process that can be
costly, but it is an importantpart of what makes an exam
useful and fair.
Also, as you just heard, arkansas is one of the states
that recently introduced theInterstate Compact.
The current wording of thecompact essentially requires
practitioners to pass the MBLECs, although those requirements

(05:07):
are not set in stone.
However, there are also validreasons for Arkansas to create
its own exam.
New York State has its own exambecause the MBLEX doesn't cover
traditional Asian modalities, which are part of foundational
education for the state.
An attempt in Utah to beginderegulating massage has been
halted due to massage therapistfeedback and pressure.
Let me say that again.

(05:29):
A bill to deregulate massagetherapy in Utah has been halted
because massage therapists spokeup.
The bill would have establisheda registered massage
practitioner tier that wouldrequire no education,
examination or safety standards.
The current bill has removedthat language, passed the Senate
and is waiting for thegovernor's signature.
I would like to note that insome provinces in Canada the

(05:50):
term registered massagetherapist is part of a tiered
system, but it is the title withthe most rigorous standards,
not the least, and there is notier that allows a person to
provide massage withouteducation or safety standards.
Minnesota has introduced billsin its House and Senate to
establish licensing for massagetherapy and Asian bodywork
therapies.
The bill is currently in theCommittee for Health and Human

(06:14):
Services.
The bill would define terms formassage therapy and Asian
bodywork therapy, create atemporary permit for working in
the state and override municipallicensing laws.
Municipalities would still beable to enforce business
licensing requirements.
The bill includes a procedurefor grandfathering currently
practicing therapists, andKansas has introduced a Senate

(06:36):
bill to create licensing.
Kansas licensing would be heldunder the Board of Healing Arts,
which includes 16 otherprofessions such as medical
doctors, physical therapists,respiratory therapists and
contact lens distributors.
For real.
The contact lens people beat usto licensing.
There is less informationavailable about the Kansas bill

(06:56):
than there is about Minnesota's,but there will be a
transitional status to preventmassage therapists from having
to stop practicing in order toobtain a license.
If you live in Minnesota orKansas and would like to support
licensing in your state, obtaina license.
If you live in Minnesota orKansas and would like to support
licensing in your state, bothABMP and AMTA have resources to
help you.
Neither of these states haveever had licensing before, so
this is a big deal, and today wehave our first public service

(07:18):
announcement.
Facebook, instagram and Threadshave announced that they have
essentially given up moderatingtheir spaces.
You should default.
Assume that everything on thosesites, including things from
people you know, are incorrectuntil proven otherwise,
particularly things that wantyour information.
Healwell saw an ad this weekclaiming to help massage
therapists reclaim money from2021.

(07:39):
We found nothing about it onSnopes and no trace of the
company listed on the internet.
We checked the reviews on thecompany's Facebook page and all
of them started with the wordscam.
If you can't verify a claimlike this with AMTA or ABMP,
please assume that it is untrue.
Healwell doesn't have enoughstaff to keep up with
information like this, but if anoffer like this was legit, you

(08:00):
can bet that AMTA and ABMP wouldboth be telling their members.
Our next segment is news fromthe Massage Therapy National
Associations.

about pediatric acute burns, astudy about pediatric IBS, the
effect of massage on bloodglucose and cardiovascular
function and an article on uppertrapezius trigger points.
